It’s season opener eve! (That’s a thing, right?)
Couple quick roster updates: Devante Bond switched to No. 23, Michiah Quick switched to No. 16, Dallis Todd switched to No. 19, Jordan Thomas switched to No. 30. I’m assuming these were necessary because of special teams duties (though Todd’s may not be, or at least I hope not since my expectation was he’d redshirt and not waste this year getting 5-10 snaps all season).
FOOTBALL
The predictability of the national media’s overreaction to last night’s A&M game is just sad. Was Kenny Hill really good? Yes. Was it just one game? Yes. Settle the f down, fellas. Kenny Poise? Who do you think you are making up ridiculously lame nicknames, Berry Tramel? (CBS Sports)
He didn’t win anything with arguably the best player in the game, but now — again, after one game against an obviously WAY overrated South Carolina team (S-E-C hype! S-E-C hype! S-E-C hype!) — he’s apparently king of the world. (Yahoo)

Why was I not surprised by everyones reaction after the A&M game… Why can’t sane people just say, “Well maybe we fudged up the rankings and SC is just that bad.” Too bad we suffer the bias that ESPN’s love of SEC.
exactamundo.
Do you think if Ole’ Miss loses to Vandy next week they’ll call it “the depth of the SEC”? I’m just saying they usually forget quickly when one team takes a out of conference shellacking and then delivers it to an SEC opponent. If it happens you can quote me on it. 😀
Exactly. It’s rare to see a SC team this bad at every aspect of the game. Made aTm look like heroes. They WERE very accurate on passing and, with out being Manziel, Kenny Hill looked terrific.
There is a part of me that thinks we should do away with preseason polls for that very reason. Wait until week 3 or so to put one out.
Exactly. First polls shouldn’t come out until after 1 month into the season. The only reason they come out so early is to give everyone something to talk about and build ratings for ESPiN.
These people are just pitiful. If we wanted to get some love from the networks we should have gone to the SEC during the realignment mess. If we had done that, everyone at ESPiN would soil themselves every time we got a first down.
You mentioned sanity. I don’t think that exists at ESPN.
eh… good point
A&M had that game given to them by SCs pathetic offensive gameplan and even worse QB play. Their defense was gifted a much easier game than it should have been.
I think Spurrier hit the nail on the head in his post game, first thing he commented about was SC was over rated. Now obviously TAMU played well, but to act like SC was on their game is ridiculous, they looked awful last night.
On ESPN last night, while recapping the A&M game, they gave Sumlin credit for Sam Bradford’s success at OU. Heupel was QB coach and Kevin Wilson was in charge of calling plays in Bradford’s first year. Sumlin wasn’t even here during Bradford’s Heisman year.
Wasn’t Sumlin here for Bomar’s year?
Nope. He was WR coach/co-OC in 2006 and 2007.
Another bit of news for those who didn’t watch, Tulsa beat Tulane last night in a pretty good ball game.
Good for TU. I went to bed at halftime. Was it 2 overtimes for the win?
Yes it was. TU intercepted a pass in the end zone to end the game.
Oh wow. Wish I had gone now a friend had tickets but I decided to watch it from the recliner (at least till my eyelids got too heavy). The TU stadium will be sold out next weekend when OU comes to T-town. Probably about as many OU fans will be there.
It’s like a home game for OU.
One game Kenny Hill is the real deal, but, we have to wait and see if Trevor(Travis) Knight, can complete a forward pass again.
South Carolina lost their QB, and best defender in college last year, but they get a #9 preseason ranking, but, OU is overrated.
aTm might be a good team, but they played a team that had no identity.
Ironic ain’t it?
Ugly game at times. TU gave up A LOT of big plays on defense. OU should score at will, it appears. QB was up and down, but throws into coverage a lot. The little slot receiver will give us a nice test though. He looked legit.
That little receiver is impressive, running back wasn’t terrible. Neither of those teams were very good overall, just glad for TU getting a win to start their season.
The TU defense was gashed by Tulane running – imagine what Ross/Ford/Perine will do behind an OU line. As mentioned, #2 for TU made some nice catches from the erratic QB. Cover him a week from tomorrow and it should be a shutout.
Personally, I would like to see TU do better (EXCEPT against OU) than they showed.
It’s funny about the “future offenses of the SEC”. Big 12 has been running these offenses forever and they were “only good because we have bad defenses.” Ridiculous! Another thing I HAVE to get off my chest. Finebaum, a while back, said that the successes of aTm and Mizzou were because of better SEC recruits coming to those teams. Manziel and Mizzous team had players that were recruited while they were in the Big 12! These are Big 12 style teams doing this and YES aTm did this in their first year with Big 12 players! Sorry, I’m done now.
FInebaum is a dim-witted twit. What a tool that guy is. This SEC narrative is so played out it’s just pathetic.
aTm was better offensively then I expected. Having said that, South Carolina was horrific and has less defense then Kansas does. They were also out of position, confused and struggling to get the right players in the game, and threw a number of long balls that looked like desperation Hail Mary’s in that they were just thrown out there for anyone to catch as A&M did on one of them. Others bounced on the ground nowhere near the receivers or the defenders. It is hard to tell how good aTm is because SC seemed both unprepared, undisciplined, and even poorly conditioned by the end of the game. Spurrier looked like he had Tourettes at the beginning, twitching and slapping at his visor and probably spewing obscenities as well! Talk about overrated. They had no business being ranked anywhere in the top 25.
One game does not make a season but “Spewing Spurrier” is probably still livid. I am really proud of that SEC defense showed from both teams(sarcasm). Hard to figure if A&M is that good or S. Carolina that bad. I guess that’s why we have a season.
We saw one good “unit” last night and that was A&Ms offense. The rest was terrible. SC has some good players on offense, but the QB is average, at best and A&Ms offense was made to look better by bad SC defense, but they do have quite a few very talented players there as well. A&Ms offense will be good this year, but I won’t be surprised if 28 is the fewest points they give up in SEC play this year.
I was talking to a few people during the game, and to be honest, I don’t know what coverage SC was running cause they left so much space and so many guys in the middle of the field WIDE open. I mean SC secondary looks atrocious, their linebackers couldn’t find a gap between the lower and middle class, and their line made about as much pressure as a garden hose spraying through a tunnel. I mean one of the worst shows of defense I have ever seen. I don’t even think you can attribute it to A&M’s pace, that sort of seemed to make it worse but it was bad from start to finish. And their offense looked just as awful, couldn’t be consistent at all. A&M had an accurate pass attack but it is much easier when you are making throws within a 30 yard radius. I am not drinking the A&M kool aid just yet.
As I said last night, that was the worst combination of secondaries I think I’ve ever seen in a game between top 25 teams. It was just horrendous. Where was former OU commit Devante Harris? Is he injured? As bad as that secondary is, if he didn’t play because of performance, that’s pretty pathetic.
I mean I saw some things that were just those first week rust spots. But then I saw some stuff where I wondered if they had ever played football before. Most of the players on defense looked lost. Of course it had to be the A&M offense shredding a high ranked SEC defense right? I mean if that is a preview of all the defenses in the SEC, I am not scared one bit.
I saw the game last night and I have to say A&M looked better than I thought they would but for the life of me I could not figure out what S. Car. was doing defensively!! Holy cow they were out of position all night. Looked like a JH scrimmage!!!
South Carolina looked like they had no Schmidty..
The headline you will NEVER see: “Can Kenny Hill live up to the hype?”
