– Team News | Frank Shannon: Finally, a bit of good news for the Sooners! I have been told that Frank Shannon is back working out with the team. Obviously most of the team is not back on campus just yet, but I have been told there are about 20-30 guys on campus working out and Shannon is one of them.
With Shannon back, along with a guy like Jordan Evans, Oklahoma should have a nice athletic group of linebackers with plenty of on-field experience. Really when you look at the guys across the board on the first team, there is enough talent to field a quality defense. – (Super K)
– Trayveon Williams: As most of you are aware, 2016 RB & OU offer Trayveon Williams is planning to announce his commitment tomorrow. He is deciding between Houston, Oklahoma, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M. Both myself and K have been told by sources to expect Williams to end up at TCU. – (Alex)
– Brendon Evers: A few weeks back we introduced you all to 2017 OK Preps defensive tackle, Brendon Evers out of Bixby. Evers is another in-state prospect to keep an eye on in what appears will be a loaded OK Preps crop of talent next year. I spoke with Evers yesterday, who told me Mike Stoops recently dropped by to see him. Coach Stoops apparently told the Bixby coaches that he was very impressed with what he saw out of Evers with respect to his size, feet & hips. Evers said he will camp at Oklahoma in hopes of earning an offer.
Evers also tells me that he is expecting Nebraska’s defensive coordinator to be in attendance at his spring game later today. – (Alex)
– Marcus Mays: Another in-state 2017 player we really like is defensive back, Marcus Mays (Tulsa, OK). He recently picked up his first offer from Tulane and has had more and more visitors by to see him every week. Oklahoma State already had Mays out for a visit and we’ve been told they could offer soon. Mays also let me know that Mike Stoops dropped by to see him this week and extended him a camp invite. However, Mays isn’t sure just yet whether or not the will camp in Norman. – (Alex)
– Luther Harris: Was told Bill Bedenbaugh stopped by Heritage Hall to see monster 2016 offensive lineman Luther Harris (6’6″ 361 – Oklahoma City, OK) earlier this week. – (Super K)
– Kyle Mayberry: A guy many of you will recall I mentioned in my “Why OK Preps Matter” post a couple weeks back is Tulsa Washington 2016 cornerback, Kyle Mayberry (VIDEO). He has started to pick up some recruiting steam lately, landing offers from both Arkansas State and Kansas. And then just last night he added an offer from Washington State.
Frankly, I would really love to see the Sooners get Mayberry, AJ Parker (Bartlesville), Dillon Stoner (Jenks) and Kiondre Thomas (Ft. Smith) to camp. I also think OU needs to take a really hard look at 2016 cornerback Coney Durr (VIDEO) out of Baton Rouge. Durr is a shorter corner, like Tre Jackson who OU recently offered, but he’s got a good solid build. He is explosive beyond measure, but I really just like his overall skill set and football savvy.
The thing that you have to love about Durr, Mayberry, Stoner, Thomas and Parker is all are already academically qualified. I’m never sure that particular aspect of a player’s attributes is high enough on a lot of scouting priority lists. – (Super K)
– Levi Draper: And like clockwork the 2017 OK Preps LB picks up another offer this week. Arizona State was the latest offering yesterday afternoon. Draper and his father will also be heading to Alabama this weekend for an unofficial visit. – (Brandon)

For whatever it’s worth, Parks (VIDEO) has been committed to Florida State for about a year already. Durden (VIDEO) currently also holds offers from Oregon State & Utah.

Could J Evans move to OLB with Shannon at ILB now, or would Alexander come off the field ?
In my opinion you’ve got to get your best athletes on the field. To me you play Shannon and J Evans. Dom loses his spot if I’m fielding the team.
I’d like to Bolton ( fr/rs ) show he is good enough to be on the field and grab a spot……there isn’t a position on the team that couldn’t stand an upgrade ( with the exception of RB ) …………
If anything, depth is a good thing, especially with the injuries that come up. Do you see us using Deberry?

Thinking the same, but I would love to see Striker and J Evans on the outside.. Evans could be 1st re pick there.. But that means no Bonds. It’s a good problem to have as long as they don’t create 2 problems with one spot like last year with J Wilson.
We have the talent on D to be good but not the coaching
You will never convince me that our collection of D coaches is incapable of fielding a quality defense. I just refuse to believe it. Those guys have done so in the past, and has a number of years experience in doing just that, fielding quality D units at the college level.
That’s like saying Nick Saban can’t coach D b/c he struggles against the spread. Just nonsense.
I agree. They didn’t look good last year, but I have a feeling if the fans and some of the players would have got their way and played more press coverage, we would have seen just how inexperienced (bad) they really could have been. It is amazing how good players make a coaching staff good again. Yes, I understand they are the ones recruiting but nobody hits on all their players. I think S. Parker can be a special player and I believe we will start seeing that this Fall. One final point, it’s hard to stop teams like Baylor. they are really good and our other loses, during the season, were on the quarterback and the kicker. Who the hell knows what happened in the bowl game.
I think what happened in the bowl game was that certain coaches were told they weren’t coming back and were not very focused. Even if they had not been told before the game they probably sensed it was coming. Some of the coaches were just going through the motions and that bled over onto a team that was already struggling. Given all the circumstances of that game I just doing give it much weight in evaluating the team.
Somebody always figures out how to stop them in the bowl games.

Confused. Half the defensive coaches are new to OU. I’m excited about all our positions but concerned about S. I believe we have depth, experience, & talent which will give Stoops a lot more options in defensive calls.
I’m not sure I’d agree that we have the talent on D based on last year, and we’re losing our best DT, Jordan Phillips. I agree, coaching is suspect based on last year’s performance and breaking in 2 new coaches
Phillips is one person, yes a beast but we got adequate replacements. Our whole D basically comes back with F. Shannon. The talent is there and it’s time for Mike to step up. No more excuses from them or us fans. They need to be held accountable.
Recouping a guy like Shannon can’t be overlooked. I expect a big improvement in the D this year and surely Mike knows he is running out of chances.
IMO we are one Roy Williams, Brodney Pool, Tony Jefferson away from being a defense that can win the Big 12 and get in the Playoff 4. Do we have that quy I am not sure thought/hoped it was Ahmad Thomas but just not sure now.
I think we are short all of them. However we might have what we need with the incoming recruits.
But is that enough this year.. I never expect a FR to come in a take a upper classmans spot.. It happens, but I don’t expect it.

This is my hope. Parker has the talent to be a flat-out stud and if everything clicks with him this year we may just have that RW, TJ type guy. Parker can run very well and isn’t afraid to get physical with guys. Coming out of Jenks you know he has been coached well for a long time now and seems to me to have that “it” that guys either have or they don’t. I am expecting big things from SP this year and I imagine Cooks and Co. are as well…
K, isn’t Durr the CB who is 5’10 but has a 40 or so vertical? If so, I remember watching his film and he is very explosive & not afraid to hit.
That’s him! And I believe that vert measurement was from his soph year. Really think he’s being overlooked. I prefer longer cornerbacks and so I’d like to see OU get more involved with Kiondre but if they’re going to look at a kid like Tre Jackson who is only 5’10 then you have to look at Durr in my opinion.

If OU has a secondary that can at least cover people and make offenses work for 4 quarters the defense should be pretty good. K, do you think Mbanasor sees real PT this year?
I think right now it’ll probably be JT and Sanchez holding those starting outside CB spots but if Mbanasor impresses this summer I think he definitely climbs the depth chart and is first or second off the bench. I know the staff is VERY high on him. Perception in football is half the battle.
Im hoping he plays a lot as a 3rd CB on passing downs later in the season. Maybe keep Ahmad or Byrd from covering a teams #3 WR
Mike Stoops is the problem. He schemes scared and afraid to be aggressive. He’s a lost coach and will be Bob’s downfall(and currently is)
I think mike is still a good coach. But last season he chose death by 1000 cuts instead of giving up big play after big play. I think he will do a better job this year.

If you had to chose between mbanasor and Stephens, who do you think will impress the coaches more and get on the field sooner? I think both have a chance to play this year but I think mbansor is more methodical where Stephens is more freakish. Therefore I think Stephens might get the first shot.
Mark Jackson is visiting A&M this weekend. If he doesn’t commit this weekend, OU has to feel pretty good about their chances, right?
He let us know a few weeks back that he’d be visiting TAMU before his commitment and OU after. Def sounded positive for OU but that was me reading into the fact that he had already decided to take his trip to OU after his commitment.

Perhaps I’m missing something, but what is the point of making a ‘commitment’ if you are already scheduling visits to other schools following the aforementioned ‘commitment’? (Unless, of course, you are visiting the school to which you are committing.)

That Ja’len Parks video, why did he switch numbers so much? Seen 3 or 4 different numbers on him.

I work with a guy that is related to a kid named Noah Dotson out of Alma High School ( currently a sophomore), says he is on hell of an athlete and several big time schools are getting by to see him. Any of you TFB seen or heard of him?
Glad to see Shannon is back and hope he has an All-American year. Having his leadership with so many young players around him will be invaluable.
I was scanning the roster last night and I don’t know if it has been mentioned, but Joseph Paul is now listed at 356lbs. after being 374/375 all last year. That is still big and hopefully it means his body is transforming into a grown man. He was crucial to Leonard Fournette having so much success and would love to see him pave the road at OU.
Also, with so many incoming freshmen on campus now I would love to see the looks on their faces when they met Coach Schmidt for the first time, especially Neville Gallimore.
From what I understand, Gallimore is well acquainted with the inside of a weight room.

There will be a lot of change in all aspects of his life so hoping he makes that transition and becomes a star.
Hope ole Gerald McCoy comes back and visits with the young man too.
Just the level of play and the size/speed of his teammates in practice will be an eye opener for him. I think he will rise to the challenge, though.
He has all the tools, very athletic and self-motivated.
I too think he will rise to the occasion. Some guys that have flamed out (Granger, McFarland) didn’t appear to have the “fire in the belly” and I don’t see that as an issue with this kid. Look, I may be wrong with my assessment of those guys but that was the vibe I got. NG seems like a pretty grounded young man and if he commits to being his best I believe we may have the next great one on our hands. Guys with his size and athleticism don’t come along all that often. I can’t wait to see what Schmitty does with this kid and here’s to a stellar career in C and C for Neville!

I think we’re 11-2 last year, with LJ. Maybe 12-1…not sure we beat Baylor, wouldn’t beat Clemson (but wouldn’t have played Clemson if we’d won 11-12 games.)

We reshaped the offense into the Chuck and Duck for him, and then left it because of the affect on the defense. Why do I feel like I’m reliving history here?
The idea that the O affected the D is crap. Sorry but this is not proven and cannot be proven. Pen State had a crap O last year and one of the best D at the same time. Just because we put up points fast does not hurt the D.
What we saw of the D during the Landry era was the beginning of horrible recruiting and lack of depth. The bad D had nothing to do with Landry and the fast paced O.
The people that don’t think LJ would have performed better than what we’ve had a QB since are just being stubborn.

I really respect Frank Shannon for coming back. With some of these other kids wanting to transfer out ( and yes I can understand why they do in some cases ), Shannon had every reason in the world not to return to OU but is sticking it out anyway.

Hard not to be pessimistic, feels like the program is in free fall. If you were on the outside looking in (as we basically are) how would you feel?
You’re basing this on what? The departure of a couple of players? One who’d fallen on the depth chart and one who’d barely cracked it? And of a QB who hadn’t even been on the field?
In an off season during which a number of coaching changes were made, that’s to be expected. You’d have preferred standing pat with everything as it was this time last year?
Bob’s doing exactly what good leaders, from Saban to Jack Welch, do. If it makes some people in the org uncomfortable then they need to go find a warm comfy place where they can feel more secure.
I’m basing it on the attrition rate of our players over the last 5 years and the reduction in wins and talent. It’s a trend downwards. The last game was one of the worst ever since Stoops arrived here in 99. We lost Monty and half the staff. If I saw this happening at Texas, what would be my impression? Not favorable.
I would assume the attrition rate over five years to be damn close to 100%. Graduation and all. We lost Monty, we didn’t lose the others. They were fired. To address a lack of acceptable performance. Bama didn’t win or even play for the Natty last season. So their ‘trend’ is down as well.
‘Free Fall’ is an insane overstatement.
Free fall is really only a comment on the last 12-14 months. A team/school that suspends two for violence against women, admits another, fires a good portion of the staff, loses their best position coach, under performs on the field, and loses players NOT to graduation nor the draft in the amount that we have is falling precipitously. If you really think the situation with Alabama (who I’m frankly tired of hearing about because it appears many Sooner fans have a hard on for them) is comparable then I don’t know what to say to you. Tell me something that has gone right in the last year. I’m waiting.

I’m just being pessimistic and I’m frustrated. I’m hopeful for the future (we obviously have the talent), but we’ve been through this down cycle for a long time, so it’s tough.
Thank you. And I apologize for the snarky tone. I suppose I try to levitate the whole program through relentless optimism. It is refreshing to get an actual response from someone on a chat board. Again, thank you for the reasonable approach.
I agree that we have talented players. Maybe some not as well suited for Josh’s offense or Mike’s defense as they might have been, but elite athletes nonetheless. And we don’t really know what Riley’s going to do with the toolkit he inherited.
My view is that we haven’t won ‘big games’ in a while, though we’ve had some. I suspect we’re closer than we might believe. I think the root cause is two fold: first, Bob got disengaged. Why? I don’t know. Maybe he just got burned out. Maybe he had family pressures to deal with. Maybe he thought, wrongly, that he needed to develop his assistants by making them self reliant. Second, and possibly related to the last, Bob hasn’t been as strong a leader as I think he should have been. He doesn’t need to ‘Saban’ everything, but he does need to set a course and make sure that’s where we’re going.
And I could go on. But I won’t. We’ll see if Bob gets it straightened out. I’m optimistic, but you never know.
Free fall? One friggin 8 win season and now the program is in free fall? I am not sure if that’s the wording you truly meant but if it is I have to harshly rebut your statement. Stoops just brought in a strong recruiting class (again) and inserted some new, young blood into the coaching staff. He didn’t hire bums rather he brought in some of the more highly thought of coaches in the industry. I understand the high expectations that come with having OU on your uni’s but come on man. We have a offense that is going to be flat out scary this year. How many teams can boast two guys like Perine and Mixon in the backfield not to mention the burner Ross and the incoming freshman Anderson who had offers from everyone from Auburn to LSU. We have an AA type receiver in Shep and a plethora of youngsters that should thrive in this new Air Raid attack (Westbrook, Meed, Quick etc.). The TE position is going to be vastly improved especially if Mark Freaking Andrews is used in that capacity. The OLine should be salty as always and I have full confidence that once the dust settles we will have the proper QB taking snaps and directing this unit to a gaudy PPG average and many-a-win.
The D is where I have a few concerns but the talent is certainly there for a marked improvement to be made. Coach Cooks is going to change some things up in the back end and we have many a playmaker in our secondary to start ball hawking much more than previous years. The LB core should be good this season and with Shannon hopefully coming back I think it could actually end up being a strength of ours. The DL is the position group I am most excited about. Tapper had a bit of a down season last year and I expect him to play with is hair on fire! Romar is the kind of glue guy every team needs and Wade is going to show his worth this season IMO. DJ Ward is a guy that we have all been waiting for and he appears to be healthy now and hopefully ready to make an impact. Guys like Walker and Orso should also be improved and let us not forget Neville Gallimore who I believe will force the staff to get him on the field Sooner rather than later.
The cupboard is in no way bare my friend. I am not calling my shot and saying a National Title is in the offing but to deem the state of the program as “free fall” is way, way off base in my opinion. Maybe I am a homer but I like to think of myself as a realist. I see a bunch of talented young men being lead by some wonderful coaches (some new) with the same goal of championships on their mind. If what I am looking at is “free fall” then I suppose I am ok with that.

Hate to break it to you but message boards are pretty much based on assumption and prediction. The only thing I can say for certain is that we will field a team this year and play the schedule as listed. Performance, be it individual or collective, is all a guessing game. Assuming that a group of awfully talented youngsters is going to do pretty well is not that large of a stretch to me but what do I know? Speaking of assumptions your reference to a Vegas line is just that, no? There are positive fans, negative fans and folks that stoke fires and breed negativity. I prefer to look at the bright side of things and give Coach Stoops the benefit of the doubt as he has earned that much in this fans eyes. As I tell my kid, “the glass is ever present and it’s just a matter of how full or empty you believe it to be.”

Jonny, good points. Being positive has always worked for me. Even if things end up poorly, I feel better most of the time. There’s something to be said about feeling good while bad things happen and opposed to feeling crappy and have crappy things happen.
The thing most negative people don’t get is that positive people are looking for and planning for their next victory.
Coming to these boards is tough because people have a difficult time accepting criticism even as just a point of debate. I don’t think I’m being unreasonable to say that the trend isn’t going in the right direction. That’s not a personal attack on anyone, but a review of performance and team management. Were the past 5 years better than the 5 before it? By any measure the answer is ‘no’. There are a lot of mitigating circumstances but that’s no aberration.
I will be ecstatic as long as we are always competitive, and show consistent competence in both play and play calling.
To me, that was a huge reason that made last year so infuriating. The sheer incompetence both on the field and particularly on the sideline made me embarrassed to be be a Sooner since the Blake Years.
I fully expect (perhaps merely hope) for that to be rectified next year.
We could very well have a superior team to last year (good lord I hope so) but have an equally bad or worse record due to the schedule next season.
Great things were predicted for the team last year in no small part due to the favorable schedule.
It’s been analysed to death so I won’t rehash. I only bring it up to present some grounded reasoning as to why fans a sound reason to have trepidation going into next year.
There’s always hope! After all, absolutely no one called for OU to be anything special in 2000…

I think Jordan Evans is a better LBer than Dom. JMO. Think that Frank will play SILBer and Jordan will stay at the WILBer position where he moved in the spring while Dom was out.
I think upside is higher with Evans but Alexander proved it his freshman year. Last year a bit of a step back but I think Shannon back makes him comfortable again.
have we figured out yet exactly what we are doing on defense. I hate playing 3 safeties when we don’t have 1 good one.

Brandon what is going on with OU not offering the instate guys currently? Last year was a good crop of talent in Oklahoma hs and this year and next look even better.
I think they may feel like they can offer in state kids later. They may just feel like others are better. Whatever it is, just have to trust the coaches. They are the professionals that get paid to make such decisions. Know better than me, that’s for sure.
That said, I’m pro okpreps kids. I think, given the right kids offered, they could amass a lethal squad with 2016, 17 and 18 classes being recruited harder. That’s just this amateurs opinion, though.

Hasn’t Mizzou produced the last two SEC DPOY’s? I think so which suggests to me that someone there knows talent when they see it and coaches it up. Understand too that Levi and his Dad are visiting Bama next week. It’ll be interesting to see if they offer. (Edit: Whoops! Just read what Brandon wrote about Levi’s Bama visit.)
How the heck have we not offered this kid yet? They going to lose out on a great backer prospect if they don’t get off their asses. We’ve seen how many kids in this state that are getting multiple offers from damn near everybody so it’s pretty obvious we have the talent here. I’m starting to wonder if the coaches are purposefully ignoring the instate guys or are arrogant and think that they can offer at anytime and they just automatically commit. I figured Waribarko would have taught them a lesson last year to not sleep on the instate kids.

Been reading these open posts for awhile w/o commenting but have to say, there’s something rather unseemly about accosting these 16 & 17 yr-olds over the phone or text or whatever trying to figure out which way they’re leaning college-wise. In real life, I don’t give 2-sh*ts about what some teenage kid has to say. I feel dirty for caring about this stuff at all.

Is Dom Alexander not considered a good linebacker?
Not by many. But I think he’s better than some think he is. People have to remember how poor the safety play was last year. I think that had an impact on Dom and Evans.
Dom was inserted as a freshman due to lack of depth. If we had depth, both Dom and Jordan would’ve RS. That would have helped them learn the game while getting stronger. I think Dom’s best years are the next two as he is now bigger and stronger with a lot of experience. Lot of options for MS with his LB’s.
He’s behind Jordan and both Tay and Curtis have caught up in the physical department due to his surgery this spring he wasn’t able to capitalize like they were…This spring set him back or at least got the younger guys more ready…the only thing his has over those two are experience..Imo both of the younger guys are more talented and can move better
