At some point I hope to not have to include these “rules” below, but for the noobs…please read, thanks!
* The comments section will be ‘closed’ until the Q&A session is about to start, at which point we will then ‘open’ the comments back up and you can start posting your questions. Once the chat has concluded, we will again ‘close’ the comments so as to avoid any aforementioned clutter after the fact.
* Due to the sheer volume you TFB’ers turn out on a daily basis, the comments aren’t exactly easy to follow once things get crowded in there. So we’d like to request that for the purposes of this ‘Town Hall’ post you limit your comments strictly to the question/s you’d like answered. In turn, we will respond with an answer. Thus if someone is coming to the comments after the fact, in theory, it would be much easier for them to follow along, rather than having to scroll thru dozens of comments trying to follow along.
* Follow up questions are fine, within reason, but obviously what we’re trying to avoid is a drawn out, back-and-forth conversation in the comments cluttering things up for everyone else.
* Again, at least for now, our plan is to delete any unnecessary comments in these ‘Town Hall’ posts to make it easier for everyone to follow the conversation and get to the information they/you want. So if your comment gets deleted, it doesn’t necessarily mean you did anything wrong or can expect a visit from the Ban Hammer. Rather, we’re just trying to keep things clean and easy to follow.
* We’ll see how things go, but the plan as of now is to spend around 30 minutes trying to answer as many questions as we can get to. If we don’t get to your question within the allotted time, well there’s always next week. We love the interaction and are working to encourage even more of it, but we also have lives too you know 😉
Hopefully that all makes sense and you understand why we’re approaching things the way we’ve chosen to do so.
Alright, now that we have all that out of the way we’ll open up the comments starting at 7pm (CT). Looking forward to seeing you back here then.

Go.
Or not.
Good morning gentlemen…
the temperature is 110 degrees.
will Q’s abscence be something to worry about?
Wasn’t really playing much as it was, so I’d say no.
l have
He flashed the other night. But clearly the coaches feel good about Wade and Romar. Never can have too many NGs but Sooners could afford to take a hit there…to some degree.
I’m here…
Which LB recruits not committed do you think we have best shot at signing?
Phillips
Phillips
Is Terrace Marshall Jr visiting for the tOSU game?
Any young guys that might get the nod to start at a certain posisition this week? Or at least a major bump in minutes played?
I’d expect Cobb again at CB, put that’s the low hanging fruit answer.
Was thinking along the line of guys that haven’t gotten a start yet. Thanks for the answer though.
Start? None immediately come to mind.
We’ll have to see what the rotation is looking like in practice but Sooners will probably start with standard starters.
Odds of getting a BOOM this weekend?
I’d hope pretty good, but I suspect the scoreboard will be the ultimate deciding factor.
If one happens, I’m leaning on 2018 more than 2017
Of the newcomers that saw some time last week, which one’s also get time this week and of those which has the biggest impact?
Gallimore
I think Neville Gallimore. He’s a special talent.
I assume Mykel Jones gets some reps this saturday and Cobb plays corner opposite JT. Are there any other freshman or first years that get time outside of special teams vs Ohio State (barring a blowout either way of course)?
I’d say Gallimore, maybe Bledsoe some.
I’m betting Jones gets reps. And Cobb and quick will rotate.
If Taylor commits this weekend would OU still take Jacob Phillips commitment?
I’d say yes, but the #s would definitely be tight. My guess would be they’d try to hold Taylor off, if possible.
Will Caleb Kelly see the field Saturday?
For special teams, maybe.
Will Mixon start at punt return against Ohio State?
I’ll go w/ yes.
Special teams may be the deciding factor. I wouldn’t rule it out.
Other than home field advantage. What advantages does OU have over Ohio State ?
Not many, IMO.
If they play it correctly I’d say the run game.
OU has a pair of backs that are dangerous down hill and on the edges
Brandon, where’s the TFB tailgate this Saturday?
JY my man…if you could take one tackle out of the following for the 17 class…who would it be and why:
Adrian Ealy
Chuck Filiaga
Grayson Reed
Tramonda Moore (assuming he qualifies)
Man that’s a wealth of riches. I like Gray Reed. His dad and I chat quite a bit and I love the character there. I like Tramonda a lot too. He’s a good kid. Filiaga is also a great player. I’d go with any of those three with sentimental picks being Moore and Reed..
JY loves Filiaga
I do. He probably has the best frame for what Bedenbaugh likes to do. Mauler. Very powerful.
which interior d-lineman are the Sooners most likely to get by signing day, G. Rogers or M. Wilson?
I’d have to go with Greg Rogers. If USC has a down year.
Agree with JY but Marvin is expected to make it Norman twice this season so who knows.
OU has a real chance to make a BIG impression w/ both Saturday night, but especially Wilson.
How many players will Mike Stoops rush against JT Barrett?
Depends on down and distance and how he feels about his back end. But I suspect you’ll see his standard 3, 4 man rushes with some fire zones as well
I’d rather see 4 man rushes. Especially with the inexperience of their Oline.
I would sincerely hope they learn from their mistakes in this aspect against Houston.
Most definitely. I just hope Mike Stoops isn’t stubborn. I would like to see them set the tone early, with out the costly penalties like Houston. Insufficient rush along with undisplined play will get us killed I feel like.
Guys I’m k3aving for MRI on my foot and ankle. Enjoy Town Hall..
Dang, hope it goes well…or as well as can be expected. Wishing you the best, in other words.
Y’alls score predictions?
The sooners have ripped my guts out so many times that I’ll stay away from this one. I will say I have a good feeling about it.
What do you expect to see more, designed runs or designed passes. Also what do you think the percentage will be?
Bonus questions, what do you want to see in terms of run to pass?
60/40 run-pass
Score dependent, of course, but I’ll say more passes, unfortunately.
As always hey’re going to try to establish the run. Don’t see them getting away from it. Houston was too recent.
I hope!
In your opinion, Why does OU have a harder time catching fire on the recruiting trail…example Texas beats ND and 5 stars are calling them. And I understand we are hot on the trail now but texas had a losing record and stayed hot.
PEople tend to forget Texas is the state school of Texas. They caught fire with in-state players. OU is always hot with in-state kids. Neglected Levi Draper for the longest and still landed him…for example.
Few inherent advantages a lot of other schools have, and a ‘laid back’ approach though that has changed some in recent years.
I think the location plays into it, but quite honestly, OU needs to win and win on a big stage for them to really take off.
Baker didn’t figure into the run game at all vs. ULM……do we see more roll outs and run/pass options for him this week?
Everything he can do…he will do. And they’ll need to move the pocket. Interior pressure could be a problem. That NG is nice.
At least he is no Oliver!
Some, but I don’t think they are all that eager to put him in those spots considering what little proven depth they have behind him.
Any secret visitors who are committed elsewhere visiting this weekend? (Not including Boyce and the kid committed to Vandy)
Not that comes to mind…
How much would OU benefit from an offensive scheme similar to BU/Tulsa? I feel like our current offense is archaic and does not utilize our best skill players. The downhill running game seems like it suits our players better than the current Mike Leach system we run.
Both K and I are BIG buyers of the Baylor system. Downhill run with stress by alignment on the D
Agree with J. Nothing better IMO than the Baylor system. I don’t believe you can out-scheme it. Can only be out athleted.
Forces your front 7 to stop the run alone without safety help, and it also forces your db’s to stay with the receivers.
There was a lot of hype around Mayfield going into the year. Many on here were saying he was better than Watson (not me). Now it seems, based on the answer below and the comments, QB may not even be an advantage for us this game (recognizing JT as a good QB). Is is more Mayfield or the WRs that has brought our expectations down?
I am just now getting to watch JT. I like him. But I like Mayfield as well. The problem is Mayfield is a good athlete. JT is a great athlete. No matter what happens…he’s got his legs and they are elite. He also throws the ball well.
Not an identity yet offensively. I think that Baker is dangerous in a run first play action offense. I think he can extend plays and give defenses fits. I think that if they win this weekend everyone settles down and takes off.
What on earth is going on with PJ Mbanasor? Pretty much every corner we have played last week, but not him. Is his career over at OU?
Definitely can’t say his career at OU is over at this point, but obv things are not looking great at the moment.
I’m stumped there. He had a good spring but a not so great fall camp is what I heard. Still think he’s talented…maybe just taking more time to develop
PJ appears to have all of the measurable – why has he not seen the field this year and is he likely to see any playing time soon?
Hard to see it if they didn’t even put him in last week.
Over/Under on 150 total rushing yards for OU Saturday night.
Better be over.
Going with the over.
Does it hurt us with recruits that we do not seem to provide a lot of playing time to freshmen? It seems other teams play talented freshmen earlier.
The Sooners have given freshmen a shot more and more. Cobb this year. Mbanasor last year. Overton played some last year. JT played early. Like anywhere else, freshman aren’t going to get the nod over an established upper classmen but I think the Sooners give them a fair shot.
What are our chances of landing Demarco Murray’s nephew?
That’s a question best left for Brandon. He knows all about the young man. I’d guess chances are good. His coach has ties to OU and of course…Murray
It’s his guardian, which is David White, former recruiting coordinator at OU and helped raise Demarco, and coached him at Bishop Gorman, as well. 2019 kid. He is a star.
I know we’re not really commenting on other’s posts, but what’s the kid’s name? Thought I’d check out his tape.
Is Anthony Cooks visiting this weekend?
Great question. I’ll check…
Asked last night. Waiting on response.
Wow, slow in here tonight. Maybe we don’t need to do these as often as I originally thought.
Late notice.
agreed
12 hour heads up isn’t sufficient enough? How much time do you all need? 😉

Can you yell me what a buckeye is? 🙂
A worthless nut.
It’s because you guys keep us so well informed. lol
Any chance Will Johnson ever starts at CB?
Barring injury, I’d say no.
Doubtful but I think he could do it.
I do too. Really think he’s an NFL DB.
Any receivers you’re hearing that will get a bump in minutes this week?
I’d bet on AD Miller
I’d have to expect Miller and Jones after last Saturday.
Maybe Mykel Jones
Best or highest rated prospect you think OU lands this year, that isn’t currently committed?
Greg Rogers
Mykel Jones get an earlier chance this week & do you expect Mixon to be returning punts from the get go?
Yes & yes.
Regardless of outcome this week, do you think Big XII is OU’s for the taking? Or are you more impressed with another school two weeks into season.
Can’t say that until we see what happens @ TCU & vs. Texas, both figure to be tough games. If they can get past both, then it’s really just @ Tech that would worry me.
Texas…there’s a big dropoff after them. They are tough legitimately, and can run and stop the run.
I think TCU found something in that 4th quarter the other night. Texas will be tough.
What kind of seating do the recruits get at the game and are they grouped together?
yes
Different times and different teams and personel but OU didn’t beat the pants off Texas Tech by playing coverage. Sometimes of course but lots of pressure and a dominant d line because of it when the d line was good but not great all season in 08. How much do you think that type of defense would benefit OU this Saturday?
IT’s a fine line with a running qb but I think a healthy dose of field pressure. A lot of disguised looks…having those backers moving in and out of gaps. Get your OLBs moving around. Anything to make even a running RB guess is good. IT’s not something OU does much of anymore
What has been the tone in practice this week from the coaches & players?
Going to definitely check on that
Linebacker play/talent is the biggest weakness on the OU defense. Agree or disagree?
I’d disagree, still think it’s the secondary. LBs are serviceable enough, and the issue at that 2nd CB spot supersedes any issues at LB, IMO.
Any thoughts on the PJ situation?
Frustrating, both for him and us (meaning OU fans).
In your view, who has the coaching advantage?
I’d think with Tom Hermann’s connection to Ohio State and Urban Meyer has done well against Stoops before.
Love Stoops, but the nod has to go to Meyer (as much as I hate to say it, b/c I think Meyer is a smug prick. Though he’s also earned the right to be.)
I was at the game on Saturday and there were many times that OU was lucky ULM does not have a more accurate QB. Whats going on with the secondary issues we have seen? Do you expect the problems to continue? They were suppose to be the strength of the D.
I def think they will continue to improve as the season goes on, but not enough to the point I’ll be overly confident in them. Just haven’t seen anything to suggest at this point why I’d feel differently.
Is Lampkin full go in practice
Have heard talk of an injury, but thought that was more during fall camp.
Does OU still have a chance with Chaisson? It seems like we have 1 more OLB spot left.
He told a lot people recently that he was done with OU but he’s visiting so clearly there is still interest.
This may have been asked/answered earlier. If so, disregard. Honestly, do you think our oline be able to open up enough running lanes against tOSU for our running game to be productive?
If they run right at them. The nose tackle will be a problem, so we need to see a lot of double team, down blocks etc. OU has the horses up front to win, but they need to commit to the run and let the hosses wear em down.
I love that Nose…Landers I believe is his name
Animal
Who would best suit our needs to compliment Draper and finish out this class’ ILB spot, Hines or Phillips?
Both good but Phillips was apparently very impressive in coverage at the Rivals camp and I believe he was at the Bama camp as well and clearly impressed them
That’s what I figured, but either one would make me ecstatic!
Do we see any wildcat formations this week?
I’ll say no, but would love to be wrong.
Is Omar Manning still high on us or does it look like Texas and TCU and others are in the lead?
Thats a mystery to me. All I’ve heard is he’s close to pulling the trigger and the schools are OU, TCU and Texas
Do you think Meyer talking with Herman about OU is an advantage at this level?
yes
What’s the main difference between the Baylor/Texas offensive system and ours? Is it just how wide you split the receivers? Do we just not have QBs with the arm strength to do that?
The biggest difference is no hesitancy on their part to take deep shots down the field, while OU seems to be almost the exact opposite at times.
What position will Mark Stoops have on the OU staff next year?
lol, they might have to create one just for him.
Someone mentioned earlier this week about needing this game to not only win commits, but keep the current ones in the fold. Who exactly are we worried about if we had a bad game this weekend?
What do you think is the most important thing OU can do in terms of winning over the recruits this weekend? a tech 08 crowd? a W? show off the new stadium/facilities?
win. win. win.
How real are our chances with Wilson? It seems we get the generic uodates but the texas tfb is getting alot of info on him
Depends on how the season plays out. If Texas finishes strong, I think they’re tough to beat. Like Draper for OU, he’s an In-State Texas kid. Kids want to rep local schools.
OU is behind Texas. If Texas continues to do what they’re doing, I think he ends up there. But clearly the Sooners are somewhere in his top 3-4. I’d wager OU is 2 right now. Just don’t buy Marvin will go far.
Do you guys know how motivated the coaches & players are for the Ohio st game? I know Bob Stoops has had some pretty big games but this Ohio St game is huge and has alot riding on it.
I think anything but all in would be an understatement.
I’m quite confident the stakes of this one are not lost on anyone, coach or player alike.
Always always comes down to trenches. Does our online take them?
I’m not confident in that based on what we’ve seen so far.
If the Secondary gets right, I think this Defense has a very stout D Line.
They’re going to have a fight on their hands. Been watching Ohio State line and they’re strong, quick, aggressive. But if the Sooners stick with the downhill attack, I think they’ll start to have success. No one can keep stopping Perine and Mixon imo.

Who is the one difference maker on tOSU’s offense other than JT Barrett?
Who is the one difference maker on tOSU’s offense other than JT Barrett?
When the this weekend is all said and done, we will be talking about which underclassmen as the next great sooner?
Gallimore, Mykel Jones, Abdul Adams

two minute warning
Who’s the better Db for OU Jaylon Johnson or Kobe Boyce’s? Are we still good with them?
Haven’t seen Jaylon Johnson. Have a shot at both.
Do you think Wren would be a better matchup for Landers?
Tough to say because he’s strong but he’s always got good lateral quickness.
With the recent de interest who are we un sure of?

Is Hines slipping from OU’s grip?
Looking that way, IMO.
Will have a note about it tmrw

Bledsoe’s upside…..give me a comparison player.
I’m not good at this but he’s dang good!

Alright, that’s a wrap for tonight.
Once again a BIG thanks for everyone who took part!
