The Sooners picked up a ‘SpeedD’ commit in their defensive backfield class as Caleb Johnson out of Greenville, TX made his pledge to Oklahoma!
The versatile athlete brings some serious speed to Norman and he has been recruited as a corner by the Sooners.
Johnson chose the Sooners over the likes of Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M and Georgia.
I caught up with him earlier this week and he shared some of his thoughts about why he chose Oklahoma.
Caleb said “I chose OU because they have a great program. They also have great coaches and they showed how they are dedicated to me as a student-athlete.” When I asked him what the biggest factor was in making his choice, he said “The relationships we have built”.
Back in the middle of June, Super K mentioned that Johnson was trending to the Sooners:
‘Sooners have been in pursuit of 2021 ATH, Caleb Johnson (Greenville, TX). As you may recall, Johnson is a burner who plays both ways but the Sooners are recruiting him as a cornerback. His recruitment really took off in the month of May.
It started with OU and LSU offering. That was quickly followed by offers from TAMU, Georgia, TCU, Florida, and others.
I spoke with a source close to Johnson and I’m told that he recently did his virtual visit with Oklahoma.
Sounds like the visit went very well and the parents would like to see Caleb stay close to home.
Source indicated that the Sooners are trending right now and seem to be holding the top spot. I’ve heard that there is a possibility of a decision coming in the near future which corroborates what Caleb told Charlie earlier this week. but as I understand it that isn’t a certainty
If Johnson jumps in the boat, it’s going to get interesting in terms of numbers as I’m told the Sooners are actually in a good spot with at least two other DBs (if not more).’
Oklahoma offered Johnson back in May and they came out swinging in his recruitment as they made a huge first impression with him:
‘I wanted to see how long OU had been in communication with him prior to making the offer and he said: “We just started talking today, but you know, it’s always about the first impression that leads to where things go”.
So how did that first impression go? Johnson told me “The first impression was great, they definitely hit the right notes”.
I found the fact that OU once again started to build a relationship after offering (or at the time of offering) with a recruit interesting. That is one way to make a strong first impression.
The Sooners continue to aggressively chase speed, and Johnson has plenty of it.’
Coach Manning tipped you off on the commitment with a Tweet:
And we had you covered on the Donor Board with this thread with the hints provided
‘We have been able to confirm that OU has received some good news from a 2021 target on the defensive side of the ball.
This commit should give you all an answer on Sooners safety target Tommi Hill who is announcing his decision on Wednesday, as he is not the recruit in question.
Just touched base with the recruit in question and the plan is for him to announce ‘later this week’. So you all won’t have terribly long to wait on this one!’
Johnson is a really nice pickup for the Sooners but don’t be fooled by his rankings…be impressed by his offer list!
