Quentin Hayes:
* Q has been coming into a leadership role with the team, especially in the secondary. He’s vocal about how he feels like a true veteran and that some of the younger DBs have been leaning on him at times.
* Asked about making plays this season, “I try to make goals for myself and make goals for the defense. Trying to get more turnovers, that’s my goal.” And when asked about specific goals, “I’d be good with about six interceptions.”
* Also mentioned that Julian is working well at corner, and that’s he’s fitting naturally into that spot.
Dakota Austin:
* Asked about fighting for the corner spot, “Regular adversity. I been dealing with adversity before I got here, so it’s nothing new. We’re all just battling for it. I feel like it’s an even playing field.”
* Austin was super confident saying that even last year he believed he had a shot at the job, “I thought I would win the starting spot initially, you know just being a competitor. But it didn’t happen.”
* Despite not shocking the world by seizing the spot opposite Colvin, he did feel like getting in as a backup has accelerated his development and given him a real chance to be more of a contributor in 2014.
* In particular, he said he’s learned to play more patient and that it has let him listen to coaching and learning faster.
Hatari Byrd:
* Byrd came in beaming with confidence, and said he’s been playing at Free Safety so far and likes it. Says that having a real spot has made him feel much more comfortable in the defense, “I wouldn’t say I’m settled in. I can always get better. But I’m very comfortable about knowing my keys and coverage…it’s less about the learning now and I’m just out there playing ball.”
* Singled out a lesser known guy in Thaddeus LeGrone, “He’s a good safety…form tackler.”
* Also been impressed with true freshman safety Steven Parker and how fast he’s breaking into the competition on the back end.
Dominique Alexander:
* Again Alexander is super confident where the defense is right now, “We’re playing at a real high level. Everybody flying around to the ball. We’re really physical up front and our secondary is doing a good job on the back end.”
* On expectations, “I think we can live up to it. Definitely. Coach Mike is always saying we can’t get complacent, and we have to be a better team than we were last year. We’re all focused on doing that, and we want to be one of the top defenses in the country.”
* Alexander said that he’s “a totally different player than I was last year.” Said he’s stronger, faster, and smarter. Like Byrd, he emphasized that he’s feeling more comfortable and playing more on instinct rather than thinking too much.
DJ Ward:
* DJ was positive and vocal about feeling settled in at defensive end. Said he weighed in at around 265, feeling healthy, and had no lingering issues from the spleen issue he had to deal with last year.
* Talked a TON about the new hair. He’s sporting some dreads with red tips and being close to home, he visits his mom a lot and she helps him twist them up.
* He reminded us this was really his first spring to dive in since he was held out in his first year. Like Tyler Evans said yesterday, DJ has really spent a ton of time in the film room making sure he’s ready to put it all together when he gets his chance.
* On the Oklahoma Drill, “Ya I got a rep in there against Sam Grant. I did okay. Came off my hips, used my hands, and got the tackle.”
* Also mentioned that Charles Walker was “amazing” during the Oklahoma drill yesterday.
* Good things to say about Coach Montgomery and the D-line group in general, saying he keeps them all ready to play because he’s good about getting a lot of guys in games.
Tiffany Byrd (Nutrionist):
* Coach T, as the players call her, made an appearance and is as energetic and lively as any player or coach I’ve seen in interviews.
* She said she’s literally the only nutritionist for the entire athletic department, which means the ratio of food service to players is literally 1-to-600. Think that gives you an idea of how much energy she has.
* On helping the team “Fueling for the football team is amazing. They’re great eaters. When I came, the running joke was ‘oh my gosh all we eat is biscuits and gravy and fried chicken’ and now you’ll see that the fruit and vegetables go faster than anything else.”
* When asked if players were hesitant about her coming in and changing their diets, “Coach Stoops introduced me as Coach T and as part of their support staff. So the players were like ‘okay she’s our staff’…I said guys I got your back. I’m here to keep you on the field. I’m here to help you achieve what you want to achieve. Whether its to be a national champion, be an All-American, get on the field, get on the court, compete at the highest level and achieve what you want to do. Nutrition is part of that, and we’re going to fill that gap.” Even the nutritionist is laser focused on that title right now!
* When asked about how they’ve dealt with the heat, “The heat? No. We thrive in the heat. Hydration, cramping, we are proactive about that, but its not something that we fear.” She’s definitely earned that label of Coach.
General Reactions:
* Every single guy that came in today was just dripping with confidence. Whether it was quiet confidence in their ability like DJ Ward staying modest about the Oklahoma drill, or Q.Hayes talking about six picks. Everyone was self-assured. That being said, talking to all the secondary guys I still couldn’t tell you who’s going to be playing where come August 30th.
* Worth noting that I haven’t seen the players interact with each other in this type of setting as much as they did this morning. Usually they get dragged in and plopped down and swagger out when we run out of questions. Never seen guys wait for each other the way Dom Alexander did. Seems like they are authentically developing a tight bond with one another.
* The interview with Coach T was really illuminating. She, in combination with the training staff, has really seemed to develop an edge for the players and produced great results. It seems like a small thing, but just the way she talked about performance and expectations you can really tell the message and the mission of the team is ridiculously strong going into the season.

I don’t get it. What’s wrong with a gravy biscuit and fried chicken? Good stuff Cole!
Not a damn thing. lol
If you take my biscuits and gravy away and plop down a plate with some honeydoo on it, som’n bad gonna happen.
“You don’t never touch a country boy’s gravy biscuit!” – JY
Easy now…
Demz fightin words!
Never touch the biscuits and gravy. That is the best thing to eat in the mornings. You touch that someone is going to be gravy.
Then get your BBQ pork from night before and throw it in with scrambled eggs along with your biscuit & gravy, now your are cooking with grease
You try taking any food of my plate and something bad is going to happen.
Don’t want gravy on my biscuits.
I like soppin’ syrup on mine.
The Four Food Groups: 1. Gravy,Biscuits and Fried Chicken
2. Pie
3. Cookies
4. Ice Cream
I’d combine 3 and 4 bro 😉
Uh – you left out popcorn
Awesome to see LeGrone get some love from his teammate. I hear the kid is a hard worker, and he looked good in the Spring Game.
Really like how this team is coming together and displaying so much support for each other. It is really telling when guys stay back once they are finished with their interviews to support their teammates.
I sent a message to coach T on twitter a week or two ago, letting her know she has done a tremendous job and that the difference she makes is obvious. I think she is an extremely underrated part of the process.
Gotta love the Charles Walker “was amazing in the Oklahoma Drill” comment!
Yep. Can’t wait to see this fella develop over the next couple seasons.
Look at the size of Perine from today’s practice. He’s the same size as Earl Campbell almost exactly (he’s three pounds heavier than Earl). Let that sink in for a minute.
edit
Wow!
That boy looks like he could pull a mile long coal train!
I heard Samaje Perine uses his own thigh as an anvil….
Your getting real close to turning Perine into a Bill Brasky from Saturday Night Live.
Brasky has always been Perine. We’ve only just figured it out.
Nice!
Lol… Geezzz
Perine to future tackler…”sucks to be you!”
Heard 3 dudes bounced off him at practice last weekend. I know these Samaje Perine stories are starting to sounds like the myths of Braveheart but I was told this by someone who was at practice.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lEOOZDbMrgE
Great freakin movie
Not hard to imagine with the force those thighs generate when he’s coming right at you. He really reminds me of Earl Campbell. Samaje will move the pile and people will have to gang tackle him to get him to the ground. I don’t see many backers or ANY DB’s winning 1 on 1 battles at the second level against that cat. I can’t imagine having to tackle that. NOPE!
Oh shizzle, my condolences to the big 12 linebackers of 2014-17
I heard Perine was originally ranked in the the Top 10 of the Amway Coach’s Poll, until they were told that only teams could be ranked.
His legs are bigger than a guy’s legs that I used to run against in track meets, some dude named Spencer Tillman.
Can you imagine the type of success this kid is gonna have, especially in the 4th qtr. when defenses are already worn out!
They’ve already made a game about it, I think they call it BOWLING.
Exactly. We have always been a team that seems to settle in and see whether you’re tired in the 4th by running it straight at you. It usually works and sometimes it flat out breaks the opposition. He will be a load when every bodies fresh, so he may make a living on people at the end! Great comment.
Perine needs a nickname! Something like…… The TANK!
I’ve been kicking some around and I keep coming back to P Train.
How about Iron Man?
Like it.
Or just plain ol…. BEAST!
Or the Grave Digger.
Make it happen! Wonder what other players are calling him? Gotta be something.
The team calls him “Baby House”. I thought Shake and Break was also appropriate.
I honestly can’t believe a nutrionist hasn’t been added to football staffs sooner. It is a FUNDAMENTAL part of building good muscle and recovery. They clearly need more than one.
Agreed. I was screaming the same thing about a special teams coach for years.
Confidence, swagger…..Usually hear these every year. This year feels different though. I don’t know if it’s seeing how the team came together in the Sugar Bowl, or just really wanting the chase for 8 to turn into the “Time for 9”. It just feels different, genuine, dare I say special.
For me, it’s about the overall team attitude and the work ethic displayed in the offseason. There’s a focus and a discipline about this team we haven’t had here in a while.
I can agree with that. Just a new fire has been lit, don’t know who started it but it sure is bright.
I think the coaching changes Did it along with the locker room cleansing.
This. I think even the change in GAs as well has improved the chemistry
If Charles walker plays half as scary as he looks (and I think he will) I feel sorry for the poor sole lined up opposite of him all game… there will be a lot of faked cramps, stingers, it will look like me getting tired and coming up lame on the 400 meter…I’m to old for this riggs
Like most players it’ll take some time for the game to slow down but once he starts to see things he’s gonna be really fun to watch.
I feel like when the game does slow down he has the size, strength, and get off to be very special player.. Maybe as good as we’ve had and we’ve had some good ones!
I keep seeing his name along with words like “amazing” even from the other players. It’s going to be flat out exciting to see what he can do!
Hungry, focused, team, these words describe the feeling I get about this team.
I think I could use Coach T at my house.
comment of the day!
Hey brainiacs and fellow Sooner FANatics. Quick question guys, please correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t Julian Wilson initially recruited to play corner or am I thinking of someone else? And is Thaddeus LeGrone a walk-on? Again, I always say it and you guys might get tired of hearing it but love the site and thoroughness you brainiacs put into it.
yes on the first, to my knowledge and I think so to the second.
‘Preciate it Jed.
You are right on both. LaGrone is a walk-on, but also a former scholarship player at Houston.
Thanks Jordan…when are we gonna see the Zack Morris avatar at the top of the brainiac webpage? 😉
You are correct on the first Jed. Bob mentioned in his post practice yesterday.
Gotcha
Right at the bleeding edge of my memory….
I’m pretty sure LeGrone is a walk-on. I do remember him delivering a blow to Connor Knight in the spring game, after which Knight got up slowly.
Stoops said that Julian was recruited to play corner. Of course, he would know best. I recall that Julian was recruited to play safety. Perhaps he was recruited to play either safety or corner. They didn’t try him out at corner first, however.
Man I can’t wait, these next few weeks are going to go slow. This D has a chance to be special if they continue to build off the momentum they had last year.
Welcome back old friend!

A comment from the forums S/O to CrimsonOberon
“The Football Brainiacs are the Eric Striker of free sites. They just drill the other sites into the ground and walk away with their helmet off like a boss.”
I seen that and laughed out loud. It will get some likes but some will have to hate on it also.
This question may have been answered already, what kind of speed and lateral quickness does Perine have?
Supposedly he runs a 4.41 40.
I’m so old I can remember when there were linemen his size! Amazing!
The kind you get out of the way of.
The kind that doesn’t matter cause he’s running straight through anyone in his way.
The question is… how much lateral quickness do defenders have to save themselves?
This video might help your question.
I see why Perine came in the same class as Mixon. He ain’t afraid of competition. He ain’t afraid of sh*t.
About as complete a RB as I have ever seen.
I don’t think he is afraid of sh0ts, either. :}
Great vision, soft hands, can cut on a dime with balance, tough downhill runner, runs away from corners and safeties like they’re LB’s, knows how to get down when a play is over, great ball security……..what more could you ask for????
Really nice work Cole………..welcome!!
It may well be that Tiffany Byrd had a hand in making Coach Schmidt satisfied at the end of the summer for perhaps the first time in years! It goes without saying that nutrition and fitness go hand in hand. Not that I have ever personally embraced the nutrition part of the equation LOL.
That’s some excellent takeaways from practice- quotes are all very encouraging.
