The Good Stuff | CHO23N

As many of you know, Sooners 2023 wide receiver target DeAndre Moore (5’11 190) out of Los Alamitos, CA is making his commitment announcement on September 24th.

As many of you also know, he is teammates with a pair of Oklahoma ’23 commits in QB Malachi Nelson and WR Makai Lemon.

For those of you who don’t read all the comments on all the posts (and I don’t blame you), I wanted to reiterate what I mentioned in regard to how we feel about the situation…

That would fall in the ‘very good’ category.

The Sooners have the top class in the country which currently includes:

QB Malachi Nelson – Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, CA) – 6’3  180
WR Brandon Inniss – American Heritage (Fort Lauderdale, FL) – 6’0 190
WR Makai Lemom – Los Alamitos (Los Alamitos, CA) 6’0 180
RB Treyaun Webb – Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL) 6’0 188
TE Luke Hasz – Bixby (Bixby, OK) 6’3 220
OL Joshua Bates – Durango (Durango, CO) – 6’3 280

Quick Hitter | Kam Dewberry Post-OV
– CJ Vogel – Posted on: September 21, 2021

Caught up with 2022 Atascocita OL Kam Dewberry this afternoon at practice. Of course, Dewberry was one of the headliners on official visits this weekend at Oklahoma and I wanted to get his thoughts on the over all experience.

Dewberry told me he thought the visit was a “10/10” and added he did not think there was much more the staff could have done to make the trip better.

According to Kam, the trip to Norman made his decision “10x harder” following the OV.

Oklahoma really helped themselves this weekend and knocked it out of the park on the official visit. I am not quite there yet, but I am really close to giving OU my vote of confidence in this recruitment.

The Sooners are expected to be hosting another official visitor this weekend in addition to Chris McClellan and Marvin Jones.

This is a defensive recruit who is currently committed elsewhere.

Will update down the line.

Quick Notes on A Pair of Visitors | McCellan & Jones
Charlie S – Posted on: September 23, 2021

*** As you know, in-state defensive line target Chris McClellan (6’3 295) out of Owasso, OK, is officially visiting Norman this weekend.

The trip to OU comes on the heels of an impressive unofficial visit to Florida as they took on Alabama which left the Gators feeling pretty confident in their chances with the big man out of Owasso.

Super K wrote about that visit (HERE) and it left him feeling that Florida was trending for McClellan but noted that he would never count out the instate flagship program.

This weekend, the Sooners get to shoot their best shot and it is critical that they push all the right buttons as not only will they be hosting Chris and his immediate family, but they will also have the opportunity to make an impression on some extended family.

McClellan has been to Norman a number of times over the summer and through the start of the season with his most recent trip being the Western Carolina game a couple of weeks ago. Coach Thibodeaux, the Sooners interior defensive line coach, have been out to see him at Owasso, so the communication is there.

If the Sooners are going to make a big move in this recruitment, this weekend will likely be the turning point.

*** Oklahoma also gets to take their shot with elite EDGE player Marvin Jones Jr (6’4.5 245) out of Fort Lauderdale, FL as he will also be taking his official visit to Norman.

It is well known that Jones is a Florida State legacy but to his credit, Sooners OLB/DE coach Jamar Cain has been steadily chopping wood in this recruitment, and getting the talented EDGE on campus is proof of that work.

That decision by Cain to continue putting in work here now seems very wise as the Florida State program is struggling to say the very least.

One added note of interest…we have heard that his mother doesn’t necessarily want him at Florida State.

One on One | West Virginia
– Charlie S – Posted on: September 23, 2021

The Sooners are back in action on Saturday evening as they take on West Virginia at home under the lights!

While the Sooners are a prohibitive favorite, there are a couple ‘One on One’ matchups that stand out to me in regard to the outcome of the game.

As I mentioned in the ‘Know Your Opponent’ thread, Mountaineer Head Coach Neal Brown mentioned his team is committed to a ‘Two Headed’ quarterback approach with Doege and Greene. I don’t know a lot about Greene at this point, but I do know he is mainly a running threat and the OU linebackers and front will need to be on their toes and keep his effectiveness to a minimum. So that is something I am keeping an eye on.

I am going to focus on a couple of other ‘One on One’ matchups that stick out to me.

One on One Number One:

Sooners right tackle Tyrese Robinson vs Mountaineer ‘Bandit’ (OLB) Jared Bartlett

Bartlett is listed as the backup at the Bandit position for West Virginia, but he got more snaps than Cowan who is the listed starter last week against Virginia Tech and he made them count.

Bartlett got 33 snaps and had 5 tackles and 3 sacks on his own. He also had a couple additional QB Pressures and was in general a menace.

The Bandit position generally lines up on the boundary side of the defensive formation for the Mountaineers and Bartlett is not a big guy at 6’2 215, but he attacks with speed and elusiveness.

It will be imperative for Robinson (and Harrison on the other side) to display good footwork along with some strong handwork as they attempt to contain Bartlett’s impact.

Bartlett will have a difficult time beating the big guys to the inside, so Robinson (and Harrison) will be charged with leading Bartlett up the field to preserve the pocket. Let’s hope Rattler figures out it would be a good thing to step up in the pocket in those instances instead of backpedaling and rolling as Bartlett will eventually get around the obstacle in front of him and circle back towards the QB.

One on One number two:

Sooners linebacker DaShaun White (could pick any of them) vs West Virginia Running back Leddie Brown

Brown had a huge day against Virginia Tech as his stat line read: 19 carries for 161 yards which was good for an average of 8.5 yards per carry with 1 touchdown.

Of those 161 yards, 80 came on one play, a long touchdown.

So you’re thinking 18 carries for 81 yards…not anything awe-inspiring as that is around a 4 yard per carry average…but good running backs are good because they do have those long runs in a game and they do count and they do have to be taken into account.

My concern is with the linebackers missing their run fits and blowing right past their gaps and assignments. We hadn’t seen a lot of that in the last 2 years, but last week against Nebraska, we started to see that again.

The only chance I give West Virginia to have an effective offense against OU is based on establishing the run. OU has been very good against the run in the first two games, but with Brown and the installation of Greene, the focus on the run defense takes on another level of complexity.

The linebackers really need to step up their game this week as they have been pretty disappointing early on, particularly in their pass coverage. Yes, West Virginia will likely try to test them in coverage as well, but the focus needs to be on shutting down the run game.
