The Path to Norman
Pat Fields became a hot commodity his junior year of high school. The talented defensive back picked up several offers and began to be recognized as one of the state of Oklahoma’s best high school players. After almost another year, but still a year before his signing day, Fields let it be known where he wanted to play.

Fields became an extremely vocal leader of the 2018 class, deserving credit for helping the OU coaching staff land several talented prospects.
Career So Far
Fields came in his freshman year and played in six games, becoming a regular towards the tail end of the season.
His sophomore season was a big step forward; Fields started at free safety in every game. He was a consistent piece on the field, one DC Alex Grinch was often vocal in supporting. Fields earned honorable mention All-Big 12 selection and was named to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team.
Fields was a starter once again in 2020. He ranked 3rd on the team in tackles on a defense that continued to take big steps forward under Coach Grinch.

This Season
OU has two several year starters returning at safety – Fields at free safety and DTY at strong safety. However, there is certainly competition at the safety spots. Bryson Washington, Justin Broiles, and transfer Key Lawrence have all been working at the safety spots. Coach Grinch has routinely put his trust in Fields over the past few seasons, but this year’s competition – particularly Lawrence – will be hard to keep off the field. Look for Fields to be starting Game 1, but for the safety roles to have a lot of rotation throughout the season.
