– Team News | Matt Dimon: I have been told OU defensive end and potential starter, Matt Dimon, is currently not with the team. At this point I do not know whether he will return or not, but based on what I have been told he is not participating in practice, team meetings, and/or any other team activities. I have yet to be able to ascertain the reason Dimon is not with the team, but I have been able to confirm his absence is not injury related.
With Courtney Garnett injured and now Dimon, at least for now, also not practicing, OU’s defensive line depth has certainly taken a bit of a hit. – (Super K)
– Jared Mayden: Was able to catch up with 2016 CB offer Jared Mayden of Sachse (TX). For those that don’t know, he will be announcing his commitment at The Opening in July. We caught up with him last night to talk about where everything stands currently. At this point he has visits set to Oregon on April 4, Alabama on April 10 & FSU in early June.
Now as far as Oklahoma goes, Mayden is still regularly keeping in touch with Kerry Cooks & Mike Stoops. He has also been in communication with head coach Bob Stoops. The OU legacy said he is considering another unofficial visit to Norman this spring, but nothing is set in stone at the moment.
We can tell you the Sooners are definitely in the mix right now along with Alabama, Florida St., Ohio St. & Oregon. A couple other schools he mentioned as possibilities were Michigan and UCLA. However, Mayden said he isn’t considering any of the Texas schools at this point.
Mayden again confirmed again the OU Jr. Day he attended last month, where he got to really talk with Cooks face-to-face, along with the Alabama offer is what ultimately led him to re-consider his recruitment after having previously released a Top 3. Obviously, that’s a good sign for the Sooners. At this point, Mayden said Ohio St is recruiting him the hardest but was clear in stating he does not have a top school right now.
Interestingly, Mayden says he is planning to take his official visits after he commits in July. The Sooners couldn’t ask for more than to be involved in this race and like we stated above, there is no question that’s exactly where they find themselves. – (Alex)
– Robert Mahone: Bill Bedenbaugh recently reached out to Prosper, Texas 2016 RB and let him know fellow OU assistant Jay Boulware has seen his film, was impressed, and wanted to get a look at him in-person. The 6’0” 195-pound prospect was invited up for the Sooners spring practice this Saturday (Mar. 28), and Mahone tells me he will be in attendance.
With regards to his game, I really Mahone’s size and speed combination. Good burst and gets to top speed in a hurry. Explosive, love his feet, kid can cut on a dime with some serious lateral movement. Can make defenders look silly in tight quarters and in the open field. Also plays CB, which he says is his main position. Definitely a player to keep your eye on moving forward. – (Alex)
– California Visitors: We caught up with 2017 WR Joseph Lewis (Los Angeles, CA), who already holds major offers from schools like USC, UCLA, Michigan & several others. Lewis tells us that he and a few other California kids will be in Norman this Friday.
Those ‘other Cali kids’ who will be joining him are: 2017 WR Taariq Johnson (Los Angeles, CA), Robert Lewis & 2018 WR, Jalen Hall (Los Angeles, CA). Lewis told us that Dennis Simmons is recruiting the trio — which certainly makes sense with the Washington State connection — that all three have actually met him in person before and already have a good relationship. – (Brandon)
– Desmon Smith: A 2016 corner prospect we’ve had our eye on for a little while now is Desmon Smith out of Odessa, TX. He is about the longest cornerback prospect you’ll find standing right around 6’3″ in his cleats. Smith has played offense most of his life, but switched over to cornerback this past season. And with his length, speed, and instincts was able to make the transition easily. So easily, in fact, he could end up being an excellent defensive prospect at the next level. Smith let me know last night Oklahoma is starting to show interest, and that he’s been communicating some with Kerry Cooks. – (Alex)
– Patrick McKaufman: A couple weeks ago we brought 2016 QB Patrick McKaufman out of Douglass High School to your attention. I had a chance to speak with McKaufman last night at which point he informed me of his plans to make a second trip Norman next week to take in an OU spring practice.
McKaufman is a huge kid officially measuring in, flat-footed, at 6’5″ 187-pounds recently at the Nike combine in Dallas. However, the fact that Douglass predominantly runs the ball hasn’t necessarily been the best thing for McKaufman’s recruiting. But he’s a monster athlete with a cannon of an arm and his private QB coach, former OU assistant Joe Dickinson, raves about his ability. – (Brandon)
– Rahshaun Smith: Many of you are familiar with stud 2016 OLB Rahshaun Smith due to OU’s interest/offer and Smith’s close relationship with Charles Tapper. In fact, at one point Smith was even considered to be a bit of an OU lean both because of Tapper, but also because of the relationship he’d built with now former Sooners assistant Montgomery. You may recall Smith visiting Norman last year for the Tennessee game.
Smith tweeted yesterday that he’s planning announce his commitment this Thursday. Not much good here to relay in the way of OU’s chances. Unfortunately, Montgomery leaving really hurt their chances. Expect Clemson, and another former OU assistant in Brent Venables, to pick up Smith’s commitment tomorrow. – (Super K)
– Austin Kendall: We mentioned it in yesterday’s Open Post, but just in case anyone missed it. OU will be hosting 2016 QB and former Tennessee commit Austin Kendall on an unofficial visit today and tomorrow.
While he does not currently hold an offer from the Sooners, we would be pretty surprised if he doesn’t leave with one. In fact, there has even been some talk of a commitment being a possibility. But that may be somewhat premature, however the earlier OU can land their QB commit in this 2016 class — especially after not taking a QB in 2015 — would only help them in having that ‘bell cow’ prospect with which to start building their class around. – (TFB)
– UPDATE (10:55 am): Demetric Warren is reporting, as expected, OU has now officially offered Austin Kendall.
– UPDATE (11:00 am): Just a quick aside regarding K’s report on Dimon above. “Not currently with the team” and ‘no longer with the program’ are two VERY different things. Kind of surprised that even needs to be clarified. But I suppose given the nature of the Internet and propensity of some to just take things and run with them, I felt somewhat compelled to just briefly address things. – (Jordan)
– UPDATE (12:06 pm): Kendall confirms the OU offer.

Re: Dimon…..great just great
fwiw, I don’t think it’s a loss they would be unable to overcome. But, that said, I’ve always felt he had a ton of potential, so I hope whatever this is gets resolved and he finds himself back w/ the team.
Perhaps this is why Isaac Ijalna moved to DE? Garnett should be back for Summer ball from what I’ve heard
Maybe re: Ijalana.
That seems early re: Garnett, but maybe he’s a quick healer.
I’m surprised by the news. I don’t want to speculate too much but Murdock mentioned on the radio (well via interview with darlington) that some members of the team did not agree with the direction the team was going with the demonstrations as opposed to practices. Hopefully it’s something else
Yeah, like you said that’s just not something I’m going to speculate on.
Matt Dimon leaving has absolutely nothing to do with the SAE debacle or anything you would be referring to regarding the matter. He has left (possibly – for the time-being) for personal reasons and this has been known well before the debacle went down.
I totally agree. I hope it gets resolved as well. I heard the rumor of Dimon leaving over a month ago. Hes a VERY solid backup if not a starter.
+1
ty
Heard from a source that he quit for some personal reasons, but is planning on rejoining the team
always liked the kid, hope it works out
Sure hope you are right..not just to get him back on the team..IMO this was going to be a breakout year for him if he stayed healthy…but just want the best for for him. Will send up an xtra prayer for guidance.
Who would take Dimon’s spot in the rotation?
Big Charles Walker
I think he’ll play mostly on the inside now based on what we’ve heard about them going back to more of a “four” (and I put that in quotes b/c of Striker being the 4th) man d-line. But I agree in that they could easily move Walker in btwn both spots.
Right now I’d probably say Orso and/or Ward. They could also easily spin Walker out there as well.
I think this puts more pressure on Romar and Wade to be able to hold down the middle so that Walker can move back outside. Think Gallimore is gonna get any reps or is he a redshirt candidate?
Hard to say not knowing much about Reynolds, but if I were a betting man I’d say Gallimore does not redshirt.
Man, it w/h/b so great if he (Gallimore) had been an early enrollee.
Thought Walker was already out there. Dimon is Tappers backup at DE
He was in the 3-4 but if they go back to more of a four man DL, as we’ve heard they will, I’d expect Walker to play more inside at DT.
He looked good inside in the Clemson game… if you can say anything looked good in that game.
Dimon is Walker’s backup at the 3 DT. Orso is Tapper’s backup at DE.
Doesn’t seem like Oklahoma has moved to a four man line in the way you are saying. It sounds like a 3-3-5 with Eric Striker, and whomever his backup at outside linebacker is, simply being aligned on the line of scrimmage. I doubt they put their hand in the dirt and would bet they never play an inside technique on a tight end or tackle.
I just hope if they are doing this that they get back to one gap attacking principles.
Well, I referred to a “four man” DL below I think in quotes for the very reason/s you reference. Although I think at times you’ll see them w/ four true DL on the field, but that’s also something they’ve done in the past and thus not necessarily new (as I suspect you’re well aware).
Would be interesting to see who they put on the field as their four defensive linemen…looking at the roster it’s not only thin and short on numbers but completely void of developed talent and playmakers.
I would say I don’t expect the Oklahoma defense to ever again have consistent success as long as they continue to flip flop schemes every 6 months…but man until they start recruiting and developing kids again I’m not sure even that would help. Though a clear scheme and recruiting kids for that exact scheme could go a long way to solving talent issues with proper fits.
Agree w/ everything you’ve said.
If I were to guess as to the four, I’d say right now w/ the current roster (and w/ the presumption Dimon will be back): Dimon-Wade/Walker-Romar-Tapper
boy we are kind of thin as 4 man front
Kind of, yeah. Will get better once the rest of the 2015 class shows up but even then those are true freshman so….
i’m guessing Mann will start out at the 5 tech. Orso is a BIG DE in a four man front. I’ve heard good thing about him but I do question his ability to get pressure as DE in four man front. I guess Ijalana will start out there
True but he along with new recruits have length. 6’6 can block a lot of slants and dump offs – JJ Watt. All the new DE’s are 6’5+ so there is a trend.
Whaley commit yet?
Nothing on Dimon’s Twitter to suggest there is an issue.. He posted a pic with some of the fellas just a couple days ago.. Hope he didn’t get in some kind of spring break trouble…

OK you know either your business sucks or youre a ginormous OU fan when you get more “Notificatiions Re: Comment on open post” emails than business emails.
just sayin.
Kendall commit yet?
Yes Kendall and Whaley both committed but shhh on that…I’m not supposed to say anything
Okie dokie
You wish but no
yeah, Kendall Thompson and Dom Whaley.
quick update added
I will make a mountain out of molehill if I want.
I hope all works out with Matt. I still remember how dominant he was at Katy in the state championship game
Do the coaches just really like Kendall, or is this a sign they don’t like their chances with Haskins or Guarantano?
Guarantano has been out of the picture for awhile now.
I assumed so, but I just hadn’t really heard or seen any news on him at all. If it was posted on here then I must have missed it.
He keeps repeating a group of 3.. Ohio st., Tennessee & Rutgers.
Meyer is great no doubt, but who is the last pro QB he’s sent to the league?
Tebow, Alex Smith.. Both 1st round picks, Smith was a no.1 overall….
Why does it matter when he has 3 nattys. Who cares about the pros. OU doesn’t play in the pros. OU plays for nattys and Meyer has 3. I don’t like it but have to live with it.
OU has been out of it w/ Guarantano for some time. And I couldn’t speak to their thoughts re: Haskins other than to remind he’s a kid w/ an insane offer list and no real true ties to OU. If I had to guess, as we stated in the post above I think they’d like to get their QB commit on board so they can start building around him/use him to start helping recruit others as QB are generally seen as “the face” of most classes.
Good point. Perine seemed to always be going after someone on twitter a couple of years ago. I wonder how impactful that would have been if people would have known how good he was going to be?
Mixon was another guy that was very active in recruiting on the part of OU. Not every kid has that type of personality, but given the nature of the QB position a lot of kids at that spot seem to have that.

Don’t remember this guy at all. How high was OU on this guy?
Not very
Looked him up, turns out he’s from Edmond. Gotcha.
Yeah, he wound up moving to Utah.
Jordan, who was committed to Louisville but reopened their recruiting?
Keaton Torre, former OK Preps QB
Gotcha, thanks!
no prob 🙂
I remember him being mentioned as a target last year, we in the running again on him?
He very much wanted an OU offer, but always seemed like the coaches had a higher priority on their board. Talented kid in his own right, though.
Ya he was a solid 4 star, not sure why he wouldnt at least be a target. Hope they get in on him.
Watch him be a Wes Welker. We don’t offer and the kid goes on to be an NFL stud.
Pretty sure this kid isn’t coming back to Oklahoma. There’s a reason he left.
According to a quick Internet search he left because his father got transferred. Not sure why that would mean he wouldn’t consider coming back.
There a much, much more to the story which is not necessary to re-dredge on here.
Look harder.
Good LAWD wouldn’t it be awesome to get a commit out of Tennessee after how many they have stolen from Oklahoma?
fwiw, he’s just a former Tennessee commit. Actually goes to school in North Carolina.
Gotcha and thanks. It’ll still feel like we’re kinda sticking it to the Volunteers.
Just so long as they do so up there this September
What’s the deal with Whaley and A&M? Why are all of the predictions saying he’s going there?
They’ve made him a priority & he’s from Beaumont.. Not too far from A&M.. I will actually be surprised if he commits there though.. As long as Gundy is involved, i think OU has a real shot..
No offense to Mr. Kendall.. But I’m not as impressed with his film as i have been with our other QB offers… I know he’s a 4* but i think some of our other offers are better.. Namely Woody Barrett..
Do you think we’ll offer Matt Farniok, Derek’s younger brother? He’s 6’6″ and 315 and has lots of offers already (Ariz St, Fl St, Stanford, to name a few)
his name hasn’t been mentioned as having receiving one of Oklahoma’s many offers to date…Unless his older brother sees the field regularly this fall, I’d think there would be no chance to get the kid brother……
Book it
Yeah, like OU MBB had no chance against KU in our regular season finale.
I know, some folks get upset with him but I get a kick out of his shtick. Love his recruiting analysis and predictions cause you know it’s coming. Farniok is a perfect example.
You never think we have a chance with any recruit and never expect us to win a game. You’re OU fan of the year. If you would visit a Texsa site and express your true feelings for OU, you’d be a freaking hero there.
Stanford – really? They know good OL. Hopefully Bill will take a look at Matt, if he hasn’t already.
None of these recent predictions on 247 for big time recruits from Texas have them going to OU. Flooded with UT and A&M though. It’s driving me crazy. Our tradition obviously doesn’t mean crap anymore. And Guarantano and Tennessee? Compare their QB production to OU the last 15 years. Not even close. He’s an idiot for not having us on top. Not to mention we signed 0 qbs last year.
An “idiot” for not having us on top? Perhaps he wants to stay close to home, as most are predicting he stays in NJ and goes to Rutgers. Not everybody in his world wants to be a Sooner. That certainly doesn’t make them all “idiots”.
he doesnt have the word idiot in his post nor is he talking about Guaratano
oh nvm I see he edited, my apologies
….you sure?

Agree. Sounds like he’s saying that Guarantano should be considering OU strongly because we didn’t sign a QB last year and ut hasn’t had OU’s history of great QBs.
I added an edit saying I seen he edited his original post, and an apology
Not sure what you are seeing. He referred to Guarantano as an idiot in his original post, and he hasn’t edited it out.
An idiot for having Tennessee on top and not strongly considering OU. I hope OU kicks their butt in Knoxville.
Tall order. The Vols are going to be particularly tough, especially at home. I’m hopeful but in no way should we underestimate Butch Jones. Those kids will be coached up..
Remember though, Sec teams don’t face spread attacks that often.
Good point. There is Auburn and aTm. Even still, it will be interesting. But if JH were still the OC, I’d be very worried.
And Mississippi State & Missouri, & the Vols themselves run a good deal of it themselves thanks to Jones bringing it from Cincy. There are a few non-spread holdouts here & there, but they’re getting harder & harder to find.
Gosh, I forgot about Mizzou. Duh!
Agree with Ryan if the kid is considering Tenn. No two ways about it.
In a slightly different vein…it’s tough to get kids to come to Norman…not much to attract kids other than “OU” if OU is winning. Whorns will always get tejas kids and right now, AM, TCU and Baylor are ‘hot tickets’ and rising. OU will always attract some top recruits out of tejas and elsewhere but until OU wins championships, again, OU will find it tough to get more than a few ‘big time recruits’. It’s amazing they did as well with this last class as they did. And I shudder when I think about ‘what if’ Monty had left in January.
pretty good read. one on one with ronda rousey

Indeed, read it earlier today
I hope Matt Dimon gets moved to DT, I think he’d be move effective there
I think he already has been moved the the 3 gap DT behind Walker.
Don’t mean to be the board police Sooner 76, but I think you mean the “3-tech” and not the gap. I’ve also seen where our DE’s play a 4 or 4i tech. I’ve been able to glean this from the breakdowns provided by the TFB guys.
You are correct. Thanks. I usually just say the 3-DT.
You’re very welcome. Anything to advance the cause.
Well this should accelerate Gallimore’s development.
If only Dalton Wood and Gallimore could’ve been early enrollees. Coach Schmidt has their arrival dates circled on his calendar, I’m sure.
Definitely two “beast” candidates from this class. I would add Campbell to that list, also.
Interesting how Dalton is going to fit into the O or maybe the D. Bruiser TE is not needed so this will be fun to watch. Who knows, maybe another Lane Johnson until they find the right position.
Gotta have a package on the goal line, I guess. I think Dalton is just a damn good player and could play just about any skill position.
Definitely. All the incoming heavies look the part, I’d say.
https://twitter.com/SoonerScoop/status/580767072738672640
No one here ever said he had quit the team…or that he wasn’t coming back…or that he wasn’t on spring break last week with his teammates (but I did appreciate them clearly up that last part). We would never dare question the integrity of one’s spring break plans, I can promise you that.
I never accused anyone here of doing so- just posting more info that some might see as a bright spot.
Didn’t mean to imply that you were accusing anyone, just having a little laugh 🙂
How dare you bring something on here from another source!! Lol.
Thanks for this. Really like what he brings to the table. Tough kid with a high motor.
Love all the info from you guys. You have info that no one else has and it comes to us in a timely manner.
However, concerning the quote, “The Sooners couldn’t ask for more than to be involved in this race and like we stated above, there is no question that’s exactly where they find themselves. – (Alex)”
I think this is selling OU short. We couldn’t ask for more? We ought to be expecting a commitment from the kid. I may be taking Alex out of context, if so, I apologize. But this attitude is a Baylor and TCU type of attitude. I don’t like it. This is Okla-freakin-homa. What happened? Is this due to an 8-5 year? Why are we looked upon as less than Bama and Oregon or OSU? (granted OSU won the title). Still this is unacceptable.
You are right we are the Oklahoma Sooners but it ‘s imperative we have a strong bounce back year another 8 and 5 year could do some negavity to some high end 5 star recruits who may question the direction of the program it’s important we win 11 or 12 games this year.
Tennessee goes 8-5 or worse every year and signs top 5 and top 10 classes. But OU can’t why?
Ever been there? It’s nothing like central Oklahoma. Scenery can be a great recruiting tool sometimes. I don’t like it but it’s a fact.
Tennessee is beautiful.
So is Oklahoma…at least the southern half lol
Good one! On a sentimental note, I came to Oklahoma from French Morocco in 1954. It was, and still is, the most beautiful place I’ve ever been. It’s home and always will be.
Going back to earlier in Stoop’s career, and of course during the King’s reign, scenery wasn’t a factor.
I read somewhere but couldn’t find it just now that Tennessee has THE largest recruiting budget in the country. I was able to find the budgets for the 2012-13 season and Tennessee spent just under 1.3 million compared to OU’s 800k…….. Money talks.
One word it’s called the sec conference they are in it we aren’t.
Anyway to have all TFB and us readers pitch and rent a helicopter to see what is going on on the practice field?
Drones man!
Maybe we could use this one. Nice and inconspicuous.
http://www.cnet.com/news/imperial-star-destroyer-drone-patrols-the-skies-above-france/
Exactly. Two of them. One for the defense and the other, the O.
Bob prob has snipers set up to take em out
Coach has his own drone.

get me one with lasers!
Don’t have them yet, but they do have lasers to shoot down drones.
How about a full auto carbine?

Keith Ford is apparently leaving the Sooners per a family member, can’t really confirm or deny this.
Really hope you’re wrong here…
Now his sister is denying these reports, so just a whirlwind of emotions over here.
