The Path to Norman
Delarrin Turner-Yell had a bit of a slow start to his recruitment. A year from his signing day, he had only a handful of offers. Oklahoma was one of the first, and it certainly put other teams on notice. An April commitment to Baylor seemed to halt things for a moment. However, a visit for ChampUBBQ opened his eyes a bit.

It seemed that, if not for distance, he would have already chosen the Sooners. He decided that OU was worth it soon after with a decommitment from Baylor and a new school in mind.

Career So Far
DTY missed the first six games of the 2018 season due to injury. After that, however, he was one of the most impactful freshmen on campus. He played in seven games, making his presence felt and showing off his closing speed.
2019 saw Turner-Yell step up big. With several options at safety in the offseason, he had to battle to earn his time. Battle he did, as he earned the starting job at strong safety. He was the starter at strong safety for 13 games, missing only the CFP Semifinal due to injury, and finishing second on the team with 75 tackles. In a secondary that was much-maligned, DTY was one of the most consistent pieces.
In 2020, DTY once again started throughout the season at strong safety, ranking second on the team in tackles. The secondary continued to improve as a unit in Coach Grinch’s second season.

has anyone else taken notice of the fact that Delarrin Turner-Yell has been by far the most consistent defender for the #Sooners over the first two games of the season?

This Season
In what will be his third straight season starting, DTY has his highest level of competition yet. A combination of Key Lawrence, Bryson Washington, and Justin Broiles will be pushing Pat Fields at DTY for snaps at safety. Don’t look for Turner-Yell to give up his starting role, however, as he looks to lead the Sooners secondary in 2021.
