Open Post | Monday, Jun. 1 (UPDATE 6:30 pm)

– Chris Daniels: If you missed it in this past weekend’s Open Post, the Sooners hosted 2016 Chris Daniels (6’3″ 301 – Euless, TX) and his family for an unofficial visit. I spoke with Chris’ father after the visit and it sounds like things could not have gone much better. You may recall, this is a return trip for Daniels as he has visited Norman once before. Father and son saw what they needed to see when they visited back in February for one of OU’s Junior Days. Mr. Daniels told me, however, this trip was more of a visit for Mom, because she wanted to see why Chris and his dad were so impressed with the Sooners.

I asked what the family thought about the visit and Mr. Daniels raved about the trip saying, “OU is OU. Bob Stoops, the assistants & countless bowls. They are also so organized in every area you can question. It’s honestly the best part of them. Worth the second look.” In my phone discussion with Mr. Daniels, I absolutely got the sense the Sooners are a serious contender for his son.

Chris named a top 10 a few weeks ago and Mr. Daniels tells us they will continue to cut it down. We have every reason to believe OU will be among Daniels’ list of top schools moving forward. – (Brandon)

– Matthew Gutwald: An offensive lineman to keep an eye on out in California is 2016 OG Matthew Gutwald (6’4″ 270 – Dublin, CA), who has recently been in touch with the OU staff. And while he hasn’t picked up an offer from the Sooners just yet, he has recently picked up offers from Oregon, Oregon State, Arizona, Washington State and others. Cut on his film and it’s easy to see why.

Gutwald is expecting to speak with the Sooners sometime this week and is particularly excited about it. Why? Because apparently Gutwald spent some considerable time (11 years) living in the state before moving out west. In fact, he attended Heritage Hall prior to his move.

JY took a quick look at Gutwald’s film last night and had the following thoughts: “Kid is a Power Five (conference) player. Guard, for sure. Has great pad level and will finish. Locates linebackers well. Needs to work on using his hands and striking the defender off the snap. Tends to hit people with his chest and allows defenders get in on him, but that’s something he can learn. He’s a keeper!” – (Super K & JY)

– Quinn Mittermeier: Another offensive lineman to keep an eye on is JUCO OT, Quinn Mittermeier (6’6″ 300) out of Butler CC in Kansas. Quinn tells me that he will be eligible to report for fall camp this summer and that the Sooners have been in touch, although no offer has been extended just yet. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (6:30 pm): Sooners miss out on 2016 WR Tren’Davian Dickson.

Who is the breakout this year? Anyone hazard a guess? For me it’s MIxon…

  • #1¢WW2 says:

    1a. Justice Hanson
    1b. Tito Windham

But seriously I think PJ Mbanasorous Rex could get some early time at the nickel

  • Cole says:

How in on Eric Monroe are the Sooners since they’re in his top 10? Realisticly.

  • KJ1123 says:

I like that Gutwald kid. Reminds me of a younger Dru Samia. Which coincidentally Gutwald started following on Twitter.

  • SoonerFan16 says:

Sooners hosting an official visitor today, any idea who it is?

  • Randy says:

For fun.. But I noticed East Carolina and other “Air Raid” offenses using the Pistol..
    PISTOL

    OT – St. John
    G – Danley
    C – Darlington
    G – Kasitati
    OT – Farniok
    QB – Mayfield
    RB – Perine or Flowers
    RB – Mixon
    WR – Andrews
    WR – Meier
    WR – Mead

    • Cam says:

Is that St John at left tackle and Farniok at right tackle? If so, I agree.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I hope D Farniok has improved his feet. Spring game didn’t show much to me. Could be wrong, but all I have is the eye-test.

      • Randy says:

Won’t have to block long in this offense..

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Okay. But remember BS likes to be “multiple.” I need an offense like 08′ 2 1000 yard rushers or one 1500 and a 4000 yard passer. Right?

          • Randy says:

Odds are we won’t have 2 1000yd rushers, but Mixon (I assume that is who the other one would be) might have 500 rec and 500 rushing. Still only one football. And if the defense still can’t get off the field it won’t matter. I would be ok with (meaning we win A LOT Of GAMES) 4000yd passer, 2 1000yd WR/TEs, 1000yd back and Mixon with the 500 and 500.

          • Randy says:

Also, if Farniok can’t do it, someone else will.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

WR: Shepard, Dede, Andrews/Quick, or in slot Mixon, RB Perine. Now that’s a dangerous offense.

      • Randy says:

That would be a every down line up.. I was thinking even maybe Knight at QB with the WR/TE size, Perine and Mixon.

    • Doobie74OU says:

This would be extremely hard to match up against on the goal line. A lot of height speed and power.

      • Randy says:

Yep, and maybe Knight at QB. Maybe ? I dont want not being able to get in the EZ from the 3 yard line a problem.. This offense will move the ball between the 20’s just have to finish it with TDs.

  • Zack says:

So which incoming freshman didn’t make it to campus yet?

  • jmac says:

What a nice offensive line that Matthew Gutwald plays on.

    • Cam says:

Very nice article, but it makes you wonder if Bob is only staying around for his kids. It’ll be interesting to see once they’re off to college if he immediately jumps somewhere else or if he sticks around. Either way, I hope he can win another NC before he’s gone.

      • BleedCrimson says:

I get the feeling that Bob is still hungry and torqued about last year and wants to get it turned around. I am hoping that the media is feeding the coal, and now is the time to light the fire.

  • Boom says:

TFB, how would you rate DT Daniels to some of the Arkansas players you have mentioned.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Here’s the question…with not having a ton of ships next year, would you rather have Lampkin this year or Chris Daniels next year if you could only have 1?

    • Cam says:

Unless i’m mistaken Lampkin will have no effect on the 2016 class, because his scholarship will count towards 2015.

      • j l says:

If UT makes him a partial qualifier, lamkpin will be held up by his NLI and wont play till 2016.

        • Bob Edwards says:

Partial qualifier is an NCAA designation. UT doesn’t get to decide that. http://sports.findlaw.com/student_athlete/elig_summ/

          • j l says:

He has the grades and the test scores, but he lacks a foreign language that not all schools require.
I can’t find what status that would put him in according to your link.

Word on ut boards is he will be partial qualifier

          • Bob Edwards says:

Well the link tells what a Partial Qualifier is. What the UT boards say is wrong at least if the situation is as described. Now UT could admit him on probation or some such thing. Some schools have that option.

According to what has been said, he if fully qualified according to the NCAA. It is UT that says he can’t be admitted because of the foreign language class. This happens occasionally where a guy is qualified according to the NCAA but not according to the school. But if the school does not admit him then his NLI becomes null and void. and he can go where he wants as if the NLI was never signed.

Normally the kid would just take a class during the summer and be admitted, but Lampkin does not seem to want to do that so in order for Texas to keep him they have to admit him without the language credit. The question becomes if they are willing to bend the rules given that the he probably transfers anyway.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Of course given that he is going to Oklahoma they may just decide to screw him anyway they can.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah. True like Taco Tech with Baker.

          • j l says:

So it’s kind of up to the ut admissions office as to how they handle him. That’s why I originally thought it was ut that would make him a partial qualifier, but I appreciate you explaining the difference.

          • Bob Edwards says:

That’s how I understand it given what I have been able to find and what info is publicly available. Of course I am just a guy on a message board. A lot of this assumes what has been said is actually true.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Bob, you know you’re not just a guy on the message board.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I may have some insight but its not like I am lawyer or and administrator that does this for a living. I am just a guy who knows how to use a search engine and plug pieces together. The thing is with the NCAA there are the written rules and then how they enforce them. The enforced rules are a lot more about politics than they are the written rules.

          • Daddy R says:

I say no way they bend the rules for one kid…

          • Doobie74OU says:

I wonder if Lampkin has had trouble learning a foreign language (ie Spanish). In his email he seemed concerned if he didn’t pass the class he would have to go to a Juco. Don’t know why you would be worried if it wasn’t something he already had difficulty with. We know if there is a way Texas can screw things up they will. I hope the best for him and hope it gets settled soon so he can move forward.

        • Sooner 76 says:

I thought they eliminated the partial Q several years ago.

          • j l says:

From what I could find, they merely regulate partials, didn’t remove them. UT only allows 2 per year, 2 male and 2 female.

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Cam if we have him on ship this year then that would make one less for next year because there’s a max.

        • Cam says:

With the scholarships that have opened up due to transfers I think we already have more open spots with Lampkin than we did 3 months ago without him.

          • Lane Gilstrap says:

This is true. My ? Was if you could only take on which one would it be?

          • hOUligan says:

I’ll defer as there is no way of knowing who’s the best or who will develop. Think getting Daniels would do more to build momentum for this recruiting cycle, which we sorely need. Also, my gut just says…Daniels ’cause if he comes, it’s because OU was 1st in his heart…but in the end, the best player.

      • Sooner 76 says:

In truth, my friend, it’s almost always about the 85 limit, rather than the yearly 25 limit.

I’d love to have both of them.

    • Stephen says:

Daniels for two reasons. First, from the very short bit of film he’s making tackles with his body and Lampkin was making a lot of arm tackles which don’t translate well in our defense. Second, I just want to get the 2016 class going.

  • lovethemsooners says:

Any word on Dalton Wood? Is he gonna make it in on time?

    • Ed Cotter says:

Where did this come from? Saw something on the other post that he may not come to OU, but instead work for his dad? What happened?

  • Stephen says:

Found this interesting statistic while browsing LandThieves.

Correction: Most #Rivals100 Commits By Conference

    #SEC – 20
    #ACC – 10
    #Pac12 – 10
    #B1G – 9
    #Big12 – 2

    • SoonerinLondon says:

      We should have headed West.

      • Sooner 76 says:

There was another discussion the other day about possible conference move by OU several years ago. Both of these discussions reinforce why this is a GREAT place for discussion: 1. Lots of different opinions; and 2. Respectful discussion w/o personal attacks on other posters or on Joe C. and President Boren.

I agree that we should have moved conferences. I would prefer a reunion with Nebraska. I just went to too many great games against them in the 60s and 70s. Great opponent, great fans. Don’t hate them, just love the great rivalry.

      • ComancheJoe says:

I totally agree. A move to the PAC would have been a huge boost to our recruiting. PAC16 TV deal with Fox would have been awesome. Nearly every OU football game would’ve been televised (between Fox, Fox1, Fox West and Fox Central). A couple of games on the west coast every year would help us pull in some of those Pacific Islanders that we’ve been targeting and might keep the California kids on roster from getting so homesick.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

My thinking on moving West was similar to yours and pretty simple:

          1. Great money in the conference.
          2. Great to get us deeper into the Cali recruiting pipeline.
          3. Great commissioner with a vision.
          4. Great chance to win CCGs…I truly believe that we could have as much success winning the PAC X as we had winning the Big 12…about 50% of the time. In the SEC, I simply can’t see anything close to 50%

      • John Garner says:

East > SEC. Forget aTm. Look at how much success Mizzou is having.

    • pag says:

Wondering some times how much different would have been the state of the program if we were part of the SEC

      • Stephen says:

No guarantee we wouldn’t better off where we are now (still believe we have a shot at the Big 12 this year), but the Big 12 is the most unappealing conference right now from the strength of the conference (TT, Kansas, ISU), media exposure, and the lack of CCG. All those things weigh-in when our teams are recruiting or other conference are recruiting against us.

        • pag says:

of course there is no guarantee, but at least in terms of recruiting, i believe it would have made a huge difference. You see a program like A&M landing the top recruits in Texas basically just by being in the SEC, since that’s probably the most significant thing they’ve done…

          • Stephen says:

Well the perception to them is every game is a big game in the SEC. That along with being nationally or regionally televised on basic cable helps with exposure to recruits. Unfortunately, a lot of games for us are in Fox Sports One which is premium I believe (I didn’t have it at school) so I had to resort to streaming it online (not the best option when trying to watch the game with friends).

        • Boom says:

I’m with you on most stuff but other conferences have their dud football teams too. However, Kansas & ISU are NCAA teams in Basketball which get a lot of exposure. Big 12 is more exposed due to the lack of total teams. Losing Nebraska hurt our image even though they haven’t done anything since mid to late 90’s.
I will bet that there are a lot of coaches (SEC) who don’t want to play football teams in the Big 12 on a weekly basis.

          • Stephen says:

I was just talking strictly footballs, but you make a great point that the Big 12 has gained substantial power in college basketball. Does suck for ISU losing Hoiberg, he is a celebrity up there.
And there are some really tough Big 12 teams right now (about 4 or 5 that could compete with any team in any conference) but since the conference is smaller, our dud football teams get noticed more if that makes sense.

          • Boom says:

agree. We get served Beer and SEC gets Champagne.

          • Stephen says:

Beer isn’t the worst thing we could get (-:

          • Boom says:

I get it, we get the 1 star hotel and they get the 5. how’s that. : )

          • Stephen says:

We’ll just say ours is going under a little renovation (-:

      • Fear The Magic says:

Or even if we were the big 12 before all the defections.

        • hOUligan says:

When you go back and look at all that’s transpired since around the time the whorns climbed into bed with espin…we lose the Huskers, Tigers and aTm…they start their network and it’s been a travesty ever since. They wrecked what was once arguably the top conference or #2 at worst.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

      It’s freakin early.

      • Paul Warfield says:

It is much much more than that!!!!!!

By breaking up Texas and opening it up to the SEC with home games in College Station the Big 12 fractured their biggest talent producing state in half. A few kids here and there have always gone into the SEC, but when the Big 12 controlled Texas they controlled the local sports stations coverage, the newspaper coverage and by doing so somewhat controlled the message the local recruits were hearing daily. Now they don’t!

Just as important…states like Kansas, Iowa, West Virginia and to an extent Oklahoma don’t produce the amount of talent so many other states do.

Though I do agree with this sites assertion that Oklahoma high school recruits are highly undervalued…and both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State are doing a below average job of evaluating and recruiting their own state.

Hey bro, Stephen isn’t a troll, he’s one of the good guys. He’s not doing this to shove our face in it, just the landscape at the moment. We all know if you commit to Bama, you are automatically a 5 star.

Unreal that OU is slow playing this kid. Watch Bama offer this week during his visit.

        • John Garner says:

I agree. It’s just frustrating. Don’t understand what they’re waiting to see that other schools haven’t already confirmed: the kid can ball. Thanx for the follow-up.

          • No problem. I fully expect Kansas to offer on his unofficial Wednesday. He is taking unofficial today to Ostate. They offered last week.

Okay, every report is we miss out on so and so…maybe the sky is falling. He puts okie lite in ahead of us? What is going on here? I am officially worried, even though on Saturday, I responded that it’s early. Can I get some answers from TFB?

    • ccmosaic says:

I am not worried about where OU is, this is where OU always is at this time. What worries me is where Baylor and TCU are. OU used to be the second Texas school. Us loosing out on a few kids does not worry me. Heck if TFB posted every time a kid said no to Texas, or even Alabama we would be excited that they too will have a loosing season. We have a lot of offers out there and will only take 25 at the most now. We are going to miss on a lot.

    • Stephen says:

Not worried that the sky is falling (still a lot of good guys out there), but definitely concerned. I just hope the people in charge realize that they may need to adjust their strategies and re-evaluate the brand awareness.

    • John Garner says:

Just win. It takes care of a lot of problems.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Last year the top nine (I couldn’t get the data for number ten) teams in Rivals ranking averaged one commit for every 7.6 offers. That means they batted .132. If you were a Major league baseball player that would get you sent to the minors unless you were a pitcher. Oklahoma actually did better that average at .151. The fact is that we are going to lose most of the kids we offer and that is no different than anyone else.

If we get the hit rate we had last year we will get a total of 21 commits, four more than the number of scholarships we have available according to Jordon’s chart. If we get the average hit rate of the top ten we will get 18 one more than the number available. Sounds like we are right where we need to be.

I hope the “when” is sooner than a summer camp. Also, hope OU makes a big deal out of it.
