The Path to Norman
Coach Lincoln Riley and Spencer Rattler have a very long relationship. The top-ranked quarterback was offered by Riley in the spring of 2016 and was excited to get on campus. Once he did, he loved everything about it.

Shortly after, he announced his intentions to attend OU, giving the Sooners their quarterback very early in the recruiting class.

Career so Far
Rattler arrived in Norman the summer before his first year, with transfer Jalen Hurts as the starter. He took a season to learn from the veteran and develop his college game while utilizing his redshirt season. Rattler did play in three games, including the final series of the Peach Bowl.
2020 was Rattler’s season to take over, and take over he did. Rattler started all season, leading an offense that was facing a lot of turnover at skill positions. He was very good all season, but improved throughout the year. Rattler’s biggest challenge may have been a receiver group prone to drops, as he led the nation in dropped touchdowns. Still, he had an excellent season, finishing as a Davey O’Brien Award Semifinalist, the national freshman of the year by CBS Sports, and an FWAA Freshman All-American. Rattler was also first-team AP All-Big and ranked third nationally with a 92.5 passing grade by PFF. Part of what made him stand out was his ability to make a play outside of the pocket, which he routinely made look easy. Needless to say, it was a big first season as a starter for the quarterback.

Highlights
This Season
If last season was the opening ceremony for Rattler, this year is his big show. Already named to most preseason award watchlists, the quarterback is also expected to lead the Heisman field. His receiver group has been bolstered (a fully healthy Jadon Haselwood and Austin Stogner, along with newcomers Mario Williams and Mike Woods) and he has two experienced running backs behind him. Expectations are high for Rattler and the Sooners, as he has the chance to lead them back to the Playoffs. Sooner fans should enjoy another great Lincoln Riley quarterback this season; it will be his last playing on Saturdays.
