Thought On Tyrell Jacobs & Louisiana Recruiting

Image via Scout.com

Not long ago Oklahoma picked up two 2015 DE commits in the same week, Tyrell Jacobs and Kenneth Mann. We asked our friend Dashone Dunomes to tell us what he thought Tyrell. Dashone is a former St. Augustine LB who knows the players and the landscape of Louisiana football, and more specifically New Orleans football, very well. He comes from a family full of prominent Louisiana coaches and ball players, and has been around the game his whole life. Having seen Jacobs on numerous occasions, and with his understanding of how Jacobs compares to other Louisiana talent, we were very interested in getting his insight.

OU has made a big recruiting push lately into Louisiana, and we anticipate that only increasing in the coming year/s. In fact, OU has already made a number of 2016 offers in the state, including one to Jacobs’ teammate, CB Kristian Fulton. Additionally, OU recently had stud DL Rashard Lawrence come up to Norman for a visit. And why shouldn’t OU heavily recruit a state that gave Oklahoma players like Frank Alexander, Rufus Alexander, or Nic Harris?

Louisiana is a state routinely loaded with talent. Most studies have shown that statistically, Louisiana and Mississippi produce more NFL talent per capita than any other state. And unlike states such as Oklahoma or Alabama, Louisiana only has one high major college football program in the state. Justin Reid is a perfect example of an incredibly talented player that LSU likes as a player, but the numbers just don’t work right now. And what really makes a state like Louisiana standout is that they are known for producing DL talent, which is something that has been sorely lacking in Texas as of a late (though we’re starting to see a reemergence).

We hope to bring y’all more and more insight from Dashone in the future. We feel having a native from ‘the boot’, who has extensive knowledge of football and the area is going to be important moving forward as OU continues to recruit the state of Louisiana.

Tyrell Jacobs:

Jacobs is a rising senior defensive lineman for Rummel High School in Metairie, LA. Jacobs recently committed to the Oklahoma Sooners and decided to shut down his recruitment in its entirety. He has starred for the Raiders defense during the past two seasons. He is talented enough to play any position along the defensive line; however, he is destined to play defensive end in the Sooners’ 30 front (3-4) defense.

Insight on Jacobs:

I’ve had a chance to follow Jacobs’ career for a couple of years and have seen him play a number of times. Jacobs has grown two inches over the past year and has also added some much needed weight. He measured in recently at 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds. This is far cry from the thin, lanky sophomore I met two years ago. In addition to his evident physical features, the Sooner commit also has fine tuned his game to become one of the top linemen in Louisiana for 2015. And I think we can all agree, you aren’t going to find many states in the union that produce defensive line talent like that of Louisiana. So when I say he’s one of the top defensive linemen in the state, I don’t say that lightly and it shouldn’t be as such.

When you first look at him, Jacobs is really lean for a kid his size. But he has physical side to him that can’t be undervalued. Tyrell has really quick feet and possesses that coveted high motor, something you just don’t always get from linemen. During his junior year of high school, he made a habit of tracking down ball carriers from his defensive tackle position. He is relentless in his pursuit of the ball carrier despite not always being in position to initially make the play. You can be as athletic as you want but, if you’re not coachable  then you’re not going to improve. In spending time with Jacobs and talking to his coach, you get the sense that he’s got a great attitude and wants to be coached.

The scary thing about Tyrell is when you get a look at him right now, you’re looking at a version of him that hasn’t been in the weight room recently. He lost four months of valuable time in off-season strength conditioning due to a shoulder injury. Heading into the fall Jacobs has to get back in the weight room and get stronger, because playing on the line in New Orleans is a grown man job and full time task.

Jacobs has tendencies that will need to be ironed out before he gets to Norman, and they start with his technique. As I mentioned earlier, Jacobs has really quick feet and will rely on his speed more often than not. This, unfortunately, allows more talented linemen to get into his body; thus taking him out of the play. Using better hand technique will allow Jacobs to become an even more of a disruptive force his senior year and beyond.

As I mentioned earlier, OU wants Jacobs to play the 4i alignment (inside shoulder of the tackle) and control the B-gap. At Rummell he lines up in a 2-gap control, and he obviously does well. His ability to hold up in the trenches is crucial to the success of the linebackers behind him and their ability to make plays on the edge. Which really gets to the heart of what he brings to Oklahoma.

OU struggled in the run game last year, in part, because of their undersized defensive ends. Jacobs is going to grow into a long 280+ lb athlete that is accustomed to eating up blocks like chicken wings if need be, but he’s got the feet and quickness to be a disruptive player if the coaches want to unleash him against the run or in pass rush situations.

Bottom Line

Jacobs plays with great leverage, but putting all his tools together will ultimately determine his success at the next level. He is still raw, but what high school defensive lineman isn’t? His body frame still has a lot of room to grow and add mass without sacrificing speed. He’s really the ideal player in OU’s current scheme. He has a great attitude, frame, athleticism, and what he’s missing is exactly what Jerry Montgomery teaches so well…technique. I expect Jacobs to have a great senior year at Rummel barring any injury or unforeseen setbacks.

Great write-up and glad to have you on board Dashone!

Looking forward to following Tyrell for the next 5-6 years…

    • Kody K. says:

I’d rather he ends up being so awesome that were watching him in the NFL in the 5th and 6th year. We can always reload.

      • Brian says:

That’d be great and all, but with the depth we have on the DL, don’t you think he’d redshirt?

        • Super K says:

The more depth we have at the position the more kids are either going to redshirt or be used very sparingly/on ST.

        • Kody K. says:

Absolutely. Give him a redshirt year and three years on the field and he’d be a redshirt junior. Don’t get me wrong, I love to see them remain the full term. I just hoping he is so good the NFL is an early possibility for him. That would mean he is playing like a stud for us.

  • Kody K. says:

Very insightful data on the value of recruiting in the state of Louisiana. Excellent!

    • Tulsa Terry says:

LSU got an Oklahoma kid last year defensive lineman. This year we return the favor. I don’t think it was a coincidence and OU still has clought when it wants to flex its muscle.

  • Zack says:

Great stuff. Jacobs has a younger brother who plays football also right?

    • Gary Robbins says:

Do you follow twitter? Read somewhere that K. Haughton waiting to annouce commitment after he takes his official visits.

  • John Garner says:

Thanx! Great read.I trust your evaluation and that of our coaches.

  • FeedtheMonster says:

Thank you very much for your great input to tfb. I am really excited about the focus on Louisiana. The only problem is that anytime I think about Louisiana I get hungry!

    • Super K says:

      Don’t we all!

    • Doobie74OU says:

Crawfish Etouffee, Jambalaya, Red Beans & Rice Let’s head that way now!

      • DCinAZ says:

Well now I’m starving and my lunch options are all sh*tty in comparison.

      • EasTex says:

If you ever make it to Shreveport there is a tiny little spot called Herby K’s. Their featured dish is called a Shrimp Buster. It will change your life.

        • Doobie74OU says:

That is much appreciated my wife and I are kicking around vacation spots for next spring/summer. I could just tell her a trip to the NOLA/ Shreveport area could be “life changing” and you know everything that has “K” in the name is dealing with nothing but quality!!!

          • EasTex says:

Shreveport isn’t much of a vacation spot, even if Herby K’s would be a great place to stop for lunch. It’s spittin’ distance from I-49 which will take you down to South La.
Careful though, those ice cold schooners of tap beer have been many a man’s undoing.

        • FeedtheMonster says:

Thanks. My brother lives there, so I will be trying this place.

    • Kody K. says:

Last statement is funny coming from someone named FeedtheMonster. Lol!

  • Super K says:

2016 Louisiana class is absolutely stacked from what I’ve seen and heard. People forget that north western Louisiana isn’t far from Norman. Obviously Shreveport isn’t loaded like New Orleans but still. Man sometimes I wish Norman was in Idabel 🙂

    • JB says:

I lived in Shreveport for a year & drove through Isabel a few times be grateful Norman isn’t in Idabel.

  • Fear The Magic says:

Excellent critique! Thank you for your very inciteful input.
I love the fact that MStoops is recruiting specifically for his scheme. That will lead to better and better defenses for sure.

    • Super K says:

Yep, identity is the name of the game. The beauty is we recruit guys that would be considered tweeners in an even front. So we can pick of talented recruits that may not fit other peoples front.

      • Fear The Magic says:

Exactly! Its pure genius I tell you!

      • JY says:

Love the shift in philosophy in the last two years. Let’s get guys who fit what we do. Where is our need? And let’s go get people who fill that need. In the past we recruited guys who didn’t fit what we did, and then got subpar results at times. Mike’s a true Savant, and with Bedenbaugh and Montgomery, they really go after this same philosophy.

  • Ed Cotter says:

Excellent info. Thanks for getting this out to us. TFB rocks!

  • Shifty says:

Nice write up…welcome to TFB Dashone

  • Doobie74OU says:

There ain’t no shame in the Football Brainiacs game! New focus on a recruiting area well then let’s add a contributor from there so we maintain top rate info by people in the know! Welcome Dashone & Thank you! As much as I love what they put out I love just as much what they don’t put out! They aren’t afraid to say “Let us check on that for you” they don’t just put out random thoughts about random recruits. Informed info about Recruits we know or need to know about! Hopelessly addicted!

  • JB says:

Welcome, Dashone. We appreciate your analysis!

  • Boom says:

Dashone, thank you for your insight as we always like to read from an educated eye. Curious, what happened to his shoulder? Thanks and we look forward to more of your colums in the future.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Staring out the window at work thinking back to The Boz’s comments a few days ago about looking in the mirror and applying your gift and being thankful for it! Do we not need a Asst. Linebacker Coach? I’m not saying there is but if there was any deficiencies in Tim Kish’s recruiting I would think a passionate former linebacker like this would be great on the recruiting trail! The Boz probably doesn’t want or need a job but a guy can dream can’t he!

    • soonernation says:

I heard The Boz say he wanted to go back to college, right there on my TV!!!!!!!

    • Kody K. says:

Great idea Doobie. Couldn’t they just give him a list of maybe five talented linebackers to go after and help recruit. And that be his only job to work on them. Not to mention, he’s a great PR guy for the school. Were onto something here!

  • j l says:
