Bob Stoops On The Florida Job: “I’m Finished With That Question”

On the Monday morning Big 12 conference call, some yahoo from a Baltimore radio station came out guns hot with the first question asked of Bob Stoops and his thoughts on the soon to be vacant Florida head coaching job. Stoops’ response was pretty much as you’d expect.
“That isn’t something I’m… No. All I want to be is a candidate at Oklahoma. I’m not a candidate anywhere else. I’m not answering any more… I’m finished with that question.”
Alrighty then, asked and answered.

That statement is absolutely meaningless, especially with the season still under way.
true………..if fla. puts on a full court press he might go this time.
you can tell he is frustrated with the way things have turned out this year.
things seem to be at an impasse and stale. it seems he’s done all he can at ou and it’s just not working.
I was wondering, did Joe Paterno keep getting linked to jobs? What about Bill Snyder? He’s the best. Why can’t Stoops just be happy? OU isn’t some second tier university. They pay well, great recruiting, passionate fan base, great state. Why are they always talking about him needing a change of scenery? He has never been a job hopper still at his 1st job. NICE try Florida I heard beamer was looking for greener pasture.
I would have to have heard the sound bite. Based on the tone (from reading) it seems snarky and last year he was asked about openings and said “you never know”. Not sure if the snarky answer is good

It’s never really been his M.O to be so adamant against that question which he gets asked every year.
That’s how I read it. In the past he’s be more evasive in his answer. This was pretty forceful for Bob. Still…ya never know. Wouldn’t be the first guy to deny interest and have the van backed to his door a few weeks later.
Stoops is way more straightforward about most things than “those other guys.” You will notice that the “other guys” also denied that they had talked to anyone, whereas Bob simply says he’s not going to answer any questions, ever, about whether someone contacted him or his people about a job. It’s just a different approach, and, based upon history, makes it much more likely that he means what he says.
Maybe, I dunno, he’s tired of answering the same question. Wouldn’t you be?
I am confident he doesn’t leave for Florida.
I would describe it as agitated more than snarky. But whatever the terminology, Stoops was having none of it.
Let me preface this question with a statement: I don’t want Bob Stoops to leave. I think change needs to happen, but I want Bob around next year. Now, in the strictly hypothetical sense, should we be in need of a new head coach, who would you want? Two names I find very intriguing are David Cutliffe from Duke and Jim McElwain from CSU. Can’t imagine either wouldn’t jump to come to OU, either.
I love thinking about who out there has done more with less- because in certain situations that could be what gets you more here at this level. I certainly want Bob as our Coach- though they do need to make some adjustments- But for when the time comes…I would want somebody who has done more with less to come and do more with more.
I definitely don’t want Bob to leave, but if he did, I’d take either of the guys you mentioned…but I’d probably lean more toward McElwain. I live in Colorado, and have watched the transformation at CSU. That program was wandering the wilderness when he got there, and unlike Cutcliff @ Duke, he didn’t have the big conference to sell recruits. The only downside is that McElwain isn’t a young coach, so you have to wonder how much time he wants to stay.
Mybe you have heard of kirby smart of alabama great young defense minded coach.

Stoops has enjoyed moderate success at OU and has been compensated royally for the record he has generated. That said, someday he’ll tire of the job and retire or move on. Whatever the scenario, OU will have to look for another leader. The school was looking for one when it hired Bob.. If its sooner than later, good luck, Bob. The reputation of the school will attract many serious candidates and renewed vigor from a younger staff just might help the program to the next level—one Bob hasn’t been able to reach since 2000..The probelem for Bob and.or any OU head coach is acquiring enough talent to win the big prize yearly. The Sooner program is not that talented now ; maybe somebody else could do better. Maybe there is another Switzer just waiting for the right opportunity.

stephen………Since Bob Stoops became headcoach at OU, there have only been 4 coaches with more than one National Championship. If that’s your only criteria then I guess you think all other coaches in the county have moderate success except for these 4? You don’t consider 8 bowl wins and 8 Big12 titles better than “moderate success?” If not, all I can do is echo SoonerinLondon…WOW!
Maybe there is another Schnellenberger, Gary Gibbs, or any of the other medicore coaches Oklahoma endured.
Look I am all for changing things, and I will tell you I think there are some people who need to go, but call me crazy, Bob is not one of them right now. Beginning of the year everyone wanted him to be coach of the year. Did the team meet our expectations this year? Of course not. But 7-3, possible 10 win season, and people want him out? That seems laughable. If Bob does like he has in the past, he will probably do some house cleaning this summer ( I hope) and things can turn around. Montgomery, Bedenbaugh, and even Boulware have seemed to be some good hires. Now we just need a couple more.
We are SOOOOOOOOO spoiled having 10+ win seasons every year. Should we have won the NC more than once in 16 years? Well sure, but there aren’t many coaches that can boast the record Bob has. And not 1 that OU can get. OU is not going to get rid of Bob in the middle of one of the biggest expansions to the athletic facilities ever. You don’t get rid of your General(Bob) just before the final victory (Big Booster Requests to tie up the Stadium)

Moderate Success? Win the Big Prize Yearly?
Do you know ANYTHING about College Football? If a 10+ win per year average is
your starting point, I think the answer is ‘no’. Name a single coach,
going back to Stagg, that can ‘win the big prize
yearly’……crickets……Name a coach with the type of ‘moderate
success’ that Stoops has achieved…..crickets…..
The only 2 current coaches that have anything NEAR the record that Stoops
has amassed are Saban and Meyer. God Forbid that folks like you take
over the administration or the decision-making…….
Calm yourself. He’s good fishing from the bank, but deadly when trolling.
It just makes me fear that – 20 years or so from now- these reactionary fools will be running the businesses and government of this country…. searching for a reality that was never true to begin with.

If Bob should leave for Florida or elsewhere, that school is getting a 50+ coach with a limited service time left . Thats the downside of hiring Stoops away from OU.
50+! That means 5 more years and it is AARP time! I say get a grip. Everyone is different when it comes to age related capability. Reagan was in his late sixties (I believe) when he was first elected and I don’t have to look much beyond K-State for an older coach.
Or….if he coaches like Bill Snyder….he has 25 years left.
Bob has never come out and said “No, I’m not going anywhere”, but today’s answer was as close to that as he’s come.
I absolutely don’t want Bob to leave but i think its time for a change at OC and DC. With his personal ties to both that unfortunately probably wont happen. How awesome would it be to bring in some new blood at those two spots that can recruit like Montgomery.
