Happy New Years!

Deontay Anderson: The Deontay Anderson story has taken another turn. This time it would appear OU and Anderson are parting ways, “Can’t come. They (OU) said they are still unsure of me being eligible to play”.

Anderson said his attorney explained to OU that immediate eligibility is likely, but it doesn’t sound like the Sooners want to take the risk.

Anderson says he will likely stay in Houston and play at the University of Houston. – (Brandon)

– Top 2019 OT, Kenyon Green (Humble, TX) recently decommitted from LSU. He tells me that he will visit OU for their upcoming jr day. Green is one of OU’s top 2019 targets and the Sooners have a real shot here.

– Sooners have been speaking to 2019 OT, Cole Birmingham out of Katy (TX). Birmingham let me know that he will be at the OU jr day as well.

– I spoke with 2019 DE/DT Stephon Wright (Los Angeles, CA) and 2019 CB, Chris Steele (Bellflower, CA). Both Wright and Steele are top Sooners defensive targets in the 2019 class. I’ll have write-ups on them shortly. But did want to say that in speaking to both, Oklahoma appears to be a major threat. OU is not sitting around waiting for USC to miss out on these kids. They’re recruiting these national recruits as if they plan on winning the battles. In fact Steele told me that one of the reasons Texas hesitated to offer him is that they assumed Steele was going to end up at Oklahoma and there wouldn’t be much point in pursuing. Again, I’ll have more on this later.

Garrett Wilson: If you watched the Lake Travis vs. Allen TX state championship game, it was hard to miss 2019 WR/DB, Garrett Wilson. It was definitely hard to miss this competitive catch…

Sooners have focused in on a few 2019 WRs including Arjei Henderson, Theo Wease, Trejan Bridges (committed) and Jadon Haselwood (UGA Commit but Sooner legacy).

The two guys that have, in my estimation, a bit under the radar but may end up being two of the best in the country are Garrett Wilson (Austin, TX) and Dylan Wright (Mesquite, TX). More on Wright later.

I’ve spoken with Garrett and his father, recently. Garrett tells me that he and coach Gundy were in touch this past Monday, “he was just getting to know me and my family, asking questions like, did I grow up liking UT, etc.”

Garrett didn’t actually grow up in Austin. He’s originally from Columbus, Ohio and moved to Austin a few years ago. He has ties to various schools and various parts of the country. His father is from North Carolina, he was born in Chicago, raised in Ohio and then moved to Texas. As such, his recruitment is pretty wide open.

If there is a team to watch early on, I suspect it’s Ohio State. Living in Columbus as a kid, Ohio State was obviously the big show in town. Additionally, Wilson’s high school quarterback is committed to the Buckeyes.

Wilsons father was a college basketball player. In fact Wilson, despite not focusing on basketball, is an elite basketball player himself who could play at the division one level.

The athletic genes are strong in the family. Wilson has an older brother who played at Georgia Tech and an older brother who played at Iowa.

Wilson plays both ways but says he plans on playing wide receiver at the next level and my suspicion is, he’s going to end up being a dang good one. He has great feet, he sees the ball and can make competitive catches, he has the twitch to and the long speed…everything seems to come so effortlessly to him. In fact Wilson’s father said, “I’ve been around a lot of athletes and I don’t say this lightly or because he’s my son, I haven’t seen anyone like him”. Again, this is coming from a college basketball player who has already raised division one football players.

Wilson’s father said they’d like to visit Oklahoma. My guess is if the Sooners extend an offer (and I think most Sooner fans who follow recruiting hope they do) the Wilson’s will make it up to one of the jr days. – (Super K)

Tank Jenkins: 2018 AL OL, Tank Jenkins let me know that he is finally set to visit Oklahoma on January 12th, the first visit weekend after the dead period.

Jenkins says that will likely be his last visit. If Jenkins makes it in there is a possibility the Sooners could fill one of their final spots.

As a reminder, OU has 17 signed with two more on the way with Treveon Johnson and Tavion Thomas. That leaves six final spots. – (Super K)
