The Path to Norman

Tanner Schafer was recruited by both Oklahoma and Texas Tech as a walk-on player. He chose the Sooners and arrived in 2016.

Career So Far

Schafer took a redshirt year in 2016. He played in the season openers of 2017 and 2018, but did not play in 2019. Schafer did earn a scholarship prior to 2020, in which he played one game and earned Academic All-Big 12 honors.

This Season

2021 started with the OU quarterback room going from deep to bare very quickly. Then, Tanner Schafer decided to return for one more year, Ben Harris and Ralph Rucker walked on, and Micah Bowens transferred in. Coach Riley recently mentioned that he is serving in a mentor-type role this year, working with some of the young quarterbacks. It’s a great opportunity for Schafer to use his years of experience for the Sooners this year.
