Open Post | Monday, Dec. 29th

Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas! Also, best of luck to the Sooners who face Clemson later today!

Pat Allen: One 2015 offensive lineman Oklahoma has continued to recruit for some time is Pat Allen (Reisterstown, MD) out of Maryland, who has been a Georgia commit since this past August. But behind the scenes has continued to speak to a select few coaches. We had a chance to speak to Allen at length this past weekend, and he made it very clear that Bill Bedenbaugh is someone who has continued to recruit him, respectfully, despite his commitment.

You may recall that Allen took an official visit to Norman back in September for the Tennessee game and came away very impressed. Allen also has family in this part of the country (in Texas).

Allen told us that Georgia’s offensive coordinator, Mike Bobo, leaving is just the lastest development that has caused him rethink his commitment. He also said that he’s currently only considering four schools. Those schools being; OU, Georgia, Tennessee & LSU.

He talked with us at length about his relationship to the staffs at both OU and Tennessee after having visited both schools (he’s visited Tennessee twice due to proximity). Pat said he had a relationship with the LSU offensive line coach because he was formerly at Virginia Tech and had offered him prior to making the move to Baton Rouge.

Allen asked us not to divulge his decision date, but we can tell you that a decision is coming very soon. Hard to really say what happens here, but it has to be viewed as at least somewhat of a positive that even just a week or two ago Allen wasn’t even on the radar of OU fans.

Dominique Reed: Our guy Alex caught up with Coffeyville (Kansas) JUCO WR, Dominique Reed. Who confirmed with Alex that Oklahoma has offered, so it appears the Sooners are looking to bring in another JUCO talent. Reed said that he’s planning to visit Norman in January, but has yet to set an exact date.

He said he’s also considering Arkansas, Auburn & Louisville. Reed is originally from Arkansas and was being heavily recruited by both Razorbacks and Cardinals before going the JUCO route.

Thoroughly enjoy TFB. I took advantage of the “free” promo for SoonerScoop, and I still feel like I’m not getting my money’s worth.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Any word on high school recruits in the Orlando area that may have attended bowl practices this past week? I know a number of Louisiana kids made it to last years bowl prep…

  • Spartacus says:

Norvell going full Norvell on us. Heaven forbid you develop more than 1 player per season that you actually developed from HS.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      How about Broyles and Stills?

      • Spartacus says:

Like I said, one per year. He has successfully developed from HS Broyles, Stills, and Shep. That’s it. The rest were juco or transfers. It is no coincidence that this is the first year we haven’t had a transfer/juco WR and it also happens to be the worst set of WRS we’ve had. These are all “Norvell” developed guys, and they are a very dispointing group.

    • Double G says:

I have been curious about this ever since Jordan posted his list of coaches he thought may need to go and the follow up article on Josh Heuple’s history developing QBs. Any chance you could do a similar style article on Norvell’s history with WRs Jordan? I think Spartacus has a solid point here.

      • hOUligan says:

Just read a comment from a poster on another site who ‘claims’ he’s friends with a former OU WR who was down the depth chart. Said Norvell works harder with the ‘1s’ than the other guys so maybe ‘some truth’ to the development thing?

        • Double G says:

If that is true, it certainly explains why none of the 2s seemed ready to start the season, especially considering that the only 1 returning from last year was Shepard. Very frustrating too considering how developing players/depth was something we used to be really good at.

It probably doesn’t help that Norvell is co-offensive coordinator either. I will be really curious to see what happens with the WRs moving forward.

  • Brad Warren says:

I’m excited about the game today-get a win-finish recruiting strong and get ready for 2015. Boomer!

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Sooners need to hit Stoudt every time he drops back to pass. He’ll turn it over a few times if they do

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

What do you think about all of the WR offers? Do you think Coaches have a feeling DGB is leaving? Or do you just think it’s more about young guys not developing fast enough.

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

DGB is probably gone, and aside from Shepard no one has proven to be a difference maker on every play. Need all the talent they can get, plus dont be surprised by some transfers.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

It’s frustrating that certain teams like Baylor and USC get speedy wide outs. I mean OU’s current crop does not seem to scare anyone on deep routes. Kenny Stills, Broyles, Saunders, beat people deep. What’s the problem here? Since it’s not the OL, it’s either the QB or the speed and ability of the WR to get separation. Is it Knight’s deep ball inability?

        • EasTex says:

          I think it’s the WR’s.
Last deep ball I remember TK making was to Shep on the first play of the Iowa St game.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Yeah I remember that as well. There were others, but by no means a consistent threat without Shepard. Neal does not look fast to me. May be it’s me but the WR and Secondary are not real speed burners.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

None of them have elite speed unfortunately

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Thanks, that’s what I thought. You’d think with Stills, Saunders, Brown and Broyles in the league we could get one or two speed guys like USC has. I mean, just one?

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

I believe OU missed out on Agholor, Treadwell, and of course KD Cannon. Those three in the fold and none of this WR talk would be happening

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

            Thanks. That’s right.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

            You’re welcome

          • Tucker says:

Just to make argument for arguments sake, but Quick is well… pretty quick. At least in my opinion. I recall a few times that we’ve had open deep over the top and Knight missed him.

          • EasTex says:

I like Neal. It isn’t always straight line speed, but the ability to sell a move and get open.
I actually like our young secondary and think they will be very good. Having Thomas as the other corner is a difference maker, to me.

          • Tucker says:

I agree, Thomas just needs to learn how to play flip his hips when playing man zone and ride him into the boundary instead of running two yards in front of him.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

No doubt, I believe Knights deep ball is probably his best asset. He missed a few this year but, also dropped quite a few in too. I blame the WRs and hope that Humphrey can bring some speed to the field and either Mead or Todd some size to stretch the field as well, most of these WRs were brought in for screen passes and need RAC ability not so much straight line speed. The offense is turning over to a new style and while it is players wont fit the mold correctly.

          • Indy_sooner says:

There is an element of truth in that. Saunders and Shep had speed to burn and run really crisp routes. I noticed that younger WRs have struggled to either get open or are easily jammed at the LOS which may contribute to timing issues.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Hopefully they’ll be stronger and quicker next season

    • Super K says:

We’ve been of the mind that DGB is gone and we’ve noted that’s what we’ve been hearing on The Original Posters so yeah that could be it. As far as young guys not developing…I think it would be a scary notion to think that they’d be ready to give up on guys like Mead and Todd after only a few months on campus. So hopefully it’s more about DGB not about the lack of timely development. But I agree with you…it raises some questions in my mind.

      • Steve Johns says:

Could it be they’re shuffling a couple of guys (Meier/Andrews) to TE?

        • Steve Johns says:

Actually I think Meier is already a TE so that wouldn’t be the case with him.

        • Super K says:

They had Meier and Andrews at TE in fall camp…though Meier was doing a lot of work with the WRs. I think Andrews may actually have been moved back to WR but can’t recall for sure.

  • Mark slavin says:

Saw on 247 that Jalin Barnett top 2 is Nebraska and okie light that Ou coaches are no longer pursuing him? Have the brainiacs heard anything on this?

    • Super K says:

We have heard of it. It isn’t so much that OU is done pursuing him. More so that he is at the back of a line.

      • Mark slavin says:

Also looking good on gallimore what do you think our chances?

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

You would think you would make your top in state recruits priority. That’s just me. I would want somebody who loves OU vs someone you have to sell OU to.

        • EasTex says:

Not sure he loves OU, or he could have been in the fold months ago.

          • Super K says:

EasTex is right…these Oklahoma kids are free to draw out their recruitment and make OU wait…but it goes both ways…they can’t get mad when OU happens to grab 5 great recruits themselves and decide that they want to be very selective about who they make their sixth commit. Perhaps it’ll be a lesson to Oklahoma kids. Either way we certainly wish Jalin well and he’s still on OU’s board…but just not as high as other targets.

      • Tucker says:

I’m just curious, but any reason why we are no longer pursuing him? I remember earlier in the year it appeared Barnett was a lock, and he still appears high on multiple boards. Is there something that coaching staff has seen that others haven’t? Or did we just lose this race?

        • Jim says:

Tucker, this is a mix of Barnett waiting too long and him getting exposed as not good as we thought. Add to that the talk of him being too heavy and looking very slow, and things came back to bite ol’ Jalin. This has been the overall understanding on him for the past month or so.

      • Indy_sooner says:

I will take that as a good sign even if it would be good to keep top Okies in state.
I am not one to tell commits they should select their schools but, but with Arky and OU’s solid history of putting linemen in the league, it baffles me that this went out so long…

  • hOUligan says:

You guys get the memo from TFB about the rate hike in order to increase the travel budget? SpecK heading to St. Petersberg for live updates from practice all week. Jordan doing the same for the U.S. Army AA game in San Antone. JY drew the Semper Fi game in Carson, CA. LoL Wishful thinking. Intriguing news on Pat Allen. See he is playing in the Semper Fi game on Sun. the 4th. Planning to watch and maybe he will announce then?

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Very excited for the game. Knight’s back.

    • Mr. Jones says:

No one can ever say Wheeler doesn’t at least look the part!

    • hOUligan says:

Surprised but Jefferson ‘looks’ thicker than Wheeler. Still hoping for Wheeler to OU. As someone said, noone gonna mistake that kid for a safety.

    • AMKing00 says:

Jefferson is a beast. And my next comment is not saying I dont think he will be a heck of a player in college but I have seen him up close multiple times and can tell you I have a concern with how narrow his shoulders are. Not a big framed kid at all so makes me wonder if he will be able to put on the weight needed at the next level. Again still think the kid will be a playmaker but just a concern of mine with him.

  • Jason Vos says:

Where is all this Lampkin switching news coming from. All his posts seem pro Texas

    • Zack says:

He’s made waves saying he’s got a surprise for people at the beginning of January. Looks like he and his HS teammate dalton want to play together. I don’t think texas has offered dalton. And lampkin’s mom loves OU from what I’ve read and who doesn’t like monty?

    • Super K says:

It’s something that he’s tried to keep under wraps but there are definitely legs to the rumor. To me it isn’t a done deal til it’s done but I know where the rumor is coming from and it’s from a sound source.

      • Zack says:

And the rumor includes wariboko or is that just wishful thinking?

        • Super K says:

There are definitely people at OU that feel good about Wariboko. I know Brandon does as well. I personally don’t. Just feel like he’s set on living in California and will go to UCLA. But we’ll find out for sure here in a few days.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

This would be awesome for two reasons. First, we’d be getting a pretty solid DL. Second, he’d be pulling the rug out from under UT, and while it might not be last minute, it’s getting pretty close.

  • EasTex says:

Have read that Grissom and Romar are out; that Quick has been dealing with a groin injury and Shead is a game day decision with soreness.
What do we know of Q Hayes status?

    • Jordan Esco says:

No reason to believe Hayes won’t be available based on Stoops’ comments. Grissom has been known for a while now and Romar obviously got hurt in practice just a couple days ago.

  • JJSoona says:

Speculative question here: How much money would DGB stand to lose by opting early vs having a year of proven production and good behavior?

    • Zack says:

To be honest and this is what an agent is probably telling him. “Sure you will lose 4-6 million initially but the lower you get drafted, the sooner the 2nd contract rolls around which is the big money deal.”

      • JJSoona says:

Thanks Zack. Just seems to me he would be better served by showing something positive. That’s just me though.

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

If he stays and blows out a knee next season, he stands to lose a lot. If you can get 1st round money, staying and hoping for an even higher scout rating next year is really rolling the dice.

Bob claims he gives sound advice to those considering leaving early. If so, I suspect he doesn’t twist DGB’s arm to stay.

      • Indy_sooner says:

I think I have seen a quip where Bob has advocated he stay 1 more year. forgot where though..

        • Exiled In Ohio says:

The only reason I can see for him to stay is if he feels an obligation due to OU sticking its neck out for him.

          • SoonerOracle737 says:

This is exactly why I think he stays and plays next year. A big thank you to Stoops’ support.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Or maybe his draft grade isn’t as high as most think it will be.

If he isn’t a top 15-20 pick, I think he could come back and easily jump into that range.

          • Brent says:

Looking at who is entering the draft I don’t think DGB would be a top 20 pick right now.

  • Zack says:

Ricky deberry sr. Is on Twitter trying to help recruit Daniels and neal. Maybe others but I only saw those 2.

  • Stephen Dale says:

Hopefully a couple of more quality LB’s commit …..Beyond filling THAT need, maybe another QB recruit , another CB, another DE or two………

    • hOUligan says:

I know I’m prolly goin’ to regret this but…Golly, Stephen. That’s almost positive. Who do you want that you see OU possibly getting?

      • Stephen Dale says:

too many names to narrow them down …. just trying to assess OU;s needs….hopefully the Sooners finish their class with some real quality talent…..

  • EasTex says:

    Score by quarters 1st 2nd 3rd 4th OT Total
    Oklahoma 138 134 114 81 0 467
    Opponents 48 103 65 78 3 297
    Looking for a fast start.

    • hOUligan says:

Yikes. From those numbers looks like we need a strong finish. Would love to get out front and wear their D down in the 4th with strong running and a few scores.

  • Sam Philbeck says:

I think I saw someone mention about earlier, but just checked 247 and the crystal ball. They have OU being in the lead for both Gallimore and Wheeler. FWIW also have OU in the lead for Orr as well.

  • Mark slavin says:

I have a question for everyone Rodney Anderson is a high 4*and soso is a 5*Rodney had an awesome year what is he lacking to not increase to the 5*not that it matters but just would like to understand what the site’s aren’t seeing in him?

    • EasTex says:

Considering the history of the rating services, I would think Anderson’s commitment to OU as a factor.
I remember last year when Garnett de-commited from Texsa he lost a star the next day.

    • Zack says:

I think scouts don’t believe anderson has great speed (which is wrong) he’s been timed faster than mixon. I think it has a lot to do with his mentality being a hard working kid a lot like perine. If he was flashy he might get more notice.
And those same scouts know that soso has some “bad habits” but they look the other way because he’s someone that fans follow.

      • Mark slavin says:

That’s sad if it’s really that petty I believe he will be pretty successful at Ou so screw the scouts.Lol

        • EasTex says:

I’ve watched him for three years and Anderson is as good as there is. When he gets S&C and doesn’t have to compete with two little brothers for the food in the house he will be even thicker and stronger.
The only knocks I have on him is he needs more upper body strength, and needs to work on his blocking and ball security. His patience in reading the holes, his speed and explosiveness, his great hands, along with his maturity are the things I like about him most. He also knows what it means to be a team player and to work within a system.

    • hOUligan says:

Surprised to not find Anderson on any all star game rosters. Am looking forward to seeing Soso in the UA game to see how he stacks up.

    • Brent says:

I was under the impression that the star ranking was more towards NFL potential than college potential (which doesn’t make any sense to me). Because football IQ and work ethic are hard to extrapolate, they tend to focus on the measurables such as speed, size and strength.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Stars don’t strap on a helmet and play the game. I look at a kids heart more than I look at stars.

    • Stephen says:

OU has no “swag” right now, thus if you go to OU, you don’t have any “swag” yourself.

  • EasTex says:

Here is to hoping every couch in WV is on fire in a few hours.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Gonna be tough without Trickett, but I am hoping for a strong Big 12 showing this bowl season. Wins by Baylor, TCU, OU, and KSU would go a long ways in supporting that the Big 12 was either the best or 2nd best conference this season.

      • EasTex says:

I just can’t get into the support your conference thing, unlike that one conference that gets promoted with every breath by the alleged experts. I still view those teams as rivals.

        • SoonerfanTU says:

Normally I agree with you. I just think the Big 12 conf could use a “boost” this offseason, especially after what I think was the unfair jumping of Ohio State over two better teams from our conference.

But I get what you are saying.

          • EasTex says:

And I understand your reasoning, just can’t go against the raised hackles when those rival teams are mentioned.
I actually understand OSU jumping those two. Such an overwhelming victory on national TV in a CCG against a highly ranked team is hard to ignore.
If it were a true playoff there would be at least eight teams and there would be two Big 12 teams involved. Four teams is a beauty pageant and the Frogs and Bears just didn’t look good enough in a one piece bathing suit and they don’t have the fan base OSU does.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I feel the same as you but I wasn’t shocked given the history at tOSU.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

ESPN will spin the Big 12 victories as wins over “uninterested” teams.

        • Double G says:

I understand not wanting to adopt a practice I feel we all have grown to hate (rooting for a conference rather than a team). And I know from some of your posts below that you understand what SoonerfanTU is saying, but at this point you almost have to root for the conference to do well, in spite of rivalries (I know I’m going to get lit up by someone for saying that), because the negative perception of the Big 12 as being weak/playing no defense certainly won’t help OU going forward in the current playoff format. It already bit TCU and Baylor this year, so we know conference perception matters. And I’d say it maters even more now than it has in the past because IMO Ohio State getting picked over Baylor and TCU had a lot more to do with perception than it did with performance. You could point to the CCG win, but that’s one game and their body of work throughout the season didn’t support that choice to me.

          • EasTex says:

            But…my hackles.
At least I’m pulling for WVU. Got to go with the Hogs tonight, though.

          • Double G says:

I saw that! And as much as I want the conference to do well, you’re not going to see me hold it against you for not pulling for the whorns.

I can’t really get behind Arkansas either though. Bielema being against the spread and hurry up style of offense (I’ve never liked cry babies), plus Arkansas being in the SEC west is just too much for me to pull for them. So I guess I’m about as close to being a neutral party as you can get in the world of college football for that game.

          • EasTex says:

Not a fan of the Hogs, only this time because it’s Texsa.
Actually, the teams we are competing with the most for recruits are the teams I want to lose.
I don’t see a down side with Sparty winning, but I do with Ole Miss.
If the Big 12 won out in the bowls, it wouldn’t bother me too much.

          • Double G says:

I agree the teams we are starting to have to fight for recruits need to end up with an L to end the season.

A loss to Sparty wouldn’t kill me either (if it happens), but I don’t know if I could stomach the offseason fallout if Ole Miss were to beat TCU. It’s long enough as it is without eSECpin and the other sports media outlets having extra fodder to add to the biased stream of sewage they consider reporting these days.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I don’t think anyone should light you up, as much as I hate rooting for other teams, we do need this conference (or what’s left of it) to make a good showing.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I don’t think the no defense perception was part of it. If it was then we need to throw these bums on the committee out. I believe if it was OU or Texas instead of Bay/TCU one of the traditional powers would not have been denied ever against OSU.

          • Double G says:

I agree with you regarding OU and Texas.

It just irritates the heck out of me that when teams in the Big 12 conference improve and their respective programs become stronger/more competitive on a consistent basis that it is viewed as Texas and OU losing a step. Other conferences don’t have that problem, but for some reason the Big 12 does. Baylor, OK State, KSU, WVU, and TCU are all programs that have improved significantly in the last 5 years. It’s about time they started getting the credit and recognition they’ve earned. And its also about time OU starts getting the credit it earns when it beats them because Texas isn’t the only other powerhouse in the conference anymore.

          • EasTex says:

            Well said.

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Agree. Last year I went to a sports bar in my OU shirt on opening weekend and two guys wearing K St shirts shouted “Big 12 Baby” I said it’s OU or nobody. They didn’t understand that comment at all.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

      Looking good so far.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

What is the latest on Josh Smith? He might be my second favorite LB prospect that OU is after.

I believe he is the guy that decommitted from Vandy, no?

  • DCinAZ says:

Two JUCO WR’s? Our WR recruits must be busting left and right.

  • Jason says:

With OU being in Orlando and with Ty’s dad the coach at Apopka has OU tried or ever really made a push for stud OT Martez Ivey? You would think, OU would have some kind of an in there to at least get a one on one conversation with him! Just curious, first time poster, I really enjoy reading these open posts and what TFB brings to us!

    • paganpink says:

To heck with just Ivey- make a play for his dad as offensive coordinator! Innovative and hugely successful, we could let Heupel go back to coaching quarterbacks and make a big change that might even bring Ivey with it while putting new blood into our offense.

  • EasTex says:

No way the Sooners kick off at 4:30, the way this game is going.
Probably be more like 5:30 or possibly an alternate channel.
