100 Days to Football Time in Oklahoma: #13 Caleb Williams

The Path to Norman

Caleb Williams comes to OU as one of the highest-ranked recruits to ever commit to the program. Out of Washington, D.C., the quarterback had his pick of colleges. He committed in the summer of 2020, but that wasn’t the only good news. Williams was a huge force on the recruiting trail, planning The Summit for recruits in late summer and engaging with others members of the 2021 class. The Williams family even moved to Norman after learning that Caleb would miss out on his senior football season due to COVID, allowing Caleb to finish his high school duties online.

Career so Far

Williams comes to Norman as ready for the college level as one could reasonably ask for. He showed out in the spring game (10/11 for 99 yards and 1 TD, along with 5 carries for 42 yards), pushing Sooner fans to extreme levels of giddiness.

Highlights

This Season

The quarterback room at OU just might be the best one in the country. Williams would be starting as a true freshman at a vast majority of programs; instead, he’ll get to learn from both Coach Riley and Spencer Rattler in what is safely assumed to be Rattler’s last season in Norman. In 2022, Williams will take the reins in Coach Riley’s offense. One thing to watch: how often does Williams play in 2021? Traditionally, he would redshirt to save a year of eligibility, and he likely still will while playing in his four game max. However, if Coach Riley thinks it unlikely that Caleb is in Oklahoma more than three years anyway (very possible), might he decide to forgo the redshirt and play him more frequently for increased experience? Sooner fans will likely be rooting for that to happen just to see the electric quarterback more often in 2021.
