I hate how Ross runs. The guy runs laterally, has minimal vision, and is not shifty. What the coaches are thinking absolutely baffles me, esp when you have a hot rb, who is difficult to tackle and wears down defenses.

Bell is another guy that I don’t get the playing time. He hasn’t done squat outside of the redzone. Not sure what he offers split wide on a 3rd and 20 play. Much rather have somebody that might be able to separate.

So basically we’ve reduced Knight to a Landry Jones without the arm strength or accuracy.
It looks like he is gonna run anyway. I don’t think he wants to lose. He might have been ok to sit still when we were stomping folks, but I think when the game is on the line he is gonna take what he can get.
In Knights defense, Ive seen him connect on more deep balls in this game, than i can ever really remember Landry ever doing in one.
I think the comment was pointed at the coaches more than at Knight

Dang, Baylor’s lone score in the 1st half wasn’t even an offensive TD, it came off a blocked kick. UT D is legit.
To me Baylor is another example of a team getting gobsmacked when they play a team with a semblance of a pulse.

Boykin looked a little gassed on their last drive after all the running he did. Hope he wears down before our D does.

Really want to see us get under center and run it at them with Perine. Defense needs to make a few adjustments. Sanchez needs to pull his head out and we will be good. Boomer Sooner.

Tcu is like a boxer who gave it all and couldn’t knock out the champ. Demoralizing to have that many breaks go their way and be tied. We didn’t play well and we are in it. And we get the ball. And it’s Perine’s series. I like our chances.

Straighten out the misalignment issues on defense. O-line will start to wear them down a bit in the 4th quarter.

we need the perfect storm of coaching adjustments, better play on both lines, disciplined play (no stupid penalties) and conditioning in order to win this
I just don’t understand 1st and goal from the four and you run Ross out onto the field and leave your tank on the sidelines. Then add insult to injury and get sacked.
Ross is good in practice and knows the blitz blocking, that’s who Bob always goes with. Sometimes it doesn’t make sense.
You don’t need to know how to block when they hand the ball off to you.
I’m not saying it’s the good move but Bob always says he goes with the guy that has a good practice.
I’m ok with Ross. I think he’s gonna show some folks that he deserves to be in there as well.

Overall, though we wanted better, this is at least what you hope for on the road, in a tough conference game, at halftime. Coaching matters, depth matters, heart matters. Time to find out for second week in a row just what we’re made of in all those respects.
TBF, TCU got a lot of lucky bounces and bad calls. They aren’t going to get that the entire second half. If we can start to get Perine going a little, we’ll wear them down. Maybe that’s the plan. Keep him fresh for the second half where he can grind them down.

This is what has been my disappointment with OU coaching…
Recruiting and development are great… in game strategy and ability to adapt to situations are subpar (particularly with my expectations for OU)…
Last year at Bedlam and Sugar Bowl had me thinkin maybe we had made some improvement…
I do think D is much better with Mike… I will join in the chorus of lamentations regarding JH…

Trevor went five steps back today, he’s an average qb that can’t read a defense. I also don’t under stand the coachs unwillingness to run him, he’s not a top notch qb. The book is still the same for him stop the run and make Trevor pass the ball.
Well, I’m drinking tonight and I’m not watching another OU game live. I recorded Alabama. I’ve had to Tevo every game so far this year and the Sugar Bowl. I’m bad luck. I’m on the fire JH bandwagon. Defense did play well in the second half though. So, I guess there’s that.
Were all of those comments before the game that there was nothing to worry about putting on a good face or what?
I think they came from us expecting to see the same team that played against Alabama. I guess our coaches didn’t like that team, so they brought someone else.
No kidding. I never partook of the Trevor knight kool aid. At his best he is mediocre and when he sucks he does so royally.

A draw? Really? With no timeouts left? What a great way to sabotage ANY chance you have of winning. I hope JH takes the SMU job, and I hope Mike Stoops reevaluates his strategy vs spread teams. We did this last game, rushing mostly 3-4 players and dropping everyone into coverage and giving the opposing QB all day to wait for a receiver to come open. The key to stopping this kind of offense is no different than any other…pressure the QB, dictate to HIM when he is going to pass or run, and you take them out of their game plan. I never thought Heupel was ready to be OC, but I’m really disappointed in Mike Stoops and his game plan the past two games.
I hope JH takes a job as a janitor and specializes in cleaning toilets. Cuz that is exactly what I think of him. He has a crap game plan 60% of the time and that’s 50% too much.
FURTHERMORE. The talent he has had to work with are what has kept him afloat this long. He is a Hack.
Next week’s game with a very poor offense is even looking interesting now.

we are a lot like georgia. we always blow one or two every year that takes us out of it.

OU is not a national championship caliber team. We don’t have a difference-maker at QB. We have only one WR that’s worth a darn, and both our CBs get burned more often than toast. We finished the year strong last year, and Knight played over his head vs Bama, but we aren’t as good as we hoped we’d be. Losing Aaron Colvin, Jalen Saunders, Brennan Clay hurt…a lot.

We came out in the 2nd half and ran it down their throats. Whats Huepel do? Turn a wobbly Knight into Landry Jones. I hope this is his last year.

Total D in the second half. Ours played well enough to win only giving up one score. There’s played a little better. JH just panics in big games though. He needs to go back to being a QB coach. He’s really good at that. He just can’t be allowed to call plays. If they’re going to stay with a dual OC system then they need to at least let Norvell try to be the play caller.
Baylor is going to crush us. Ok State might beat us too.
At this point, no team left on the schedule is guaranteed, except maybe Kansas. And that is effing sad

I actually think we rebound and run the table. Coaches learned for sure that knight is NOT a throwing QB, and will look to incorporate a REAL gameplan, actually planning for his strengths, and not being afraid of his potential injuries.
Well, (many) tears in my (many) bears tonight. Tomorrow it’s time to look forward though. 3 of the top 4 lost this weekend. This is still a relatively “good” loss on the road against an undefeated team. We just have to win out and hope Baylor and someone else beats TCU.
We would need someone to beat TCU, and then beat that team, while also winning out. Unless they find whoever the coordinator and QB were against Bama… Its not going to happen. I swear they dressed out someone else for TK in the Sugar Bowl. I will no longer drink the kool aide on this team until they finish the 12th game undefeated, until then, I am going to expect some asinine loss every year.
Maybe I’m wrong, but at this point OU is not out of the playoffs, and TCU winning out doesn’t necessarily hurt OU as of right now.

Knight is not a throwing QB, he’s a hybrid. We cannot expect to be totally dominant, until we recognize that fact, and I hope, the coaches finally have. He needs to run the ball, with a real option, “option,” and we can be extremely successful. We have too good of runners and blockers to not be. No more being afraid. No more “protecting” knight, or this team. NO ONE in the playoffs will be undefeated save maybe FSU, because of weak conference. WE still have a chance, and we may very well run the table.

I want to buy into your optimism. Its logical to think that the coaches will fix what was wrong today, and that with losses from Bama, Tamu, and Oregon, the race is still open. But I am tired of expecting greatness from this team and being let down. I will transfer my love of OU football to expecting GOOD things and being really really excited when GREAT things happen.

This was a loss by the coaching staff defense in the first half , offense in the second. Run the damn ball in the fourth quarter no excuse !!!!! Pitiful.
And Perine was working since the 1st.
We did absolutely nothing offensively that could even remotely confuse a junior high defense.
No Option, no blake bell throwing, no running reverses, 1 screen, 2 swing passes… ridiculous. If trevor had not connected on those long balls, his yardage would be like 50.
Offense was horrible. Come on Bob you pulled the trigger on those other coordinators…I think its about time for that again sir

Well, I HATE Kliffberry. But he didn’t call the nonsense that we saw today. Maybe we would have been better with a “Solid Backup” *read, threat to take TK’s job* in Mayfield, and for that KK deserves a solid punt to the groin.
Well, I’m actually not as upset over the loss as I thought I’d be. I suppose seeing so many other ranked teams bite it too helps. Now, Geaux Tiggers.

TK was exposed today. He is not a pocket passer and JH relegated him to the pocket. TCU did a good job flushing him and making him run to his left. Big step backward. Would like to hear Stoops say how badly he was outcoached in this game.
Now we see why the offense is vanilla as some have declined it- all TK can handle and even then not well.
Yup. Fumbles when he runs, can’t read when to bounce it, or follow blockers. Boykin certainly schooled TK today.

So many opportunities to put the game away. We have large problems with the offense and TK doesn’t seem to have any connection with any receiver except Shepherd. Slow to get the plays in due to repeated communication problems, even after time outs. And even the Hail Mary pass at the end was thrown out of bounds where no one could catch it anyway! Good gosh, that was just not well played in any sense, which is why it’s so damn tough. I thought we were better.
The delay of games drive me mad. Been a problem ever since “check with me” offenses were installed. WTF happened to a GD huddle!? doesnt mean you cant go fast. To me, Check with me offenses are actually slower, especially ours, as they RARELY actually line up and go.
No excuses for throwing a hail mary out of bounds. But then again, he threw plenty out of bounds.
I just don’t understand how all those WR’s we’ve signed in recent years, are so bad or mediocre. Nobody can get open and make a play except Shepard. I know some of them, most of them are young, but sheesh. TCU just switched to the spread, and their WR’s looked better than ours as a unit. I don’t get that.
I am willing to bet that Neal, Young, Quick, etc are just fine, they simply need a QB that can read a defense and check off receivers, and actually throw accurately to the ones that are open.
Too many times they can’t get separation. I get that you can’t always be “open”, but they are almost never open.
It would be could to see the break down of our route trees. We make everyone’s cb’s look like primetime.

yes, if you have ever played receiver you know that if you run a good route every play and never get a look then you have a tendency to slack off. i am sure most of these receivers not named shepherd are tired of TK not seeing them open. it gets old real quick.
This will be my one and only comment. I am done with the coaching staff!!! Terrible game plan, no zone reads with Trevor, but we will run him up the middle on QB draws? Defense with plain vanilla blitzes. Come on now!!! I coached for 30 years and that was horrible!!!

I think he did hurt it a little. But he HAS to be tougher then that. He can’t get hurt in every game against opponents who are able to tackle him. And many of his passes were nothing short of pathetic. He got sacked at one point by a man coming almost straight up the middle which he seemed to be completely unaware of! Unbelievable.
After this weekend it looks like we’re down to 10 undefeated teams, Florida State, Auburn, Baylor, UCLA, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Nebraska, TCU and Marshall. Have I missed anyone that is currently undefeated?
UCLA, Ole Miss, MSU, and TCU I think will all definitely lose. Neb prob will. Auburn looks really good so far tonight, but they haven’t looked very good this season.
If I had to guess, I’d say out of that list, only FSU and maybe ND will finish undefeated.
I see…. Auburn, ND, Baylor and FlaSt in the playoff as of right now. Noone in the Big 12 beats Baylor this year without a miracle. ND is just too good and would replace the shoddy B1G this year, Auburn Manages to be the best left standing in the SEC West, and FSU doesn’t play anyone else that can beat their brand of criminals.

well, damn him and his foresight. I am still of the opinion that the players can only perform within the scheme they are given. OU’s D is scary when allowed to play fast and loose. If they can pin their ears back and get into the backfield, we win. OU’s Offense is at its best when they make the run game work. None of that happened.

I think we have just been playing to protect ourselves. Example: Why give TCU the ball first. Why always defer? playing to protect ourselves. If you are truly confident in your offense, and you shove it down peoples throats in the first quarter, then why not take the ball first, and set the tone! scared, thats why. protecting ourselves from losing. Well guess what? thats what usually gets you to lose first…
I agree. If we are back to “dominant” “physical” football, then play to win, scheme to win, coach to win. This playing it safe nonsense is making me crazy

I’ve never understood it. He was a player then a GA, hired to coach QB’s (which he was actually good at) then named a coordinator way too soon IMO. Our QB play dropped significantly the second he moved to the press box.
I don’t like play callers in press box. different “feel” for game up there… Like, lack of feeling..
BTW, Gary Patterson CAN COACH. Man, I like that guy.
I realize everyone is down on TK. I believe his biggest challenge is looking-off receivers. He stared down one side of the field and threw into double coverage. Something just wasn’t right about him in the 2nd half. Not sure if he was injured or mentally fatigued but he was really off
Definitely something off. I’m not a coach, but I’ve seen a lot of ball and it seems to me like he honestly has a hard time reading defenses. I think it really is easier on him when opposing teams are so scared of the run game that they load 8 in the box, then all he has to do is be accurate, and even then he has a hard time. I am perplexed. Alabama’s Defense was no joke, and he picked them apart. I do not understand what he needs for that kind of performance.
I have been reading tfb posts for some time now and have seen almost nothing but intelligent commentary which has led me to keep reading every day.
However, the posts today are absolutely ridiculous. Fire the staff, TK sucks, etc. Wow! This is a great team that ran into a motivated top 15 quality opponent on the road. If you want to place blame anywhere it goes on the def. TCU moved at will and without the turnovers at the end this wouldn’t have been close.
I don’t expect any of you haters on this board the remainder of the season. Go find another team. This one is well coached, well put together, and completely capable of running the table into the playoff. I for one plan to watch that happen. Even our best teams of seasons past lost games.
The rest of you go find another team. We don’t need you and quitting on your team and staff is not OUr way. So don’t come back acting like a “fan” when number 8 happens. Go root for LSU or the like who are known for this reaction…..
Credit TCU, ABSOLUTELY. Thats not to say OUr team didn’t perform the way most of us expected. NO quit, just shock. I too can see us running the table, but not with performances of a team with NO identity.
Sure, we are passionate, and there is a lot of disappointed knee-jerk going on here as we vent to one another. That’s sometimes what happens. But we also SAW the game. There is a lot of kool-aide that we just can’t swallow anymore. Watching 4 defenders WAIT for Boykin to throw the ball, instead of going for a sack… see that right there deserves a little big of constructive criticism. Seeing TK constantly overthrow or overlook receivers… that deserves discussion. Seeing JH call a QB draw on 3rd and 4 with 38 seconds left in the game… that’s not being “well coached”. I believe in Bob, I believe in Mike. I no longer have any faith in JH in his current capacity. I am now in the “TK will never be Bradford or even Jones” column. That does not make me wishy washy as a fan, it means I have stopped with the endless optimism in the face of facts. OUr boys CAN run the table, they have the talent for sure. They CAN make the playoff, but now its more difficult. Just because those things CAN happen does not mean they WILL happen, and just because I have gone from expecting GREAT to expecting GOOD does not make me or anyone else less of a fanatic for this team. I hope you are right. I HOPE we do. But Im doubtful about beating Baylor and even KST right now, and Im not sure that even winning out is enough to sway a spot in the playoff. But then again, this is the first playoff, and it may be nothing like the final polls of the past.
i’m not a fan of the ones who are always saying things like “ou doesn’t lose to baylor” and “we’re not the same as we were under barry and bud” and “bob doesn’t know the tradition” and the like. baylor is not the team long ago that got beat by everybody to an avg of 56-3. things change in football, but one thing has always remained….there’s only one oklahoma

Only thing I would say is – who expected TK to be the pocket passer we have gotten spoiled by over several years? He’s a soph with a lot to learn…..of course he’ll never be Sam. Who on earth would have thought that. With time he should be as good or better than jones. And that’s plenty good enough to win it all with a dominant def (which again was not even close to there tonight)
It all stems from expectations. If we had won the Bama game solely on the back of the run game, if TK had NOT been the MVP of that game, then we go into this season with lower expectations for TK. But for 4 games we keep expecting to see Bama Trevor, and he is nowhere to be found. He comes out in spurts, and we get our hopes up, then he throws the final pass of the game out of bounds, and we rage. OU fans are clearly not as bad as Bama fans or LSU, or many other just TERRIBLE fans, but we can certainly rage over dissapointments. Clearly we all bought into Bama TK far too soon.

Maybe this is your first live game thread? There has always been and always will be meltdowns in a game thread with a loss, just the way it is. Doesn’t mean there are not die hard fans here who will always be 100% behind the players and the Sooner Nation.
In hindsight the pick 6 by TCU was a game changer. It was 31-31 and that made the difference

nah. the d played their nuts off in the 2nd half. they gave you the ball deep and 2 plays later, you give it right back. that was the difference. the 1st 1, the pick 6, put us down but getting the ball and giving it right back killed us….like rph is talking about

Pretty much the worst game that TK has had. He doesn’t see the open receivers and I saw Blake Bell in the clear several times while he was trying to force the ball into coverage. The defense was not good. Our line was getting pushed around on both sides of the ball, the secondary allowed them to almost pass at will and NO ONE will make Sanchez tackle so he grabs face masks. We say we are in a hurry up offense while TK stares desperately to the sidelines so long we can’t even get the play off. How can you not have a play and an alternate after taking a timeout to discuss it? Quarter back draw with no timeouts!? Overthrowing players repeatedly by ten or fifteen yards? How does a hail Mary pass give you a chance if you throw it out of bounds!!! We were bad in every sense so I guess we had a bad game plan, bad coaching and confused and ineffective players. What’s up with that? Damn I’m disappointed- because we lost with a whimper not a bang. At least play like you’re Oklahoma for God’s sake. With effort and thought and clarity of purpose.
Sad thing is, this HAS been Oklahoma for 5-7 years. Whimper, no bang. This is not a hurry up offense, this is a “check with me” offense, which unilaterally sucks.
You know of all the things Bob got from the ball coach, why did it have to be the visor? And not the ability to bench a qb!!!!
This loss reminds me of two things:
