Open Post | Weekend, Sept. 9th – Sept. 11th (UPDATED Sat., 7:08 pm)

Team Note | Cornerback: Earlier this week, TFB mentioned that Michiah Quick was getting first team reps at cornerback, opposite Jordan Thomas, with Parrish Cobb running second team. We have since learned that between the two, it sounds like Cobb had the better week of practice.

Still no final word on who will start against Louisiana-Monroe, but TFB was told that Cobb was taking the first team reps later in the week. We’ll of course see how it shakes out on Saturday when the defense runs out there for the first time, but also fair to say we probably aren’t going to learn all that much about either CB spot this weekend given the level of competition. – (Super K)

Cornerback Technique: I (K) considered doing a full write up on the subject of cornerback technique as it relates to the Oklahoma cornerbacks, but for now I’ll just mention something that has been on my mind lately.

When people talk about a cornerback who gets beat down the field, it’s usually talked about in terms of athleticism – namely: speed, hip flexibility, explosion, etc. In some cases the lack of an athletic trait is the primary problem. And I would say that, more so than anything else, was the case for Oklahoma last week against Houston.

Make no mistake, Oklahoma has cornerbacks on their roster with all the athletic ability needed to play the position. We’ve seen Parrish Cobb. We’ve seen PJ Mbanasor. We’ve seen Antoine Stephens (in the spring game). All of them have the requisite athletic requirements to both play and succeed at corner. Likewise, everyone has areas they can improve upon. Bigger guys like Mbanasor and Stephens are built higher, hence their natural COD isn’t going to be on par with someone like Cobb. On the flip side, smaller corners like Cobb get down with more ease.

Look at someone like Jordan Thomas, for example. While not the fastest cornerback on the team, he plays with good technique and, as such, is beat deep far less often. Specifically, Thomas stays square to the LOS much longer than the other guys we’ve seen on the field to date. There was a particular moment in last week’s game, where Thomas walks up into a press position and at the snap he feigned a jam. Instead of exploding up field, the receiver was forced to move laterally for a moment. Already Thomas has saved himself a moment in defense.

But more importantly he sees the receiver’s release and was able to slide over and get in front. Within the first few yards, and now in front of the receiver, Thomas gets both hands on him and is able to widen the receiver’s route. In short, he allowed himself to stay square for a longer period of time, delaying the route, and helping himself stay “connected” to the receiver. Now the receiver’s up-field progress is delayed, and Thomas is able to feel him, naturally turn in to, and get his body into the body of the receiver. At the end of the route, he continues to lean and then locate the ball.

Contrast that with what you’ll see from a young cornerback like Cobb (or what we saw from Mbanasor last year). The young CB often allows the receiver to get into his route immediately. In press coverage, it takes time to marry the hands and the feet. Almost as soon as that receiver releases, the young CB is opening up to run side-by-side with his man. But in doing so, they haven’t widened the receiver. He’s simply made it a foot race, a race that is tough to win since the receiver is already starting in the right direction.

Additionally, the young CB isn’t “connected” to the receiver. So in the midst of their high speed attempt at recovery, they are worrying about leaning into the receiver while the receiver drifts and tries to figure out when they should turn and find the ball. Again, all this while being concerned about getting back into phase because he was likely stacked during the turn. – (Super K)

K’Lavon Chaisson: A little over a month ago, there was a lot of buzz around the idea that it was more a matter of ‘when’ not ‘if’ 2017 DE/OLB, K’Lavon Chaisson (Houston, TX) would commit to Oklahoma. Then a little over a week ago, as we noted on the site, we started hearing that Chaisson’s interest in the Sooners had waned some. Folks around Chaisson said the reason for that was the commitments of fellow 2017 LBs, Addison Gumbs & Kenneth Murray.

In talking to a couple sources, it sounds like a new narrative to Chaisson’s recruitment has turned up. TFB was told by two separate sources that earlier in the summer, Chaisson wanted to commit to OU but wanted to do so with the condition he would be permitted to still take official visits. As many of you are aware, taking visits after you have committed has generally been something Bob Stoops has kind of frowned upon.

According to that TFB has been told, things between OU & Chaisson have been quiet lately and the 2017 LB is no longer expected to be in Norman next week for the Ohio State game.

K’Jakyre Daley: A 2017 OLB/DE who will be in Norman next weekend, however, is K’Jakyre Daley (West Palm Beach, FL). As we’ve mentioned previously, the biggest threat to OU for Daley’s commitment at this time appears to be Notre Dame.

Jacob Phillips: 2017 LB Jacob Phillips (Nashville, TN) is expected to visit Oklahoma this weekend. You’ll recall Phillips visited the Sooners last spring and when TFB spoke with him following that visit, he raved about the trip. Earlier this summer, Phillips released his Top 5 schools which he will (or has) officially visited: Oklahoma, Alabama, Oregon, LSU & Notre Dame.

Phillips visited Oregon last weekend and plans on wrapping up his visits in the coming few weeks. Phillips tells TFB that he plans to make a decision announcement sometime in mid-October. – (Super K)

Chuck Filiaga: In case you missed it, Oklahoma 2017 offensive line target Chuck Filiaga (Aledo, TX) released his Top 10 earlier this week:

Greg Rodgers: Just a quick note on defensive tackle prospect, Greg Rodgers (Las Vegas, NV). As many of you are probably aware, USC has long been seen as the team to beat in Rodgers’ recruitment.

However, TFB recently spoke to someone with knowledge of Rodgers’ recruitment and asked if USC continues to struggle season what that might mean moving forward. “It’ll definitely help Oklahoma. I know he likes UCLA as well, but USC is the tougher out. If they struggle, it opens that door wider (for OU),” this person said.

Rodgers is expected to be in Norman next week for the Ohio State game. – (Super K)

– UPDATE (Fri., 10:25 am): Actually got word just a little bit ago from one of K’Lavon Chaisson’s coaches that he WILL in fact be in Norman for the Ohio State game after all. Just wanted you all to have the latest, carry on.

– UPDATE (Fri., 11:04 am): More visitors for this weekend.

2017 DE Joshua Paschal (official)
2017 LB Levi Draper – OU commit
2017 QB Chris Robison – OU commit
2017 OL Creed Humphrey – OU commit
2017 DB Justin Broiles – OU commitADDED
2018 DE Jalen Redmond – ADDED
2017 DB Robert Barnes – OU commitADDED
2017 WR Charleston Rambo – OU commitADDED
2018 OL Morgan Moore – ADDED
2018 WR Sean Shaw – ADDED

UPDATE (Friday, 8:25 pm):

UPDATE (Saturday, 9:30 am): Since our initial report regarding the injury to Alex Dalton we’ve received further clarification and it appears that the nature of the injury is such that he may be able to play through it. As mentioned, however, Dalton is expected to suit up today but as of Friday night was not yet cleared to play.

UPDATE (Saturday, 2:29 pm): Looks like Sooners are down another man…

UPDATE (7:08 pm): As you all know by now, Jarvis Baxter is playing in today’s game. Clearly the source’s information that was passed on to Brandon was inaccurate. Our sincerest apologies for this error.

Great stuff K. Thanks for explaining a little on the CB’s. Interesting about Chaisson, it seems like the coaches are tightening it up a little. I can see both sides of it, but if there isnt a spot, there isn’t a spot.

  • BoomSoonBri says:

The charade that is recruiting! OU didn’t want to take Chaisson if he was going to take visits…that might have hurt with Gumbs who was definitely committing soon. Now that Gumbs is in the fold, we do want Chaisson, but we don’t want to get burned.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

      It’s definitely a game.

OU takes Chaisson and lets him make visits. He likes UT or aTm down the road, and changes his commit. OU might have stopped recruiting other LB’s. It’s a thin line to walk, but I’m going to trust our staff on this one.

I guess we’d take Daley if he wants to commit and shut it down immediately. Otherwise, we still have time to push for Chaisson.

Great write up K! Those are things most of us just don’t understand. My question would be have we seen the last of Auston? I know he’s small but he sure plays hard. Talent must prevail at some point?

Thanks for the CB technique 101 K! We love that stuff.

Sounds like OU is in trouble at CB position

  • soonerfw says:

In discussing the CB position I think at this point the Dakota Austin ship has sailed. You talk about COD and all the intangibles that come with that position and he just doesn’t have it. Parrish Cobb for instance can be that island corner. He is bigger, faster and has top end speed to recover. Think of Marcus Walker when looking a Cobb both played as true freshman and have a world full of talent. Sure he’s going to take his lumps but you have to ride with him in hopes that he improves throughout the season. For the life of me I don’t understand why Mike Stoops runs a 3-4. In this league it doesn’t work for the simple fact we haven’t recruited over the years to run this defense. Stoops has long been a 4-2-5 guy which in this defense allows you to put your 5 best athletes on the back end. Also you can help the Corners in man coverage by rolling the safety to wide side of the field on passing downs. If we are to get more consistent play out of the other Corner I would love to see us run more of the one high Safety Cover 1 look. It seems to have worked against Baylor last year. BOOMER!!!!

    • Birddawg says:

DL is our best grouping. No doubt in my mind the 4 man front got more pressure in the UH game. Want to help your young corner? Give him a consistent disruptive pass rush. hopefully we get to see that going forward.

    • SoonerfanTU says:

I like the Marcus Walker comparison.

    • AMKing00 says:

The issue with the 3-4 for the Sooners is the DEs they use are not big enough to man the 4i. Your normally want them longer and bigger like 6’4″-6’5″/295-300 for example to be able to take on OTs and even double teams at times to eat up blockers for LBs to run free. Instead OU has guys that are 6’2″/265, 270, etc. Even Dimon at 6’2″/285 is still not ideal in this position. Against Houston they did a great job stopping the run but against the better/bigger OL like Clemson they have struggled mightily to stop the run. The Sooners best ‘DE’ right now is Charles Walker but has been the most effective when he is at the 3-tech, which imo is exactly what he projects at for the next level. Austin Robert has the length you want to see at 6’6″ but is listed at only 270 right now so would have liked to see him up around the 290 range.

Now looking into the future they do have guys on the roster that have the frames to carry this weight like Amani Bledsoe, Kenneth Mann & Gabriel Campbell. All three being guys I think need to get reps this year and am hoping to see them Saturday vs La Monroe.

      • soonerfw says:

I agree to run the 3-4 you need the personnel at this point the guys are not there. You look at Bama who typically runs a 3-4 they have the correct personnel. In that they have gap players who can stuff the run and penetrate to cause problems in the passing game. Their inside backers are 6-3 to 6-4 250 and can hold up against teams that run. Outside backers are great in that they can cover in space and make plays on the edge. I think for OU right now the correct call is to 4-2-5. You can play Walker and Romar outside shade of center and let them two gap the run game and penetrate up field in 3rd and longs. Move Bledsoe and other guys his size to the edge asking them to set edge in run game and pass rush. Striker for all his great play is and was a liability in the passing game. The advantage of the 4-2-5 allows you to spin down a guy and play the run and pass. Would like to see Stoops get creative and use Steven Parker as that box safety who can run support and cover. We need to get other guys reps Saturday lets see what DeBerry and Kelly can do.

        • LBS says:

The only actual spot I can see that Alabama really has a size advantage on OU in the 3-4 is the NG. Da-Ron is 319 but we have Wade listed at 310ish. The IBs are both 6’1/230ish at Bama where Tay and Jordan evans are 240, and 235. The OLB are a little bigger at 6’3=230/240ish (esp tim williams), but OBO is listed around 240 himself. I don’t think our size at LB or even DE is too much of a concern, I mean we play in the nickel most of the time. The problem IMO is more gap integrity, and that we constantly have LBs and DBs line up 8 yds off, hard to blitz that way. I agree getting Deberry and Kelly in for sure, and using Steven Parker all over the place because he’s just so multiple he could play any position in the secondary without much of a drop off.

          • KJ1123 says:

They (Bama) manhandled that SC line. The thing I took from watching their front seven is that they’re really fast.

          • LBS says:

Scary fast. Jonathan Allen and Tim Williams looked as fast Striker on those snap counts but twice the size.

  • SoonerBredCD says:

In your opinion, is OU out with Chaisson? Or vice versa?

  • kt-raida says:

How come this same thinking isnt hurtng Texas? Like when they took 5 DT’s last tear.

    • Soonerbred says:

I don’t know for sure, but I don’t know if even TX knew they were getting all 5. Most committed on signing day which may have led to a couple coming that they did not know about. I believe there was a post here or on the TX board where some of those guys weren’t happy about everyone being there.

    • LBS says:

it worked out for them. i think in recruiting sometimes its every bit as important to make your opponent weaker as it is to make you stronger. Stealing those DTs definitely achieved both.

  • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

    K (or anyone),

How does staying square and backpedaling relate?

Does staying square mean that you backpedal farther?

    • Soonerbred says:

Not K, but the longer you can stay square and in the backpedal, the longer you stay in a noncommitted position as it relates to the receiver. Once the CB turn his hips he has committed either inside or outside. If he has guessed wrong, recovering to the opposite side takes time and leads to open receivers. Anyone else feel free to correct me.

  • AMKing00 says:

To make a point off of K’s note on Jordan Thomas and his ability to re-direct a WR’s path with a feint move of a jam, that small delay can make all the difference in getting to a QB. This was why I was saying OU should have been playing press coverage to give the rush more time to get to Ward. Not saying that the CBs wouldn’t get beat from time to time but when you are physical with a WR at the LOS it can throw off the timing with the QB and next thing you know he gets happy feet and makes bad decisions.

I would like to see the Sooners CBs be more physical and actually get their hands on the receivers at the snap instead of lining up like they are going to press and then not laying a hand on them at all. Play press, bring heat and make the QB uncomfortable. Force their hand.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

That sounds exactly how teams seem to slow down OU’s offense at times. Frustrate the WR’s and QB. I would love to see that as well.

    • Paul Lott says:

exactly..it causes problems..allows you to shake up the qb..opens up defensive schemes ..but as you said..you can get burned..that’s why you have to engage the outside linebackers and safety over the top..so they can attack down hill..I mean if the qb hands the ball off let’s go inside ..to the baxkfield..if the CBS are 10 yards deep they are completely out of the play and opens the run game up for the opposing offense..this defense is not on the same page.

  • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Are guys like PJ and Stephens in the doghouse? Seems if we are going to to press or act like it, why not have your bigger more physical guy’s out there? Or are they just not as good as everyone thought? I’m still scratching my head over their lack of at least a shot at starting.

    • RDC212 says:

Not sure, but unless Mbanasor has just not made any progress since the Tulsa game last year I am not a fan of keeping the kid in the doghouse if that’s the case. If that’s true, it’s not a great message to send new recruits too. In fact, it’s one of my rubs with Stoops excessive allegiance to his veterans.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

I agree. He says the best players will play but only in extreme situations do underclassmen really play. At least move him to safety or something and give the kid a shot.

        • RDC212 says:

Like I said, one of my major rubs with Stoops. My perception is he does it as a way of coaching safe, because when the veterans get beat he can always fall back on their veteran status as justification for playing them over better talent.

          • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

Absolutely. But even Saban and Urban aren’t scared to play true freshman or rsfr at skill positions.

          • RDC212 says:

            Exactly.

          • LBS says:

I would disagree most years, as the difference in talent is often mitigated by sound assignment football. This year though, even the experienced players are prone to stupid mental mistakes so why not try the young bucks.

    • Soonerbred says:

Maybe I’m in the minority but I didn’t think that PJ was in all that bad of a position, but just didn’t adjust while the ball was in the air. Despite his struggles I thought the future was bright.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

I agree 100%. If he turns his head against Tulsa we might be arguing he should’ve started last year.

I hope we still go after Chaisson , i hope he changes his mind about the Ohio st game.

    • bommer85 says:

if its true that he wanted to commit but Bob said no visits if u do thats pretty dumb to turn him away imo

      • KJ1123 says:

Bob wouldn’t say that, that statement would come from who his main recruiter is. I can see Thibbs saying that.

        • bommer85 says:

i hear you…just saying i don’t think we are in a position to turn away top 100 talent…if you over recruit a few guys so be it(linebacker last year we told to look elsewhere) but to turn away top 100 talent is plain dumb

          • KJ1123 says:

You’re right we’re not. I mean, I personally would say , “yes go for it if you want to, that’s why schools have it in their budget to pay for those trips for you and your family”. Then I would have them come back fro an unofficial or something. Sometimes they forget theyre dealing with kids.

      • SoonerSpock says:

What Bob tells recruits is take all your visits before you commit. Don’t create false expectations by committing and continuing to take visit. He is merely telling recruits to go through the recruiting process in a manner respectful to all parties. Step up and act like a man.

He does not want commits switching the last week before signing day and leaving himself without a replacement. If he allows the recruit to commit and continue to take visits he has to tell another recruit he wants him when in fact he may not have a scholarship available for him. Hence a contingency offer. That is not a good recruiting practice.

  • LandThieve3 says:

You can have good technique at the LOS all you want, but if you also don’t have the awareness to get your head around quickly to locate the football and also have ball skills, you will get beat repeatedly on back-shoulder throws and unintentional PI’s on under thrown balls.

    • RDC212 says:

A good back shoulder throw beats NFL corners all the time. Gotta give Ward credit for those, but to your point if you don’t have the physical tools to challenge big physical receivers it doesn’t matter. Plus, those physical tools can often times make up for an error in technique.

      • SoonerSpock says:

The shortcoming is Saturday’s defense was its design to force Ward to beat us with his arm and remove his running game effectiveness. We were very successful implementing the defensive game plan. Un

Unfortunately Ward threw the ball much better against us than he did in 2015 and we did a very poor job defending the back shoulder throws. However coming into the game no one would have predicted Ward had the ability to hit 9 of 11 3rd and long throws 8 which were for first downs.
        .
S**t happens! That is why they make the bumper sticker.

        • RDC212 says:

Very true. Sometimes you gotta tip your cap. I still feel we need to go away from Austin at CB, and I’m aggravated Stoops waited till now to make that determination.

    • Birddawg says:

Back shoulder throws is exactly the throw that defeats press man coverage.. not all the QBs we face will be able to make that throw.
Inherently corner reads a foot race and doesn’t want to get beat deep.
It especially doesn’t help to have sloppy technique at the LOS because you end up trying to carry more momentum forward chasing the WR and suddenly the WR stops.
      Easy completion.
Jam properly and it completely disrupts timing of the route buying time for a pass rush etc .. don’t jam properly and you’re chasing out of position.

  • Mark slavin says:

What recruits are visiting for the game?

  • LottsSocks says:

K – thank you. Excellent info on CB technique. We would all like to see a full write-up when you have the time. Thanks again!

  • SoonerfanTU says:

I’d play Cobb. He’ll get a game against ULM, a game against a tough Ohio State team that isn’t known for downfield passing, a bye week, and a week of prep before TCU. Throw him out there and get him ready. It sounds like no matter who we put out there, we’re going to have to scheme some help his way at times. Might as well play the kid that has impressed since the minute he stepped on campus.

Side note…..how bad would things look at CB had we not landed Cobb right before the season started?

    • RDC212 says:

Without being in practice I’d probably start Cobb too, but give Quick some reps as well. Just ridiculous it had to come to this to figure out Austin just doesn’t have it.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Austin did enough last year to get a look. And honestly, I’m not so sure we aren’t giving up early on him. He’ll never be a star, but I think he is better than he showed last week.

        • RDC212 says:

It was obvious in the spring game he didn’t have the tools against bigger more physical guys. You also can’t tell me that didn’t show up in camp either. If it didn’t, we got major problems at WR.

          • Maranatha846 says:

I wouldn’t put too much stock in how a guy looks against our receivers.

          • RDC212 says:

What are you getting at exactly?

          • Maranatha846 says:

I guess it’s this: Our receivers don’t have the skills at getting separation that other teams receivers do. Our guys can do a good job covering ours in practice, but that’s not a good guage for how they will do against receivers that UH, tOSU, TCU, Texas, use.

          • RDC212 says:

That’s a major problem then. But to counter your point, we’ve heard from multiple sources out receivers were gaining separation on shorter to mid range routes and mayfield just held the ball.

    • Ryan says:

EVERYBODY in the country wanted Quick at CB out of high school. I say give him a chance. He’s our most talented CB.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

That was 2-3 years ago. And the list of players that everybody wanted out of HS that falter in at the college level is a long list. Not saying that is Quick, but if Cobb is out performing Quick in practice, why in the world would you start Quick over Cobb? Give me the guy that has impressed since his first practice with the team, and the guy that is a freshman.

        • Ryan says:

I say let them split reps in the first half then against the 1’s.

          • SoonerSpock says:

I say let Coach Cook and Mile Stoops make that decision and ignore the opinions of Soonerfan TU, Ryan and Sooner Spock. I expect that more than one CB will get reps and probably three will in addition to Jordan Thomas.

from reading interviews with Cooks, it sounds like OU’s policy is that they recommend holding off until the kids pretty darn sure he wants to go to OU. If you’ve read anything about Jordan Austin’s recruitment, it could be a similar story. It may not necessarily play out as cold as you’re making it sound.

    • Fear The Magic says:

In general I agree but its really a crap shoot. For instance in this case say that Bob said ok you can take other visits. Chiasson commits and because of that Gumbs goes elsewhere. Chaisson then becomes enamored with UT and Charlies recruiting voodoo magic and then you have neither. Its kind of like picking your poison.

      • AgedBill says:

        Well said!

      • SoonerfanTU says:

Yep. Each situation is different, but OU can’t just let kids commit to save a spot then take “trips” to their 2nd and 3rd favorite schools.

        • Fear The Magic says:

What it comes down to is this. OU was./is in good shape with top rated LBs this year so Bob probably figured that he didnt want to risk holding a spot. If it was a position like DL ( where we dont have nearly as many quality options ) say Wilson wanted to commit but take other visits Im pretty sure Bob would have been ok with that.

      • bommer85 says:

i hear you. and it is a very good point. i just think we are in a spot with this 3-4 where we have plenty of OLB/DE spots where we need playmakers. and to turn away top 100 talent just sounds crazy

  • KJ1123 says:

K’Lavon, look, take your officials, OU is not going to turn you away regardless of whether or not Bob frowns upon it. The majority of college coaches frown upon it even if they say its cool to go. But dont drag it out until Feb.

I’ve been watching Galavant this week. Don’t judge me…There is a lot of singing, but it’s hilarious.

    • KJ1123 says:

Netflix is blocked for me, so Im stuck with TFB. I mean…I love TFB!

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

      That movie is fantastic.

    • cush creekmont says:

I like SPR, but Band of Brothers with the multiple episodes and real events, beats SPR. The other HBO series, The Pacific was very good too.

      • ouwooferman says:

Every Kid in high school should have to watch either one. Being thankful for those that stood before you to ensure your life/quality is absent.

        • cush creekmont says:

We baby-boomers grew up with those vets. Knowing them and their stories directly and better than the subsequent generations, makes it easy for us to understand. I only wish people had to endure one day of what it was like (and may well be again) to live under a Hitler, Stalin, or Tojo occupation. They would then appreciate how lucky they are to have had their grandfathers or great grandfathers sacrifice so much for them.

    • Birddawg says:

Dirty Dozen is another good one

  • Richard Gray says:

Stars and what a player has done in high school has no meaning in college. Start the best players no matter grade. Time to earn your spot

  • Paul Lott says:

jam…that’s important. I’m glad you mentioned that. the jamming of the reciever throws the timing off . the qb gets nervous because the route is potentially broken or at least the timing is.it sets up the opportunity to send the corners on a blitz. it engages the outside linebackers and a safety over the top..allows the defense to run down hill.at the very minimum it forces the offense to adjust..our corners rarely jam, they are always off by about 10 yards. also if you jam you can peak into the back field..in my opinion, if you give the fastest guys on the field a 10 yard head start..your smoked. I thought we were in the presence of Bobby Bowden for minute. great read and excellent points.

  • Jesse says:

I may have missed this but anyone know how the protocol is going with Dahu? Has he been cleared or still out?

  • Paul Lott says:

ok guys I sorta proofed this…kinda..take it easy on me . lol

  • Defend Colfax says:

I see a lot of fans scared of losing recruits but they seem to be a pretty tight group with quite a few that grew up sooner fans. This gives me faith. The new stadium is great but honestly I think the fans get more of a kick out of it. I think a lot of people are overlooking the impact Headington Hall has made. If you haven’t checked it out you should. They did a really great job and a lot of kids seem to enjoy the concept.

What’s the word around the Phillips block? Kid seemed really high on us and in that rivals 100 interview it sure seemed as if OU was the top dog but since then I haven’t really heard anything regarding him.

      • Jordan Esco says:

Still high on OU, but also not necessarily in a rush to make a decision just yet.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I think right now OU is the favorite but I dont really like that he has 4 visits coming up this month after us at big time schools.

        • SoonerFan92 says:

He’s already taken an official visit to Oregon so he will only have three visits left after us. Not trying to nit-pick, but I hope that makes yOU feel better about OUr chances with him.

          • Fear The Magic says:

After us he goes to Notre Dame, Alabama and LSU. Those are three pretty big stumbling blocks.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

Yes, they most definitely are, but at least we have a good feeling that we are in the lead after he has already taken unofficial visits to all of those schools. Hopefully the officials aren’t going to change his way in thinking.

          • Ura Mazin says:

Yeah, all of those schools have boosters with deep pockets.

    • cush creekmont says:

      Okay! Keep’em comin’ – I’m finally caught up 🙂

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Thanks for the write up K. I really don’t understand how DB’s don’t have that killer attitude. i know when I played DB I took everything so personal. I couldn’t stand when and if someone beat me. I want guys who will destroy the receiver at the line and not even let them get into their routes. With most of these offenses being so heavily reliant on timing it makes sense to level these dudes at the LOS.

  • @DallasSooner says:

Duvonte Lampkin opinions? Is he going to see the field some? I thought his HS tape was about as impressive as any Dlineman i’ve ever seen. But that was HS and this is college. Thoughts?

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Still waiting myself. We need some big eaters up front, IMO. I’m thinking, just on measurables, a Lampkin/Overton/Gallimore front would be hard to stop. But with our rotation level, that he still isn’t getting on the field is quite a surprise to me.

      • Jed says:

If we’ve got legit two deep on the D line, why not alternate series and turn ’em loose at hyperspeed?
Yes, you’d lose a bit of continuity, but you’d have fresh legs and overabundance of piss and vinegar. And the opposing O line would be constantly forced to rethink.

      • Jed says:

  • Jesse says:

Joshua Paschal has teams like Clemson/USC/Tenn/ND in his top 7 has anyone watched his tape? And opinions? I just turned it on for a second and he seemed really slow but was always where he needed to be. (Obviously not an expert, don’t roast me too hard)

    • Matt says:

he had really good measurables out at the Opening. Had a 37.5″ vert.

    • Jordan says:

Yeah I didn’t see the slow thing you were talking about. He isn’t going to run a 4.5, but he is 6′ 3″ 253 lb who ran a 4.75 at the opening. I will take that… Also looks like if Alabama, ND, Clemson, USC like him, he is probably pretty good.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

Slow might not be the word for it, but I also thought that he wasn’t “quick” off the line like some of the guys that are getting love from those schools. With all that said what do I know? He could be the next great that comes through Norman.

K’Lavon Chaisson: ESPN ranked 4* 53rd overall player, 85 overall, #5 DE. Rivals has him a 3* #28 DE in the country. Not ranked on an overall basis. Which of these analysis is most accurate?

      • jmshake says:

Do any sites ever agree on this stuff? It seems not.

        • Dustin says:

Different criteria and biases across the sites. I just look at the 247 composite. It averages everyone’s rankings. If there’s film, I watch it. I trust my eyes more than recruiting “experts”.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Ask in three or four years.

      • jmshake says:

I mean, that’s really the only way to handle it. I wish recruiting rankings were relevant. Although they seemed to nail it on Ed Oliver.

    • BD says:

247 sports composite is the best and their they have him as a top 100 player, kid is really good.

    • Scott says:

      Rivals is trash imo.

    • John Garner says:

ESPN. At least the guys there actually played college ball. But again I’ll go with whoever the coaches recruit. They know who fits their schemes.

    • SoonerSpock says:

I would choose 247Sports composite rankings which is combines Rivals, Scout, ESPN and 247Sports to derive a consensus evaluation of all of the nation’s recruits.

Following is an analysis of how the 32 members of the 2015 NFL first round broke down by star rankings.

      Five stars: eight (25 percent)

      Four stars: seven (21.9 percent)

      Three stars: 15 (47.8 percent)

Two stars or lower: two (6.2 percent)

A ha! More than half of last year’s first rounders were no better than three-star recruits. Definitive proof that those stars don’t matter, right?

Well … not if you consider the broader dispersal of those stars. Compare those percentages above to the percentage of five-stars among all 2011 recruits (the class that produced the majority of those draft picks.)

      Five stars: 26 (0.7 percent)

      Four stars: 336 (8.9 percent)

      Three stars: 971 (25.7 percent)

Two stars or lower: 2,441 (64.7 percent)

So despite comprising less than 1 percent of all recruits, five-stars accounted for a quarter of 2015 first-rounders. Meanwhile, more than 90 percent of all recruits are designated as being three stars or less, yet their representation in the first round is nearly half that.

Put it this way: About one in four five-star recruits like No. 1 pick Jameis Winston goes on to become a first-rounder, but only about one in 64 three-star recruits like No. 2 Marcus Mariota does. Any generalizations about star-ratings that use NFL rosters as justification are giving disproportionate weight to the outliers.

  • Sooners4Life27 says:

Talk to my friend on the team again on Thursday as thats when we have class together. Take all of this however you want. You can believe it whole heartedly or not at all I really don’t care and again this is one guys opinion. He said so far the morale of this team isn’t very great and he is pretty worried about the teams mental aspect right now. He said some defensive guys were pissed at Dakota Austin after the Houston game because he was on the defensive bus laughing about the video clip of him tackling guys without the ball. And the final thing he said was AD Miller is a freak and he can’t wait to see him get more of a chance in a game because he is far better than Mead.

    • Scott says:

Austin wont be playing anytime soon so we dont worry about him 😉

    • Soonerfandave84 says:

If they are mentally frail that is very bad news

      • Fear The Magic says:

        Very very bad news.
If this is the case then they better change that mentality within a week or it could get ugly against tOSU.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

If the moral problem has to do mostly with Austin then that’s fine because he won’t see any real playing time from here on out. Hopefully it wasn’t in regards to the whole team, and they will be ok mentally after they put a whoopin’ on ULM then ride the wave the rest of the season.

    • rphokc says:

if the morale observation is correct, just makes the buck game that much more important a/o pivotal

    • bommer85 says:

      it shows. sad

    • ZW_in_Austin says:

It’s good that they don’t take kindly to him laughing about it.

    • KJ1123 says:

I said it after the game. Mead should sit, period. Not just because effort, but attitude.

      • Birddawg says:

        Where is this coming from?

      • DrewChubbs says:

I think that’s the key. If you see it (being somehow, kinda sorta affiliated with the team and all), and the players see it, there has to be one guy in there that can look at his brother and say, “Step it up.” Every team I’ve ever been on, in any sport has had that happen, at various levels. And it ought to be one of those guys that have been in the trenches and come out on top more often than not.

    • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

If defensive players were pissed at Dakota laughing at him tackling dudes without the ball, then that would imply to me that the defense has some spirit, some bravado, some self-esteem, some pride, some gumption.

Dakota can laugh himself all the way to standing on the sidelines.

  • David Luc says:

Just reading about Stripe the Stadium vs tOSU. Why not all crimson with cream Terrible Towels? We need to intimidate these yahoos.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

Terrible Towels were the best invention ever. Love watching the fans twirl them while my Steelers play!

    • Jordan Esco says:

I’m beyond ready for them to come up w/ something other than Stripe The Stadium, but maybe I’m alone on that.

      • SavageSoonerEsq says:

No, you’re not alone. The home games need more than STS & Boomer Sooner chants. The Jump Around helped a little, and the videos by people like Bradford that are broadcast on the jumbo tron right before a game are pretty good. But the fans need something better than that to get them riled up. I wish I had the answer. I would be ok with the towel thing.

      • SoonerfanTU says:

I think it’s a bit played out, and not fair to those always in a white section, but I also think people make too big of a deal about it. We aren’t the only blue blood program doing this once a year recently.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

Maybe TFB could invent their own version of the “Terrible Towels” and the loyal Brainiacs could take them to the games. In turn, all the fans around them would come to the site to order their Towels. Increased site traffic for TFB’s and a new tradition at Sooner home games! 😉

      • Birddawg says:

we just need everyone to yell on 3rd down.. y do we need to stripe the stadium to get motivated for a game.
Do your part, if you need to get a few drinks in you to loosen yourself up or a redbull or whatever .. Crowd noise is much more motivational to the players than seeing the stadium zebra crap.

    • Chris White says:

I’ve been pushing for towels for a long time! I think that would be awesome or those loud clappers that we use at the Thunder games during the playoffs

    update/visitors added

  • Coach JK says:

I haven’t said much and don’t say a lot about what my sources tell me but after the post from sooners4life27 I wanted to share this: My source tells me that this team is in dire need of senior leadership and desperately lacks motivation. The play last Sat. would reiterate this fact. This is also a direct result of coaching or lack thereof. Take it for what its worth but we could be in for a long season and Bob’s seat may be growing hot.

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Thanks for sharing. Interesting from your source, we were all led to believe there is a reinvigoration among the staff and are coaching and recruiting harder than ever. Proof is in the pudding I guess.

      • KJ1123 says:

They have a leadership group….at least I know the offense has one…but to be honest, the guys in that group a kind of quiet imo. We need some “dogs” to step up bigtime.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Is Baker part of that group? He doesn’t seem to be a quiet person. Time for Perine or Mixon to step up.

          • KJ1123 says:

            Yeah Baker is.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’m pretty surprised by what you all are telling us to be honest.

          • KJ1123 says:

I think I’ve mentioned it a few times before in regards to the OL and someone having to take a leadership role. We’ve been at it for a little while now, I’m still waiting for “that guy” to step up.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

            Who exactly is “we” 🙂

          • KJ1123 says:

            Hahaha…apparently Im Barry to some.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

You’re our Barry. Who do you think may step up?

          • KJ1123 says:

As an offense, I think it should be Baker, Geno and Joe. Defense theres all kinds of guys, they just need to back it up with their play.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Interesting about Geno, I was thinking somebody who has been in the program longer but I guess there aren’t too many at WR who contribute (Shepard last year). These guys need to find their identity asap.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah that’s it. This team doesnt have an identity yet. I was thinking Geno just because of his maturity and experience.

          • Scott says:

It takes a while for a team to get a identity.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Well Saturday seems like a wonderful time to do it. Let Samaje and Mixon get all beast mode on them then hit the play action, all while keeping Baker’s jersey squeaky clean.

          • Brien Brown says:

On the D side, it should be Walker, Evans, and Thomas. IMO, or even Parker, would be sad, for them to let a guy like Jackson or Kelly be the guys to step up but, would speak well to the future!

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Maybe even throw Dimon or Romar in there. They have the experience. Dimon seems to get a little excited from time to time, a la Striker.

          • Brien Brown says:

Well either way. Someone needs to step up and get a little crazy and fired up. Mean this is beating a dead horse here and really preaching to the choir but, we need some big boys like we had in Harris and McCoy, some guys that just eat up the middle never got real hyped but, allowed the LB’s to get some good hits in. Less heart and more edge, cause we hear how much heart a lot of these teams have had they need to be more edgier and still have heart!

          • Sooner Ray says:

I may be having dinner and drinks with coach Switzer soon, if it’s you just wink and smile. 🙂

          • KJ1123 says:

If Barry says…so how about that Metz guy? Then you’ll know it’s me!

          • Birddawg says:

            You’re Robert Paulson to me.

          • SoonerFan92 says:

I think they have said in interviews that Mixon is always the first one there to congratulate his teammates or pick them up. He is one of the more vocal ones the team, I believe.

        • Coach JK says:

No Striker or Tapper on D!!!!! That about says it all. And Baker and maybe Mixon are about it on O. Be prepared because after this week we could possibly lose 3 in a row.

        • Bob Bender says:

Will loan ZuZu the Rhodesian Ridgeback.

      • SoonerFan92 says:

Yeah, I thought that we had seen somewhere on this site that this off season was the hardest this team as a whole (players and coaches included) had worked in a long time? Seems odd that the tune would change so quickly.

        • SoonerJake says:

“this off season was the hardest this team as a whole (players and coaches included) had worked in a long time?” Weve pretty much heard that every year for the past 20 years.

    • Boomer145 says:

Bob’s seat, whether you like it or not, wouldn’t even be lukewarm if the team went 6-6 this season. That my friend is a fact, again, whether we like it or not.

      • L'Carpetron Dookmarriot says:

Agreed. How can you contemplate firing someone who beat Alabama three years ago?

As a note for reference because the above is a joke (Hi, all. You’ve met me): Bama was ranked #3, OU was ranked #11. Last week’s loss was to a #11 ranked Houston while OU was ranked #4.

Secondary note: You should’t pay attention to rankings as if they are reliable, accurate, or connote fine distinctions between teams’ proficiency but whatevs.

    • Sooners4Life27 says:

yes my friend told me as well they felt the coaches really didn’t do enough for the Houston game.

    • Scott says:

The team will be ready for Ohio St!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I think the source is misreading the situation. Baker is a leader. A Thomas…

      • Soonerfandave84 says:

Maybe no one is as good as Striker was?

        At “leadering”

        • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Players are savvy these days. When you have a scholarship to OU you the player expects a chance at the NFL. Hence their motivation ought to come from within, they ought to want to play and do well for that shot, for their future and family.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah thats why I think Ahmad will be that leader! New father and all, that sets a drive in man that nothing else can

    • Chris White says:

It’s really not that bad. Were guys upset? Yeah but they have hype men and leadership. This has been one of the quieter offseasons we’ve had in a long time and that’s a testament to leadership. Besides, if he’s half the guy we believe he is, then Baker has enough swag to wake a whole damn city up!

  • Chris White says:

I have sources in the program too but simply, a win fixes all! No amount of good news has picked up the “Morale” around here either right?? The team has good leadership and good coaches they just need a win in front of their home crowd to get back on track. Simple. Oh and my sources tell me that Texass still sucks!

    • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I hope it’s a simple fix…because watching the new intro, in your newly renovated stadium, right before your 1st home game should get you a little more excited than that. #flat

presumably this would put Bobby Evans at RT, but K is still working to confirm if that is actually what they plan to do.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I think that’s what KJ has been saying. Other option being start Wren and push Alvarez to guard. Feel free to correct me if that is wrong KJ.

        • Jordan Esco says:

No, you’re right. But if they’re moving Samia to RG, that would seem to indicate Alvarez staying at center.

But then again, I’m not KJ. So what do I know 🙂

          • Jesse says:

Curious to know if you think this a better starting 5 than what we put on the field last week?

          • KJ1123 says:

Right now the two deep looks like…Brown Ford Alvarez Samia Evans. Then Mittimier Alvarez Wren Alvarez (because Dalton is presumably out) Samia.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Okay so it Mittimier would be next up. You were kidding about lack of depth. Sheesh.

          • KJ1123 says:

Yeah its thin. I mean its deep but thin you know what I mean? We have bodies.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Yep, we have warm bodies but not exactly ideal. Glad things seem to be trending up in a positive way on the OL recruiting. Got some hogs coming in.

          • KJ1123 says:

Haha yeah thats what Im told. Brown Ford Alvarez Samia Evans to start tomorrow.

          • Hotrod33 says:

Now, do you think this is OUr best 5 or too early to tell.

          • KJ1123 says:

I think its early because this will be Evans first game, since HS I think. And also I want to see Daimler play.

          • Hotrod33 says:

That is fair. Let’s hope Evans’ nerves aren’t too bad and he will play a good game. I just want to see improvement from the team overall.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Tre Brown with a TD on a 5 yard end around. Showed his speed on that play. All tied up after 2pt conversion.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Next play long TD pass for Jenks. Wow.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Pretty nice catch by CJ Moore for Union. Shamari Brooks looks pretty salty at tailback. Well over 200 yards rushing already

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Tre Brown looks like he may have tweaked an ankle or something. Kind of on a horsecollar tackle. Hopefully it’s no big deal.

  • Hotrod33 says:

I really and truly hope the coaches will let Cobb have a fair chance to solidify the CB position. Also, get some of the younger players some playing time so they can get some live in game reps to get used to the speed of the game.

    • Hotrod33 says:

That is more fans that Tulsa gets for their home games. LOL!!!!!

      • Sooner Ray says:

Truth. And the game seldom disappoints as is the case tonight.

        • Hotrod33 says:

I’ve been watching L’ville/Syra also. Jackson is the real deal. Very impressed with him. The Jenks//Union game is very entertaining that is for sure.

      • Brien Brown says:

Sadly! Tulsa is a fun place to watch games, I don’t get too many Saturday’s off or I’d go a lot more.

        • Hotrod33 says:

I have never been there to watch a game. If OU ever goes up there to play again, I will try and go. Tulsa as a whole is not a bad city.

          • Brien Brown says:

I’ve been about 5-6 times and never had a bad time. But, also think I have seen as many HS games in that stadium as I have the Hurricane lol!

  • Hotrod33 says:

As good as L’ville has been playing, Syracuse has been hanging in there.

  • brainpimp says:

Best place to catch the game tomorrow in N OKC?

  • KJ1123 says:

Welp, may have some bad news good news coming. TFB will probably report.

  • LandThieve3 says:

Excited to see how Evans does at RT. Really hope he turns out to be a good one

  • Bob Edwards says:

Starting to look like we just need to start playing the young guys and get ready for the future. Two seniors getting suspended for violation of team rules. Seems like a bunch of the upperclassmen are ready for their careers to be done.

    • CrimsonNative says:

The lack of leadership is starting to really hurt this team.

    • Coach JK says:

Exactly what I have been trying to say but some people want to question my credibility. I’m just telling what I know and the motivation and drive of this team coupled with weak leadership is going to lead to trouble. Man, I hope things change and in a hurry!!!!!!

      • KJ1123 says:

        Your credibility? How?

        • Coach JK says:

          And yours?

          • KJ1123 says:

Huh? No I was asking how did someone question your credibility.

          • Coach JK says:

Oh, just awhile back some were saying I was just upset over the loss and I was but I also know what I was told and its reliable. Not trying to start anything, I just want and hope things straighten out.

          • KJ1123 says:

I hear you. There are also skeptics on here. With me I just share what I can share, but I cant share most of it for various reasons, and if people dont believe what I share, oh well thats up to them. Personally anyone who offers up information is golden in my eyes, helps build the community on the board. I have the same worries anyone with inside info has. And Ive worried about what youre talking about since January workouts. But I think its growing pains, adversity HAS to bring out the best in this team.

          • Coach JK says:

Thats the reason I said I don’t really share most of the info I get. I hope for the best because we do have talent but I, like you, know our short comings.

          • KJ1123 says:

            Agree 100%

          • Coach JK says:

On a side note, I should probably just keep my mouth shut and root for the Sooners and let things play out, I really am a diehard fan.

      • Bob Edwards says:

A friendly word of advice coach. It’s a message board if you reported that the sky was blue someone would question you. There are lots of people on message boards that claim inside knowledge that have none. Most people are pretty skeptical because of it. Be right a large enough percentage of the time and people will believe you. Just keep reporting what you’ve heard. Credibility is earned over time. Constantly bringing up the credibility issue will make a lot of people think there must be some reason to doubt you.

      • Sooner Ray says:

For the record, I’m always listening and interested.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

Like Bob said below, most “normal” people on here love the info, you will always have some wise guy trying to jack with you. As long as all your info checks out, we will be trying to figure out who you really are in no time. We just figured out KJ is Barry Switzer. We all appreciate anything you can share, even if it isn’t good.

    • SWoods says:

I can understand something like this from an underclassman maybe, but two seniors? Not who I would want my younger guys looking up to.

      • Bob Edwards says:

The sunshine pumper in me wants to think that this is just the dregs of our bad recruiting classes getting flushed out of the system. But I think my sunshine pump is clogged right now.

        • SWoods says:

LOL, yeah I had thought the same thing. I feel we got some really good kids last class, and even better kids in this next class. Hopefully we won’t have to deal with too many more of these issues in the future.

        • Sooner Ray says:

          Better years are ahead.

Okudah has apparently reached out to Texsa. Man I know it was just one game but if Texsa continues this upward trend we could miss out on a ton of big time remaining targets. We need to beat them this year. Cannot afford to lose anymore games.

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

If anyone is not buying the PPV, I found a link that is usually reliable about showing games. http://www.vipleague.tv/sports/american-football.html
    Not positive because it’s a PPV…but try it…Here’s a screen shot

  • Randy White says:

Off topic but need help. Can’t purchase the game on PPV because I forgot my password. Anyone know how to reset your password to Soonersports? I sent them an email but no response. Geez, it shouldn’t be difficult but I can’t figure it out.
