– Austin Quillen: Yet another OU Jr. Day attendee we have been able to catch up with who came away impressed. But that wasn’t a feeling unique to the Jenks standout, as OU’s Mike Stoops has been by the local football power a couple different times to check in with Quillen.

Most are projecting him as a strong safety type, but that doesn’t seem to be where OU is recruiting Quillen. Apparently, the OU coaches see him right now as a bit of a ‘tweener’, kind of similar to All-Big 12 OLB/Nickelback, Eric Striker. If you watch Quillen’s film, you can see a lot of Striker in his game. He’s tough, rangy, and has a nose for the ball. Excellent on the blitz, as well.

All of that said, he is definitely one to watch going forward. Quillen told me (Brandon) that he is a big fan of Kerry Cooks’ and is also really good friends with former teammate and current OU safety, Steven Parker Jr. In fact, it was Parker who was talking up Cooks prior to Quillen’s visit this past weekend. And the 2016 Jenks product came away feeling the same say saying, “he relates to the players well and seems like a really cool guy.”

He spent a lot of time with Mike Stoops, too. Austin likes his, “straight forwardness and intensity that he brings.” When I asked where he fit into OU’s defensive scheme, that’s when he told me about M.Stoops mentioning the ‘tweener’ comment and that he feels like the coaches are leaning toward him playing the OLB position. Needless to say he is hoping to hear back from them pretty soon, so he can find out where/if he fits in their plans moving forward.

– Jordan Carmouche: Last Friday the 2016 Manvel (TX) linebacker got quite the surprise when Bob Stoops and Tim Kish called to officially extend him a scholarship offer. Carmouche told TFB is was “a blessing from God.” He has also already set up a visit for the March 7 Jr. Day — which is shaping up to be a potentially star-studded event for the Sooners, by the way — so it came as no surprise when I (Brandon) asked him what he thought of OU and he stated, “it’s a great program with great tradition and excellent coaches.” He says he would like to visit again, after the Jr. Day, some time in the spring.

– Kofi Boateng: I (Brandon) was also able to catch up with 2016 the Arlington Lamar WR & recent OU Jr. Day visitor the other night. Among other things, he said that he really enjoyed his time in Norman. Outside receivers coach, Dennis Simmons, has been his main recruiter and Boateng says they have been staying in touch through social media. This past Sunday gave him the chance to meet Simmons face-to-face for the first time along with newly assigned inside receivers coach Cale Gundy and offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley.

Boateng said he likes the fact OU now has two wide receivers coaches on staff due to the differences in playing outside versus inside. He stated he got to talk with Riley, who let him know they didn’t get the chance to see him in person this past season but that they would definitely be down in the spring to evaluate him.

The talented 2016 wideout has pulled in numerous offers already with the latest being from Arizona State. And even though he left Norman without an offer, he stated OU continues to be a top school for him. He went on to explain another factor playing into why OU is one of his top schools is due to his teammate, 2016 OL Chris Owens, picking up an OU offer this past weekend. As well as the fact the Sooners have also offered another of his teammates in 2016 QB Shane Buechele.

Boateng also let it be known that OU is among Buechele’s top schools at this time. This news isn’t exactly surprising what with Buechele being one of OU’s early QB offers and his brother being an OU Baseball alum, but will be something to keep an eye moving forward with Lincoln Riley now having made a couple other QB offers.

– Trevor Speights: The 2016 McAllen Memorial RB & Arizona commit was an OU Jr. Day visitor that caught most by surprise.  The 5’11” & 205 pound tailback with impressive speed told TFB that OU just began to show interest about two weeks ago. It’s also worth mentioning what with his recent reassignment that Cale Gundy has been handling Speights’ recruitment up to this point.

Trevor said he really enjoyed the visit to Norman and that the facilities really spoke for themselves. It was also interesting to note that he told us he was with Gundy the majority of the day and not with newly assigned RBs coach, Jay Boulware. Speights said he likes Gundy and says he could see himself playing for the longtime OU assistant.

No offer was extended during the visit and Gundy did let Speights know they are being selective with the RBs they offer as the plan at this time is to only take one back in this 2016 class. He did also have the chance to speak with Lincoln Riley and said with the success he had at East Carolina, he believes Riley will be successful at OU and is excited to see what he does with the offense. While he is currently committed to Arizona, Speights said OU is a school that he really likes at this point.

– Houston Miller: The 2016 Keller (TX) DE/OLB was also in Norman on Sunday along with his folks. Up to this point, Miller has reeled in offers from Cal, Duke, Texas State & Vanderbilt. Bill Bedenbaugh has been his lead recruiter, but when I (Alex) spoke with him following the visit it was a different OU assistant, Mike Stoops, he mentioned spending the day with. Miller said he enjoyed seeing all the facilities and really seemed to be impressed with the setup of Headington Hall, as well as what the new weight room is going to look like once it goes from about 8k sq. feet to 30k. He also talked about liking the knowledge M.Stoops displayed when talking about the defense, and the two discussed how he would fit into things as a stand up OLB.

He went on to discuss getting a chance to talk with some current OU players who were there to answer questions (Trevor Knight, Charles Tapper, Ty Darlington, Eric Striker & Samaje Perine were the names Miller mentioned) and joked about being blown away by how big Perine was. Miller talked about how even though he (Perine) was wearing an extra-large jacket, he was about to blow out of it.

Miller also left without an offer but Stoops let him know they would be by in the spring to evaluate him in-person. Even without an offer in hand, Miller said that he still considers OU among his top schools.

– TJ Vasher & Zach Farrar: I (Alex) was also able to catch up with two of the bigger WR targets that were on campus in Wichita Falls Rider’s 6’5″ TJ Vasher and Southlake’s 6’4″ Zach Farrar. Vasher talked about getting to know outside WR coach Dennis Simmons saying, “he’s the type of person that’s going to be real with you. You always want someone that’s going to be your biggest fan, but also your biggest critic.” Vasher said Simmons let him know that he wants to get to know him more moving forward. All in all, Vasher said he liked what he saw out of OU.

Farrar, on the other hand, talked about how this Jr. Day was “much different than the other junior days I went to. They showed us a lot more and gave us more information.” While on the visit, he was able to speak with both Simmons and Cale Gundy. The 6’4” and 212 pound receiver said he liked both coaches and was also informed they would be down in the spring to evaluate him for a possible at that time.

From talking with some the receivers that were in attendance, it is pretty obvious the Sooners are being particular with which outside receivers they want to offer. After bringing in three tall WR prospects in 2014 and two more big targets in 2015, they obviously have that luxury to be somewhat selective with their offers in this 2016 class.

– K.J. Costello: If you missed it Wednesday night, Lincoln Riley continues to display the differences between himself and Josh Heupel having already made another 2016 QB offer. You’ll recall Riley offered Dwayne Haskins Jr. just a short time ago and the last night extended an offer to K.J. Costello (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA). We’re still working to try and catch up with Costello to see where OU may stand. But much like Haskins, he already holds a pretty impressive offer list in his own right. Among the schools are Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Stanford & USC just to name a few.

And as you’ll see from his film, there’s a reason why he has all those offers.

– UPDATE (10:50 am): Continuing with recent offers, OU extended another yesterday to 2016 defensive back Jaylon Jones (Allen, TX). For most who follow recruiting, this was an offer a long time in the making (maybe even long overdue in the minds of some) for the Sooners. So when we got word that Jones and Kerry Cooks had been in contact last week, it seemed inevitable that an offer would be made.

Jones definitely has legit interest in the Sooners saying, “I’ve heard great things about OU. I know it’s a great program. I definitely need to get up for a visit.” And that visit could be as soon as the March 7 Jr. Day, but at this time no definitive plans have been made. Jones also expressed that he is looking forward to the chance to continue developing the relationship between himself and Coach Cooks.

While both the offer and relationship are fresh, from what we have seen of Cooks thus far we know he will give OU at the very least a puncher’s chance in this one. – (Brandon)

– UPDATE (12:39 pm): Welp, this name is coming completely out of left field.

This is obviously just now breaking, so we are scrambling to try and get some background on the guy. But for the time being, here is his bio from the Stanford site.

– UPDATE (2:01 pm): OU finally announces an official date for this year’s Red/White game.

Nice to see Kish getting in on these kids early this year.

  • Thomas Lenard says:

I like KJ Costello. Throws ropes, with little air underneath them and seems to be right on target.

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Just to discuss the Bo Davis interest OU has I don’t see this happening given the fact he’s already making 450,000 per year.

  • KJ1123 says:

I like Lincolns aggressive approach. Instead of the “what are the chances” mentality, he seems more like “We’ll never know unless we try” mentality. Offer everyone you want regardless of the chances at this point of landing them. You never know. Offensive kids will take a serious look when OU is leading the country in offensive numbers next year.

  • Cole says:

With all the offers, which qb is most likely to be a sooner?

  • Boom says:

Speights would fit what LR wants in this type of offense. Also, Jaylon Jones is a no brainer. FS w/explosion & speed and a hitter. Josh, give us a little help.

  • Sooner Ray says:

I could watch Speights run all day.

  • ccmosaic says:

I wow ant Costello badly. That kid reminds me so much of Bradford and even a little Landry. Maybe not the most nimble or quick but he is tall, and has a great arm and touch on that long ball. I want him more than the others by far. This guy is the OU QB of the futurel

  • KJ1123 says:

Here’s a kid from the Bay Area. ZERO offers. Hes a big kid with a strong arm. His dad moved him to another school against conference rules and ended up being ineligible. He was part of Nikes Elite 11 camp. Not sure if he made it to the finals though.

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Have TFB spoken to LB Marvin Terry? I’ve seen on LT & also noticed SS has an article saying he’s been thinking about committing, i guess he’s close with Prentice McKinney.. Are you guys hearing the same..?

  • JJSoona says:

Wow, Costello is impressive. His stance and release remind me of Tom Brady.

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

I remember Heupel in the post-recruiting press conference saying, “Yeah we didn’t take a QB this class. But next year every QB will take notice that OU didn’t, and we’re gonna throw the ball a lot in Coach Riley’s new system.”

While I think Haskins ends up like Torrance Gibson (says he likes OU, maybe visits, but never seriously considered OU), maybe Costello or another elite QB will take notice. OU must have a reliable QB or this offense won’t work.

I also looked at the 2015 schedule again yesterday. All our conference games with no bye, @Tenn, @Baylor, and @OSU for Bedlam? That’s awfully tough, especially for a team breaking in a new offense, new DB coach, and a HC who’s feeling the pressure

    • Daddy R says:

Seems like a recipe for a championship season! Hopefully the adversity can contribute positively this go round…
As for the no bye through conference, I actually like that. I feel like bye’s always seem to kill momentum, especially on offense. So hopefully, this could be what propels the new offense to stardom.

Serious question: Do you think any of the 4 qb’s we have now, have a legitimate shot at running this Offense to perfection? My best guess is CT has what it takes for this O..

      • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

Hope you’re right! I’m a huge Cooks fan and believe Riley will bring fresh air to the offense. I also think getting Frank Shannon back on defense will be big.

As for QB’s, may the best man win. All 4 have their strengths, with TK, CT, and Mayfield being the front runners. I think TK ultimately wins b/c a confident, assertive TK is a tremendous QB. He’ll regain some confidence under Riley and surprise people, IMO.

Not sold on Mayfield at this point, but believe CT could win the job also. Very glad he’s focused 100% on football

        • Indy_sooner says:

I am with you on the TK thing. No data, but I completely think he keeps his job.

        • HoustonChiver says:

Don’t forget about Justice Hansen! Higher rated than CT coming out of high school

        • Hotrod33 says:

You make some good points. The only thing is he is injury prone and that is not good. If he could stay healthy for a full season maybe we would actually know what he can be.
I think we will struggle some early in the season unless we use Perine and the other backs to help alleviate the pressure on who the qb will be. The X factor is the defense. How will they play and will some of the freshmen make a impact.

  • JJSoona says:

I’m back after a self-imposed suspension from TFB after a Sat. meltdown loss to K State. Gotta have better control:-)

  • Stephen says:

Just for clarification, Dahu Green wasn’t apart of the the three Westmoore football players who were arrested?

  • @footballscoop twitter saying OU hired Diron Reynolds from Stanford as DL coach. I’d link it but on my phone.

  • SamSooner says:

Damn, Costello has great pocket presence. Now, as impressive as he is, who is number 5 and number 8? They both have good moves and can flat out run.

  • BR says:

Diron Reynolds the new DL coach?

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • KJ1123 says:

Hmmm, one thing about a coach from Stanford I would be unsure about is recruiting. Stanfords recruiting approach has always seemed to be pretty subdued.

    • he’s just been there for 1 year. NFL prior to that.

    • Daddy R says:

In fairness, must have really good grades and such to get into stanford too. So, his pool of recruits just went from little blue kiddie pool in backyard, to Olympic size.

    • BR says:

Being he’s only been there 1 year, maybe he hasnt subdued himself yet

    • JTrain51 says:

He was a defensive assistant not the dl coach so he wasn’t allowed to recruit off campus.

      • KJ1123 says:

Which is another point about recruiting, how much recruiting has he done. NFL doesn’t need to recruit, so he really doesn’t seem like he has much experience doing it. NOT TRYING TO BE A DOWNER. Im happy OU finally got a DL coach and a quality guy. Just trying to look at it from all angles thats all.

        • JTrain51 says:

I totally agree. He has nfl experience as “defensive quality control” and “defensive line assistant” and very little recruiting experience. He wasn’t even the dl coach at Stanford. I know I’m gonna get blasted on here for saying this but this hire doesn’t excite me at all. When did OU become a destination for on the job training. Maybe he turns out to be a monster coach and recruiter and I hope he does but it seems like a big chance to take on a guy who hasn’t proven that he can do either job, especially on a defense that got smoked last year and with a recruiting liability in Kish already on that side of the ball. I was hoping Bob would bring in a proven coach with an excellent track record. Everyone else might disagree with me but this is a total head scratcher.

      • BoomerDave says:

Do you know for a fact that he wasn’t allowed to recruit off campus? Perhaps Defensive Asst. was just a title and he was very much a full-time coach.

    • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

“Son, you want to play in the NFL? I coached there for 11 years. You come play for me and I’ll help you get there.”

Sounds like an effective recruiting pitch to me

  • Dustin says:

If true, welcome to the family, Coach Reynolds!

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

    Wha…?

  • D'Brickashaw Ferguson says:

    Boom!! Love the hire!

Don’t know much about Diron Reynolds, but he’s got 11 years NFL experience and more in college. That’s all I need to hear.

    • soonerinks says:

Agree. Strong NFL background should mean that he will coach’em up right. Believe we have the players on campus now that will allow him to hit the ground running.

    • Indy_sooner says:

Have you played against his lines?

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Definitely a nice hire, I was hoping for some NFL experience.

  • JB says:

Very, very pleased by this hire. Great coaching pedigree, including 5 seasons with Tony Dungy.

  • Randy White says:

“DLine coach hire is meaningless”, I think not! BOOM!

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m curious if he can recruit. Looks like he can coach but what kind of recruiter is he?

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

Ok, initial shock of the unknown gone.. I like everything I’ve read about the guy.. He’s got both college & nfl experience.. Spent a year at Stanford who does possibly the best job of anyone in slowing down the spread & from a 3/4… Not a splash.. But possibly the best hire that could’ve been made.. Bob has done homework..

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’d caution you re: his 3-4 experience. That was never a prerequisite for me re: a new hire regardless so I don’t really care, but from what I can gather he doesn’t exactly have an extensive background in 3-4 schemes

      • Jeremy Phillips says:

Stanford runs the 3/4 he did spend this last year there. Im sure he paid attention in the defensive gameplan meetings.. There are quit a few spread teams in the PAC-12…

        • Jordan Esco says:

Which is perfectly fine, but I think we can both agree that one year isn’t exactly extensive experience. Which was my only point. I like the hire, the 3-4 exp of whoever they hired was never high on my list of priorities.

  • RBear says:

We can call his DL’s “Reynolds Wrap”

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m not overly excited here. I mean I’m glad they finally hired someone but I’m just not sure about this hire. Cautiously optimistic I’d guess is what i am.

    • Daddy R says:

Any reason why you’re not sure about this hire? Dudes resume is pretty damn good…

      • Lane Gilstrap says:

Well looking on his resume he was asst coach at almost every job. Why not THE d line coach? Sure Minnesota did well when he was there… Look who was on the line at the time (Jared Allen). Maybe he helped out significantly who knows. He has had some college coaching jobs and I saw where one was most improved defense that year, so that’s certainly good to see. I’m curious to see who he has recruited. He’s only spent 1 year for a major power 5 school where it was a down year for Stanford. I’m just skeptical is all. I hope he kills it, but who knows we will have to wait and find out.

        • Daddy R says:

He still looks pretty young. Maybe the assistant thing had something to do with age. Not wanting to give sole power to a younger man, especially in NFL.

    • John Garner says:

Geez, what’s not to be excited about? Young, 3-4 guy, NFL background, Super Bowl ring, coached at Stanford so David Shaw saw something good in him. Probably the same thing that Bobbie saw: the guy can coach. Don’t worry about recruiting. If he can get guys to Stanford, he sure as hell can at Oklahoma. That SB ring will open a lot of doors. Bobbie did real good with this hire.

  • Jordan Esco says:

    update added

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Regardless if he hasn’t recruited that well in the past or doesn’t have much experience I’d say the best recruiting tool is just winning. Hope this guy does well.

  • JJSoona says:

11 years of experience…….impressive. NFL D line experience……young. I’m really interested to hear what Bob has to say about this hire. If this guy can recruit, all bets are off.

  • OceanDescender says:

Austin Quillen reminds me of a Donte Nicholson/Nic Harris type of safety. He looks supremely violent in that highlight tape.

OT but here’s OU vs AZ Softball: http://mixlr.com/arizonasid/

  • C.A. says:

this is an amazing hire so happy for the program

  • Jason Vos says:

    how old is Diron Reynolds?

  • Hotrod33 says:

Now that we have a complete staff it will be interesting to see how they bond with the team and what recruiting will be like. So far I like what the new guys are doing on the recruiting front and it seems they are making an impression with these young kids. I can’t wait to see the Spring Game and see how they interact during the game. I know they won’t show a lot of stuff but just see how they do with a limited playbook will be fun to watch.

  • Jeff says:

Ineligibility For Freshmen, what does everyone think? Looks like for all sports

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think it’s crap. Either leave it the way it is or if they really care about the student athletes make them all stay 4 years before going pro. No wasted scholarships that way.

  • EasTex says:

What a wealth of information this open post provided.
Hats off to Brandon and Alex for keeping us informed on these talented young players.
I like all of the recruit’s videos, but if I could only have one of the recruits shown in this open it would be Miller.
