The Path to Norman

The OU coaching staff really kicked off their recruitment of Kahlil Haughton at the 2014 Junior Day, where the young man received an offer. The Waco, Texas product returned to OU a handful of times over the next few months, enjoying his visits; however, he was being heavily recruited by a handful of schools. The Sooners weren’t letting up easy though; in fact, former OU corner PJ Mbanasor was a big force in pointing Haughton toward Norman. He was set to commit at the end of summer, but decided to wait until he had taken his official visits in the fall. Texas Tech, Baylor, Nebraska, and Arkansas were big players throughout that fall. The OU staff kept at it the whole time, doing an in-home visit in December.

A short couple weeks later, the staff’s hard work got a response.

Despite coaching changes shorty after his commitment, he stayed strong to the Crimson and Cream.

Career So Far

Throughout Haughton’s first offseason in Norman, his was the name TFB heard the most of the freshman. He continuously stood out for his work ethic in practice. Haughton ended up playing in most of the OU games as a freshman in a backup role. The next two seasons saw a similar story, as he played many games in a backup role.

2018 Season

The battle at free safety has been a tight one this offseason, with Haughton and Robert Barnes as the two main guys being looked at right now. Despite being very close to the season opener, the position is one of a handful that still has no labelled starter; the OU coaching staff is letting competition run its course as long as possible. Whether he wins the starting job or not, the talented safety will look to be a regular contributor this fall and one of very few seniors on this team who will provide a veteran presence.
