The Path to Norman
Key Lawrence is a double Tennessee product. The defensive back played high school football in Nashville and was a top 100 recruit in the 2020 class. Despite many teams, OU included, vying for his commitment, he played for Tennessee his freshman season, playing in all games at defensive back and special teams. In the offseason, Lawrence was part of a max exodus from the Volunteers and one of several players to land with the Sooners.

Career so Far
Lawrence arrived in Norman in the spring and impressed immediately. He is athletic and has the size to fit in well in a Coach Grinch defense. Key was one of the names TFB routinely reported as one turning heads in practice.

Highlights
This Season
The 2020 starting safeties, DTY and Pat Fields, return this season and seem to be on the path to starting again. However, Lawrence is pushing hard and has all the tools to be a starting safety in Speed D. Key recently worked at nickel as well, where coaches liked him as another solid option. Sooner fans won’t have to wait long to see the transfer and shouldn’t expect to see him leave the field very often.
