Preseason All-Big 12 Team & Awards Announced

Tuesday morning the Big 12 Conference released their preseason awards and All-Big 12 team, which you can view in full here. While it wasn’t a huge surprise that no Sooners were named as preseason award winners, there was an outside shot Eric Striker could have been named the preseason Defensive Player of the Year. But instead that went to TCU’s Devonte Fields. Meanwhile, the Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year went to Baylor’s Bryce Petty and Oklahoma State’s Tyreek Hill, respectively.

OU did however place four players on the preseason All-Big 12 team (again, there is no second team in the preseason). Those players were; Daryl Williams, Michael Hunnicutt, Eric Striker, and Zack Sanchez. Aside from possibly Williams, who a number of media I saw did not include, there probably weren’t any surprises on those Sooners included. In terms of snubs, I’d say Charles Tapper not making the list is a bit of a surprise. But at the same time, the Big 12 is pretty loaded this year along the defensive line.

In general I think these were right in line with what a number of people have predicted, unless I’m just overlooking someone (which is always possible). Regardless, we want to hear what you think. Is there an OU guy you feel really warranted a spot over someone else who made it? Or someone from another Big 12 school you found to be undeserving of a spot? Sound off in the comments below.

How careless of me to fail to mention OSU placed all of ZERO guys on this team.

    So….you know….have fun w/ that if you’d like.

Tapper will make them all regret this list.

  • DCinAZ says:

Not sure what merits Tyreek Hill as newcomer of the year above any other newcomer on any other team other than pure hype. You could just as easily put Quick or Mixon in there.

    • Zack says:

Just that he’s going into a favorable situation. Quick and mixon and I would throw perine in there are all going to be competing against much better guys just to see the field. And people are in awe of the fact that hill ran under a 4.3 or whatever.

I am in the camp that despises preseason lists of any sort. That being said, Tapper will be the DPOY at the end of the season.

Pre-Season anything means nothing to me. Even Pre-Season top 25 polls.

  • John Garner says:

Bummer about Tapper but I’m sure that he and the team are shooting for more than B12 honors this season.

  • Doobie74OU says:

I’m not saying the list got it wrong because it is so hard with only 2 WR spots but Shepard definitely has a shot at this list with a good year.

Preseason awards (teams) are always interesting for the fans, but I think they are typically a lot of hype. Take Devonte Fields for example, he was a beast his freshman year, but very average last season. He was dealing with some injuries, but he certainly had a letdown. So, he was included on the list because of what he could do, not so much what he has proven.

Plus, we (as fans) get a chance to tear apart these lists…and that’s always fun.

LOVE the lack of respect. I would much rather have 0 guys on the list than 11. Get to work boys! You have something to prove! : )

  • SoonerFan11 says:

Thompson should be all big 12. You cant play LT at OU two years and not get it. I also think Flowers could be newcomer (could be anyone). If Shannon plays he will lead the team on tackles (92 tackles last year) which I think gets him all big 12. Those are my predictions.
