1st Half Notes | OU vs. Tennessee Recap

1st Quarter

– Great first call by Riley. Get’s a run action going left and rolls BM right looking for an open pass. Most would expect a run call on the first play so Riley shows the Vols a run action and gets the entire front 7 flowing away from the play. Unfortunately, BM just targets the wrong receiver.

– Offensively throughout this quarter the fault is all over the place. On some occasions it’s the offensive line. On some occasions it’s drop passes. On some occasions BM isn’t seeing guys. On some occasions the RB isn’t seeing the hole or being patient enough. I might get quite a bit of disagreement here but I don’t think the OL was as bad as the perception. The penalties obviously hurt.

– On that last note, you can see early in this game that Mixon is still in the process of acclimating to the game speed. Perine is patient and then decisive. Mixon is still in a bit of a hurry.

– Also related to the point above, the interior line pull well. There were a couple times where OU got some nice smash blocks from a pulling guard.

– Have to say that even though Orlando Brown didn’t have the best game. In terms of athleticism he looked a lot better getting out of his stance in pass pro. I was very concerned with how heavy footed he looked last week but the Vols pass rusher’s seem to bring out some of his natural athleticism and he just looked quicker and lighter on his feet. Clearly a ways to go but he showed more promise.

– Defensively the team played fine in the 1st quarter. Just settling in. No glaring issues. There was an occasional man out of position that gave the Vols just enough room to make something happen.

– Striker and Bond playing together in that 50 front really works when opposing teams are playing with a TE or H-back on the field.

– Bond plays to the boundary and Striker to the field. Both are natural when they drop. Really surprised at how well Bond drops to the curl/flat in cover 3. He had a batted ball and one nearly batted ball. He does a good job of reading the QBs eyes. Both are good pass rushers and both know how to play the run. The total ability between those two guys is certainly a plus for the Sooners. Bond is very good against the run.

– Alexander had a good first quarter. Was decisive. One of his best plays was on a short yardage situation where he quickly made his way between two blockers and tackled the RB. I love the decisiveness but he stopped his feet and contact and ended up on his back and the RB was able to get the first down.

– Thomas was much more decisive coming down field. Overall he looks like he’s playing faster and with more confidence.

– Parker is good. I know he got the TD scored on him but I’m not sure what he could have done better. They were matched up in a banjo/man coverage and he rode the guy outside well, broke well…just couldn’t quite close the space. Perfectly thrown ball. Parker is really decisive…really big…really fluid. He came down hill in a hurry on a beautiful overload field blitz call by Mike Stoops. They kept chipping Striker so Mike decided to teach them a little lesson and it worked perfectly.

– In the first quarter JT was giving a little too much space even when he was matched up in man. He breaks well but that balance of space for a DB is just one that takes a little time to master.

– Dimon and Romar are hard to move on the defensive line. Wade looked good as well. Romar really knows how to sit down and refuse to be scooped.

– Dom and Evans give OU some nice underneath matching coverage. They’re both able to ride routes well. I noticed that by alignment Evans had coverage responsibilities so Tennessee tried to trade the TE and get Dom in coverage and he did a nice job as well.

2nd Quarter

– 1st play of the 2nd quarter was a nice blitz call by Mike where he gets Tapper and Striker on a stunt. Nice to see him bringing Striker on an inside blitz. The play ends up being a screen that Oklahoma reads and blows up.

– Throughout the first half field position really hurt the Sooners defense. They gave up some plays but it was nothing glaring. The problem was Tennessee was just working with such a short field that any decent reception of 15+ got the Vols within striking distance.

– The TD that put Tennessee up 17-0 was just a great play call where the Sooners didn’t have numbers. Bond got cleared out and may have had outside contain and came too far inside. JT had no chance there with like 3 linemen running at him haha.

– Romar. This guy is quick.

– I was probably a little overly critical of JT on the long completion that set up the TD. I thought it was man to man coverage initially and felt JT played the route way to loose. Going back though, it appears to be a 3 deep and the receiver just got between him and Thomas. This issue was one that Baylor, KSU and other big 12 teams took advantage of last year against Oklahoma’s cover 3 defense where they get a WR between the CB and the middle safety. The Sooners going to have to find a way to tighten up the spacing on those skinny post routes otherwise it’s going to be something that Big 12 teams attack frequently. If JT doesn’t see a switch, I’d reckon he should play that tighter

– Mayfield was a mixed bag. At times he’s rushing things but it’s very likely because he doesn’t know how well his OL is going to protect him on any given play. On one play they protected him perfectly but he let go of the ball wayyyyy too early. Then the very next play he’s almost immediately forced to leave the pocket when the interior lineman let a man come free.

– I think the biggest concern I have with BM was his lack of accuracy on the deep balls. The Sooners are going to have to be able to stretch the field. Can’t say that enough. On back to back deep throws he missed by a lot. BM missed an open Jarvis Baxter for a sure TD as well. On a 1st down deep when the Sooners are backed up against their own goal he had Westbrook with a step and just way over shot him. This is the completion that a team like Baylor will usually make and just completely shut the crowd up. The Sooners need this element to come alive badly. It will change everything. It will open up everything. It’ll either pull safeties back, change the coverage calls or change the alignments. Regardless it’ll loosen things up underneath for both the run and the pass. Without that threat teams can play the Sooners very aggressively.

– Mixon had a great run. Showed his ability to break tackles and keep his legs moving. He also showed much better patience and vision in the 2nd quarter. Love that jump cut.

– When Baxter and Dede block well the RBs pay them off with nice runs.

– I’m telling you when Alvarez comes around the corner on a pull he is scary. He’s agile and has little wasted movement and is looking for blood. He dang near drove the Vol LB into the earth.

– In this quarter the Sooners started the run the ball much better which led to one of their bigger passing plays. The ability to run forced the Vols to play a little cover 2 (cover 2 sink) and gave Durron a little space and Mayfield put the ball right between the underneath receiver and the safety. If you can’t beat man coverage with any regularity in the passing game then you better be able to run against their front. The Sooners did that better in the 2nd quarter.

– One of my favorite things about the 2nd quarter is it showed you how well the Sooners can run when they play well up front. In other words, it tells you that issues that have running at times are not talent issues…they’re getting the kinks worked out. It helps having an OC that is patient with the run and let’s the OL find their groove. Can’t say that enough.

– OL had some critical errors in this quarter that stalled the only scoring drive and led to only 3 points. On one play they didn’t pick up the blitz. When the LT had to choose between two defenders rushing he wrongly chose the defender furthest away and left the interior rusher free. This forced Mayfield to leave the pocket early. Had him picked up the correct rusher then Mayfield would’ve had just enough time to dump the ball off to the RB. On another play the RT just got flat out beat and a designed roll out, forcing Mayfield to get rid of the ball early.

– Man that defensive play where the Sooners line up in their 5 front and slant right putting Bond 1 on 1 with the TE was lovely. Bond was able to dip and shoulder and bend around the corner beautifully and cause a fumble. I tracked the speed and Striker did beat him off the line but Striker was worked against a tackle and was pushed down as he tried to turn the corner. But the up-field threat of both those guys when they rush together is terrifying.

– Sooners had good field position and were able to move the ball towards the end of the 2nd quarter. But again a false start by the OL ultimately led to a stalled drive that yielded no points. The good news is that’s something that can be cleaned up.

– Man Walker is quick when he wants to be.

nothing to see here…..move along to the 4th quarter….

  • Okie80 says:

    @super K
Did you notice Ty Darlington, swiveling his head left to right , right before he snapped the ball? Was this a signal for the o-line ?

    • Thomas Lenard says:

It almost appeared as a signal to the UT DEs…man that had his snap down and was past OUr tackles quick. He needs to change his timing there some.

    • BR says:

I thought it was for the O-line, not being able to hear and all. he didnt start doing it until 4th quarter I think. And I believe he started after Orlando got a false start call

  • Boom says:

Great assessment K and thanks for helping in pointing out our secondary coverage’s. This should help all of understand when someone is beat, missed an assignment, or played with to much cushion. Thanks

  • Will Narramore says:

Hopefully as OL pass pro improves we see Baker get more comfortable and take more shots deep down the field to Westbrook and Shephard. Don’t have to hit all of them, just keep the safeties back

  • Doobie74OU says:

Need help from a football guru! What is the difference in a 3-4 Defense with Striker and Bond lined up as OLB and a 4-3 were Striker is lined up as a “DE” and Bond as the Sam LB? Is it just coverage assignments, or is there really no difference, or is the whole D-line lined up with different Gap responsibilities? Just looking for info nothing specifically about this game!

    • Sooner 76 says:

The 3-4-4 is the same as the 50 defense. Two outside LBers on the LOS and 2 inside LBers. You have a NT and two DEs. This allows only 4 DBs. As stated above, Bond is on the weak side (boundary) and Striker is on the strong side. The DEs play left side and right side, not weak and strong sides.

The 4-2-5 defense trades an OLBer for an extra safety, that is, the NB. Also, the front alignment is different. The standup DE (Striker) is usually on the boundary (weak) side and the other DE is strong side (Tapper). Rather than DEs, you have a the 3-technique tackle, who is on Striker’s side, and a NT.

Sometimes, however, in the 3-4-4, they drop Striker into coverage in place of a NB, so it is very similar to the 4-2-5.

What I like about the overall system is that it’s flexible and confuses the offense.

  • Randy says:

I said I before the year, I trust 4 LBs out there more than I do our secondary.. Ofc it ALWAYS and should depend on who we are playing that week. But the versatility and depth on the DL and at LB were the difference in this game.

  • BR says:

    – Man Walker is quick when he wants to be

Yeah I really like Walker but hafta admit, watching the game a 2nd & 3rd time, he does take a few plays off. Im not sure why you wouldnt just take yourself out if your not tired, we got the depth.

  • OceanDescender says:

I think Brown really kept those highly touted edge rushers at bay more than anyone expected he would. Completely agree with the fact that if he gets his hands on the man in front of him, that guy needs to be taken out of the oven: he’s done!

    Edit: Those penalties, though…

  • RocketCitySooner says:

Patience is an underrated quality for a good running back. Some times the difference in a good run and a great run is slowing down just enough to let a blocker get the angle on a defender.

    • Birddawg says:

Patience .. vision. “You can have all the speed in the world but if you don’t have the vision.. you’ll just end up running to nowhere in a hurry.”

      • Brad Holland says:

I think this is what Ross lacked. He has great speed, but his ability to be patient and have the vision to make the right cut is his biggest weakness.

  • Birddawg says:

“This is the completion that a team like Baylor will usually make and just completely shut the crowd up. The Sooners need this element to come alive badly. It will change everything”

Is that something we can realistically expect this year as the season progresses or will that take a offseason to perfect?

    • Exiled In Ohio says:

My take is that Baker is a decent passer, and that once he settles down a bit he will make those throws. He needs to settle his jitters and gain confidence in the OL, then he will plant his feet and be accurate.

      • hOUligan says:

Agree. His forte at the moment is the ability to get the ball away quickly on those short and middle routes. And gotta say, that fade was money. And the pass where there was PI called on UT, from the backline shot that ball dropped like a stone and might have been high-pointed…not saying the receiver could have come down in bounds but it was close. And the TD pass was just about right…just on the fingertips. He’s close.

        • SoonerOracle737 says:

Yes, he’s close. Just develop the timing on the deep ball and it opens up everything. I hope they work on that in the next few games before the tough part of schedule comes.

      • Scott says:

        Very True

  • Sooner 76 says:

    Great information, Super K, thanks!

  • thebigdroot says:

Paul Finebaum (sp?) was wearing an OU hat on CFB Live.

  • Cush Creekmont says:

Thanks! I’ll be waiting for the 2nd half breakdown.

  • Robertson / Robertson 2016 says:

Super K, the fact that you had the mind to jot down these notes in real time is impressive. If I wasn’t screaming at random roster names and numbers that I saw (whether on the field, out of the play, or otherwise), I was chipmunk-ing MoonPies and pretzels.

    • cdzendolet says:

About the only play I was able to see develop was the OT run by Hurd. Striker was lined up on the short side of the field, but Tennessee moved a man out left as a WR, and Striker came from short side to cover that WR. Left no run support on the short side, and Hurd pretty much ran in untouched on the right.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Early on, I was about to main-line my salsa and guac. At halftime, I barely touched my good smoked ribs (now after the win – those ribs caught hell).

But, I’m with you R/R – fine presence of mind to actually take notes instead of scream at a defenseless TV. Thanks for that SK.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Random roster names eh? I, too, was yelling at Derek Westerfield, Kevin McClanahan, and Roger Borman. Terrible play.

  • soonermusic says:

    Great notes, Super K. Thanks.

  • Birddawg says:

    Teams with the most penalties.
    Out of 128 FBS teams.
    127 Baylor
    105 Tx Christian
    108 Oklahoma
    102 Kansas St
Probably should be taken like a grain of salt. But I just though I share it.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I liked the play of the Dline. I would imagine that the proper feeling from a QB when a Dline is smashing is claustrophobia. The DEs have you boxed in on both sides that the DTs are crashing down on top of you.

  • Sooner 76 says:

A note about the offensive alignments in the Air Raid Offense.

As you all know the OL often has bigger splits between them. This is more about receivers and backs.

The system uses somewhat familiar terms. The receivers are noted as X, Y, and Z. The backs are H and F. Because they have different numbers of receivers in different sets, then some of the designations are interchangeable.

The left outside receiver is the X. The right outsider receiver is the Z. The tight end is Y. The fullback is H and the feature back (running back) is F. Most know this much. When it gets tricky is when they use slot receivers.

The left slot receiver is the H, so the FB comes out. When they use a right slot receiver, the tight end is out. That is why when they use a TE, it usually on the right side. You can see this when they sub. That is why Andrews is a right slot receiver, b/c he can also slide back and forth to the TE position.

Where it confuses me is when they use trips to the left, then it is Neal who comes over, as opposed to Shepard. That may be part of the system, or it may be b/c they want Shep to be isolated over there (I suspect the latter).

  • James says:

Well this explains the first three qtrs. of the game.

    • Slim Sooner says:

      Awesomely hilarious. Hadn’t seen this.

Yeah, I noticed the ‘designed run play for Baker the whole way’ wasn’t what Stoops had indicated

Thanks for your notes, SK. You see so much more than I ever do while I’m stressing and pacing in real game time, including positive play when it seems like we’re just stinking it up. I’ve rewatched the 4th quarter and OT’s several times. Now I’m sure going to go back and watch the first half again actually sitting in my chair! I appreciate your taking time to write up your notes for all of us.

  • Kevin says:

    So good!

I think Striker + Bond is more lethal than Striker + Grissom was last year. Bond has been phenomenal! Love that not only do we have good edge rushers, MS is mixing up the blitzes too…makes me wonder if the limitations we saw last year were partly because we couldn’t cover well enough to make MS comfortable being too aggressive. Saturday the D looked like old-form OU defense…angry, aggressive, and pressure.

    • Fear The Magic says:

I agree Striker + Bond = scary good.
I hope that Baylor goes into our game thinking that theyre going up against the same “Deer in the headlights” defense when we play them. This year will be different.

Loved these two in the wild cat. Pick you poison. Neither one tastes good. Sliced or smashed?

  • Kevin says:

Another thing that we’ve been hearing a lot this year is how everyone is trusting “the system.” This seems like a very selfless team on both offense and defense, everyone looking out for each other and trusting that the coaches will put them in the best position to succeed. A far cry from last year, where it seemed like the players had a hard time buying into the system and sometimes outright defying the coaches (granted, might have been justified). Different attitude this year!

  • Scott Moore says:

Great analysis and thank you. I am really, really excited about this Defense. The whole team but the D can be scary good. The maturity in some of these guys is really starting to show. Bond is going to be huge for us of course. Parker seems like another break out player. I seriously think he’s going to be All American good. Fun to watch. Interested to see how they do against a full on spread. Tulsa should be a wonderful test and help us prepare for the Baylor’s and TCU’s…This schedule is nicely set up for us. This just seems like a team that’s going to really grow week to week. By the time we play Baylor, we should be pretty salty. We should be undefeated at that point as long as we don’t over look a Tech or K-State. Texas.
