Ryan Broyles wants to be a football coach when his playing days are done, but for now the Detroit Lions receiver is having fun with a little side of scouting.

Broyles said this week he’s evaluating high school recruits for a new website TheFootballBrainiacs.com.

The site, started by the cousin of one of Broyles’ former high school teammates, caters to Oklahoma football fans and analyzes prospects committed to or being recruited by the Sooners.

“Somebody came to me about it,” said Broyles, a two-time All-America at Oklahoma. “I played ball with a couple guys and they were just like, ‘Hey, I think it’d be cool to set up a little website.’ You’ve heard of Rivals and that type of stuff, they were like, ‘I don’t know if any of those guys have really played sports. I think it would be a good idea to get some guys that actually played sports to critique these players and stuff,’ so it’s something I just jumped into.”

Broyles said he’s written up two evaluations so far and he’ll focus primarily on analyzing receivers and defensive backs.

He said he watches a few 5-minute highlight tapes a week, nothing that would take away from his responsibilities with the Lions, and he doesn’t have any designs on being the next Mel Kiper Jr.

“Those guys are terrible at the scout stuff, so hopefully I’ll get a little better rap than that,” Broyles said.
