The Path to Norman

Gavin Sawchuk, a Colorado product, was one of the highest-ranked backs in the 2022 class. He started picking up offers three years before his signing day, with teams including Michigan, Washington, Alabama, Florida, Ohio State, and many more eventually vying for the back’s attention. Coach Murray worked hard to land Sawchuk and was rewarded for his hard work with a commitment.

Career so Far

Sawchuk took a redshirt season his first year on campus, but did see time in two games. He earned a couple snaps against TCU, but had a breakout game against Florida State in the bowl game.

The OU running back room had a challenging 2023 season. Sawchuk was banged up to start the season, seeing only limited action. The final third of the season, however, saw him go five straight games with double digit carries and triple digit yards. In fact, Sawchuk averaged 7.17 yards per carry over the final five games. He ended the season as the clear cut number one back.

Highlights

This Season

Sawchuk starts 2024 as the unquestioned leader of the running back room. OU enters the SEC with a new offensive coordinator, giving a fresh start to the running back room. While Sooner fans hope he has plenty of help from the rest of the group, Sawchuk looks set to have a big season this fall.
