The Sooners added the first offensive line piece to their #ChampU22 class today as Demetrius Hunter (6’3″ 290) out of Orange, TX announced he would giving his verbal pledge to Bill Bedenbaugh and Oklahoma!
Hunter chose the Sooners over a dozen or so other offers which included offers from Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and Arizona State.
According to the 247 composite rankings, Hunter is the number one ranked center in the class of ’22.
The Sooners identified the man who many refer to as ‘Pancake’ early on and extended his offer back in June of 2020.
Shortly after he was offered by Bedenbaugh last year, our CJ Vogel caught up with him and asked him about OU and where things stood. Hunter told CJ:
โOklahoma has really shown me the most love,โ Hunter said, who is currently ranked as the number one center in the country according to 247Sports. โThey really like me and really think Iโd be a good fit in their program. They have really been showing me some real good love.โ
With any offensive lineman being recruited by the Sooners, a big reason for interest is the development history of Coach Bedenbaugh and Hunter has taken notice of the recent success in the NFL Draft by Sooner o-linemen.
โ(His development) stands out to me a lot,โ Hunter said. โTo know that he has sent a lot of offensive linemen to the NFL, and thatโs where I want to be at. Itโs great to know that heโs a coach with the capability molded me into a NFL athlete.โ
While the Sooners will benefit from Hunter’s play on the field, Super K recently had another conversation with him and came away very impressed with the young man. K wrote:
‘Hunter is a special young man. As I said, he is really selfless. Heโs exactly what you want in a human being and in an offensive lineman โ someone who wants to be successful but wants those around him to be successful, as well.’
Hunter is a very good ‘center piece’ for Bedenbaugh to use as the foundation for what is expected to be a rather large offensive line class this cycle.
Really nice pick up for Oklahoma here and K will be back out to see Pancake in the near future!
