Colin Samuel Note

Some of you may recall us mentioning Long Beach Poly 2015 cornerback, Colin Samuel a few weeks back (HERE). Samuel is long (6’2) and very polished cornerback that can play a variety of techniques.

I received a text from him this morning and he let me know that Oklahoma coaches have reached out to him. They are apparently reviewing his film to determine whether an offer will be extended but it seems their initial impressions of him are good.

Some may be wondering how a high quality cornerback like Samuel at such a high profile school like Poly (home of OU offers, Iman Marshall and Josheph Wicker) is so under the radar. First, because I know people love to speculate about grades (one of my pet peeves)…Samuel has EXCELLENT grades…so please don’t ask.

Samuel, unfortunately, didn’t have any jr. film for recruiters to review. Colin was at Alemany high school last year and only transferred to Poly this season. The staff at Alemany apparently didn’t keep his jr. film so it should come as no surprise that he’s very under recruited. Hard to get recruited without jr. film.

A cornerback with Samuel and Mbanasor would be a great foundation.

Reviewing your previous notes, Samuel has everything to be a good B12 CB, hips, speed, but is also likely a bit in the shadow of Marshall. Any chance of a package? Take em all!!

  • MrBigsby says:

Does he like to give a 10 yard cushion on 3rd and 4?

  • Zack says:

He does look like he may fit ou scheme. It looks like his HS plays a lot of cover 3/4 with the corners essentially being responsible for a lot. Would be nice if his interest in ou was enough to land him because I do think Iman Marshall is genuinely interested and if he waits too long, maybe USC fills up.

On another note, looking at the roster, with Austin, Stanvon and Tito waiting behind Sanchez and JT, and also M Green returning, and with the current offers all over 6′, and what they’ve done on the field this season, is it clear OU staff going a different direction? Wouldn’t seem like CB depth is critical.

Don’t know what to make of it. Might simply be that they really like these guys and because they’re guys who also have a number of years to play they feel like they’re getting the benefit of more developed secondary players that will also have plenty of time to remain at OU. Best of all words sort of a thing perhaps.

      • HoustonChiver says:

The defensive coaches do like moving players around, how many positions did we see Gabe Lynn in? Colvin and Demontre Hurst too.

You can never pinpoint exactly how a player’s body will develop nor how they will adjust to the game at the college level. Better to get well coached bodies in there now and be able to use them as necessary than to pass on a kid because you’re full at a versatile positions like CB.

  • Josh says:

I like the play at about the 1:55 mark. Very nice job on the Smash. Sinks to take away 2 then drives on 1. Good example of reading the QB while reading the WR/Route.

  • Josh says:

Great job at the 2:45 mark on the Arrow route. He is reading the QB while Reading 2 through 1. You can see he recognizes the route combo immediately and stays with 1 instead of jumping the out. This kid is well coached.

    • Super K says:

Indeed. Excellent eye discipline and had the abiity to drop and make the play. And you’re right he’s very well coached. When I first saw his film, that jumped out at me so I asked him if he had some specialized training and he said that he had a private coach that is now on the USC staff (wasn’t on the staff when he coached him). Very good eye Josh.

Thanks Josh and K. Great input on what we are seeing in these tapes. Hoping we can get some ‘tutorials’ on coverages in the off season from TFB and OG posters.

    • hemisooner says:

He has physical tools and comes from a elite program (good coaching) and makes good grades. Why not…i like this guy and PJ a lot. big CB that cover lots of ground.

  • Boom says:

K, how would you compare Samuel to Jordan Thomas.

    • Super K says:

Didn’t even occur to me to compare the two but they’re certainly do appear to be some similarities. Samuel is further along in terms of technical development. As Josh said below, and I noted in my previous posts…very high development for a HS player. Has a 3.8 gpa as well. To me he is an offer all day…everyday for OU.

      • Boom says:

I know a coach from Jordan’s HS and he couldn’t say enough good things about him on/off the field. Said he will be a leader in the locker room given time.

      • OU-Texan! says:

I would agree that Samuel is further along technically. JT played wide receiver all of his junior year and most of his senior year including quarterback. He only played db in 1 game his senior year. But shows you how good an athlete he is. He will get there technically….oh and he graduated with a 4.4 GPA with all AP courses. Samuel looks good and would be another good piece to the defensive puzzle.

  • M Shuster says:

When I look at the tape, I see nothing special. He is fast kid for sure. He looks like he can tackle and is pretty tough. But the play where the kick was blocked I did not like his effort at all. I would much rather recruit a guy who gives effort on every play. He wasn’t even in an athletic position. That kind of “I don’t need to exert effort here” kind of attitude is what we need to get away from. Look at Samaje Perine. He is 100% all the time. Give me that kind of kid! Am I off base here?

    • Super K says:

I think it’s tough to judge effort off a highlight tape. You’d really need to watch full film. But as a cornerback prospect these highlights show a very high ceiling and high degree of development. Add to it the fact that he’s a stud in the classroom and a very high character kid and you’re looking at a near perfect fit for OU in my estimation.

  • CS says:

like his discipline, shows a lot of coach-ability and exudes good technique.

  • Rene Goupillaud says:

Take a look a Poly’s coaching staff. I expect them to attract even more talent over the next few years.

  • Zack says:

Colin announced offer from ou today. Biggest offers outside ou are ucla michigan and boston college.

  • Mr. Jones says:

Now that OU has offered, what’s the interest level from Samuel?
