The Path to Norman

Drake’s father was a long-time employee with the University of Oklahoma in an athletic advisory role, retiring in 2017. His son Drake decided to play ball where his dad had worked. The Norman North, Oklahoma product joined the Sooners as a preferred walk-on.

Career so Far

Stoops took a redshirt season in 2018. He appeared in two games, snagging a couple of catches and looking good in his playing time.

Drake played a larger role in 2019. He saw snaps in all 14 games at receiver and earned time at punt returner as well. He was named to Academic All-Big 12 First Team for the year.

An even bigger year was in store for 2020. Stoops averaged a little over 20 ypg receiving, hauling in a couple of touchdowns and making some very key plays. In a shaky receiver group, Drake was as dependable as could be asked; the receiver started in seven games. He was named an Academic All-Big 12 First Team member and put on scholarship.

In 2021, Stoops cemented himself as one of the most quietly dependable OU receivers in recent memory. He played in most games of the season and made a handful of clutch catches, including a two-point conversion against Texas. In a receiver room that struggled to make itself known throughout the season, Stoops was a consistent option.

This Season

In his fifth season on campus, Stoops will look to end his career on a high note. Jalil Farooq, Theo Wease, and Marvin Mims are set to be the starting receivers; Stoops will almost certainly be the first man behind them and play very regularly. With a new quarterback, offensive coordinator, head coach, receiver coach, and several new faces in the receiver room, there will be plenty of change. Stoops will be one of the unchanging parts in what is certain to be another solid season from the receiver.
