The Path to Norman

Gavin Freeman, an Oklahoma City product, came from an OU family. His dad, Jason Freeman, was a tight end at Oklahoma in the 90’s. He now coaches at Heritage Hall High School, where Gavin attended school. Despite offers from Air Force, Tulsa, and Texas Tech, the transition to Coach Venables was a push for the Freeman family to push for a spot with the Sooners. Gavin landed a preferred walk-on spot in the spring of 2022.

Career so Far

Freeman impressed right from the beginning; on the first touch of his collegiate career, he went almost 50 yards for a touchdown, showing off his blazing speed and ability to get around defenders. In limited targets, he was able to impress with several key catches. Following the 2022 season, Freeman was placed on scholarship.

Highlights

This Season

Freeman became a fan favorite in his freshman season. In 2023, the receiver group is in need of guys to step up. While there is plenty of talent, the experience and depth in the room is low. Drake Stoops returns and will likely man the slot receiver spot; however, Freeman’s speed and play-making ability will land him on the field frequently in year two.
