The Path to Norman

John Mateer played high school football in Texas, where he was a four-year starter and had a prolific career. He went to Washington State out of high school, where he spent three seasons. Following the 2024 season and the whirlwind of activity with Washington State, Mateer entered the portal. He was one of the most sought-after players on the market, but the Sooners and newly-joined OC Ben Arbuckle were able to land the QB.

Career so Far

Mateer took a redshirt season in 2022, playing in just one game.

In 2023, Mateer played in 11 games, but in a reserve role. He earned Pac-12 Fall Academic Honor Roll for the season.

2024 was Mateer’s breakout campaign. He started in all 12 games at quarterback, setting all sorts of Wazzu single-season records and ranking highly across the nation in most passing stats. Mateer was a Manning Award finalist and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award semifinalist.

Mateer was Oklahoma’s starter from day one in 2025 and helped the Sooners reach the College Football Playoff. He set a program record for passing yards in a debut and was white hot for the first several games. A fractured throwing-hand thumb that required surgery led to one missed game and impacted his game for the rest of the season. Still, Mateer led the offense, using both his legs and his arm to show what makes him special.

Highlights

This Season

Mateer returns as Oklahoma’s unquestioned starting quarterback with a full offseason of recovery from his thumb injury; an upgraded group of receivers should give him a platform to pair his running ability with more consistent decision-making. Whitt Newbauer is the leading backup, while Mateer begins the year on the Maxwell, Walter Camp, Davey O’Brien, and Johnny Unitas Golden Arm watch lists.
