FOOTBALL

It’s Insider($) and it’s Mel Kiper, but for whatever it’s worth OU NFL prospects: No. 5 WR Dorial Green-Beckham,  No. 5 OT Tyrus Thompson, No. 3 DT Jordan Phillips, No. 4 OLB Eric Striker,

Really good read on former Sooners LB Corey Nelson and how he beat the odds to make the Broncos roster & is being asked to step up and contribute. (Denver Post)

Casey Walker making a name for himself in New England. (Boston Herald)

Insane.

The last thing in the world I am is a Clay Travis fan, but I have to give him credit for absolutely destroying FSU here. (Fox Sports)

Speaking of FSU, their fans are truly one of a kind, and not in a good way. (College Spun)

BASKETBALL

Very well done piece on former Sooner great Stacy Dales. (Sooner Sports)

How FSU is staying out of the NCAA frying pan is beyond me.

      1 – No moral compass
      2 – WIN WIN WIN
3 – Desperation to compete on a national level again as opposed to being a national afterthought.

What is particularly fascinating to me is that the case, let’s call it what it is, has gone waaaaaay beyond an NCAA thing. It’s clearly criminal. At least obstruction of justice, probably conspiracy and possibly even Jimbo Fisher and the President of the U in the role of accessories after the fact to forcible rape. And that, kiddos, equals hard time whilst wearing an orange suit in rooms where the doors don’t have knobs on your side. This is not taking a $20 for signing a ball cap.
And that is what newspaper reporters, without subpoena power, have been able to put together. Imagine what a police agency could do! And imagining that is what you’ll have to do because the campus cops and the local police force are quite obviously working the criminal side of the street on this one. And, so far at least, and much like our ‘zone read’ offense, the state investigatory organs have been non-existent and one wonders what opportune moment they might be waiting for.
So, why do we care and what can we do? Well, ask Frank Shannon, for one. He, and his team, are suffering for playing the game by the rules. If there is no delivery of justice, then there is very little reason to follow the rules other than devotion to ethics at a personal level. And, whatever we think of ourselves, it’s not hard to cast other someones who would not be so squeamish in starring roles in those sorts of ethical dilemmas. But, not being in positions of power, what can we do? Not much. But something. We can continue to talk about it. And hopefully responsible parties in the NCAA and Florida law enforcement and in Federal research grant decision making pyramids actually had mothers (unlike Fisher and the FSU Administration) and begin to feel the unfamiliar sting of shame and decide to take action. It’s not much, but it’s something.

Money. Think about it, outside the SEC, FSU is one of the NCAAs big money machines. Well it used to be and is becoming again. They want that back. But eventually the negative image will get too large for them to continue to ignore and FSU will get investigated.

      • j l says:

Not really though. FSU was 23rd in revenue last year.

hell, their football program was running in the red 3 years ago.

  • blaster1371 says:

This k state team will be a good chance to see what kind of team OU has. I hope to see much sharper execution from every position.

    • tfb_fortyseven says:

Sounds familiar … didn’t we all say we were looking at this for TCU? UT? As long as Heupel is at OC, I don’t expect much from this offense: keep turnovers away, and don’t do stupid, drive killing penalties. I do expect more from Mike’s D however: gel the secondary, pressure the QB, keep opponents run game below 100 yards.

The unfortunate part is that simply winning won’t get us back into position for a playoff spot. Did anyone notice how we didn’t move up in the polls after our win in Dallas? Yes, I’d love to be 11-1, but if they are all ugly wins (even against ISU, TT, & KU) odds are we won’t make the playoffs. At this time, having around six 11-1 teams at the end of the season is very plausible. We need to win convincingly against teams we should beat to overcome the new voting dynamic of the pollsters, or we will not be in the playoffs. Modifying the Purple Wizard’s existential thinking: “Our game against Kansas State is the most important game this season.”

      • SoonerfanTU says:

11-1 will win us the Big 12, and we will move up when teams behind us lose. Won’t really matter how ugly those wins are. We win out, it would take a perfect storm to keep us out of the playoff.

        • tfb_fortyseven says:

You mean, “… when teams in front of us lose.” It’s very plausible that FSU, ND, MSU, and Oregon will finish the year at 11-1, FSU may even be 12-0, and this does even account for the SEC teams. ND still has ASU, Louisville, and USC on the schedule after this weekend, so they are the weakest link of the four.

          • SoonerfanTU says:

Yes, teams in front. Sorry bout that.

We would certainly be ahead of ND with one loss. Their schedule isn’t very good. Same with Michigan State. And probably the same with Oregon, though I have my doubts as to them winning out.

Michigan State only plays one ranked team the rest of the season. OU currently plays 3, including a top 5 Baylor team. FSU probably goes undefeated if they beat ND. Be interesting to see how the SEC winds up, but my guess is they won’t have anybody undefeated, and maybe two one loss teams.

I still think it’ll work out just fine for OU if we win out. The Big 12 is the 2nd toughest conference in the ranking I saw the other day. Slightly behind the SEC, but way ahead of #3. Just can’t imagine a 1 loss Big 12 winner not making the Playoff. Especially OU with our solid OOC games.

The fox catcher movie looks interesting very different role than what I would expect from carrell.

  • Indy_sooner says:

I knew Jameis was a tool but whoa! I know alot of folks have their opinion of Boren/Stoops handling of Mixon/Shanon, but at least they did not cover up a crime. No one can accuse them of compromising integrity. FSU is just wrong

    • Ed Cotter says:

Remember early last season when he said he wasn’t going to be like Manziel. Wow, what a difference a year makes. Two peas in a pod.

    • Shelby is a Patriot says:

I’m probably the only one on here that thinks this, but I don’t believe FSU did anything wrong. Jameis is no saint and he’s messed up a lot, but there was nothing to cover up over the alleged rape.

      • Jed says:

The campus and local police doing an non-investigation and sharing their reports and the complaint of the victim with Winston’s counsel prior to official filing does not trouble you?
The delay of a Title IX mandated investigation for more than two years raises no red flags?
Can I get you to be my tax auditor?
        ;>

        • boomersooner says:

Yeah that article made everyone involved seem like they’re shady. Be interesting to see how it all shakes out. But if you’ve had this hanging over your head for 2 yrs, why would you steal crab legs AND get in some bb gun battle AND quite possibly sign autographs for money AND shout some obscenity laced YouTube thing AND whatever else I’m missing. Are you that much in need of attention? Are you bipolar? I just don’t see how you have any fans left

          • EasTex says:

Suiting up and going through warm ups while on suspension, thought that was a good “doesn’t get it” clue.

        • Shelby is a Patriot says:

FSU didn’t violate Title IX, they did conduct an investigation in 2013. Both the accuser and Winston, however, refused to speak with the investigators. That halted the Title IX case for obvious reasons. TPD’s handling of cases has nothing to do with FSU and is of no fault to Jameis. Jameis was not charged due to lack of evidence and the accuser’s story, which changed several times. It’s all just a media witch hunt.

      • EasTex says:

Then why did the two FSU players who photographed the sexual assault get punished by FSU, but not Crab Legs?

  • Jeremy Phillips says:

I’m ready for Foxcatcher.. The Schultz brothers were from before i was aware OU wrestling so, I’ve only heard the bizarre stories of this relationship.. Heard Tatum took an absolute beating during this movie too.. Excited to see it..

  • lovethemsooners says:

Curiously, what is the staff’s gut feeling on whether or not Dorial moves on or hangs around for a season at OU? I felt like we had a good shot before all the political stuff with Shannon and Mayfield went down. Now I’m not so sure.

That shark video is astonishing. So many sharks. In the shallowest places – where toddlers would play.

  • Lesslie Stanford says:

Another week, another round of being projected to be upset.

    • Ed Cotter says:

Amazingly Trammel actually has OU winning this week.

    • JJsooner1 says:

I hate this “upset alert” stuff. I hate 11:00 am kickoffs. This is a must-win game against a quality, well-coached opponent. Sagarin view has OU by 10-11 and OU’s schedule strength is now 12th. Phil Steele has OU’s Power Rank @139 vs KSU’s 132.

If the chains don’t come off TK, we could be the most disappointing 2 loss team in the country.

Was TK’s Sugar Bowl an aberration or is this a product of a philosophy change and new receivers? One can have all the talent in the world but if said talent isn’t exploited, its as if it doesn’t exist. I’ts like trying to turn a hockey player into a figure skater. Possible but hardly probably.

Oh AND I HATE 11:00am kickoffs!! Oh yeah I said that already.

  • JJsooner1 says:

Personally I think a U.S. Attorney(outside the state of Florida) should be taking a long look at calling FSU’s hand on the Title IX side. This reeks of a Reggie Bush-like catastrophe that will come back and bite down hard including NCAA sanctions and forfeiture of games, loss of scholarships, etc. Jimbo is a complete idiot for not suspending him and the marriage between he and FSU is on a collision course with nothing good. This says nothing of a very public civil suit against he and FSU. If they also find a conspiracy to bury this…..be somewhere else.
