Cody Ford Thoughts and Recruiting Notes

Coach Bedenbaugh is hot on the trail of this 2015 kid named Cody Ford (Pineville, LA). I actually came across the young man a while back, but K and I are texting back and forth one day (we do that quite a bit most days) and I was at work when he mentioned him to me. So I write the name down, and let K know that I’ll check Ford out when I get home. The day before I had just got done checking out Tyler Moore’s film and if you’ve read my thoughts about him, you know how excited I was to see Tyler’s physical style of play. I got all fired up and literally thought to myself as I was driving home how much I would enjoy seeing a guard and tackle tandem that were both that physical. Well I get home and knock out all of the honey-do’s that the wife had lined out for me, and when I finally got the chance to see the film I was happy I did.

Two words popped into my head after watching one play of Cody’s game. Those words….Trent Williams. He looks like him. He acts like him. He plays like him. Trent is probably one of the nastiest offensive linemen in the league today, and he just projects attitude in every aspect of his game. In my opinion, Cody does the same thing. When I was able to catch up with him a while back, we were talking about some of his film. I told him that during a few plays, as he was taking the defender to the ground, it looked like he wanted to bring a knee up into the guy’s ribs. Cody just laughed. He didn’t say he wanted to, but he definitely didn’t deny it either. When you watch Cody play, you can see that the guy has an overwhelming need to be physical. He also has that same need to be dominant. Watching his tape you get the sense he’s disappointed that he doesn’t get to hit people more than he does, so he tries to get extra shots in during every play.

From a tackle standpoint, while I’m very excited about Bobby Evans’ overall athleticism, I’m extremely excited about the prospect of having Ford at one of those tackle spots as well. Cody is one of those players who is fun to watch and coach. There’s no better feeling out there than knowing the guy you choose to be in the spot is going to give you absolutely everything they have. As a manager and as a coach it frees you up to focus on other aspects of the business or of the game, and having guys like him on your team makes you a better leader. You see the effort and nastiness Cody plays with, and then you start thinking to yourself that everyone else should do the same. The expectations for the group are raised, and the whole team gets better as a result of one guy’s effort.

Cody is built a little like a guard in that he’s slightly sawed off, but to me Cody is still a tackle at the next level. I think he’s long enough to play the spot even though he’s listed as 6’4”. I like his short area explosion, and I like his feet. He’s a step quicker than most guards you see, and reminds me of how athletic John Michael McGee was a few years ago. While JMM was also a 6’4” guy, Cody seems to have longer arms and a bigger frame. His ability to use his hands and how active they are are make up for whatever lack of length he may have compared to a 6’5” or 6’6” guy. He absolutely fits the mold of a powerful offensive lineman that Bedenbaugh goes after and would give us a hammer out there on the edge.

It’s refreshing to turn on his film and see the attitude he exudes in his play. In this day and age, people are artists at coming up with new and creative excuses and obstacles. Cody’s the kind of player that takes the excuse or obstacle and takes its lunch money. He tells it why he took the lunch money. He tells it what he plans to do with the lunch money. And he schedules an appointment for the next day (or next play if you will) to take it again.

With the scheme, attitude, and execution we have up front with Coach Bedenbaugh — not to mention Keith Ford, Alex Ross, Joe Mixon, and Samaje Perine playing the role of human battering rams behind them — I may need to dust off my old wishbone stuff and hearken back to the days of Lydell Carr, and the bloody your nose style we used to roll out on the field.

Recruiting Notes

Despite being committed to TCU, Cody has made it pretty clear that OU is in great position with him. He let us know that he was waiting on the Mississippi State and LSU camps before he makes a final decision. He did receive a Miss. State offer, but said OU is higher on his list than the Bulldogs. So it would seem the main obstacle right now is going to be the LSU camp this weekend. If Ford earns an LSU offer things could get interesting, but as of right now OU fans have a lot of reason to be optimistic.

Landing Ford, Evans, and Madison Akamnonu would give OU three likely OTs all with varied strengths. Add them to Orlando Brown and Kenyon Frison from last year’s class, and OU will be back on the path to having some real depth at the OT position once again.

Thank you JY!!! I said the EXACT same thing about Cody when I first saw him…Trent Williams all the way. Hope we reel him in!

  • Super K says:

lol at JY just loving how much this kid loves to hit people.

  • tforce says:

    1. Height vs arm length
It’s my understanding that the reason that height is coveted for OT is that it is general proportional to arm length. Arm length is important because it’s correlated to OT’s ability to lock DE’s. Is this true?
If so, why don’t we just report arm length?

    2. Why don’t teams just recruit OT and ELITE OG/C prospects?
C/OG that don’t pan out are dead roster spots because they can’t move to another position.

The best OT’s can stay at OT and the others can move inside. This would manifest this year in OU taking Evans, Ford, and Akamnonu and then a JUCO OT plus Barnett.

  • tforce says:

You brought up the RBs this isn’t totally off topic.
Really like your position previews. Waiting for your RB and HB/FB/TE preview.

The RB position seems so tight that a player with Ross’s ability but unfortunate temperament really needs to show discipline from start to finish.

Early on, seem to remember that Perine said he was told he could be RB or FB. With Flowers emergence, wonder if the offensive staff could cook up plays with both Perine and Flowers on the field at the same time.

These Swiss Army knife players make the HUNH-spread game really fun because of the formation/play flexibility without substitution.

    • Zack says:

I wondered the same thing about perine because of his size but it sounds like he’s going to be like Trent Richardson/mark Ingram a big guy that can scoot.

    • JY says:

Lemme see what I can whip up

  • hOUligan says:

I literally got the chills when I read the “Lydell Carr and the bloody your nose style we (OU) used to roll out on the field.” Am SO ready to leave the finesse behind and go back to that on both sides of the ball. Seriously. Just looking at his pic, the lower body mass, you say ‘OG’ and likely a danged good one where he carries his weight. Is Tyler Moore in Coach B’s crosshairs?

  • Kody K. says:

JY- Don’t forget Carr’s alternate Leon Perry. What a fullback tandem.

  • DCinAZ says:

    Jesus……..that boy is NAAAAA-STY!

When I think of an offensive linemen’s disposition, that’s what I think of. He doesn’t even care if the play is past him, his man is going to eat dirt. He bounced at least 7 dudes off the ground in that video, and I’m pretty sure a couple of them bounced more than once.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Bret Bielema thinks he has a nice butt. 🙂

  • Boom says:

JY, his initial punch is off the charts and uses his core well. Love his flat back and arm extension. One play he drove the DE to the other side of the ball and then landed on him. Great leg drive after initial contact. I’m thinking that big physical RT that can either cave in the line or get to the second level. Ford provides options for Coach B as he could play T or G.

    • JY says:

You gotta like the versatility he brings to the table. Bedenbaugh definitely knows how to build an Oline

  • Gary Robbins says:

Thanks JY this dude is meaner than a junk yard dog ! After he visits LSU and depending on their intentions has he indicated a timeline for a commitment? He is definitely a hunter and seems to play with a chip on his shoulder.

  • Eric Hoffpauir says:

He knocked one guy down so hard that he almost bounced off the ground and back into a standing position.

  • L'carpetron Dookmarriot says:

I stopped reading at Trent Williams.

  • Doobie74OU says:

JY seems way to excited by this kid. I think there is a bit of a Recruit crush going on here! And what’s not to love about the 2nd coming of Trent Williams!

  • Roger Nixon says:

I think playing in that Louisiana humidity has something to do with it. You have to get mean to survive.

    • Gary Robbins says:

I think it’s the mosquitoes. They are large enough to swallow a chicken. lol

      • Sooner Ray says:

Hey, just got home from a party with Bobby. This recruiting is looking positive here lately.

        • Gary Robbins says:

That Bobby is tougher than I am. I was with him on Monday and Wednesday. I said recently I hoped for 2 commits in July (done) and 2 in August (might be more). P.S. Have you ever seen Bobby dance-it’s hilarious. On a football note who do you look to commit next?

          • Sooner Ray says:

He is a tough guy, never seen him dance, bet it’s funny. Some of these commitments caught me off guard, right now I’m kinda stoked about this Ford kid.

  • soonerbred4ever says:

Someone needs to show him the list of NFL linemen OU has sent and their contracts.

  • Shifty says:

Man we got room for another Ford in the garage!

  • EasTex says:

Good to see you back, JY, and in fighting form I might add.

    • JY says:

      Gettin there!
Gonna get hot on a mini trench warfare from the spring game to get you guys ready for the season!

  • Isaac Wright says:

In the spirit of football season I thought u guys might like this

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Ford and Barnett would be a great tandem

  • Baron Boomer says:

    Lordy!

    On Landthieves twitter today:-

RB Perine “lifted 275 20 times, broad jumped over 10 ft and vertical’d over 35 inches.”

    • EasTex says:

He continues to amaze and he hasn’t even had the pads on yet.

    • John Reed says:

Ready to see this kid in action! I think he has the chance to be really special. Coach Gundy deserves a raise.

    • Baron Boomer says:

Please say he can hurdle like a gazelle too!!! 🙂
      Baron Boomer.

  • Josh says:

One of the best things I can ever see is a kid that you can tell LOVES playing O Line and Cody is one of those kids. Great punch and he is obviously a “play to the echo of the whistle” kid. Very much see the comparison to Trent Williams and the Dallas Cowboys great OT Erik Williams, guys that play O Line with a defensive mentality. Love to hit you and put you on the turf and then let you know about it! He also does a lot of the little things right already. He does a pretty good job of working his butt to the hole and on counters he does a very good job of getting back into the line and attacking the up field shoulder to kick the kid out. This is another one of those kids that by play 2 or 3 of the film, you’re sold. The coach can save time when making his HUDL video, he doesn’t need to circle Cody, he jumps off the film.

  • steveinok says:

So, is “committed to TCU” same as “uncommitted” in recruitingese?

  • paganpink says:

I just love how he never stops playing for even a second until the whistle blows! You can call it “high motor” or being “nasty” but whatever it is he is absolutely competitive to the point it looks like his life depends on it in dominating the man opposite him.
