The Path to Norman

Austin Stogner was a highly-ranked tight end in the 2019 class, standing out as a big, physical player. He is built from the same prototype as Mark Andrews and Grant Calcaterra. As one of his first offers, OU battled for the young man’s commitment with plenty of other top-tier programs. Austin, however, decided to end his recruitment fairly early, committing a year and a half before his signing day. He was part of four high-profile receivers who signed with the Sooners in the 2019 class, the others being Jadon Haselwood, Theo Wease, and Trejan Bridges.

Career so Far

2019 started with Stogner, Grant Calcaterra, and Lee Morris highlighting the Tight End spot. While Stogner was certainly talented enough to contribute, a redshirt season seemed possible with the experience in front of him. However, Calc played in only three games in 2019 and then pulled back from football, leaving a big hole in the Sooners offense. The staff turned to Stogner to step up. He played in all fourteen games and seemed very comfortable in the offense. However, Stogner was one of several talented freshmen receivers to play much fewer minutes than many OU fans would have expected or hoped.

In 2020, Stogner was targeted much more frequently than in 2019, developing a connection with Spencer Rattler. Unfortunately, injury time kept him sidelined toward the end of the year. Despite that, the big receiver earned All-Big 12 2nd team honors for the season.

Stogner’s third season at Oklahoma was hampered by injuries, specifically a hit against Kansas. Despite that, he still made contributions in several key games.

Following the 2021 season, Stogner transferred to South Carolina, joining fellow former Sooners Spencer Rattler and Coach Shane Beamer. He was a starter throughout the season and a consistent part of the offense.

After the 2022 season, a pull to home drew the tight end back to the Sooners.

Highlights

This Season

Austin Stogner comes back to a tight end room ready for him to lead. He will start this season, with incoming transfer Blake Smith and returning second-year players Jason Llewellyn and Kaden Helms rounding out the position group. Stogner has shown the ability to be a big factor in the passing game and seems to have grown in his blocking while at South Carolina. In his last season playing college football, but fourth in Norman, Stogner could have a big season ahead.
