– Jordan Smallwood: As we reported yesterday, Jordan Smallwood has suffered a torn ACL. I was told the injury took place during practice last week. Certainly disappointing news to say the least as Smallwood was expected to see the field quite a bit this season. This type of setback is tough on any athlete who finally feels like it’s his or her time, we wish him a speedy recovery and hope to see him on the field soon! – (Super K)

– Additional Practice Notes: ICYMI, Brandon posted some practice notes from yesterday’s scrimmage here. I also managed to track down a few additional notes from my sources:

* Have been told the starting OTs right now are Kenyon Frison and Josiah St. John.

* Brandon already mentioned how good Joe Mixon has looked, but I will reiterate it because everyone I talked to said the same thing. “He’s the real deal” is something we continue to hear from just about everyone we speak with. Apparently he has been giving the LBs absolute fits. Was also told he (Mixon) can rival Samaje Perine in terms of overall work ethic. Apparently those two really push each other from a competitive standpoint.

* Was told both TEs, Carson Meier and Mark Andrews, had a solid scrimmage. And, as expected, the passing game is just more explosive in general. Imagining Meier and Andrews on the field in a double TE set with Mixon in the backfield and Dede Westbrook and Sterling Shepard out wide gets me excited, and I’m not normally particularly interested in the offensive side of the ball.

* Was also told that at a certain point the offense was so difficult to defend they had completed something like five straight 40-yard passes, followed immediately by a 30-yard run up the middle.

* It probably sounds like the offense torched the defense, but I was actually told that a lot of the production came against the second team defense. In fact, I one source told me the offense only scored once against the complete first team defense.

* In terms of defensive back alignments, I’m told the corners have the option to play a press or off technique. Which is new under Kerry Cooks as I’ve been told they weren’t given that kind of freedom last year.

* I’m told the coverages they’re working on are a mix of man and zone. Didn’t get a sense whether they were leaning one way or another, I’d guess there is plenty of disguise.

* Last year OU’s base defense was a Cover-1, and they played a lot of ‘3 shell.’ In practices so far, I’m told there is plenty of single high but also some split safety looks. Which sounds more like the 2013 OU defense.

* Many of you will recall after the first spring practice, I mentioned that Mike Stoops has mellowed quite a bit. From what we’ve been told that has continued to be the case. Hearing he has become much more of a teacher, which I thought was cool. I believe Mike’s intensity, when properly channeled, can be a great thing and it sounds like he’s finding the balance that better suits today’s player.

* Was told Jordan Thomas had a great scrimmage coming up with two interceptions. – (Super K)

– Dontavious Jackson: Spoke with Sooners 2016 LB offer Dontavious Jackson, who said he plans to make a return trip to Norman in the coming weeks. He has yet to finalize a specific date yet, so it may or may not be for the Red/White game. But Jackson said either the game or a practice would work well for him.

Jackson said he also has plans to visit Michigan, Florida State, Florida, Nebraska & LSU this spring. Sounds like quite the busy schedule for a guy who just continues to rack up scholarship offers. – (Brandon)

Chandler Garrett: The 2016 Mustang QB was in Norman on Sunday taking in OU’s scrimmage and continuing to get to know Lincoln Riley. As a matter of fact, the Sooners OC has plans to visit Garrett to see him throw during 7-on-7’s after spring football is over and the evaluation period officially begins. As things progress with OU and Chandler, I get the feeling the Sooners may be targeting a national guy and a regional/local guy to potentially fill two QB spots in this 2016 class. But we’ll have to wait and see how the numbers shake out on all of that.

Meanwhile, Garrett has plans to visit Texas Tech and K-State in the near future. In fact the Wildcats have been coming on strong and an offer could be coming soon. – (Brandon)

– Casey Thompson: The 2018 Southmoore QB was also in attendance for Sunday’s scrimmage. He really likes Coach Riley describing him as, “super cool.” Thompson said Riley is planning to stop by during the eval period to watch him throw in-person. Which could indicate the Sooners have already pinpointed one of their top in-state targets for the 2018 class. That is very different than how OU has worked in the past, although Thompson obviously has a history with the program through his father and OU alum, Charles. – (Brandon)

Rashard Lawrence: The 2016 Louisiana defensive tackle and OU offer was at the Rivals camp in Dallas this past weekend and impressed a number of people. Some of you will recall Lawrence took an unofficial visit to Oklahoma last year and was very high on the Sooners, due mostly to his relationship with Jerry Montgomery. However, Rivals’ Jason Howell reported that Lawrence has named a Top 4 of: Alabama, LSU, UCLA & Ole Miss.

A coaching friend of mine was at the camp and had an informal conversation with both Lawrence and his mother. And Lawrence was open and honest regarding his relationship with the now former OU assistant telling my friend if Montgomery was still on staff, he would have been a Sooner.

Lawrence did say that Diron Reynolds seems like a good guy, but said he just doesn’t have that same kind of a relationship with OU’s new d-line coach like he did with Montgomery. I’m not sure whether that can be remedied in the months to follow prior to NSD. But for a Louisiana player of Lawrence’s caliber to have already taken an unofficial visit and to at one point have clearly been that high on the Sooners, it would certainly be worth the time to at least try. – (Super K)

Chris Baccus and Maurice Chandler: We’ve mentioned both NEO defensive star prospects, linebacker Chris Baccus and CB Maurice Chandler in previous posts. Both are talented football players and great athletes who hail from the Sooner state. This morning Baccus let me know that the Sooners are expected to stop by and see him and Maurice next month. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (12:50 pm): It was mentioned above that St. John is running with the ones at left tackle and Frison at right. This is particularly surprising to me since normally you see the right tackle being a much heavier, hammering type of player. On the updated roster, Frison checked in at 289. I hate to sound old, but “back in my day” this was a good weight for a tackle. Now, however, it’s on the light side when you see behemoths like an Orlando Brown (6’8″ 355) and a guy I thought may get the nod at right tackle, Derek Farniok (6’9″ 345).

Given the fact Farniok has been through a couple of offseasons now with Bedenbaugh and a senior with some experience, St. John and Frison must have made some significant strides in the past year to get the nod from Coach B. Two years ago, Farniok got the start at LT against Ok. State and played well enough for us to get the win on a wild day in Stillwater. Even so, he has struggled a bit with pass protection.

Watching the offense Lincoln Riley ran at East Carolina — deep crossing routes and routes in general that require a decent amount of time — there will be a premium put on pass protection, especially off the edges. Ty Darlington and Nila Kasitati will be starters on the inside, while Jonathan Alvarez will provide immediate depth and most likely battle it out for the other starting guard spot with Jamal Danley. Alvarez was one of the true freshmen that somewhat surprisingly got some snaps last year and can play both guard spots as well as center.  It also wouldn’t surprise me to see Alex Dalton get some playing time this year to get him ready for 2016.

After that the water gets a little muddy, but ultimately it will come down to who competes the best and able to beat out the other guys.  There’s so much young talent coming up that this time next year, the competition will be even more wide open than it is now. That said it’s still spring ball and we know the coaches depth charts to motivate people, so the starters now may not be that way when we kick off in the fall.

Oh, and another dark horse to consider is Christian Daimler. Quietly he’s bulked up to 6’7″ and 306-pounds. He’s always been very smooth and athletic, so his physicality and aggressiveness will determine whether or not he’s able to get in there. He has a prototypical frame and been steadily putting on weight the last couple of years. – (JY)

    First! Great Open Post…

  • Jason Vos says:

Meier & Andrews inside in red-zone situations with Shepard and Westbrook outside makes me really really excited. That would be one hell of a red-zone lineup.

    • Super K says:

Indeed. They could get Meier and Andrews outside as well and let them use their length against CBs get guys like Shep and Sterling inside on safeties/LBs. Both those guys get in and out of their cuts so quick.

      • Jason Vos says:

Your mind is a devious place K

      • Drew says:

Hey K, with the “rumors” going around re: Ford, it got me thinking about Ross. You hear anything about him? Seems like the guy just disappeared, and I was hoping Riley would find a place for him.

        • Super K says:

I haven’t heard much about him but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I’m sure he’s in the rotation.

          • Drew says:

Thanks. I know our backfield is loaded, I just hope he sees the field outside special teams. I’d hate to waste speed like his.

      • Ryan says:

I will understand how Heupel wasted Bell and McNamara. Heck, even Hanna. All would have chance to put up big numbers in Riley’s offense.

      • Jason Vos says:

k hearing anything on Jeff mead? I think his upside and size are tremendous

    • Steven says:

Especially if Perine improves as well and can get the front 7’s attention like he did against Texas Tech.

  • Cole says:

This offense kind of seems like the national championship USC Trojans.

  • Stephen says:

Keith Ford rumors are flaring up again. Apparently, his locker has been cleared out.

  • KJ1123 says:

Mixon is definitely the real deal. Watched him for a couple years before he got to OU. Looking forward to watching him in the fall.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

I know these are HS guys, but they are elite players at the CA Nike camp…Joe Mixon leaves 2 guys running into each other. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0oBWLpQEaU

      • vargo05 says:

I remember watching that video last year and just being totally amazed. That’s some serious shake, especially for a good sized RB like Joe.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Elite agility, he’s going to take some 5 yard passes for 50 and a score this year

    • Indy_sooner says:

I saw another board people being negative about mixon being untouchable. This kid was the #1 APB that year. Even with Shepard. You just cannot cover them…period, I don’t care if you’re a division 1 DB, they will make you look silly. Can’t beat having them on our team to practice against.

  • Cole says:

Imagine how a defense has to make a game plan when Mixon and Perine is in the backfield at the same time. Mixon can be motioned in to the slot or outside. He attended camps in high school meant for only WR’s and CB’s and tore it up.

    • boomersooner says:

i’m no guru, but if we can use him in some similar type of way green bay uses cobb, everybody is going to be very happy

      • ouguy777 says:

I see your point, but I think Mixon is bigger. Cobb was a WR out of Kentucky I believe. Cobb to me is a lot like the kid from WVU that tore up OU a few years back.

        • boomersooner says:

yeah. kentucky. i see your point too. and i’ll take either. i just mean they line him up out wide, in the slot, in the backfield….you name it and find ways to get him some open space. i love the creativity they have with getting him open

  • Defend Colfax says:

Sounds like Kerry Cooks is building the confidence of his secondary. A little bit goes a long way with WR’s and DB’s. In 2015 everyone has physically gifted athletes at those positions. Not everyone can get those guys to play lights out unconscious football.

  • hOUligan says:

Good OP. A lot to chew on. First thought was the statement by BStoops last year during a practice about OU’s best back might be sitting up in his dorm room. He has to get it done on the field but don’t recall this kind of anticipation about a frosh back in a long time. Excited to see what Mixon can do in a wide-open O like this where he can be moved all over the field.

  • SoonerSouthoftheRed says:

I would love to start a season with a complete team on both sides of the ball. I hate losing guys every year during spring practice. I know it’s a sport and that’s the chance you take, just seems like OU has gotten hit with it every spring for a while now.

  • OU_Sooners says:

One will hope that Finebaum can keep his trap shut if/when OU goes to Rocky Top and takes care of business.

  • OU_Sooners says:

As far as stuff I’ve read- Mike Stoops talked about having a secondary scheme similar to Seattle, last year. That’s awesome, but you need to be able to play bump and run with enough speed. That system is so complex, it’s just better to run a simplified system to keep guys level-headed with their easy checkdowns.

  • hOUligan says:

Saw the tweet re: Lawrence on OS. Couple that with Rahshaun Smith to Clemson and Monty’s loss continues to sting. Monty was also in on Agim and Bledsoe. Reynolds has a lot of ground to make up. Know he is busy getting to know who he has in spring drills. Will see what he’s got during the eval period.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

      $$$

    • Super K says:

Heard Agim was a beast at the Rivals camp. My boy told me he is so quick for a big guy.

      • hOUligan says:

Another Arkie D guy I’m interested in is Cameron Murray. He had some great scores at the camp, too. Will see if he plays up to those his SR year.

      • Mr. Jones says:

Do you know if Reynolds has been in contact with Agim or Bledsoe?

    • Defend Colfax says:

I agree. Although my expectations aren’t sky high either, there are very few recruiters like Jerry Montgomery if any. Oklahoma doesn’t have near the celebrity as a lot of lesser programs. Clemson is always going to be an NFL factor that makes very little noise.

  • Rashad See says:

Keith Ford is no longer listed on the official OU football roster

  • Steve says:

@OU_CoachStoops confirms that running back Keith Ford has been indefinitely suspended for academic & team rules violations.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Keith Suspended for academic & team rules violations

  • kt-raida says:

Great writeup ! I haven’t been posting for awhile getting adjusted to Dallas but it seems you’ve guys have been busy!

  • blaster1371 says:

Good to hear MS is teaching again. Find it kind of hard to accept a guy can rework his ways in just one off season of reflection. Game days will tell us alot. I think the young DBs were so afraid to make mistakes they would not commit themesleves on a play or second guessed their keys to often.

  • Stephen Dale says:

ESPN has already discussed OU’s ” state of recruiting” and forecast probable lack of success….

    • Stephen says:

      Do you agree?

    • Brian says:

      Quit being so negative bro!

    • OceanDescender says:

ESPN gave up on Ohio State last season after they lost to VaTech.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Stephen, the question is what constitutes a successful recruiting season? This past season OU finished 15th. However, only 7 teams finished with an average star ranking higher than OU’s. Hence, ESPN is full of it. Since before the Clemson game they have been nothing but negative toward OU. Perhaps they are hiring?

      • John Garner says:

The more ESPN or the media in general talks us down, the more I think our players and coaches will rise to the challenge. I’m not worried. I’m motivated. We play our best ball when the world is set against us. Bring it on!

    • Slim Sooner says:

I’m sure you are thrilled with that report and in whole-hearted agreement. ESPN is hardly an unbiased source of news for OU fans. Oh, wait….never mind.

    • Boom says:

      Finebaum, is that you?

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

Is Frison winning the job a sign Brown isnt ready? Or maybe Frison is what they want to get back to, much smaller OL that can pass protect?

      • Jordan Esco says:

I don’t believe so as I understand it they’re playing on opposite sides of the line. I always just assumed Frison w/b a LT and Brown a RT, but evidently Bedenbaugh has flipped that.

  • Defend Colfax says:

I had a feeling Alvarez if he wasn’t pushing for time he’d have the coaches talking. Totally Coach B’s kinda guy.

  • boomersooner says:

can we take a vote on getting stephen dale outta here? his act is extremely tired and i feel his welcome is beyond worn out. if we get no ignore button, to me, this is the only way to go

    • cpearc00 says:

Agree. I’m all for open dialogue and hearing alternative opinions, but he’s nothing more than a troll who fails to foster intelligent discussions.

    • Dustin says:

How many windowless vans do you think he owns?

    • Sooner 76 says:

Fine by me. We also need to ban James Babcock. He comes on here every weekend when the board is not monitored and posts religious things.

Not appropriate for this board and very disrespectful to others who may or may not share his views.

      • boomersooner says:

i don’t mind him too much. as soon as he’s disagreed with tho, he does throw up some “is that where you wanna be when Jesus comes back, making fun of joe dirt?”

      • Jordan Esco says:

Who says the board isn’t monitored during the weekends? We’ve cut back posting stuff simply b/c the metrics don’t warrant doing so other than in specific circumstances, but we’re still checking in regularly.

But any time you have an issue, please feel free to us the site email and/or hit myself or K (on the TFB account) on Twitter and we’ll be happy to address whatever the issue.

      • BigJoeBrown says:

It doesn’t bother me as much as someone who get’s excited about and giddy about anything negitiave toward the Sooners.

      • rphokc says:

…several people post religion each weekend

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I think ignoring would be a better, less direct method. Don’t reward or reinforce behaviors you don’t want.

  • Mizuno44 says:

What about QB play in the scrimmage, i.e, who was delivering those 40 yard passes?

  • Mizuno44 says:

When is the last time we had a duo in the backfield that matched the potential we have now with Perine and Mixon?

  • Andy Sundborg says:

I saw Meier in high school. As a junior he lined up as a inline TE almost exclusively but did flex out some as a senior. Used to be a heck of a intimidating sight. Mead on one side him on the other.

    • Coach K says:

Carson split out as a junior too. I don’t know why they never threw him the ball except go routes which cracked us up.

      • Andy Sundborg says:

Yeah I never understood that. To me he was perfect for what we used to call the Y hot, which was a in line 8 yard seam lob over the Lbs head

  • KJ1123 says:

Farniok is big boy…but I hear he is not necessarily someone who truly loves the game. Just rumors though.

  • OUzaudioman says:

Awesome Awesome stuff…why would anyone pay for another site when you guys consistently put out amazing info? Thumbs up!

  • Paul Warfield says:

I said this in the roster updates, and will be here as well… 290 pounds is great, especially for a red shirt freshman.

Look around the NFL, and you don’t see offense of tackles weighing more than 320 pounds as a regularity. When you watch the draft notice that they will always come in somewhere around 310.

That is one reason, and the athletic ability they would gain, that I believe Derek and Brown both need to drop a good amount of the bad weight they carry

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Think you are right. In the 2013 Sugar bowl Bama’s left tackle was huge and a NFL prospect, but Striker killed him. We cannot have a speed rusher expose our tackles. Oregon runs the ball well with lighter tackles. We need to run also, but don’t need guys that can only run block.

      • james babcock says:

Agree back in the 1970’s we had lighter offensive lineman and we ran the wishbone with force and won national championships we don’t need 350 pound linemen to win.

    • Boom says:

The OLs in the NFL will continue to get bigger. I agree, 320 now is some of the larger ones but there are a lot more out there bigger than 320. Kids are getting bigger so there will be a lot of 310 – 320 but the near future, it will be more like 320 – 335

  • ToatsMcGoats says:

Great to hear from you, JY!

  • Cole says:

    Is there anything on Kendall?

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

K(or anybody else), Sorry for the ignorance but when you say the corners have the option to play press or off is that a decision each corner makes every play, only certain situations or is it only one corner when a particular coverage is called? I played a different sport growing up so I’m intrigued on how it all works. Does one corner’s technique affect the other corner?

  • rphokc says:

…….are the sooners interested in broken arrow ol rowdy frederick…….he made some noise at a weekend camp

    • Sooner Ray says:

I know he’s made a campus visit but I’m not sure what the interest level is at this point. I would hope we are showing a lot of interest in the locals that show us they want to be here.

    • Mike Reed says:

I work with Rowdy’s Aunt. She’s said several times that Rowdy bleeds crimson and cream. If OU were to offer he’d probably commit instantly. He wants to be a Sooner.

  • Jordan Maun says:

I ran into Christian Daimler on spring break in Destin. He was MASSIVE. I am a pretty big guy (6′ 2″ 230) and he made me feel pretty insignificant. Nice guy too, I talked to him for a couple of minutes.

  • rphokc says:

re viney, seen below……….what is his position on the staff now……….thought he ran out of time allowed to be at ou

  • Tulsa Terry says:

I really like Christian Daimler from Houston. His success could reopen the Houston pipeline cracked open by Rodney Anderson. He looked great in last years red white and has bulked up to complement his superior technique. I think he starts at left tackle by conference play.
