Happy Friday!
OU is going to have a number of visitors on campus this weekend. We’ll go through the ones we’ve been able to confirm:
– Malik Jefferson & DeAndre McNeal: Earlier this week we told y’all there was a possibility Malik Jefferson and McNeal would be making it to Norman this weekend for a visit (HERE). Last night Jefferson confirmed via Twitter that he will indeed be making the trip. We checked in with McNeal to see if had decided whether he was going as well, and as of last night he said he was “still deciding.” But with Malik coming up, one would think the chances of McNeal making it would be pretty high.
We’ve long believed that Malik was sure to either end up at Texas or Texas A&M. Those are still the most likely two schools, but you can’t compete for elite players like Malik if you can’t at least get them on campus. So this is definitely a step in the right direction.
– Clark Yarbrough: 2016 OT Clark Yarbrough will be on campus Sunday, August 3rd.
– Will Sunderland: Like Jefferson, Will tweeted out last night that he too will be down in Norman this weekend.
– PJ Mbanasor: The OU commit will be back in Norman for a third time. With all the talent that will be on campus, having an outspoken OU commit like PJ there can’t hurt!
– Darius Anderson: 2016 DT Darius Anderson out of the Houston area will be in Norman this weekend as well.
– Erick Fowler: One of our absolute favorite 2016 prospects, Erick Fowler (Manor, TX), will make his first trip up to Norman this weekend as well. Last April, when we highlighted Fowler on the site (here), he only had one offer. Now, he holds offers from UCLA, Nebraska, Baylor, Kentucky, and he hasn’t even started his jr. season. And trust us, before it’s all said and done he’ll have offers from just about everyone in the country.
His balance, bend, relentlessness, and explosiveness give him elite pass rushing ability. And he’s the kind of stand up, edge rusher that OU needs to make their defense go. Fowler is going to be one of the most sought after recruits in the 2016 class, and don’t be surprised if he leaves campus with an OU offer this weekend.
– Others: As we mentioned earlier in the week, there will be at least one other talented visitor in Norman. He mentioned to us he was coming, but asked that we not put that information out. There may (likely will) also be other visitors that we haven’t heard from yet, but as we get word about them we will update this post.
Jaylon Lane: No, Jaylon won’t be on campus this weekend. But I know many of you have been curious about whether or not OU is still recruiting him. The answer to that question is definitely yes. OU has always been a school of interest to Jaylon, and it seems the OU staff believes if they can just get him on campus at some point during the recruiting process then all bets are off. Right now he’s solid to OSU, but since when has OU ever backed down from that type of orange obstacle? Since never, that’s when!
Cassius Peat: Caught up with 2015 Arizona LB Cassius Peat last night. He had long intended to take an unofficial visit to OU this summer, but told us that trip isn’t going to happen. He did say, however, that he will take an official visit to OU. He also told us that he will “be visiting more than once though, between now and my decision.” So it sounds like Cassius is still intent on not only seeing OU, but trying to make two trips this way. He will be visiting Texas A&M this coming weekend.
First Day Practice Note: Yesterday morning Oklahoma had their first fall practice of the 2014 season. The early word we got is that it was a typical practice, where they’re just trying to get back into the flow of things. We were told that despite Keith Ford having the most game experience out of the RBs, he came in yesterday practicing like he was the underdog. He is absolutely determined to leave no doubt and win that starting job. He’s not leaving anything to chance.
We were also told that the team in general came in a little scrappier than usual for a first practice…just overall, fired up. There seems to be a lot of focus as the guys really want to go into this season and prove that the Alabama game last year was no fluke. And that it wasn’t a case of one team laying down for the other, as they’ve heard so many times throughout the offseason. They want to prove they are the real deal.
In a nutshell, the word we got is that this is just a hard working group that, despite the preseason hype, still seems to have a chip on their shoulder.
Comment of the Week: There were A LOT of good ones by y’all, but we gotta give it to Shifty. If you missed it, Shifty referenced the play JY mentioned in the Trench Warfare segment this week where OT Darryl Williams was lined up in the slot and he said:
“Another selling point to OTs would be ‘you might get to play some slot'”
That comment actually got RT’d by Darryl Williams himself on the TFB Twitter account!
We’ll have to come up with some kind of a prize for “Comment of the Week” but for now, Shifty, you’ll have to settle for an atta boy!
Media Event: We have another new contributor who we will introduce y’all to soon. He will be at the media events on Saturday, and we’re hopeful he will be able to bring y’all some notes and quotes from this weekend.

– UPDATE (Fri., 10:30 am): 2016 stud OT, Clark Yarbrough is actually coming in on Saturday. He’ll be on campus late Saturday afternoon and evening, and he’ll be there all day on Sunday. So OU is going to have plenty of time with Yarbrough.
– UPDATE (Fri., 6:54 pm): Kahlil Haughton just tweeted out that he’ll be announcing his commitment next Friday. He will decide between OU, Baylor, Texas Tech, Duke and Arkansas!
– UPDATE (Fri., 8:25 pm): OU just offered OT JP Urquidez. JP holds a number of offers including schools like Texas, LSU, Florida State and others. Just asked JP if he’s going to take an official to OU and he said, “of course…they (OU) just changed the game”
– UPDATE (Fri., 9:35 pm): Earlier this week John Humphrey was scheduled to make it to Norman this weekend but cancelled the trip. Well good news! The trip is back on. He just let us know that he will be in Norman tomorrow!
– UPDATE (Sat., 9:24 am): As already noted in the comments below, 2015 OT and former OU commit Josh Wariboko is also expected to be in Norman this weekend.
– UPDATE (Sat., 3:07 pm): We’ll have something up here in a bit from the OU media day, but in the meantime wanted to make sure nobody missed this news item. Bob Stoops said today that DE/OLB Michael Onuoha will not be with the team this year due to academics.
– UPDATE (Sat., 4:33 pm): OU has picked up another 2015 commitment in WR John Humphrey. We’ll have more soon, just wanted to get this up so you all were aware.
– UPDATE (Sun., 1:33 pm): OU has offered 2016 LB & weekend visitor Erick Fowler.

With modern materials and design, along with the ability to monitor impacts and head movement, I like the potential of this helmet.
That is the one area of litigation that concerns me for the future of football, the helmet manufacturers being sued into oblivion.

Haughton coming to campus this weekend too, imagine both Haughton and Sunderland committing this weekend!
Well I think haughton is going to commit around the end of august. And Sunderland is going to wait to announce his commitment in January but right now he’s basically committed.
However I have a feeling haughton ends up at tech.
I think it’s Baylor or us.

What a great idea for recruiting. Just have a very long hallway that the recruits can walk through and have large color framed posters of every OU player during Stoops tenure in their NFL uniforms ( an action shot would work well ). Psychologically that has to say Come to OU and you’ll be on this wall at some point in time.
Glad to see a big weekend is on tap! I’m not seeing anyone come in that might give us a commitment on the spot, but it’s great to get them on campus. You guys know of anyone that should put us on commit watch?
It is telling that Peat is going all the way to aTm on an unofficial, but can’t make it to OU yet. Not saying this one is over by any means, but these types of things usually mean something in the recruiting process no doubt.
Scrappy is an understatement. I heard Coach Stoops and Coach Heup were shirtless and challenging anyone and everyone to a bare knuckle boxing match!

Not for this season if he can’t qualify there with a school who probably pulls every string for big time players, then he wouldn’t qualify here.
Not true. There are a couple weird things the SEC does that sometimes bite incoming freshman. We got a LB from FL a couple years ago that got hit by the SEC requirements.
Not to slag on any school, but both my nephews went to highschool in Florida. When one of their friends was having trouble getting accepted to college, the guidance counselor directed him to Alabama on the grounds that ‘if you can fog a mirror, you’re in at Alabama”.

Didn’t he come to OU as a RB?
Yes, but really he was an athlete by today’s standard. Shoate changed the position with his speed and not for OU but for college football. I was 13 and loved the Selmons but I watched Shoate he made an impact on my life. So much that I worked my tail off to become a LB.
He was a joy to watch while he worked.
Before that time my ideal LB had been the Dick Butkus, Sam Huff, Ray Nitsche types. Then came the Jerry Tubbs/Lee Roy Jordan type LB, what a great player. Met him a few years ago, he still has a business here in Dallas, but spends most of his time in Jacksonville, Fla. playing golf. His eyes still have that LB twinkle when you talk football.

Marshall… I knew there was a significant town I was forgetting. I lived in Shreveport & for others reading this who don’t know, Longview, Marshall, Texarkana are all part of the Shreveport viewing area. Forgetting Marshall was inexcusable…my bad.
I lived in S’port for a year, and drove to Tulsa & Dallas to visit the relatives. I learned a lot of east Texas towns by trying alternate routes to Tulsa. I also had patients who drove from east Texas to Shreveport, one drove all the way from Carthage to see me.
Born in Shreveport and lived in the “Ark-La-Tex” until I left home after high school.
Still have a lot out on Caddo Lake, it is my sanctum sanctorum.
Coming from that area to Tulsa there isn’t but one way…Indian Nation Turnpike.
Hearing ArkLaTex is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me!!! Ulimately, yes, I ended up on Indian Nation Turnpike, but the routes getting to it through NE Texas, SW Arkansas and NW Louisiana are multiple. I think I tried every one of them!
Better Caddo Lake than Cross…they told me Cross had gators in it when I lived there.
I used to live in a house on River Road (Shreve Island neighborhood). Nearest major intersection was Youree Drive and E King’s HWY/Shreveport-Barksdale HWY.
We got gators in Caddo, too, along with an assortment of many different other species.
Been down the King’s highway many times. Loved the dry aged beef and lasagna at Broccato’s. Been all over your old neighborhood, had friends and family scattered up and down Youree and Line Ave.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine ranked Marshall vs Longview as the number one rivalry in the state.

They shall see the truth there shall be no mercy. Change of subject I have to say reading T Gibson, comments on how urban lead tebow to a hiesman, being left handed and all. He’s confused with all this technology he looses the truth “OKLAHOMA” home of the hiesman track record shows. First he was with Tennessee for a week and camped there. Could he be our secret guest. What do you all think?
Gibson really needs someone with a broader view to be in his ear. OU is the best place for someone who wants to truly develop as a throwing QB. I absolutely agree with you.
Gotta love all these talented recruits coming to Norman. I’ve always thought Norman was in the top 5 nationally for a college city. Its so comfy and yet has a strong flair of big time feel. Not to mention OKC is so close. You have to get them to Norman to have a chance!!

Seems to have long arms too! I love NG that are a bit shorter with lower centers of gravity but long arms and strong hands allow them to shed blocks well! Plus as you said he has 2 years of growing before he can sign a LOI!
They grow some biguns down in Monroe, La. Those folks in that area are pulp wooders. The biggest “guns” I ever saw on a human being was a fella in NW La. that was an independent logger and he would contract with my grandparents for pine trees on their farm. He would cut them, trim them and load his log truck by himself. I would stand there and watch him as he tightened the chains on the logs before he drove off. Those trees and chains would have broken before his arms or back.
I’m from SE Oklahoma and they would say, gotta hual my pup wood.

Is there any truth to the story the Oklahoman reported about DGB being eligible this season?
This is the first I’ve heard of such a report.
I think that article was saying that OU officials were optimistic about DGB getting a waiver. As far as i know they still haven’t even filed for the waiver cause they are still waiting on paperwork from Mizzou
I believe the article was saying that sources say they feel confident that there is a good chance he could be deemed eligible but it hasnt been decided yet.
I haven’t heard anything on Jordan Phillips? I know it’s just shorts and helmets so I’m not worried about how he is playing but is everyone healthy and practicing? Everyone that didn’t play in the Spring?

It’s a new day and I now understand what you are saying, I still had my work goggles on last night and the Sunday threw me off since the NFL presented by Hollywood doesn’t interest me. For me it’s all about Friday and Saturday, and my season begins on Friday 29 Aug 14 in Royse City, Tx.

If Mayfield is ruled eligible that would give both backups a little more push but I still expect Cody to win out…I liked how Mayfield looked in SG doe..He has nice composer and a nice all around game…Cody has been in the system two years now and that’s where I give him the edge (from the outside looking in)
If Baker Mayfield becomes eligible, I would bet he’ll earn the nod at 2nd string. It isn’t in Bob Stoops’ nature to play a guy who’s been in the system longer, it’s to play the guy who performs the best. I’ve read that Mayfield learned the offense quickly. We saw how well he played in the Spring, and he has D-1 starting (and winning) experience.
Plus, I think Mayfield has that “it” factor working in his favor. He’s a winner who did pretty well at TTU, imagine what he could do surrounded by OU’s talent.
You very well could be right but you could be wrong too…Take SG with a grain of salt..we’ve seen guys star in the SG yet never see the field come the season…btw the way he looked so good in the SG going against our 2s and 3s…he still looked good and completed his passes doe…he very well could get the back up spot but then again I’m not gonna write off Cody just yet…imo he is silently #2 right now…I’m not pulling for one over the other…any guy that is good enough to earn the spot I will root for just as hard as the other..They all seem like quality guys worthy of the title OU qb
Cody is a performer and can’t wait to see him get some playing time. He started at a very good Colleyville Heritage program as a freshman. For those not familiar with this program, their stadium is directly across the highway from the Southlake Carroll stadium.

Unfortunately I don’t think those are connected but I wish they were. We apparently want mckinley at linebacker so to me he should already have an offer since no linebackers have pulled the trigger.
Deserves? A little strong IMO. If he is so deserving, why has no one else offered him? They’ve all seen the same video you have.
He has the size and speed everyone wants. A little skinny but that is fixable. Everyone raves about his game tape. Name a knock on his game if you think he doesn’t deserve an offer.

But my point is this. He has been evaluated by OU and many other top programs. None have offered. His best offer to date is what? Minnesota? Not saying he’s not a good prospect. Just thinking there is a reason no one is offering him. And it’s probably that they just don’t think he’s good enough. There I said it! Flame away!

Recruiting is a business of hype and it starts very early in the process. He’s from a little town with no exposure and little training. Just think if he moved to Jenks his freshman year. Who knows, he may be the one everyone is recruiting. He’s an unknown and schools like OU are focused on more polished players in this position. What we see on tape is an athlete with a tremendous amount of upside like a lot of stars OU has had in the past. Bradford was only a 3 star and Long had to plead to get him an offer. To many to mention but that is what we are seeing.
I bet if OU offered, you would see the flood gates open. That would provide maximum exposure for other schools. Happens all of the time.
Boom, I agree with what you are saying. And please don’t anyone think I don’t like Whitfield. Fact is, I’m hoping that he eventually becomes a Sooner. But that will have to happen only after further evaluation of his senior season. He attended OU camp and did not show enough to warrant an offer at that time. Perhaps he will in time. I trust our coaches’ talent evaluations more than I trust the readers here, and that includes myself. In fact, I am a guy who hope we don’t fill up our recruiting class too soon as I feel that there are many great players who don’t fully develop until their Sr season. Hopefully Whitfield is one of those guys.

A lot of the people raving about him including myself are under the impression he would perform just as well at the 6A level. And I think he plays 3A level so it’s not like he’s coming from the most obscure school in oklahoma.

I don’t have any “sources” but there’s just speculation about whether he was in Norman or not. Some believe he’s trying to visit school(s) quietly in hopes of not giving away where he wants to go.
I’ve had many birthdays and Christmases, that must be why I’m not that intrigued with who a “mystery” guest is.
If he isn’t loud and proud to be at OU, no matter the reason, it just doesn’t get my curiosity up.
If it is haughton and if he ends up choosing ou or whoever then I’m sure the details will come out as to why he’s keeping it quiet. Then again I wouldn’t be surprised if I bit the bait from someone’s speculation.

kind of feel the same. Come February we will know for sure. I hoped for 2 commits in July and 2 in August, 75% of the way there. Is 10 or 11 commits by the end of August about normal for OU? They (OU) seem to be more of a thoroughbred type horse instead of a quarterhose.
Committed or not, the game is still open up until signing day. With the smaller class we’re able to take next year, I think our coaches want to let the season play out before getting desperate about players. How we play during the season usually decides how many athlete’s are interested more than the off season circus and pony show.
