– Team News | Baker Mayfield: You may recall on Tuesday morning we noted that Baker Mayfield expects to be ready to go for fall camp. And if you’re a loyal TFB reader, you already knew Mayfield had not participated in 7-on-7 practices or worked out with the team for about 3-4 weeks.
Well, the good news is, for the first time since around the end of June, Mayfield did participate in 7-on-7 this past Wednesday. Which was the team’s final 7-on-7 session as they will begin camp in a little less than two weeks.
I am told Mayfield didn’t necessarily throw extensively, but he was back out there giving it his all working to get re-acclimated. I was also told, however, that Mayfield was a little erratic with some of his throws and that accuracy was an issue. But after about a month of not throwing the ball, that type of stuff is certainly to be expected.
Regardless it’s obvious he is working to try and get himself back in the groove, so that he can be full-go once fall camp arrives. – (Super K)
– Caleb Kelly: Spoke to a source recently regarding 2016 star LB, Caleb Kelly (Fresno, CA). I was very simply told the following, “Caleb is going to likely end up wherever Chip Viney goes.”
Now we all know at some point Viney’s GA term with OU is going to come to an end. But what we don’t know at this time is when exactly that will be. I believe it will be this December, which is obviously prior to National Signing Day. So it will certainly be interesting to monitor whether Bob Stoops plans to find a more permanent role for Viney on the OU staff, or if his (what many believe to be a bright) coaching future may in fact lead him on to another program. – (Super K)
– Obi Eboh & Robert Barnes: 2016 CB Obi Eboh and 2017 safety Robert Barnes were both expected in Norman this weekend. I spoke to Robert’s father, Reggie, last night and he let me know they are rescheduling the trip.
It could happen Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, or even next weekend. It’s still a bit up in the air at the moment, but they do still expect to make the visit.
Reggie’s daughter is currently a student athlete at OU and, of course, Reggie is a former OU football player, so they frequent Norman a lot. And I’d be surprised if Obi and Robert didn’t make it to Norman before the summer is out. – (Super K)
– Christian Tutt: Last weekend the Sooners had a surprise visitor when 2018 all everything defensive back Christian Tutt (Thomson, GA) stopped by Norman. I caught up with him following the trip, which Tutt said he enjoyed is planning to definitely be back for a game in order to ‘check out the game day environment.’
Tutt also said he is excited about all the facility upgrades OU will be going through, and that he could see himself playing under defensive back coach, Kerry Cooks. Even though Tutt is still early in his recruiting process, OU joined programs like USC, Alabama, Georgia, FSU and Auburn (to name a few) in those that have offered.
It’s clear coach Cooks is trying to get a head start on the next two recruiting classes to lay the foundation for the future. The fact that Tutt is already making plans to return to Norman is a big deal for future classes. – (Brandon)
– UPDATE (Fri., 11:54 am): Looks like Devwah Whaley has made it to campus.
Like @CoachJ_Boulware says "Momma there goes that man" is in Norman today! The Next Great One! #GameChanger #OUDNA

I loved this play, freaking hurdling stiff arm!!
Like Superman Roy, this clip never gets old.
Finney, is this what you are doing over the summer??!!
Working for pops and counting down the days until football
Love it!! Glad you get to work early enough to get firstie’s – well done.
We’re here around 8 every morning. Firstie’s is a rare occasion for me, but it happens sometimes
Madden Game type of move….!
God I hope we find a spot for Viney on this staff.
Not sure why Stoops will let him go with the job he did while he was finding a DB replacement.
me too. possibly slide someone else to ILB’s and slide Kish out the door to make room for Chip? please tell me this is a very likely scenario.
Seriously… ??
wonder if Viney can coach LB’s ???
I imagine you’ll keep us updated on Whaley’s visit in the open post as well..?
G-Day minus 43
1 All-American and a couple of other greats

Weldon was a great Sooner, had an excellent NFL career and is a solid citizen.

AA Rod Shoate. This guy was a beast!
Rod Shoate
https://youtu.be/tRTCefNdcUo
Just posted this vid on the other thread. LOL!
Great minds. lol
Great minds. lol
We need a Shoate and a Bosworth.
Shoate was the guy who got me watching LB’ers when I was young. I wanted to be him and tried to do it on the field in HS. He was truly a position changer. LB’ers used to be big run stuffing slow guys. He was super fast and big for that time and he was a game changer. Sooner legend.
Three time AA, how many Sooners have done that, especially at that position?
Shoate was the “new breed” LB and that is what I mean by position changer. Schools started looking for fast backers and got away from the slow stuffers. Shoate is at the top of that pyramid and I would love to see a kid today be a 3 time AA.
Have to say it here too – Rod Shoate BEST OU LB EVER.
Bosworth won the Butkus twice…close call here.
no, Shoate is best. Boz was great but he was no 3 time AA. Shoate changed the blueprint for the position.
Boz would have been a 3 time AA and a 3 time Butkus had he been more mature.
Come on Chip. Stay with the Boom Crew!
Super K.. I love the updates and all you do. But why set up a coach to look bad ? People on here already blaming Kish if Viney (btw is a DB coach correct who struggled horrible ly ) who happens to be from the same city as said LB hence Viney “helping” to recruit C Kelly. Take it for what it’s worth if OU gets Kelly great, if not it won’t be because Kish as Kelly mentioned multiple times he likes Kish.
How is this setting up anyone to look bad? If this is the reality of the situation, then this is the reality of the situation.
If you don’t want to “look bad” then do something to convince a kid that OU is the best place for his future, with or without your friend/mentor.
Isn’t that, in large part, what you’re being paid to do?
You are correct. It is the situation. So by saying he is not coming to OU without Viney being here then, and If we know Viney is will not be here after Dec. then maybe we should quit recruiting him because it won’t matter he will follow Viney anyway. Then we can Kish bash ? Partly, also to coach LBs and last I seen we have some pretty good LBs this year. How were those DBs last year ??
Not sure where to start.
First, as was clearly stated in the post, we don’t know Viney will be gone following December. I’m not sure at this point he’d even know that, though I suppose it certainly is possible (that he’d know).
So that, primarily, would be why they shouldn’t just quit recruiting Kelly.
Second, the idea that you seem to be trying to blame OU’s poor DB play from last season on a graduate assistant is, no offense, laughable.
do you like Kish or not ? If not why ?
I don’t know the man, so I don’t have a personal feeling towards him one way or the other.
All I really care about, as a fan, when it comes to OU coaches is results. Be they on the field or off it (i.e. recruiting).
Regardless, I’m not sure how me “liking” him or not would affect literally anything. Nor is it related to a single point I made my response to you above.
Has he done it on the field or thru recruiting in your opinion ?
IMO, he has not.
In your opinion what does he need to do ?
I’ve always felt Kish puts a good package on the field for the athletes we land in his position. If he can snag a game changing LB then I would have a much higher opinion of him. I understand he may not be the most active recruiter so if he needs help recruiting his position so be it. I just don’t want to see poor LB play
Be better at his job or be gone.
So, say have a All American or two. Have the leading Sack or tackler on the team. Be a top pass deflections on the team. Take a DE and make him a 3rd NFL draft pick. Get two top LBs in a recruiting class ?? Stuff like that ?
Be a coach on a defense that performs will enough to help propel OU along with the offense to a playoff birth.
Kish.
I don’t think he means to make kish look bad but simple stating what he’s told. I’m not saying kish needs to go at all but viney needs to be put on the staff full time he is our best recruiter besides gundy.
You are right, I am sure that was not the intention. Just tired of the Kish bashing..I guess..
Kids are not required to strictly chose a school based on their position coach. As I am sure you know, each coach has a designated area in which they recruit. Viney, being from California, probably does a lot of recruiting in that area. That means that Kelly and Viney have a good relationship, as I am sure they talk a lot. Kish also recruits Kelly, due to the fact that he would be his position coach, and I am sure he is doing a good job since we are still considered a top school for him. However, just because Kelly wants to go wherever Viney goes does not mean Kish has done a bad job, it just means that Kelly feels a better connection with Viney. If anything, this should point to the importance that BS and the rest of the staff finds a place for Viney because he appears to be an excellent young recruiter who the players seem to really connect with.
Understood
Good fun here. Nothing like debating what may or may not happen and who is at fault.
Super K , would OU be interested in South Oak Cliff 4 star Texas running back Jordan Stevenson that just became available for recruiting again?
Not K, but I wouldn’t think so, fwiw.
Out of curiosity, why don’t you think so, Jordan? I haven’t’ watched his film so idk the name
I’d say primarily b/c he’s a 2015 kid and they already have four pretty talented RBs already on campus (five if you want to include Daniel Brooks). Not sure why they’d feel the need to another.
Makes sense. Any thoughts on where he might end up at?
Saw Texas Tech suggested this morning, evidently his former h.s. school coach is on staff in Lubbock now.
That would make sense. I think I saw somewhere on twitter suggesting Nebraska but who knows. I hope the best for him
Well for one we don’t know if we get Whaley in the 2016 class. Second he is teammates with Prentice McKinney, and third he runs a 4.37 40 and fits the type of backs Lincoln Riley seems to like to run his offense.
All true, but you only want so many scholarships tied up w/ RBs and as it stands today, they have plenty.
We can’t let Mr. Viney go that would be detrimental to the program. We need that young and upcoming coaching mentality to relate towards the youth because thats what they relate to. I just hope Coach Stoops understands that also.
Stoops likes Cali kids so I’m sure he will find a place for Viney. Also, this could be Kelly putting in a plug for Viney too. Stoops realizes how much Viney has done for the program and I’m looking forward to seeing how he uses him after December.
The word is that OU does not want to shell out the money at this time for a recruiting staff, like the SEC does? Why not just make Vinney your guy and be done with it?
If he was ready to coach at OU he would have been offered the job when it came up.
If this is true, then its idiotic. I would think it wouldn’t make sense seeing as to how they just dropped $400MM on the new facilities and stadium.
The man is critical to the squad, if anything because he relates to them from his youth. The same was said of Monty and how he connected to them
More than one moderator thinks the hiring of Cooks seals the migration of viney to another college………….probably a SEC school…………………..
Ahhhhh! Our daily dose of “the sky is falling”.
But to your point, I never heard that. To whom are you referring as sources for Viney on the way out?
And why would one have anything to do with the other?
What’s the length of Cooks contract?
Well i believe we HAVE TO find a way to keep the guy who will help us get the biggest recruit in D for i dont know how long
I completely agree I just hope it doesn’t happen twice to us especially after Coach Montgomery left but who can blame him though its the freaking Packers who would give that up
If the NFL comes calling, so be it, i just hope we don’t lose him because we couldn’t find him a spot or some other excuse…
At this point Id be willing to trade Viney for Mike Stoops if thats what it takes to keep him.
I totally agree. That would probably be a little drastic off top. But I would make him the secondary coach and move Coach Kerry to defensive coordinator depending on the season. But thats just my opinion.
Maybe Bob’s hoping Mike and D, along with the rest of team can have a great year, and then Mike can get a head gig somewhere again… Then hire Viney to assist new D coordinator, Cooks.
That sounds very possible and would be good for everyone. I’m sure Mike wants to get out of the shadows of Bob.
I really think Mike is done being a head coach. His best bet of getting out of Bob’s shadow is either getting in Mark Stoop’s shadow or trying for an NFL coordinator job.
Mike is like Gomer Jones and Gary Gibbs, an excellent coach but not HC. Gomer was kept to Bud’s success. Gary was key to Barry’s success. Mike was key to Bob winning his title.
Mike isn’t going anywhere. I think they’ll find a spot for Viney.
Freakin hire him to coach safeties or CB under Cook.
This. Players make coaches in a real sense ask the King. Totally agree.
Seems odd that a kid would latch on to playing where a GA is currently at, and a GA that doesn’t even coach the position this kid is going to play.
But if that’s how it is, I certainly hope we find a spot for Viney to stay at OU.
not just for Kelly but Viney is a good recruiter, something OU can’t afford to lose
https://twitter.com/Jordan_Esco/status/624612934463832064
huh? almost made it? did his car break down on the way up?
Maybe stopped for lunch or gas?
ok that must be it
If Chip Viney was retained in December(hopefully). What job would he receive? And who moves on to open the spot up?
You do realize at this time this is all just talk?
Last time there was an opening he didm;t get it, he just might not be ready to coach at OU.
Just talk? On an internet message board, gee you dont say
With all the hype about the offense and offensive firepower. Many have forgotten about Dmitri Flowers. I think he could be one of the greatest X-factors in all of college football. He is the Joe Mixon of Fullbacks in that he is an exceptional route runner and has very good hands.
He will play a huge role this year on offense, and with him and Joe Mixon on the field at the same time in 3 wide 2 back sets, Lincoln Riley can draw up all sorts of mismatches out of that formation alone. He would be open a lot
Diamond formation…GL to LBs covering both Mixon and Flowers and maintaining their gaps against Perine coming downhill
With Flowers and Mixon both being able to motion into or out of the backfield as the defense dictates, plus Andrews at TE, and Shepard as the lone WR… that would be an awesome unstoppable GL package. All the beef to line plunge, or the ability to go 4 wide for an easy toss and catch.
Believe it, there should no more freakin goal line problems…and settling for Honeycutt misses.
Yes!
Free the Tree!!
You can put Perine, Flowers and Mixon in the backfield at the same time and the opponent wouldn’t know how to prepare. We have a lethal backfield. The x-factor is who will be the qb for it?
You kno I would love to say this is true. But knowing OU and how they’ll operate, just like they treated Millard (fans begging to give him 10-15 touches a game) they will probably barely use Flowers this season. Sorry, yes he probably has the best package of tools on the team but trust me. The load will be Perine, Mixon, Ross. In that order. Also just the scheme alone puts Flowers at a disadvantage, i.e.(spread Attack) fb rarely used. Usually one or two back sets (hopefully we’ll see diamond formation a lot, even that they couldn’t implament enough) So in a nutshell like I extensively drew out, Flowers (sadly) minimal touches, prob more out backfield catching (Maybe).
Just reread the post from earlier this year on what Lincoln
Riley’s offense looks like and man, I cant wait to see it! Reading that post
makes me think that most sportswriters are being lazy and just calling it “Air
Raid” when it reality it sounds like he runs quite a bit and even uses pro
style personnel and formations regularly. Might we see something along the
lines of the ’08 offense? That was my favorite offense that I’ve seen a college
team field personnel- and scheme-wise and I still maintain that OU would’ve
beaten Florida if Murray hadn’t been hurt. I love hearing that he runs packaged
plays with run-pass options. This won’t be another Leach offense.
will be interesting to see how he attacks the d’s, will the o have a good dose of unpredictability, the unexpected……….would like to see a well-rehearsed trick play or two per game
TO ANYONE WHO KNOWS : If Chip Viney was made “Associate Director of Recruiting” to be basically Cale Gundy’s assistant in the recruiting department could he still have contact with the players and be coaching them on the field, or is there a rule that prevents administrative staff from coaching players? I know we are only allowed 9 assistant coaches but can anybody be on the field coaching players that Bob wants there?
So he is our recruiting committee that the SEC hired Kevin Steel and others to do at Alabama?
Thats a good question. Its like if schmitty hired a new assistant.. they are allowed on the field to coach players if stoops wanted them, right? Make him director of recruiting, and allow him to “aggressively observe” the DB group. lol
update added
I’ve refreshed and don’t see it.
https://twitter.com/A_Kendall11/status/624625125422448641
Love it when recruits do this!
I saw that Haughton tweeted out Whaley’s name as well. I’m not up on how twitter is delt with in recruiting, but are the current players allowed to mention recruits by name? Either way, I hope we land this guy. He has track speed and is a great threat in the passing game.
He’s ready to be the next AD…This offense ought to be a magnet for great backs. Not only will they get a lot of carries, but they will become what the pros want, a rb who can be a threat in the passing game (Jammal Charles. McCoy, Murray)…
Not nearly as physically imposing as AD in person. I’ll settle for a Little Joe type with absolutely no qualms though. Edit for spelling.
😉
Where you been?
By the Whaley phone.
Just got back home a week ago. Been on the lake and at the creek. Only had a cell phone for emergencies. Good times.
It seems that everyone is overlooking Alex Ross. I mean, I get the fact that Perine is a beast and Mixon by all accounts looks the part. I really think this new offense will benefit Ross(many others as well)…. Jet sweeps, swing passes/quick screens… Etc…. more so than any other weapon we have he is always one step away from the house! Can’t wait for the season to get here already! Boomer sooner!
I feel you on this. We will see Ross making some more house calls this season. Boomer
Sooner!
Somebody has to be the odd man out.
I think Ross will have his moments, heck he has the last two seasons. But he won’t get enough regular carries to make much of an impact offensively, unless we see an injury.
Even though I think that Ross may be the odd man out when it comes to carries, I can see him getting plenty of touches. I doubt Perine will play every down and I think that Mixon can/will be a huge threat in the passing game (from what I’ve seen of his HS tape) so he may line up as a slot receiver quite a bit, allowing Ross to get onto the field to make plays.
With Mixon in the slot, I could see the offense doing sweep plays to him with a running start and taking it to the house!
I foresee great things happening at the Palace on the Prairie!
http://a.espncdn.com/stadiums/ncf/www.panoramas.com.UOK2.jpg
I think you’ll get Perine absolutely wearing out the defense and then Ross will come in for a change of pace and just run right by everyone.
That picture should be shown to every recruit with the caption
“Field of Dreams”
I agree. Ross is a homerun hitter. He has skills and I have faith they’ll be used.
I’d REALLY like to see OU run the misdirection play they ran against Texass, when AD lit them up, this time using Ross. That play was so effective against the whorns, as well as several other teams that season. With Ross’s speed, I’d be willing to bet he’d treat it like a kickoff without as much ground to cover.
Which sort of brings up a thought in my own head…Why haven’t we used that same play since then?
Same here, never made sense.
I’d like to see us run a successful Hook and Ladder. That’s been a craw-sticker for several seasons now. 😛
Good point. Glimpse of this in the Spring game.
I agree with you completely. Ross is an excellent back, will play in the League for a few years, barring injury, IMO, and as you said, will do even better in the spread.
Whaley

I worry about the Mayfield “fatigue”….. Unless we let TK9 use his legs a bit more, I don’t have much interest in seeing him take snaps for the Sooners this year. First post btw! I’ve been checking this site regularly for a year or so now and thought it’s finally time I join in the discussions.
First of all Welcome from the group! I think QB is going to be so different in this offense anybody could surprise us. I hope it all turns out well and I have faith that it will.
This is the unknown factor and I think a HUGE point that needs to be made over and over. This is a different offense with a different coach. There is no telling what that means yet. Going off last year might be jumping the gun.
I agree. Look at all the average Qbs that had unbelievable stats with the spread. If you watch Heupel during his career ( we thought he was really good at the time), he didn’t have a great arm and a lot of his throws weren’t on the mark. White was a lot more accurate, even on short throws.
Truth is, the spread uses space. Defenses hate space. 4, 5 and 6 potential targets means little chance of double teams. Preparing for this kind of attack takes weeks, not days.
The key, IMHO, is which one is the best leader.
A lot of short crossing routes and all the movement in this offense can help TK out a ton, and probably hide many mistakes. Remember, though he lobbed them a bit sometimes, TK was pretty damn accurate on long balls too. And TK will be able to scramble when he needs too. This type of qb running can be very effective in spread offenses. Just look at how many teams struggled with a spread system AND a qb who had some wheels…
and, welcome to posting!
I guess your definition of accurate on long balls is different than mine. Jason White was accurate throwing deep passes. I only ever saw that from TK in the Sugar Bowl.
Okay,
Number 1, you’re right. I’m not trying to compare TK to J. White. Number 2, Let me clarify: “TK was good at throwing long ball to S. Shepard.” There, that fixes it.
Throwing to Shep fixes lots of things, doesn’t it.
The new offense could help TK9 for sure. It’s a scheme that I think masks the shortcomings of any QB. However from my perspective, TK9 is just so incredibly inconsistent with his accuracy. His deep balls are decent at best and his short to intermediate throws are often inaccurate as well. He also forces passes to covered receivers. Hopefully he made drastic improvement over the offseason tho because my faith in Mayfield isn’t much higher! So much unknown going into the season is both exciting and terrifying lol
Pretty accurate assessment IMO. The air raid is very forgiving for minor mistakes made by multiple positions esp the QB. I look at Trevor’s Sugar Bowl performance as his “optimal potential”. His consistancy has not been optimal. Mayfield’s career (again IMO) is based entirely on one great performance in a loosing effort against Baylor. Again probably his “optimal potential”. He was no more accurate or consistant in his efforts. Both have exciting upsides and as you mentioned “terrifying” downsides.
Welcome!!!
don’t agree with you on the QBs, but welcome!!!
Best guess is Viney moves to quality control coach or Director of Recruiting. Maybe DBs coach if Cooks leaves after this year(very unlikely in my opinion)
There are any number of possibilities. OU doesn’t currently have any available QC positions, so they’d have to hope somebody moves on (or “help” somebody move on I suppose).
In terms of Dir. of Recruiting type position, I just don’t know if Viney would even have any interest in that type of a job. My assumption is he’d like to be an assistant somewhere as his next position.
If it is true that Kish is gone after this year, would Viney be able to move into a LB coach?
Could he? Sure, maybe. Would that be where he’s best suited? No, not IMO. He’s a former DB and has spent a majority of his time at OU coaching DBs (or at least that’s my understanding of it), so to ask him to coach another position and one, I’m assuming, he’s not all that familiar with doesn’t necessarily make a ton of sense to me.
Maybe the site is not up to date, but per the ou site, there is no defensive QC position at this time. And that corresponds with my memory, as our defensive QC left in the spring.
Hey I have a question for you guys. What happened with Lamar Jackson the DB from Cali? Did we just come in to late? Or is it a guy that is expected just to stay on the West Coast? I have not heard his name on here.
https://twitter.com/Jordan_Esco/status/624642316519608320
https://twitter.com/TomVH/status/624641839300276224
No…..bummer. It’s times like this that I wonder what kind of relationships or recruiting Diron Renolds is building up. I know he just came in a few months back.
For the record…..some of us didn’t
Fun offense (yes, that matters). And aggressive defense ! OU is on the way back, we will see this year.
Glad he found somewhere with a better fit, I however don’t miss him. It is still too soon for me to forget all of the times I would watch his OU defense and curse at the TV.
Denial is good, keeps you oblivious to facts.
Because he couldn’t stop anybody here either. ACC a perfect fit for him.
Couldn’t have said it better. Mike Stooos’ evolving solution for big 12 offenses is exactly what got Venables pushed out the door.
Maybe, but I would say $$$$ and Bob’s little bro coming back pushed him out the door more than anything.
Correct answer
Pot stirrer. : )
Because, on average, his defense at OU were average and he also “struck out” on many recruits while at OU? Spitballing here.
How are his replacements doing?
In 2013, better. 2014 not so much…I’d say even steven going into 2015. Agree?
Depends on how you’re approaching it. From a strictly on the field perspective, I could get on board w/ all things being even. But if you’re factoring recruiting into the equation, and I don’t know why you wouldn’t considering it’s a huge part of the job, then they might not even really be comparable.
I don’t know who recruited who at Clemson. But I suppose you are right about the recruiting angle. I mean, Clemson had the 4th best class per Rivals with 4 four star Defensive players and a 5 star. But Hulk and Deberry are not something to sneeze at.
Clemson average star 3.61 to OU’s 3.58 average.
Let’s take a look and compare. Your tweet was specifically about recruiting. I added in the defense part. Thus, I’ll specifically address the recruiting.
If we use Soonerscoop.com’s identification of the recruiter for a player, then we can compare. However, what you mentioned was not really about comparing Brent to someone else because the reason for “us wanting him out of Norman” can only be based on the information that was available at the time (2004-2012). We can’t make a decision on whether “we want Brent out of Norman” if the information isn’t available (i.e., the future hasn’t happened yet). But, let’s do it anyway.
I don’t know the accuracy of SS’s data. Their data start at 2006 for Brent.
Soonerscoop says:
2006
Brandon Crow
Demarco Murray
Chris Patterson
Daniel Tabon
Malcolm Williams
2007
Austin Box
Mike Reed
Jameell Fleming
Londell Taylor
2008
Mike Balogun
JR Bryant

Joseph Ibiloye
David Sims
Casey Walker
RJ Washington
2009
Jaydan Bird
Jarrett Brown
Justin Chaisson
Demontre Hurst
Gus Jones
Ronnell Lewis
Marcus Trice
Tom Wort
2010
Rashod Favors
Aaron Franklin
Geneo Grissom
Corey Nelson
Damon Williams
2011
Nila Kasitati
Bennett Okotcha
Frank Shannon
Danzel Williams
Mike starts here:
2012
Gary Simon
Zach Sanchez
2013
Dakota Austin
Stanvon Taylor
Hatari Byrd
Ahmad Thomas
2014
Marcus Green
Vontre McQuinnie
Steven Parker
Tito Windham
2015
Kahlil Haughton
Will Sunderland
PJ Mbanasor
Perhaps it’s a little unfair to compare the recruiting because Mike hasn’t had a full four years to completely develop some players. However, we’re having fun here.
I think we can all see many players that Brent (allegedly) recruited that didn’t do anything. I recall quite clearly that many thought that too many of Brent’s recruits were “projects” and clearly not “Johnny 5-star.”
Perhaps it’s a little too early for us to draw solid conclusions about the final quality of the players that were (allegedly) recruited by Mike.
BV was one of the best coaches we had. Btw, it was HIS decision to leave and not ours (atleast don’t think it was Bob’s), so there is THAT.
I wonder if Whaley might commit publicly before his all American game. Seems like he’s getting a lot of love from OU on Twitter.
Saw on twitter where Caleb Kelly’s mom said that no coach will be a determining factor in where her son goes…I’m guessing she saw the Open Post for today.

Cause momma says….lol!
Don’t mess with your mother 🙂 or mine
You got that right! 🙂
Irregardless of the ‘Kelly factor’, OU needs to find a place for Chip Viney. The guy has been instrumental in keeping more than just that ‘Cali connection’ open for recruiting. Several guys, like Sanchez and Mbanasor, have talked about Viney being a main reason for choosing OU as well as he teaching skills.
HAHA……momma steps in and asserts her superiority.
https://twitter.com/KahlilHaughton/status/624652857900314624
I think I figured out the Viney problem…Mike leaves after the staff finally realizes that he can’t find a defense to stop spread offenses. Month comes back on a white horse, finds some way to get Iman Marshall to transfer and picks up Rashard Lawrence. Kish stays around one more year because he’s cool with recruits and has a mean grill game. Viney takes his tiny self over and coaches Caleb Kelly and the other OLB’s.
After all this happens, a year later we move conferences (not the Pac-12). There aren’t as many spread offenses and we finally run a true 3-4 defense. Bob and Boren do a huge chest bump on the stage when being handed the NC trophy.
so do we get Tyree in all of this?
Yes, him and Dahu become bff and each go for 1000 receiving yard seasons next year. It’s plausible.
Truthfully, are we even in it with Tyree? I haven’t heard TFB talk about many WR’s.
We made his top-10 which doesn’t mean a lot but we’re on the map. 247 suggests he’s interested in OU and coaches have been by to see him a few times. He retweets OU stuff so that’s an ok sign. If we can get him on campus I would feel much better about our chances but I have faith in Simmons/Riley to put us in the best position to land him.
Heck, Westfield isn’t far from my house and his QB works out with the same QB coach as my son. He QB was at the elite 11 and has a lot of scholly’s too. Heck’ve a combo for them this year. I will be watching them play this upcoming year. I’ve met Tyree a couple of times while he was working with his QB and QB coach. Good kid.
Pac-12 is where I want to go.
No more calls, please. We have a winner.
Me too
It just doesn’t makes sense (to me at least) to be in a conference with no bordering states and spans 3 timezones. I also see the benefits to it too.
This list may be some ridiculous number and my curiosity may be all for not, but I’ll be interested to see if OU makes the cut here.
https://twitter.com/DCinco__5/status/624676153735798784
They may, but I don’t see him ever playing in Norman, as it stands today. Can that change? Absolutely.
Forty three days.
That’s all I’ve got…almost.

Showing us your tots?
I’ll give you what I got when I get it. 🙂
Tit for tot
Or for naught. :-0
better not on this board…
Mmm Mmm Taters!!
I’m just ready for this season to start and I truly believe we have a legitimate shot of being undefeated going into our last three games. The only team that scares me is Baylor. TCU I think we can handle and I think Bobby Stoops will want to destroy OSU due to the hellacious offseason they (in his part caused himself) him. The most heartbreaking thing is that I’ll be at basic training for the whole regular season which is devastating to me. So that’s why I read as much as I can on these posts to get an idea of where we are at. Stoops’ teams in the past were founded by defense! Tommy Harris, Teddy Lehman, Rockky Calmus, Brandon Everage, Derek Straight, Roy Williams, Dan Cody, Torrence Marshall and too many others. I just long for the day’s our defense was feared. Lastly, I don’t put a lot of stock (although some) into “star ratings” by Rivals and what not. Remember guys like Antwon Savage, Damien Mackey, Matt Anderson, & Q?!? Those guys weren’t heralded recruits. Let’s just hope these guys can buy into the program and Stoops appears to have a fire lit under his butt for the season and I love. Boomer Sooner
Great post. Good luck in basic and then keep your head down!
And watch thy “six.”
Always!
Will do!
I appreciate your decision to serve your country in the military. I know what it means to miss a season. I spent all of 1973 season in Korea. Only got to see one game and it was a delayed broadcast and the reception sucked. Still enjoyed watching OU pound Texas 52-13. Good luck.
Thanks for the kind words
I’m going into the Military after College. The idea of missing a season sucks. Good luck!
Hope you’re going Marine. 😉
Best of luck, thank you and if the situation fits…stay in touch with your Mama.
Oh, I love the Marines but I’ve got my heart set on something else. Haha, I’m sure I’ll still be posting here when that time comes around.
You missed all the fun… now it’s over and you may have to serve a long while to get another chance.
You won’t miss the season…I serve and have been deployed multiple times and have always been able to catch some games…albeit not live. Even in Afghanistan, I was able to catch games.
Don’t expect anything. Give more than you get. You’ll enjoy the military.
Yeah, hopefully my basic training isn’t during Football season like Atkinson. That would suck.
Good for you, young lady.
NCO’s love those “butter bars.” 🙂
http://www.defense.gov/about/insignias/images/ar_2ndlt.gif
No “butter bars” for me. I’m going to enlist.
With a degree you can go OCS. Officers make more money, get better housing and good ones are essential for leadership.
Well, right now I’m only at a 2 year college. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll transfer to a 4 year after this year or just enlist. Regardless, I’m not Officer material and I’m not joining for the money or comfort.
You strike me as a capable person and one with leadership potential.
I did two years of college before enlisting, got to travel, have some wonderful adventures, made some friends for life and used my G.I. bill to finish my bachelors and grad school.
I’m pulling for you irrespective of the path you choose.
I appreciate you saying so. I’ve still got time to decide so who knows.
The Military was one of the best things that ever happened in my life. Got me “squared away” so to speak. Those OU games will be on video somewhere and don’t be surprised if you get to see one or two live on TV.
By the way, agree on your perspective above. BOOM! Thanks in advance for your Service! God Bless America!
That’s the attitude I am going in with. I’ve already graduated college and just wanted to mix things up in serving my country and going in as 11B. I’m missing my sisters wedding, another sisters birth of my nephew, and OU football. Leave in a month and come back early December.
Happy Birthday Joe, please be smart this time!
Hey TFB, how long is Whaley visiting for? I’m itching for an update with his impressions.
5 years
But has he called you yet?
😉
Think it is hilarious that the Tulsa World has been posting articles written by TFB on their website. Maybe everybody is starting to learn that this is the best place to come in the world for info about OU Football!
TFB should be getting paid for the publishing
If you have espnu, the replay of the UCF vs ECU game is on in five minutes.
Thanks man. Just changed channels.
You are most welcome.
There is a reason it is one of espn’s top 25 games of 2014.
Great game!
A nail biter!
thanks. recorded and watched some of it. very excited when I see it. Shepherd is a better WR than Harding, and I believe so is Westbrooke. maybe even Quick, too. Riley has so much better athletes at OU than ECU it’s not even funny. WRs/RBs–not even close, IMO. and yes, our QBs can throw those passes. lots of formations, motion, quick pace, etc–all that in itself shoudl improve the O play. I think OU gets much better this yr b/c of it. Defense will even look better even if they played like last yr, imo, b/c I don’t expect so many 3 and outs from the offense. Those make a D look terrible in the stats column.
I do think our D will be better. All DBs and backups have much more experience, plus 5 DBs I think we play this yr. Parker will be vastly improved w/yr in league and Will Johnson and Parker really help. Probably better w/Thomas too, and if Sanchez c/stay healthy. All backups another yr in system but probably have hard time holding back FR dbs we signed. More experience and depth at DBs plus w/4 DL better pressure on QB, all shoudl help the DBs look better. LBs better and depth for a change. DL better and depth. yes, i think better in spite of losing phillips. he took plays off and romar isn’t that far behind and perhaps a nfl lineman himself some day. maybe not 2nd round, we’ll see, but if he doesn’t take plays off, make up for phillips imo. defensive system probably fits us better this yr, also, and having all DBs in same room should help. 4 DL should help DBs.
I’m pretty excited about this yr. we we’re that far off last yr. Should field a much better team athletically/experience-wise and better systems on O and D to boot.
The one thing that really stood out in this game was how little time the ECU QB had, his OL couldn’t handle the DL.
I really liked seeing Coach Riley’s calm, teaching with his QB when he made a mistake.
I really like what I’ve seen of the Lincoln Riley “Air Raid” offense. Question for someone more knowledgeable than myself, how is Riley as a playcaller? A great scheme is one thing, but if I can predict your next play from my couch (josh heupel) then the team won’t win the amount of games we hope for :/ I hope to hear that he’s very unpredictable and creative in big moments.
Heard he has trouble in the end zone but ECU doesn’t have Perine so…
ECU’s red zone numbers were very good. They had problems with teams that had superior talent. Their conference opponents couldn’t stop them, South Carolina barely beat them with a couple late red zone stands. Nationally their red zone offenses were were 5th, 25th, 6th and 55th last 4 yrs under Riley. Most people agree that injuries in 2014 hurt their offense more than anything that year.
https://twitter.com/dcinco__5/status/624716685627363328
OU made the 1st cut! Says ’12’ but can only make out 10 in the photo. Not seeing aTm or ‘horns.
Horns made the cut, aggies did not.
OU lock
Replay: E. Carolina vs. UCF ESPNU 6PM CDT…
For anyone else who may be interested, this game is also on YouTube on the “1 hour football” channel, as well as several other ECU games from last season.
Like EastTex said, ECU is playing on ESPNU right now. Perhaps a small glimpse of what the offense could look like.
OU may have already lost out on Draper (Could change, but that’s where it’s at at the moment). If they loose out on Kelly too then Kish and Mike better be gone. LB recruiting has been sub-par at best. Especially if we really do lose out on one of the best LBers to come out of the state of OK in a while. Should’ve pulled the trigger on him a heck of a lot sooner than they did IMO.
A lot can happen in a few years…cant wait for the season to start
LB recruiting has been “sub-par at best”? Deberry is subpar? McGinnis? I don’t know what went south with Draper, but I would venture a guess and say that none of us do. Maybe it’s something as simple as Draper liked OSU more than us. As for Kelly, I think we’ve already lost him to Oregon. I wouldn’t blame that on Kish. I’d blame that on last season. We really sucked at the end. As a result, the OU brand is down now. I think for big-time recruits — or any recruit for that matter — to take us seriously, we have to step up and start kicking some “big-time” ass. Winning will cure our problems.
it also could be that he thinks OU will get kelly or others and thinks he’ll have a better chance to play early somewhere else. sometimes it is as simple as that.
Agree. There are many reasons the kid chose OSU over OU and none of them have anything to do with Kish. One day people are going to realize the guy is a damn fine coach.
Good coach bad recruiter.
Bad? Really? I’m truly curious: based on what?
Bad recruiter? Really? I’m just curious but what makes you think that?
It is really easy to go off the deep end when it comes to recruiting. However, the roster isn’t without some quality, very young LBers at OU. You will never see me defending Mike and Kish, but I don’t see the need to panic quite yet. Below is the OU LBers currently at OU.
1 Alexander, Dominique LB 6-0 229 Jr. Tulsa, Okla. (Booker T. Washington HS)
18 Bolton, Curtis LB 6-2 229 RFr. Murrieta, Calif. (Vista Murrieta HS)
23 Bond, Devante LB 6-1 236 Sr. Sacramento, Calif. (Sierra CC)
22 DeBerry, Ricky LB 6-2 240 Fr. Mechanicsville, Va. (Atlee HS)
26 Evans, Jordan LB 6-3 242 Jr. Norman, Okla. (Norman North HS)
9 Evans, Tay LB 6-2 235 RFr. Allen, Texas (Allen HS)
42 Hunter, Ruben LB 6-1 217 RSo. Oklahoma City, Okla. (Putnam City North HS)
40 Lindley, P.L. LB 6-2 267 RSr. Round Rock, Texas (Stony Point HS)
50 McGinnis, Arthur LB 6-2 225 Fr. New Orleans, La. (Warren Easton HS)
51 Newhouse-Parker, Cade LB 6-1 231 So. Norman, Okla. (Norman High School)
31 Okoronkwo, OgbonniaClick here to hear it LB 6-1 237 RSo. Houston, Texas (Alief Taylor HS)
84 Rodriguez, Dalton LB 6-6 236 So. Broken Arrow, Okla. (Tulsa)
20 Shannon, Frank LB 6-1 238 RSr. Dallas, Texas (Skyline HS)
19 Striker, Eric LB 6-0 223 Sr. Seffner, Fla. (Armwood HS)
57 Aubel, Jack LS 6-3 221 Fr. Coral Springs, Fla. (Saint Thomas Aquinas HS)
well said.
Right, there are plenty of quality players on that list!! Don’t know some of them.
Tell DeBerry and THE HULK that they are sub-par!
Despite what certain people want you to believe deberry is here because of Montgomery and kish had to beat Arizona that’s it to get McGinnis.
I don’t believe this is completely true, either.
I have read favorable comments by both Hulk and Deberry concerning Kish.
the only person I ever heard deberry mention during his recruitment was Montgomery it wasn’t till after Montgomery left that he mentioned kish.
I’m with you bud. I read favorable comments by everyone concerned about Kish except from the fan boards.
With what we do know, there is much more that we don’t.
I don’t view him as the weak link on defense, either coaching or recruiting.
Sorry just seen you beat me to the punch..
Agree with you about monty I’m not one of the ones that think the sky’s falling but I’m really missing the fire and intensity he bought to the recruiting trail on the defensive side even heard he was in on getting Kenyon frison
How important is it who brought the players in. If Kish manages to develop them in All Americans does he still have to go?
Deberry was bought in by monty
Bought or brought?
a couple of years back OU (Mike Stoops) played ZERO LBs. We had a great one, too, Corey Nelson, a super LB, and he couldn’t get on the field. That certainly wasn’t Kish’s fault. I’ve always thought Kish had a little trouble overcoming that. Can you imagine trying to recruit a super LB and all the other coaches are telling them that OU doesn’t play LBs? or if you go to OU you may not see the field? Now, I wouldn’t be against OU getting another LB coach, but not for the reason most think–sometimes a new coach adds a new spark. But it amazes me how many good LBs we have on campus when we went one year w/o playing LBs. It doesn’t appear to me that we are w/o depth or quality at LB as some have cried for the past two years, including on this site and every site you might go to. It doesn’t appear to me that they are right about that when I look at the LB roster.
Dude, seriously? I’m not a Kish supporter but I wouldn’t fire anybody just because he couldn’t pull in a particular recruit. If Mike can’t field a great defense and the linebackers are lacking in good fundamentals THEN they should be fired. Players want to go where they will be developed and helped into the NFL. The results on the field will help with the recruiting so let’s focus on THAT first. I’m disappointed Draper committed to the Pokes too, but his high school career is not even close to being completed so there is still plenty of time for him to pull that commitment.
My opinion, we will be pleased with the LB’s this year.
Throwing the ball in non-contact drills hurts your shoulder so much that you had to take a month off?
Yeah that’s normal. That’s why knight will be the starter
Edit: and what it sounds like is they held him out as a precaution, and let him throw on the last day of 7 on 7 so he could get some work in before the break and before training camp. Which from what I’ve seen will be starting in about 10 days
Starting to think you are right about Knight.
I honestly don’t think that is a good thing, but I’m willing to give him a shot in the new offense with the new OC.
I’m almost there too… Seems like Knights job to lose, especially now.
I’m not convinced. I love TK, not down on him at all like some are, but think Mayfield starts 1st game and thereafter unless he is injured.
TE Gresham Joins Cardinals on 1 year deal….
http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/13314626/arizona-cardinals-sign-tight-end-jermaine-gresham
Damn. Hoping for my Pack to get him.
Yea, I was liking the fit with the Pack or Saints (I was hoping Saints, for how they use TE’s..) Really just want to see him with a good QB. Cards will be okay for him, unless Palmer gets hurt again.. At least he’s back in some red and white, and not orange and black!!
RUFUS!!!
updates added
OU lock
Is this a thing now?
…
Yep it’s to offset the extreme posters who think no one in their right mind would choose OU.
But also I do think Caleb kelly will end up at OU and hopefully he isn’t the only Cali kid. I think button and youngquist will have OU in their top 2’s
esco……..when did the outfb site first appear…….thxs
Anything on Whaley yet?
WVU game is shaping up to be a good weekend for recruiting. I hope it ends up ALOT better than the last recruiting weekend. One more week till camp….cant wait.
If you are in the bottom right Of a poster it’s not looking too good.. the teams you like are the first ones that pop into your mind
But OU is the only school in the exact same place on both posters
You all read too much into that stuff.
Someone else put the images together for him. I wouldn’t take it as the most accurate representation of what he intends to do at this point in time.
DJ is not coming to OU…..99.99999% positive.
Hope music is different!!
Am I turning into a media minded person by asking the question of why is TK and Cody in pic but Baker is not?
https://instagram.com/p/5fkX2fjvmv/
Taken at 7 v 7, so he wasn’t there.
Right but the last report said he was throwing at 7v7 this week. That is why it took me by surprise.
Wednesday I believe.
I think this picture started floating around Wednesday night tho. Dun dun dun
Can anyone name every player in this picture? I can’t. John Humphrey posted this earlier in the week. Obo posted to the tweet: “you guys look like cheese balls”.
Maybe he’s the one taking the pic?
Okay, here..
Ha ha ha ha. Awesome.
He hasn’t been practicing in 7 on 7’s which TFB have mentioned so it’s no surprise he wouldn’t be in a pic.
Hoping with stable of running backs Lincoln Riley has our offense will look similar to Kevin Wilson’s
Doubt it will look anything like Wilson’s offense. I imagine Coach Riley like a mad scientist on the off season imagining all the things he can do with the tools he’s never had. He has the opportunity to do things he’s never done before with the weapons he has here and I think he will.
Wilson was innovative himself 08 was one of the best offense in sooner history plus he had Landry Jones playing at his best til he handed the reins Heupel
Wilson wasn’t very creative at all IMO. I think Riley has a few tricks up his sleeve we’ve never seen before. He’s already messing around with lining up Shepherd. He has a ton of weapons to play with and opportunities he’s never had before.
Just think how much better that offense could have been if they actually had an elite level wr. Kelly Iglesias and manny Johnson were solid but none were as talented at wr as Gresham Murray and Bradford were at their positions.
I watched the 08 RRR the other night. Bradford – McCoy duel and it was a good game. During the game, I was watching our WR’s and I’m on the same page with you. We didn’t have a great WR, not even close.
BTW, our MLB Reynolds went down and in comes our backup – Brandon Crow. Venables depth at LB? It started a long time ago and we are trying to catch up.
I agree about Venables LB corps. Losing Reynolds killed us in that game and we struggled for weeks when Nic Harris moved from safety to LB before they finally trusted Box to play. When Box came in that gave us two R-Fr at LB, he and Lewis. When Box got hurt we got Balogun.
I’ll take this LB corps over almost any that Venables recruited and though unproven, I’ll take this WR corps over the ’08 team, too.
With you all the way on both our WR’s & LB’s today. I think our LB’s depth is the best it’s been in last 10 years.
Venables didn’t trust Box but proved him wrong. Also, to think Lofton started one year for OU is unreal. I’ve heard that is why Lofton isn’t so vocal about OU since he left.
I will add that the ’08 did feature R-Fr Ryan Broyles and we got a glimpse of his greatness to come, but other than him and Gresham the other WRs were capable not amazing, like in previous years.
Saying Kevin Wilson’s offense wasn’t creative is like saying July in Oklahoma is cold as ice.
The ’08 offense was THE BEST offense in OU history and 2nd in NCAA FBS history, 2nd only to FSU in 2014.
Am I the only one that thinks this logo would look good on the helmet instead of the solid white? Not saying replace it but maybe on an alternate.
I like that idea. That logo looks good on just about anything.
It would be hard to see that logo clearly from the stands…but the logo looks great on anything.
Pokes lose a ’16 commit.. This is from Alex King..
2016 Lancaster, TX WR, Tyrell Alexander (@T_Real07) tells me he’s decommitted from #OKState and re-opened his recruitment. @WEBOrecruiting1
Personal question: Anyone know where one could find a stamp which would imprint the interlocking OU on a golf ball? Or a stencil? Would love to mark my golf balls with that. I’ve been totally unable to find something like that. I’ve found balls premarked but I’d rather use the ones I like to play with.
the last sentence is always dangerous on a message board………an idea, look for a local creative artist and let them brainstorm on your request
Not sure. But if you find one, let me know.
bingo!….click the sports team tab……..
Thanks for the link but those are already marked. I was looking for a thing I could use to mark balls. I live across the street from a golf course and I get six or seven ‘free’ golf balls a week. I keep some for play and some (top flights), I throw back.
There is a company that makes a shell just large enough for half a ball to fit into. It has a stencil outline you can use with a sharpie to mark the ball. OU will not license them to use the OU logo.
Any thing new on the Du’Vonta Lampkin saga?

Adrian Peterson shows off new “Armor of God” tattoo….
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/25250144/look-adrian-peterson-shows-off-new-armor-of-god-tattoo?ref=yfp
Random thought for the day…We talk about great offensive coaches like Mike Leach, Kevin Wilson, Hal Mumme, Kevin Sumlin, Steve Spurrier, Rich Rodriguez, Art Briles, Gus Malzahn, Bobby Petrino, and lately, guys like Lincoln Riley, Dana Holgorsen, Sonnie Cumbie.
But there are some coaches who are rarely talked about but were great offensive minds:
1) Joe Tiller of Wyoming and later at Purdue was all over the coaching map as a DL coach, DC, OL coach, OC and finally a head coach. He had his own “basketball on grass” offense that turned both Wyoming’s and Purdue’s fortunes around quickly.
2) Don Coryell put up a 127–24–3 record in 12 years as San Diego State’s coach, and a 114–89–1 record in 14 years at the NFL level. His offenses were some awesome pass-happy displays. To give an idea if you werent familiar with his offenses, Drew Brews finally broke a long standing record previously held by Dan Fouts for highest average passing yards per game. We all know how much Brees throws it around in games…
3) LaVell Edwards is a guy who never gets the recognition he deserves. He amassed a 257–101–3 record with 1 national championship & 19 conference championships in 29 seasons as BYU’s head coach. His list of QBs reads like a who’s who list: Robbie Bosco, Jim McMahon, Steve Sarkisian, Ty Detmer, and Steve Young among others. UT tried to hire him for the ’85 season. Thank goodness he turned them down!
I remember Dan Fouts and “Air Coryell”. I can’t remember the WR’s name though. The little guy. What a fun offense to watch.
Charlie Joiner. JJ Jefferson. Kellen Winslow at TE.
Thanx! You’re right. Those guys were great. I’m thinking of the white kid though. I remember him because I thought he was a surfer too.
Lance Alworth is who I think of when I think of short, white Charger WRs, but he left San Diego after 1970 and retired before Coryell became SD’s coach.
Oh! Duh! I didn’t know that. Thanx for updating me.

I am really liking McGinnis. He seems to know all about the LB heritage.
I with you, he has seemed “all in” with OU since he committed.
He has worked hard through some difficult times to get here, I am pulling for him to become a legendary Sooner.
Good morning, EasTex. I agree. He has been all in. He will be a great one, for sure.
And a good morning to you.
I think they were originally planning to play him at mlb but he looks massive compared to deberry so I wonder if they’ll move him down to de when striker and bond leave after this year. When the updated rosters come out in a couple weeks I bet he’ll be north of 250, if not then he’s skipping leg day.
I’m basing that on this photo
I’m pumped about both of them no matter where they play or who’s the larger force! Two potentially really great gets for us.
I thought Deberry was the one putting on the weight?
He might be but it looks like McGinnis is too
Deberry was brought in to play the 7 tech and super k already mentioned don’t be surprise if McGinnis plays on the dl
Thanks, I don’t recall K saying that. If he keeps growing I guess DE wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility, even though we still have Lindley and his 267lbs. listed as a LB.
Lindley played a lot 2 years ago as a olb when we was running the 34. I like McGinnis and his measurable are off the chart but he will probably play the 7 tech as well, k said one of his sources like him better closer to the line of scrimmage. plus both these guys play dl in high school. If we was playing a straight up 34 both of them would be a lb
After Hulk committed there is video of him saying Kish wants him inside on rushing downs and outside on passing downs
I really like this kid honoring the tradition!
According to Rivals all the top DT are gone, OU has no top LBS…is it the case that we only have good coaches who are below average recruiters? Kish, Reynolds, MS etc…? What is going on?
Chris Daniels is an elite DT in my book. Besides, until they actually sign they are all in play.
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/recruiting/player-Chris-Daniels-151745
Was reading Texass rivals and some think they will go 9-3, I think I hurt my back laughing so hard
I can see them going 9-4 I’m not as down on texsa as most people. I think they will beat notre dame, tcu or osu. If I were to guess who their 4 loses would be I would say OU, Baylor, tcu and ksu. I would only flip osu and tcu because I’m not sure which one will under achieve more and I think osu might sleep on texsa too much.
My firm opinion is Texsa Sucks all the time and osu will underachieve more.
Didn’t Strong already concede the game with the hunchback leprechauns?
I’m not sure. I can’t say that I pay much attention to him but if he did I’m sure it’s just gamesmanship
I tried to find the quote, paraphrasing he said the Texsa season wouldn’t be defined by losing to the Fightin’Frenchies.
There QB play might be worse than OU and they lost alot on Def plus a suspect o line
I find it interesting that not one tweet or image has appeared about Whaley’s visit.
Yeah, I wonder what’s up with that? I don’t like it. Maybe something shows up today.
I neither like nor dislike it, just find it interesting.
An image with him wearing a Sooner jersey standing in the trophy room would seem routine.
He’s so fast, they can’t get a picture of him.
I watched his hudl video again the other day. He is clearly talented. Still, I am more interested in getting Hogan with or without Whaley. I think their speed is about the same. Hogan seems more powerful, Whaley seems more elusive.
I’ve watched both and I agree with you. What I like about Whaley is his quick cuts. Interesting on Whaley’s Hudl, not many receptions.
True, we don’t have much video evidence that Whaley is as complete as Hogan.
For those who may not be familiar with the home town stud Hogan and his game, here is his hudl. Powerful, fast runner with great hands.

Wish TFB would give my local guy some exposure…had 14 yards a carry last year and prob led the state in KO in 5A http://www.hudl.com/athlete/1709751/highlights/213883378/v2
What are his dimensions? He reminds me of a kid from my home town.

Chavis is a little thicker therefore powerful…Walker is a prob a little more shifty (if at all) but very similar game really
I think Oklahoma has a great class of running backs this year. Maybe none with top 100 or top 300 talent but a lot of solid guys who can contribute in p5 conferences.
definitely man…cant wait for some friday nite lights
I don’t think I’ll get to watch much but I bet if OU took 20 of the top 30 or so in state players this year, they would end up being one of the better classes stoops has had. I doubt he takes more than 7 which isn’t bad but you don’t see Georgia or lsu taking only 7 kids from their back yards
I don’t write much on here but you can’t be serious about this comment. since when in the history of Oklahoma are there 20-30 kids worthy of playing at OU? you can’t compare Oklahoma to Georgia or LSU, those states are on a different level in terms of producing top tier talent. OU taking 7-9 or so kids is about right, and that’s in a great year. don’t mean to attack or anything, i just don’t get this mentality that if OU takes a bunch of Oklahoma kids it will solve their problem. there is a reason the coaches have looked elsewhere than Oklahoma, the talent just isn’t here. i will concede that prior coaching staff’s got lazy about recruiting the state hard but it’s not the fix to the programs problems…. at the end of the day it’s JMHO i suppose.
Good post #5. I think the upshot is OU has at times undervalued OK kids, which creates some frustration with the fan base when these kids do well elsewhere. Agree GA and LA produce more top kids and that were OU to sign 20 kids most years, they’d be Tulsa. Do still think OU continues to look elsewhere when the answer is right in their backyard. K has written about this lately and think most agree. OK has 4-5 OL guys that are P5 worthy along with RBs like Hogan and Lewis out of Lone Grove. There are a couple of DBs, Stoner and Mayberry. I like OU isn’t afraid to go after the top kids in the nation but when it becomes obvious that some of those kids aren’t coming to OU, there are some kids with great upside just down the highway.
Out of curiosity, how many kids in the last 10 years have left the state and made all conference or better at another school? This isn’t a point of argument, I’m actually just curious because I don’t know. Right now I think TCU has a DT that went to Millwood or something but some of those kids have never liked OU, not sure if it’s their coaches or what. Also the kid from KSU that got drafted by Seattle, can’t think of the name but he was always going to KSU cuz of his family history. Can’t think of others but please chime in anyone. I am not an expert in this arena.
To my point above. I think the better question is how many of our all conference and all Americans were from Oklahoma hs. A poster gave the stats a few weeks back and I think there were as many from OK as there were from anywhere else, Texas may have been the only exception. Which again goes to my point above. We need a roster built of about 75% or more from OK and TX and the rest should be top tier talent from outside such as VA or CA or LA. I don’t see the point in taking a prospect from say Tennessee when we have an equally talented guy here in OK.
And a kid doesn’t have to make all-conference in order to contribute and be a good player. Most of the in-state kids end up at Stillwater if OU doesn’t take them. Guys like Akim, Brailford and Kolar. Pierson at tcu comes to mind but they also have a kid that starts on the OL from OKC. And there really aren’t that many each year but it adds up.
As far as the 20 kids comment I’m just referring to this current class. This is a loaded class if we’re taking a guard no one had really heard of before even offering the top OL talent in the state. I’m not sure what the ratio was of scholarship players from OK on that 2000 team compared to each of the last 15 years. My guess is the other years where the ratio was equal or better would have been the 03, 04 and 08 seasons which would have been the other national title appearances. I don’t know the stats someone else may but I know many fans subscribe to the same theory that the kids in state and north Texas are key to the success of this program. That’s where we feel the heart of this team comes from is the kids who were born into Crimson.
Thanks for the video! He follows his blocking, patient. Almost innate sense of tacklers getting close behind him and changing his angle to the End zone. 1st film I’ve watched of him. Strong yet elusive, doesn’t quit, good hands, finds an open space to receive. Plus he’s an Oklahoma kid, What’s not to like?
I love this young man’s game and he’s home grown.
Were it up to me he would be at the top of the board for RB.
To be fair, he also visited Arkansas just before and there have been no photos or tweets from that. He at least retweeted some OU coaches and players.
That is also interesting.
Could be he is just a conscientious and private person.
Do we have an exact day of camp beginning?

I’m optimistic with this group this year lots of upperclassmen, plus this might be one of the best incoming freshman group we seen in quite sometime with the addition everybody in one room this year. hopefully the “wolves” bring it.

I was out of town yesterday and just got back to the civilized word (Dad, which is 75, says he didn’t need the internet for the first 75 years of his life, why does he need it now? LOL). Sorry I missed Rufus yesterday. The kid was spectacular. I am now working on today’s guys.

G-Day minus 41
Couple of AA’s in here. Been a while since this number has been truly great, as far as I can remember anyway.
AA Buck McPhail
Have to add this photo. Love the names to go along with the photo.
Who else remembers when the Sunday DOK looked like this? LoL Would pour over these sequenced photos examining the blocks for hours.
AA Max Boydson
You came up with some good names I didn’t have, Mike Coats/Richard Dillon/Gary Gibbs
Mike Coats 90-93.

Excellent video. Coats was a game changer.
He packed a serious punch.
That was my guy Tremayne #46 working beside him in some of the clips.
How about a return to home field dominance?

A lot of crazy good memories from those games. That 2000 Nebraska game and 2008 TT game were the rowdiest I’ve every seen OU fans in Norman. I was at both of those. Wasn’t at the Perkins 3 punt return TD game, but remember it well. Was at both the Miami and Bama games.
The thing I noticed most about those OU teams? Swagger. Not the Miami thug swagger, but a quiet, controlled confidence. That’s been missing in recent seasons. Hopefully the new coaches/players can help bring that back.
I was sitting in the upperdeck front row for the Perkins record setting. What an awesome display of skills. This was a great collage of historical moments. Thanks for sharing.
