Boom News! | ’22 LB Kobie McKinzie Flips Back to Oklahoma!
Posted on: December 13, 2021
The Sooners picked up a massive re-commitment this morning from ’22 linebacker Kobie McKinzie (6’2 245) out of Lubbock Texas.
You are all very familiar with Kobie as he had been committed to Oklahoma for more than 2 years before opening things up when the former staff bolted for the west coast in the early morning hours following the Sooners final regular season game.
McKinzie, who was as solid of a commit as you could ever hope for, had his world turned upside down by the staff leaving and decided to open up his recruitment. Shortly after his commitment, he visited Austin and secured his spot at UT by giving them a verbal commitment.
Brent Venables was named Sooners head coach shortly after the commit to Texas and he let Kobie and his family know that he was not going to give up and Kobie was a huge priority for Venables and the desired centerpiece for his defense in Norman.
Venables went in home with Kobie and the family and hit all the right notes…as his dad Will Truby said following the visit: āIf you have a son who is a linebacker, this is the guy you want coaching him. There may not be anyone, currently in coaching, who has a better reputation as a linebacker coach or really any other positionā¦I donāt know that you can equate anyone more with any position more than Brent Venables and the linebacker positionā.
McKinzie made his way back to Norman following his high school game early Saturday morning and spent a ton of time with the Sooners staff and his friends in Norman, like Danny Stutsman.
The significance of this re-commitment cannot be overstated. Brent Venables went out and locked up the one guy he identified immediately as his priority upon taking the head coaching job in Norman.
Huge.
