The Path to Norman

Mykel Jones, a Louisiana native, was a very late addition to the 2016 class. While Jones had been in contact with mostly SEC schools throughout his recruitment, he made a trip to Norman with only a few days to go to signing day. On signing day itself, Mykel decided to become a Sooner.

Career So Far

Jones was coming back from an ACL injury upon arriving in Norman. However, it didn’t take long for the receiver to earn some praise. He showed flashes of being special during the year, but didn’t play with great frequency, even though the ceiling seems to be very high for the young man.

Mykel had a lot of people noting his improvement leading up to his sophomore season. He was one of the guys battling for the inside receiver starting job. An injury to Nick Basquine and Jones’ hard work led to him winning the spot. While he had some key plays in games like Ohio State and TCU, Mykel still wasn’t used as often as many Sooner fans would have hoped.

2018 Season

A shoulder surgery kept Mykel Jones out of spring ball, but he’s ready to play now. Competition at the inside receiver spot will be stiff; guys like Jones, Basquine, Myles Tease, and others will be fighting for the job. Another way that Jones could factor into the season will be as a return man; he’s already been looked at to help on special teams. Whatever his role ends up as, look for the talented Mykel Jones to make an impact this fall.
