The Houston Chronicle is reporting that Oklahoma and Houston will open the 2016 season against one another in the Advocare Texas Kickoff at NRG Stadium. If accurate, this would seem to imply OU will either be rescheduling or potentially even buying their way out of a previously scheduled 2016 season opener with Louisiana-Monroe.
Which would agree with talk this offseason (most notably from Carey Murdock of SoonerScoop.com) that Oklahoma has a self-imposed desire to open the 2016 season on the road (or in this case a neutral site, of course) due to the previously announced stadium renovations. Evidently, there is at least some concern internally the construction would not be complete by that time.
In addition to ULM, Oklahoma’s only other officially scheduled non-conference for 2016 is a home contest against Ohio State. Depending on how things eventually shake out, the OU adminĀ could potentially manage their way into opening the newly renovated stadium with a marquee game against the Buckeyes. But at this point that is simply speculation, though even the idea of it might get OU fans excited just a little bit.

Makes sense from many angles. SOS trading ULM for Houston while giving extra time for the stadium reno then opening up the renovated stadium vs tOsu!! Wow!! Love it when a plan comes together.
To open it against ohio state would be awesome. I don’t think Norman would be able to support the amount of spectators outside the stadium for that opener.
I agree and think we should be swapping this game back and forth with the Tulsa series. We need a presents for recruiting and SEC blockade
I would think we’d be off on Sept 10, play tOSU to christen the new stadium, then play ULM on the 24th. Or we might pull an SEC and play them Early November.

I haven’t looked at the schedule/calendar to see how many weeks this could move back the home opener, but if you aren’t game ready in Week 1, you probably won’t be game ready in Week 2 or Week 3.
I believe the expectation is they’d be in the final stages and might not quite be ready to host a game, rather than any major constructional issues still needing to be completed.
As a Houstonian I am beyond excited!
