Watching film on Baker Mayfield from the Tennessee game, the main things that stood out was his decision making and command of the offense. I did not see one bad decision the entire game or a single time that he forced a ball into tight coverage. At times he was even making pre-snap checks on his own without looking at the sideline. He did a nice job not locking on to receivers, going through his reads, even if he missed an open receiver a time or two.
Early on, other than the throw to Westbrook that ended in an interception, Mayfield was money on intermediate throws. The OU signal caller showed strong mechanics in the pocket but when he did leave the pocket, Mayfield showed he can make accurate throws on the run. Love his quick trigger. Once he makes a decision on where he wants to go with the ball, it is gone. There is no wind up/hitch in his release. The ball is high & tight; compact release, doesn’t extend the ball behind his head and you don’t see it drop in his motion, which also helps with a fast trigger.
On quick pop passes he is able to take the snap, set his feet, and fire the rock in a hurry. This can make a big difference in receivers getting more yards after the catch. He looked good setting up in the pocket with a solid base underneath him, not too wide or narrow. Torqued his hips and transferred his weight on his follow through. This, along with his footwork, helped him make accurate throws throughout the game.
One of Mayfield’s more impressive passes came in the 1st quarter on a 3rd & 6 when he delivered a bullet into Durron Neal’s chest that would have resulted (the ball was dropped) in a 20-yard gain. Even though it will ultimately go down as an incompletion, the throw really showed off Mayfield’s arm strength. A couple of his other big throws were on a roll out, one where he hit Shepard on a big 3rd down in the 4th on the sideline and the second on that fade (also to Shepard) to tie the game. Both of which were big time throws.
Where Mayfield did have some issues, however, was on the deep ball. He had Jarvis Baxter down the seam on one play that should have been a TD, but Mayfield just put too much on it where he needed more touch on the throw. Another time he had Westbrook breaking down the sideline but throwing it from the opposite hash, Mayfield again put too much on it and the ball sailed out of bounds.
Granted, the pressure Mayfield faced most of the night certainly caused a number of his throws to be rushed. In watching the film, there were more than a few times where he left the pocket early when he didn’t need to. Presumably, of course, because the pressure he’d been facing hurried the clock in this head. Additionally, there were some instances in which he was trying to throw fastballs on the short-to-intermediate routes which caused an inaccurate throw.
Mayfield was a magician, though, getting out of trouble and fleeing the pocket, refusing to go down, showing great feet, balance & determination. He did a great job keeping his eyes down field and hurt the Volunteers, at times, in this scenario finding open receivers. Through three quarters, he was 8-25 (with a number of drops) for 84 yards and 2 interceptions. However, he finished 11-14 for 103 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 4th quarter and overtime.

excellent!
I think there were a few plays where Mayfield scrambled out of the pocket when there was no pressure. Of course most of the time he was forced out by the lines poor protection.
There was certainly moments that he looked very very mediocre at best but other times he looked great. The deep pass to Mixon that was called back was actually a little behind Mixon but the main thing is the passes to Baxter and Westbrook that he missed at least showed he has the arm to sling it. The whole offense looked rough for the first 3 quarters. But what I am impressed with the most was his poise all the way through.
The problem I see is that Baker has so much grit the Marines wouldn’t even take him. Spreading his degree of moxie has got to have a steep learning curve for any team. Take note, Lincoln.
Maybe if they played some of the taller receivers, he’d have some bigger targets to throw to on the deep balls
Right, we are recruiting all of these monsters yet the tallest starting receiver is 6 foot 1 maybe.
I just posted a similar comment prior to reading yours. Don’t get it.
With quick route running, smaller quicker WR’s will create more separation that a tall slower one. We had 2 Juco guys starting their 2nd game in the big leagues, they will grow from this and be very good.
They can’t create better separation on fade routes to corner of end zone. That’s what my comment referenced. I like Westbrook and Baxter. But we have Andrews, Mead, Green, Todd, and Miller that could be utilized. I’m just giving my opinion.
Wasn’t Miller the receiver at back of end zone on deep ball that got the PI called?
Yes. So clearly the coaches have some trust in him to put him in for such a huge play. Would just lIke to see more of them.
Brad, I was mainly talking about short passes since our offense is based on that strategy. I agree on using the bigger guys because they could’ve used their bodies on the shorter routes. This is a chain mover but Simmons/Gundy forgot more than I will ever know.
Got ya. That makes perfect sense.
When you have a juco, Baxter, that has been on campus for just over a month come in and start…it’s not a great sign. Not to denigrate Baxter’s talent, but he possess the needed suddenness and is willing to block, two things the others seem to not be doing so well.
Maybe the coaches know more about their team than you do???
Was surprised Mead didn’t see the field especially after all the Durron Neal drops.
Nice piece. I would say his intangibles make him special. How long have we, as Sooners, waited for a leader like this taking snaps. Not to say we have not had great quarterback play but “I will never quit” was music to my ears. BOOMER!!
Mayfield leads the nation in intangibles.
On the Mixon zone read, I was like hand the damn ball off to Perine he is wide open. But Mixon will get better at it
If I remember right, two of those zone reads it looked like Perine could’ve jogged in around the edge.
That was my take too. Hand the ball off Joe! 🙂
Bob said yesterday he was a “little” selfish and will get better with those reads. I think Perine would have scored the second time they ran it if Joe hands it off. But hey, he is a freshman, he will learn.
It’s not a zone read, like the other play, where they read the DE and the RB goes inside. The QB goes outside, if the DE crashes inside.
The play with Mixon is the opposite, the RB (Perine) goes on a sweep if he gets the handoff, whereas the QB (Mixon) runs straight ahead). They may still reading the DE, but the play is different.
When you’re up to your ass in alligators, it is sometimes hard to remember your primary objective is to drain the swamp. I was very, very proud of Mayfield and the entire rest of the team. Tough environment.
Mayfield’s receivers did him no favors last Saturday …..hopefully the route running , separation ability, and catching the football will improve….Mayfield would have been close to 66% completion ration rather than closer to 50% with some help…..
He finished at 19 of 29, no? That’s 66%
no, 19 of 39 = 48.5%
Ah, sorry. My bad on the read.
No worries. I made a comment about this yesterday. Some folks say if we don’t have 62% or better, we lose. This shows Riley wants winners who will work and stay within the system. By doing this, good things will happen.
no…………he finished 19 of 39…………………….
Baxter and Westbrook need to make plays. If not try Andrews, Mead and Miller.
Neither did Jerry Rice his rookie year but he did ok.
One thing I saw was when he got in trouble, he almost always went right. Other teams will/have picked up on this and it will be more difficult in the future. Short passes need to be at the numbers or below but with 100k and adrenaline on high, this happens. That’s why I said he grew up a lot. I was looking for a back shoulder throw on those go/fade routes. I thought that would open up the deep threat.
What people don’t realize is he’s never played in front of anything remotely close to that and he hasn’t played in almost 2 years. Hats off. Winners win.
He might have been going right for a reason – left side protection breaking down. Just a hunch.
It’s also easier to make that throw as a righty.
And, you too Sir are correct. 🙂
You are correct Sir.
Orlando didn’t do him many favors. That’s too be expected with a true frosh and fully expect that kid to improve.
It was kind of a strange game to watch. The next day, when I checked the box score, I was stunned by the fact that we won the game statisically. It felt like we barely stole a victory when watching in real time.
We were losing the game in every way up until the 4th quarter. It was amazing that the defense was able to clamp down so much in the second half.
absolutely. We were losing it right up until we weren’t. Once we tied it, everybody in my house was utterly sure we’d win. Once we tied it…..
Eric, that is a very good point. I think it’s the depth. And, we have depth that we haven’t used. Austin Roberts and potentially Lampkin.
The D played pretty well all even in the 1st half. The problem in the 1st half was field possession: Tenn started their possessions at mid-field.
A short punt in the 1st half hurt badly, so did a pick on our 1st possession.
After the first two plays of the 2nd half, the D played lights out.
Offense took a long time to get untracked.
It’s going to be awesome to see Mayfield and this offense once all cylinders are firing! This, combined with the continued improvement of our defense, will prove to be suffocating to our competition as the season progresses. Boom!
We need more than one receiver to step up in big games too. Shep is all world, but we need others to show up and start helping at critical moments.
I KNOW it’s only been 2 games but wish somebody with definitive information can tell us why Mead, Todd and those guys can’t even get a chance. They are so tall. Just seems IMO they would make easy targets. I HATE the fade. It worked the other night but with Shep being shorter, that pass must be 100% perfect. Mead can just out jump the db. Just don’t get it.
The ESPiN announcers commented that we stayed with a small receiver lineup. I was thinking our coaches probably wanted speed over height matchups most of the night. All I could come up with.
I think it’s probably more about leaning on the guys you feel you can trust in a hostile environment. Not the time to be experimenting. They did get a huge PI call throwing to Dahu Green towards the end though.
Green and Miller got some snaps in the 4th Q, but not Mead and Todd. You have to block, get separation, and catch the ball.
I understand football. They never even play so how in the hell does anybody know? Maybe they’ll get some opportunities on Saturday and build from it.
LR has made it very clear if you don’t block, you don’t play. That may be the issue. On the other hand, if receivers aren’t open and can’t catch, blocking doesn’t matter.
We were hearing some good things out of practices but the receivers, other than Westbrook and Baxter, do not seem to have progressed, SO FAR, the way we were hoping under Simmons. Still looking for 3-4 guys to step up and help this team at the receiver position. We knew the OL was going to be a problem w/ Ty the only FT returner. Once they settle in, the run game takes off and Baker has more time for that deep ball.
His release is what I am most impressed most with. I still think the interception was on Westbrook. He needs to catch those balls. Same as Neal and Baxter. Overall I still can’t believe that we already have the QB question answered. It’s incredible how much a coach changes things
And having a coherent offensive system too. Life is good.
Yeah, I like Westbrook, but I think he got alligator arms on that play.
I don’t think he realized it was coming a mach speed. He didn’t get all of fall camp so he’s growing. This will help and make him understand that this isn’t Blinn. His upside is great.
Yeah I think he will contribute plenty. And as far as mach speed goes, Baker was throwing some heat. That’ll happen in a big environment.
Even pros drop passes… just ask Sammy B what happened last night.
Baker Mayfield has reached #TheBrodie status
There will only ever be one Brodie. The originator himself, Russell Westbrook.
True. I see some similar moxie in the young gun though
Missing an open receiver or two is a bit of an understatement… just watch the very 1st play. I really like the kids game but right now he is not helping the oline as much as he could by missing too many reads and leaving the pocket too early too often. Don’t get me wrong he is by far the best qb on the roster and I think his very few issues will be worked out by the time the hillbillies come to town. Plus my man has some giant brass…
This game will help him control his adrenaline for future big games. He controls this and his passes will be more accurate. I’m looking forward to the game slowing down for him.
You can’t be serious?
Baker was running for his life most of the game. Actually you have it backwards as the OL has to help out the QB and the skill players big time.
I can absolutely be serious since I know what I’m talking about. Watch the very 1st play. It was drawn up beautifully and Baker missed the receiver running wide open. The oline absolutely has issues but with 3 new starters and it looking like Darlington is going to miss time that isn’t going to change any time soon. So the QB and coaches have to know that and adjust accordingly.
Sorry, I have to disagree. Mayfield has been better than he appeared due to the sheer number of dropped passes. He can improve his deep throws and I believe he will. He has shown it in the past.
The drops are killing him and the team for sure. I was ready to leave Durron in Tennessee at one point. Its very difficult to see the other issues baker is having. You really need to see the all 22 to see the designs of the play and the reads he is missing. I’m not trying to bag on the kid at all and his issues are going to get fixed sooner than the oline issues but none of it matters of receivers can’t hold on to the ball.
I think I agree with you more than I thought I would when I first read your post, but now that I have read it a couple of times I think I am pretty close to agreement with you. BM has talent and he has a lightning quick release but I have always said he fails to see the entire field at times…not always…and his accuracy isn’t completely consistent yet. I will however say that thus far his attitude is infectious. I had some doubts like many but when I watch him play, I can tell he loves football and just wants to win. With a bigger sample size and some more games, We will see what he is truly made of.
He is young and doesn’t have a ton of experience so he will improve on his reads and things will slow down for him. You are 100% right that his attitude, his leadership, his moxie are things that can’t be coached and will serve him and this team very well as they did Saturday night. Everyone can agree we haven’t seen a Sooner team fight like that in awhile and I don’t think it’s a coincidence that they have a fighter as qb.
Just went back and watched the 1st play again. Westbrook is Mayfields 3rd read. Perine is covered and then he moves to Neal. Liked what he saw and took it. Better throw would have equaled a completion. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him move through progressions quicker next time that play is called to see if Westbrook is running free again.
To make things easier and to help oline I think that Westbrook and Mixon need to be read 1 and option 1 on that play. Make the lb make a decision and what ever he decides he is wrong. If he hustles to cover the wheel hit the drag and next time when he sits on the drag too long hit the wheel. Then you can come back and I’m betting they over play the backside and you’ll have someone on the flood pop open.
I like TK but Baker definitely moves through his progressions better than TK. That being said, we have to remember that Baker has less than a dozen games under his belt and that will develope even more once he gets more game experience. Oh, and an OLine that gives him even half a second more protection won’t hurt either.
He does struggle with accuracy at times like stated above, he tries to display his rocket arm on some throws when it is not needed. Has to learn to take some off at times. His deep ball is what needs the most improvement going into Tulsa from what I saw.
Hope to see them keep trying the deep ball because he is going to start connecting I’m sure. 4 verts is bread and butter in this offense and they hand the wrs to take the top off the defense… just a matter of time before it gets clicking.
I agree. He will connect at some point. He did attempt to hit the TE up the seam Sat. It was actually Connor Knight however, Mayfield looked to have some trouble getting the ball down but over Kasitati’s back on the play and the ball came out high and was about 3-4 feet over Knight’s head. Was the only time I saw an issue with Mayfield’s height in the pocket on the day.
Appreciate all your insight Alex. As on offensive lineman I didn’t know or care what you skill position guys were doing until I became a coach.
Definitely appreciate you reading and your insight. Haha understand.
He is still better than what he showed against teams with talent when he was at Taco Tech. That was my concern heading into the season.
Know exactly what play you are talking about, Westbrook running the backside drag route across the middle. If he hits him it looks to be a big play. However, I didn’t see numerous times this happened. Plus it would have required Mayfield to throw back across the grain just a bit. And if he doesn’t square his hips the ball could sail. If I remember correctly, Tennessee had a safety over the top. So can see the good and the bad.
To me the issue on that play was him not seeing it right away. As soon as the lb heads towards Mixon on the wheel he needs to throw that drag. And you’re right there aren’t numerous in the Tennessee game, I overstated. I guess I am talking about what I’ve seen from him so far as a whole… spring game, Akron, Tennessee and video from tech. I think his clock is a little fast and he is rushing his reads but he and the offense is very close and once it gets going, look out!
I noticed that play as well. The Safety was over the top, but towards the sideline. A pass to Westbrook & small cut left & he had nothing but green.
There’s a play at 11:00 in the 2nd quarter. Alvarez pulls and Brown (slightly) blocks the backside DE. Alvarez doesn’t blow up the LB. Because of that, when Perine follows Alvarez he has to wait. St. John locks up Maggitt pretty well. Nila stones his man. Brown barely blocks the backside DE (#9), who ends up making the tackle.
Perine gained some yards, but it seems that he could have gained quite a few more yards.
roybell, Josh is a respected coach who knows what he’s talking about so take that for what it’s worth.
Appreciate it Boom… although my predictions for the Tennessee game might challenge the idea that I know what I’m talking about lol.
So was mine but I’ll take a win. Early on, Baker left the pocket so early his WR’s couldn’t been more than 10 yards downfield. At times the OL broke down but there were plenty of times he had another second to 1.5 seconds. Reads can change dramatically in that time.
Roy, it’s cool to disagree but adding the “you can’t be serious?” is what we try to avoid here. It’s dismissive.
I know it’s not a popular opinion but I agree with you Josh. Baker may be very accurate on the deep ball but so far he hasn’t proven it. Hopefully he will soon. I’m sure the lack of faith in his OL is part of it but it’s all we have to go on right now.
I hope they work on the deep ball and get the timing down. Critical missing piece of the offensive play puzzle.
What I’m confused about is why the bigger bodied receivers weren’t used more Saturday. Between the oline and bakers quick clock having those big bodied guys inside running quick slants and curls and just boxing out the defenders, with bakers quick release that is tough to stop. Then you’ll get the safeties to hopefully walk down or fall asleep a little and hit them deep when baker is in a rhythm and hopefully feeling it.
Andrews on a Y-sail?
Andrews will be on a pasture route until he learns how to block.
His blocking is very suspect. Got to be able to block on the wr screens but I’d rather them get him in there to take advantage of the mismatches he creates and throw screens the other way lol.
I was hoping they would move him in close, play action from Perine and then hit the seam. Their LBs were attacking and they would’ve missed that play.
He doesn’t see himself as a TE and never wanted to play there. No surprise he’s not the best blocker.
Love the y sail option route and Andrews could run it lined up flexed out or as the TE. With Tennessee having such tight coverage and the wrs having trouble early making competitive catches I would have liked to see the bigger bodies in there more.
I think it might be more a lack of faith in TT O line, I know we are playing some young guys, but they are not bad and will continue to improve. As will Baker. It’s hard to block for a guy that leaves the pocket even when the blocks are good. Possibly a vision issue? He does a remarkable job of staying on his feet out there though.
WRs not getting separation.
I’m hoping (praying) that’s not the case. I only watch on TV, so I can’t tell.
Define separation. seemed like a lot of them were separated but dropped the ball.
Any QB is gonna miss a few throws. Overall he’s pretty accurate. Too many good passes being dropped. Has to have time to go deep too. There’s so many plays where 1-2 linemen completely wiff on their man and get a free run at him. It’s easy for us to say stay in the pocket but on a couple of those plays being talked about, if he does stay in the pocket and nobody comes open downfield, he’s now SURROUNDED on all sides and being taken down for a 100% FOR SURE sack. A different story if we have a line thats anywhere close to last yrs. I’m sure in hindsight, there’s a couple times where he sees he could’ve stayed in there and it would’ve worked out, but it’s hard to do that in the moment when the average time in there is about 2.5 seconds. I don’t feel like he’s just automatically leaving it everytime no matter what….but it’s gotta be hard for him to trust the protection too because there’s penetration in his step-up area up the middle too. Inconsistent pocket and he has no idea who’s gonna miss their block next.
I hope I’m wrong with this thought but another concern is tipped passes and obscured vision. I’ve read where Baker is 6’1″ but I have my doubts. I recall at least one or two tipped passes and his height, or lack thereof, may also have contributed to his missing open receivers. I think this is something to watch for going forward.
He definitely can toss a heater. Some of those really got in on the receivers. They need to get ready for a ball in the grill and not be so late to get their hands up.
Baker is an absolute gamer at the QB position. Kind of reminds me of a poor man’s Johnny Manziel because he makes plays that it looks like he should not, and he has the swagger. Only criticism I have of him is that he does occasionally leave the pocket when he could step up into the pocket. Other than that, I think he is an excellent QB for this system and if the offense can get the O-line figured out (big if) and their rythm earlier, we could be a great offense.
He still only has 9 starts (I believe) under his belt and only 2 after a 1.5 yrs off from game time experience. Neylend was quite the stage to come out and show so much poise. I had a feeling he could do it but that was damn impressive. There’s only one way for his heart rate to go after that game… and that’s down. I expect he will learn not to bail on the pocket too early in due time.
I keep reading where folks are critical of Baker leaving the pocket too early vs. steeping up into it- I think part of that is just his size, he isn’t a tall cat and I think he just rolls to wherever his comfort level leads him.
My only problem with Sat is…..good sound fundamental assignment football trumps exciting comebacks any day. However, that sure was fun Sat night 🙂
It was NOT fun for about 3 hours. The last 30 minutes were amazing.
The 3 hours made the last 30 minutes amazing.
You are right . But what was good was watching the D clamp down each qrt more and more. You knew something was going to give, but would there be time. Amazing is right.
Agreed, somewhat lost in the mix is OU’s clock management in that game- outstanding!
Hope we get the OL straight this week. We may be without Ty, Nila is banged up, and Alvarez is out sick. Heard that Farniok was taking reps at left guard. A 6’8 guard and tackle combo is pretty crazy.
Just gotta get to the bye week.
That’s what they’re hoping with Ty, if B can get Wren up to speed and ready, Ty could have a full 2 weeks to rest.
Surprised Wren is over Dalton at backup Center.
Well, Alvarez is usually the back up for Ty, but hes been pretty sick. If he’s good to go he may slide over to snap and Danley should get in at LG. Dalton may need to step in for Nila if he’s too banged up to go. Alot of shuffling in the interior.
For sure. Alvarez needs all the reps he can get. Not good for him. We’ll see how communication is if Ty can’t go. There have been plenty of missed assignments even with him in there.
What is Alvarez sick with?
Just a bug that’s going around the team. Alot of players have been under the weather recently.
Even though the official roster has Dalton as a center, he’s been playing RG since spring practice started. He would play RG if Nila is out.
Yeah I guess I didn’t realize he had completely stopped working at Center. You would hope Danley could be pretty good, but he didn’t look great in the one video from camp I saw where Lampkin dominated him on his first day.
It came out after that video went online, that the play was supposed to be run half speed, walk-thru like, and Danley was doing that, but Lampkin (1st day) was not.
That’s good to know! Hadn’t heard that.
Even vs Tulsa that is a lot of shuffling… I won’t lie I worry (see Arkansas)..
Yeah you know its bad when Brown and Samia will be two of your most experienced OLinemen.
Tulsa is no slouch, regardless of their first two opponents. This game certainly has the potential to keep us on the edge of our collective seat.
get past tu, do what can be done with the break and then it’s no break til end……..would think they’re giving some of the fr a crash course just in case to get thru the season………this is going to be a real adventure
I thought he was a little too excited, threw it a little too hard in the first half.M y hope was he would calm down………It took a while, but damn that kid is going to be good!
P.S. God bless the defense!!!!
And the punter. And Shep.
As one of the folks that asked for this. THANK YOU TFB!! The best as always. You guys get my first look online daily. Cheers for that.
A couple additional questions.
1. Do you think Baker has improved from TT/Spring?
2. Is BM an above average QB?
3. Is BM as good or better than Shane Carden?
I think we need more sampling of play in games to make a determination one way or another. By mid-season we should know how good/consistent he is and his potential for the future.
Agreed.
When the OLine gets up to snuff ( hopefully that will happen ) we’ll know just how good Baker is. So far though I like more than I dislike what Im seeing in him.
He’s the starting QB for the greatest CFB program of all time… I’d say that in itself is an improvement.
In Baker’s experience level, he never really had a good win against a quality opponent on the road as a freshman. The fact that our young O line is a little suspect (but improving), and the necessity of Baker to constantly be on the move and throwing on the run, yes I think he is better. A 2 game sampling of QB is not enough for me to make an opinion on above average or not, and finally I could care less about Shane Carden (not trying to be a smart a**, just trying to keep it real.
I don’t care about Carden either, but he was pretty successful in this offense, and was the last QB to play in Riley’s system, so I think it’s a valid comparison. Also, I wasn’t asking you. 🙂
Sorry, I wasn’t aware there were private posts on this board. I won’t let it happen again. I just didn’t realize I was in the presence of someone so special. Have a very wonderful and Blessed day, and may you get everything in life that you deserve so richly!
Take it easy there tiger. I was saying that with tongue in cheek.
Respect gets you lots of friends here, opinions are welcome (even in disagreement). Arrogance and catty remarks doesn’t cut it, that is what makes this site special in most of our eyes far and above any other Sooner site on the web. I respect your opinions, you ask valid questions, you make intellegent remarks, these qualities in you make this site special, the other “tongue in cheek”, not so much.
#SoonerNation… We need to go full force on Tyrie Cleveland, Devin Duvernay, Devah Whaley, Sean McGrew, Moe Neal, Johncarlo Valentin, Tramonda Moore and Ashton Julius.. (Garett Bolles) too. I will get to Defense later.
“Kept his head together and made plays at the right time.” Thanks K
Just wanted to say how much I love this site and the contributors and posters that love Oklahoma football as much as I do. my father was a Coach for over 30 years and he and I used to always watch the games together and then vent or argue or whatever the situation was after the games for the next few hours or weeks or whatever. haven’t been able to do that with anyone since he passed many years ago and I love being able to come here and talk about Sooner football even when we don’t agree on things. Boomer Sooner!
I always miss my dad a little bit more during football season. We talked on the phone after every game. When we weren’t always ‘getting along’, we always had OUr passion for OU, especially football, to bring us together. BOOMER!!!

Thanks man! Thanks for reading! I really enjoy reading y’alls comments and insights!
I hate to keep going back to the OL. But we haven’t established an offensive identity yet. I know it’s supposed to be the Air Raid but because of our problems up front it’s not looking anything like it. Plus I think our backs (mainly) Samaje is being underutilized. Again it’s because of the protection. I haven’t seen our guys move people off the ball either (run block). Blocking to a stalemate will not yield favorable results.
I agree. The offense starts and ends with the line and they haven’t been up to snuff yet. I think because of this they have used Perine to block a lot more than expected and when he does run there isn’t anywhere for him to go.
Yes. Last year we had those big bodies that could just man up and create lanes. This year we’re having to create angle blocks and more zone schemes, that type of blocking fits more Mixons style. But we can’t run anything if there’s too much penetration up front.
We haven’t even had a chance to establish an identity. When it’s 2nd and 10 or 15, it’s even harder to run it with the line issues we have. We can run a bit up the middle, but we’re having the most trouble blocking on the edge. Even when we get 4-7 yards on 1st down, we false start on 2nd down or get a holding penalty. Almost EVERY set of downs too. it’s KILLING us.
There’s not an offense in the county that can consiistantly overcome their average down and distance on 2nd and 3rd down that they’re putting THEMSELVES into, set of downs atfter set of downs as they’re trying to work their way down the field without eventually having to punt. We’re in obvious passing situations to the D and then they can tee off on us and cover deeper. We can’t run a draw either because the blocking isn’t good enough. Lose lose situation. Didn’t even mention the drops.
It starts with the penalties though….if they fix that, Riley can start mixing things up a LOT more, and maybe we can establish an identity. Right now our identity is “fighters that shoot themselves in the foot on a consistant basis”.
The only “identity” on offense needs is to move the chains and score points.
Anyone watch the Eagles game last night? They were running some really nice running plays. Pistol stretch, and a sweep-ish play with a pulling guard and center! Hope LR was watching.
That center is legit, refs were calling some tight holding calls, but man that guy can move.
I dont get Demarco only 9 carries????????
I know, that sweep looked like money a couple of times.
Yeah, they were behind early and Bradford is deadly. But he definitely needs more touches. I think they want to keep him healthy. Can’t sustain as many touches as he got last year. They have 3 good backs with Sproles and Matthews in the fold too.
Okay… I haven’t watched replay…but I was wondering why Mixon was running up the middle, and Perine wide?
A few too many times? ? ?
You need to key up the press conference from yesterday on SoonerSports.tv Stoops addressed the situation with the wildcat, he was a little peeved with Mixon, he called it “selfish”. Please go listen to him explain it in real time. It is a HB read play, he controls the option and didn’t read it well or didn’t want to give up the ball.
I meant the called plays…
I didn’t explain myself very well, the called play according to Stoops is always a read by Mixon. It’s always an option, depending on the defensive allignment. Stoops says he handles the ball well, can throw, makes good decisions in practice. He was not happy with his in game decisions. I think his talent handling the ball is why he is the wildcat and Perine is the RB. It doesn’t make a lot of sense as you say to run Mixon inside and Perine outside, but its basically up to Mixon how it happens when the D is read.
It being only his 2nd collegiate game, I think Mixon will learn to get better in that respect. He’s so fired up, been waiting to play for over a year and you can tell he badly wants to make a positive difference. I think it’ll come.

Dang it.. I really liked that guy 🙂
It’ll be interesting to see how quickly the new AD turns the football program around….or at least tries to.
Texsa’ns hatin Texsa’ns
Now, onward and upward for the Big 12. With time and stability at UT with a smarter AD coming in (who & when?) it will benefit the conference. For the big 12 to live they have to work together and based on Boren’s comments earlier in the year, it wasn’t.
Hope the next move is a good one and the next conference move is even better.
I think Boren’s comments were a shot across Patterson’s bow. I get the impression that we always worked well with Dodds but nobody liked Patterson. Boren was basically telling the UT brass get us someone we can work with or be prepared for SWC 2.0.
Interesting take. Could be.
Boren was playing the political card. Also, UT knows they can’t lose both ATM & OU. Now that the conference is stronger with the rise of Baylor/TCU/KSU/OSU this will help the Big 12 attract other schools IMO. If we can get Texas to move the Longhorn network to the Big 12 network and get a big ESPN contract to help support us, I would be happy.
happier……..
Hasn’t the last two weeks covinced us all that BYU is divinely inspired and needs to be part of the BIg 12?
Not interested in BYU. If Big 12 added BYU I would hope we left for the SEC.
I was a season ticket holder at BYU for about a decade and I concur. Ever wonder how they manage to beat teams like Texas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma? They schedule these teams early — like the first or second game of the season, before their lines have time to jell. Then they dominate the line play because many of their linemen are 2-3 years older than other teams because they’ve served LDS missions. Later in the season it’s a different story.
RIP Patterson. You were my 2nd favorite AD.

I just saw that D. Williams suffered a sprained MCL Sunday. Hope he recovers soon.
Thought this was a good interview…

Love Dan Patrick. This was really good. Thanks for sharing. Baker making the rounds today. They haven’t always let these guys do mid-week interviews, but I think it’s good for them. They only get this once in a lifetime. Let them live it up.
Love the question from Dan: “you are not lacking confidence are you Baker?” Baker: “No, not at all” LOVE IT!
Committed recruits and those yet to opt in have got to love the thought of being a part of a team that gets this kind of national exposure.
Lol awesome interview!! Baker seems legit,on and off the field.

Watching Sam last night made me realize just how far we’ve fallen in the QB department. Not knocking Mayfield, it’s just Sam was really special.
I was thinking the same thing. Not knocking any of the QB’s since, but, Landry and what he accomplished at OU makes the QB play at OU look pretty bad since he departed.
He’s good enough to lead the team to wins if the O line continues to improve. He’s a playmaker.
I agree, he probably just needs some good coaching, a little time and some more reps. Sam just spoiled us. Landry was a notch below, but a pretty good QB who owns the OU passing record books. TK and Baker are good, not yet great QB’s. Baker can probably improve week by week. Taking on that Tennessee front was impressive to me even with his mistakes. The other thing was the way he popped up and ran back to start the next play. He’s got some talents that are not necessarily QB related that gives him a little special “sumpin”.
His 1st 3 quarter stats look horrible, but he was playing better than that. both INTs may be the fault of the WR
I agree. The media kept talking about Knight and even some Sooner fans on Twitter were wondering about Knight coming in. I never felt like Mayfield was the problem. I agree with Alex that he left the pocket a bit early on a few plays but you can’t really blame him with the protection breakdowns that were happening.
He was leaving the pocket because he is 5’10. It’s hard to see over 6’5….just sayin.
According to the roster he is 6’1″
Think they are off a bit.
See above post on same.
One thing I can say is that no matter how bad things seemed through 3 quarters, I never wanted a change in QB. I even texted that to my brother during the game. I felt that if we could get out of our own way, Baker would come through. I admit to thinking that OU wasn’t going to pull it off and the game was likely over, but I couldn’t stop watching. That turned out to be quite a memorable game, and I was so proud of them all, especially Mayfield, for never losing his cool and stepping up in crunch time on an enormous stage. I really think we’ve got a special QB and I don’t care if he isn’t always perfect on technique or runs out of the pocket too early sometimes. If he gets results and leads the team to victory, well …I can’t ask for much more.
The defense came through big time in that game. I applaud the defensive game plan, and coach Mike & company deserve some big props for that.
Mayfield on the Dan Patrick show… his girlfriend is a poke… he’s dead to me lol.

I originally had this posted below as a reply to another post but think it’s worth posting on its own with an included link for you to browse and reply to if you want- here ya go:
“I keep reading where folks are critical of Baker leaving the pocket too early vs. stepping up into it- I think part of that is just his size, he isn’t a tall cat and I think he just rolls to wherever his comfort level leads him.”

Definitely some truth that BM has trouble seeing the field because of his height. Brees figures it out somehow.
I think the main concern with him leaving the pocket early is that the play design goes out the window at that point, and he basically eliminates half of the WR’s from the play. Even throwing the check-down is better than scrambling usually.
We’ve had a number of holding calls that probably don’t happen if he stays in the pocket.
He ONLY scrambles right – that will be noted (by KSU for sure) and cause problems. Stepping up in the pocket with end pressure would help him. He has very good feet and vision. Hopefully, experience and looking at his film will make him see his tendency and take advantage of other options.
Best escape artistry since Houdini. I think (hope) the accuracy on the long ball will come, as the O line improves and he takes a split second more to make the throw.

You gotta love Baker’s attitude! There is a thin line between cocky and supremely confident and he tip-toes that line beautifully. The great ones (I am not proclaiming him as that rather making a statement) have this feel to them as if they just know they are going to win. Forget the score, circumstance, etc. if you get the ball in their hands they will flat out get the job done. I was so impressed by his performance Saturday night and believe it is going to propel this team to the next level. For this team I believe this type of win does so much more for the psyche opposed to them going into RT and rolling by 30. They were down, NOTHING was going their way, 100K Vol fans were foaming at the mouth and Baker and Co. just kept plugging away. I said it earlier this week and will say it again. I honestly cannot remember a more satisfying win in recent memory. This kid has the juice and if everyone continues to buy in, do their job and improve from week to week we may have a special year ahead of us. Wonderful write-up as always Alex and props for already being in mid-season form to all the TFB staff. Boomer frikkin Sooner!!!
