Sooners In The NFL | Preseason Week 3 (UPDATED)

Week 3 of the NFL preseason is underway with Thursday night’s game that featured three former Sooners, though none of whom played much of a role in the outcome. Lot of action over the next two nights however, and as always we’ll continue to update you here as the games wrap up.

Ryan Broyles (Lions) – 3 catches for 44 yards (team high)
Quinton Carter (Broncos) – 3 tackles

*UPDATE: While I’m not a diehard NFL guy, in following the OU guys as closely as I do if you have any questions as to how they are doing or their chances of making a team feel free to ask. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll do my best to research it and get you some type of info on it.

I didn’t think Landry played.
Yeah, I think it’s time for him to hang up the clipboard and move on to the next chapter of his life.
They’re still paying him to play. Why quit? That’d be dumb. He still can learn from Ben, he can still get better.
I don’t get why people love to dump on Sooners, just don’t get it.

I just don’t think he’s cut out to play NFL football.
He’d be okay in a run-first offense but asking him to throw the ball 40+ times a game—-in the NFL of all places—-is a recipe for disaster.
He did pretty damn well at OU throwing it 40+ times. I know he didn’t live up to the gold standard of a lot of OU fans, but he did pretty damn good from what I recall.
He may not be an NFL QB. He might be, I don’t know. I’m willing to give him a few years and a few paychecks to figure it out.

Landry Jones is the Emmitt Smith of OU football: yeah he holds the all-time passing yardage record but that does not make him great.
LJ is not even in the top 3 of all-time Stoops-era QB’s.
I never said he was a great, I said he played pretty good. Yes he has all the stats and I realize that’s due to him being a four yr starts. But he did have to perform to get those numbers and for the most part he did. That’s all I’m saying.
And if he can have half the career that Emmitt had then he will be an all pro a few times!!

The only reason LJ got those stats was 1) he’s the only Stoops’ QB to play for 4 years and, 2) Ryan Broyles.
Nice guy and all but if he couldn’t handle Big XII defenses without choking then he’ll never be able to withstand what the NFL will throw at him.
I guess I didn’t realize a toulets threw this passes to himself. Truly remarkable.
But seriously, Landry did choke, nobody can deny that. It’s funny nobody remembers his good games. FSU twice, comeback against Nebbish in championship game, epic win in Stillwater and WVU. And I’m sure he has more.
He’s not Bradford, I’m not saying he is. He migh not be an NFL QB. I’m just saying us as OU fans should have more respect for him and back him now that he is in the NFL representing OU.
Like I said, I don’t dislike the guy. I’m only judging him as a football player. Yes he’s 3rd all time in NCAA passing, just look at the other guys on that list and tell me what your evaluation is of those players. Timmy Chang tops the list FYI.
I just don’t understand why he needs defenders because he wore OU on the side of his helmet. People had no problem criticizing Gabe Lynn. If we have Landry in New Orleans, we lose.
You say not even top 3 like it doesn’t consist of two Heisman winners and a national champion/Heisman runner-up.
Hard for me to analyze him much in the preseason of his 2nd season, when he’s had no real experience, but I must say if I was getting paid millions to stand around doing something I may not be good at, I’d take it and stand there and say “Yes sir”, “No sir” while cashing my check. Hanging it up would be dumb.
Maybe not, but those checks still cash!
There’s no need to defend Landry, he has made his own bed. Perhaps we expected too much of him and that was our fault. Still to say that he just isn’t that good of a QB is not an attack on his character and definitely not “dumping on him.”
I’ve never seen anyone “dump on Sooners” except Aggies and Longhorns.
Using that same logic; there is also no need to criticize unless you are a Steelers fan, coaching staff or management.
I don’t feel like the above statement precludes one from being critical or supportive of any one athlete. I do feel as though Landry wearing an OU on the side of his helmet has colored their vision of his body of work.
He wasn’t going to play much, if at all in last night’s game. I would expect him to play in next weeks game. The game last night was more for the starters and immediate back-ups. Landry can still learn and get better. He’s got the tools…just needs to be comfortable. Ben didn’t even look good with that team last night.
The Steelers in general didn’t look good. As for Landry, you could be right; we’ll see.
I don’t mean to be mean to Landry, but I think he basically hit his ceiling in 2011. He is what he is now. I watched him in the first two preseason games, and it wasn’t just bad, it was ugly.
I think Jed is right, Landry may have all the talent in the world but if he hasn’t put it together by now, I don’t have much hope that he will.
For every athlete, the time comes when a decision has to be made whether or not the “self” should continue to compete at a professional level. That decision is different and based upon varying circumstances for each person. We all have seen individuals make choices to quit/and or continue when we as observers think the incorrect decision was made. When you are competing, only you as the individual knows exactly how your body feels, how far away you are from the top-tier of athletes in your field, and whether or not your own heart desires for your life are being sought. All we can do is observe and except what is. Just because someone is not in the limelight, does not mean they are not experiencing phenomenal growth.
Here’s a perspective for you. Gary Kubiak made millions (probably 10s of millions) as a backup in Denver over the course of many years. I’d say that’s a nice gig of you can get one. He was “never” the guy in Denver and apparently didn’t want to attempt to be the guy elsewhere.
Landry is going to play as long as the Steelers will keep him. His current contract is for $2.5 million with a $440K signing bonus so he is making in excess of $500K annually with a contract that expires in 2017. Hopefully we understand the economics of that decision.

I am a big Pats fan, so I have been cheering for Finch to make the team quite a bit. In saying that if they keep him, it will likely just be for special teams and as a change of pace back if Vereen gets hurt. his biggest competition for a roster spot is Brandon Bolden, who had no stats yesterday, so while not getting a carry he may have the upper hand in that spot.
Yeah, I think he offers them some value but they have similar type of players as well and I don’t think he’s really separated himself from them to assure him a spot on the 53.
He should definitely make it through the first round of cuts. They lost their return man from last year in Blount, and Finch is a much better return man then Blount anyways. I would not be surprised to seem them keep him as their fourth RB this year. Behind Ridley, Vereen, and White. He probably won’t get much run on the offense barring an injury. But He has been the primary return man all camp long.
Read somewhere he will be the primary “kneel down in the end zone guy” this year lol.
Would it be possible to do a Friday Night Lights version of this. Where you could post how Sooner commits did, as well as some of the big names we are looking at and maybe some of the OK Preps kids?

Williams might make the Miami squad. Voodoo named the starter for the Jets.
I’d have to really think about it. High school stats are much, much harder to come by than those from the NFL. So it would take a considerable amount more work to track down and when you start getting into kids outside of just those committed, you’re opening things up to a group that may simply become unmanageable.
I’m not saying no, but it may not happen this season.
That is fair, I was just curious. I know you guys keep in touch with a lot of people so thought it might be manageable.

Damien Williams is going to earn a spot in Miami and he looks in better shape than he was at ou.
Damien having a solid game. If he keeps running that strong it will be hard for them to cut him early.
It would be a shame if he doesn’t make it there. He’s looked good and he will probably get picked up if they let him go.
I hope he does, think he’s a good fit there. I was a little bit of a Miami fan years ago, don’t keep up with them any more because they have sucked and they aren’t on tv much around here.

I’ll tell you what if Bradford is healthy he’s got some nice receivers now that they’re a bit older. Givens and quick look like they’re ready to make an impact. Britt looks to be rejuvenated. And they still got tayvon Austin.
Yeah they’ve helped him with weapons, I just wish he had better protection.
That’s true it seems like they’ve got some guys they just need to play better. Long, saffold, and joseph are all really good.

He’s out for the season and maybe for his career. Terrible. It seems easy to suggest he has a predisposition but every time seemed a little bit of a fluke, nonetheless. Tough sport. He is a good guy and was a great Sooner!
I wouldn’t say for his career but he may have to be a backup somewhere and wait his turn but he won’t get another big contract any time soon.
There’s no way he’ll be out of Football due to this injury. It’s a torn ACL and it’s 2014, not 1981. After a trip to Dr. Andrews, he will be back by next season.
