Open Post | Weekend, Jul. 22nd – 24th (UPDATE Sun., 3:28 pm)

Image of Cameron Rising via Scout

Cameron Rising: The Sooners are, presumably, in good hands at the quarterback position for several years to come with the talented group of signal callers already on campus as well as Chris Robison currently in the fold for the 2017 class. Add to the fact you have Lincoln Riley as your offensive coordinator and quarterback coach (at least for now) and things are certainly looking solid at the position.

Still though, the pursuit of QB prospects really never ends as with every class you’re subject to turnover in a variety of different ways. You need look no further than the current situation in Norman having lost two capable backups to transfer/the MLB Draft.

To that point, the Sooners seem to have set their sights on a pair of 2018 quarterbacks as their primary targets in: Cameron Rising (Newbury Park, CA) & OU legacy, Casey Thompson (Southmoore, OK).

And it just so happens Rising was in Norman this past Wednesday with his father. It was their first time being on a college campus in the south(ish), although it’s worth mentioning Rising has some preexisting ties to the state as his great uncle resides in Ada, Oklahoma. With regards to the visit itself, Rising said “It’s different down here. You can tell OU means a lot with the facilities. Everyone is just so nice, too.”

Bob Stoops was doing his ESPN ‘car wash’ the day Rising was on campus, but that didn’t stop them from speaking. “Coach Stoops and I actually got to speak through FaceTime while he was sitting on the set of ESPN. It was crazy,” Rising said.

Rising already holds offers from Alabama, Arizona State (where his older brother is currently an offensive lineman), Michigan & LSU just to name a few. But Rising has recently come to the realization that his decision timeline may need to change as compared to what he was previously thinking. “My decision is going to come a lot quicker than I thought now.”

Rising tells TFB he will take some additional visits and then expects make his decision. Need proof that OU made an impression and will be in the mix with Rising? “I have some visits to take during the season, but we will be back for the Ohio State game at OU.” So the Sooners can already expect to host Rising a second time come mid-September.

And it wasn’t just the younger Rising that enjoyed the trip. TFB spoke with his father as well, who also offered some thoughts on playing somewhere like Norman as compared to the West coast. “You go to games in the Pac 12 and some of the time you will see the stadium half-full. It’s not like that down here in the southern states. I’d like to see Cameron experience that in college. We are coming back for the Ohio State game. They say it will be a fun one.”

Stay tuned OU fans, 2018 quarterback race could very well be a first come, first serve type of deal. – (Brandon)

Ceedee Lamb: As many of you know, former OU wide receiver commit Ceedee Lamb (Richmond, TX) is set to announce his commitment this coming Monday (July 25th). In recent weeks, most have felt this is an Oklahoma/Texas A&M battle. And our own Brandon Drumm has actually been calling this one for the Sooners for a while now.

And TFB was privy to some chatter earlier this week on the TAMU side of things that backed up Brandon’s confidence in Lamb rejoining the #SoonerSquad17. Only time will tell of course, but the Sooners could once again be on a ‘boom alert’ come Monday. – (Super K)

Jacob Phillips: Yesterday, 2017 East Nashville (TN) linebacker Jacob Phillips released his Top 5. As expected, the Sooners made the cut. Others in the mix are LSU, Alabama, Notre Dame & Oregon.

Phillips let us know he will take his official visit to Oklahoma for the September 10th match-up against Louisiana-Monroe. In terms of a commitment timeline, Phillips said he’s planning to announce sometime around mid-October.

Oklahoma has been rumored to be in Phillips’ top one or two schools for some time, so getting him on campus the day the newly renovated stadium opens will be big. – (Brandon)

Kary Vincent, Kobe Boyce & Jeffrey Okudah: 2017 Port Arthur (TX) defensive back Kary Vincent announced on Twitter that he would be committing this Sunday at 7pm (CT). If you recall, prior to Trajan Bandy’s commitment (who has now since decommitted, but more on that below) the Sooners were pushing hard for Vincent and were very much in the mix. However when Bandy, Tre Brown and Justin Broiles came into the fold, OU slowed their cornerback recruitment.

Now, however, we expect (as do many others) Vincent will commit to LSU when he announces on Sunday. And while it appears too little late to get back in with Vincent, the Sooners may still have a shot with 2017 Texas CB commit, Kobe Boyce. Who, it just so happens, is expected to be in attendance for OU’s recruiting BBQ next weekend (July 29th).

It is also possible the Sooners will be hosting elite South Grand Prairie DB Jeffrey Okudah that same day as well. Speaking recently with a couple of sources TFB has been given the distinct impression Oklahoma would like to close out their 2017 DB class with Boyce and/or Okudah.

If the OU coaches were to some how flip Boyce AND land Okudah, it could very well go down as the best defensive back recruiting class in the Bob Stoops era. – (Brandon)

– Trajan Bandy: After Bandy decommitted earlier in the week, TFB had a chance to follow up with his father regarding the decision. And among other things that were discussed, Bandy’s father told TFB they still intend to take an official visit to Oklahoma for the Ohio State game.

Bandy also plans on visiting South Carolina this weekend. And while he did release a Top 6 at the time of his decommitment, we get the sense this is primarily an Oklahoma/South Carolina/Miami battle.

In talking to Bandy’s father it was clear that OU’s pursuit of five-star DB Jeffrey Okudah, and the Sooners’ perceived success of said pursuit to date, has made an impact on some others. Okudah is the type of prospect who has the ability to come in a play from Day 1, especially given the fact he is expected to be an early enrollee. And that is simply something the OU coaches will have to contend with as they continue to recruit the position.

But at the same time, that’s kind of one of those ‘good problems’ to have if you know what we mean. – (Super K)

Tre Brown: 2017 CB commit Tre Bown let TFB know that he will be visiting Florida and Florida State sometime in early August. – (Super K)

Team Note | Parnell Motley: Today will start the team’s summer break until they return for the start of fall camp on Aug. 4th. But before they break, we wanted to pass along a quick note on true freshman CB Parnell Motley.

One source we spoke to said, “he (Motley) is going to be good. He’s a quick learner.” For an incoming freshmen, one of the most difficult things at the CB position is picking up the plays and the techniques within the calls while also being able to execute those techniques in game-time speed. We also saw last year during the Tulsa game how then freshman corner PJ Mbanasor got caught chasing receivers inside on ‘Cloud’ calls with a back set to his side. The fact that Motley is at least demonstrating early on that he can pick things up quickly is encouraging news.

And for whatever it’s worth, TFB was also told that the other two freshmen cornerbacks, Parrish Cobb and Jordan Parker, did not participate in 7-on-7’s this week. – (Super K)

UPDATE (Fri., 10:10 pm): Interesting bit of a news that Brandon was tipped off to by a source out in Georgia. It seems Oklahoma will be hosting a 2016 defensive prospect this Sunday.

  • Walter Sobcek says:

This OP is just chock FULL o’ fun facts. Will take the weekend to fully digest.

  • Raath says:

Should we be worried about Tre Brown? It seems as if he or Broiles are always giving us reason to pause.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I don’t think OU has any reason to worry about Broils. He’s been nothing but OU. Brown had me worried for a bit, but he has recently been tweeting SS17 stuff a lot lately. Both stay true to OU in the end, I believe.

    • MileHighOkie says:

I would lean toward yes. I think Broiles in the end is all OU but Brown has given cause for concern on multiple occasions. Okudah would be a great get but it might be at the cost of other recruits. On a positive note though Bandy and Brown would probably not be looking else where if they they thought we had no chance.

      • Boom says:

Brown just having some fun on recruiting trips. I would want to see some other places too but come back home – OU.

    • Super K says:

I can’t tell just yet. But in the long term I think he stays a Sooner.

    • coachjimjim says:

He is a sooner man. He wont flip. 100% confidence

Love Motley, loved his film. Antonio Perkins like.

    • Super K says:

I liked him too. All three CBs OU signed last year were great but he got the least pub it seemed.

      • Randy says:

Yeah, not sure why he had legit offers from top defenses… He is long, skilled and now we know he is picking up stuff quickly.. = Stud

      • Randy says:

I think we were lucky Durkin was only named the HC at Maryland 2 months before signing day.

  • Mark_in_VA says:

So, interesting about Lamb, and maybe I’ve been under a rock. I thought the whole thing with him was whether LSU would get involved, and when they did (or at least he thought they would) then he decommitted. Now LSU isn’t even in the picture? Anyone have the cliff’s notes on LSU and Lamb for whatever I missed under my rock?

    • Super K says:

Think it was in part due to LSU picking up a few receiving options and in part the offensive system.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

Nice work fellas, bringing the heat for the weekend OP! Thanks for all the work you guys do free of charge.

  • metzker says:

Dam what a loaded OP!!!!!!!!!!!!Thanks K and Brandon, hell all you guys!

The stadium is going to be insane. There’s a high-rise pizza place going up on campus corner. With the new video board, I’m thinking the upstairs balconies are going to be popular during the games for those without tickets.

To the Brainiacs: Boys, tomorrow is my 70th birthday. I would like a nice Boom for my birthday. I know you don’t want to disappoint me. A defensive lineman would be very nice.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks K and Brandon! Really don’t want to lose Brown. His speed reminds me of Aaron Colvin

  • Randy says:

Lots of news “in a positive way”… (See what I did there). For real though, this post brings up something we all know will happen soon. Could be the las season we see with Lincoln Riley as OC, as he will be a HC jut hope he is really, really picky.

    • Dick Bump says:

I think he’ll be here for awhile. With the talent he has coming in, he has a chance to build a hell of a resume.

      • Randy says:

But if another job like South Carolina (conference, talent, will pay) comes along it will be hard to pass up. Say a NC State or Virginia..

        • Dick Bump says:

I think he can hold out for a plum. Hopefully, he’ll do that. HC gigs have all of the non-football political crap to deal with.

    • Kevin Moore says:

Hopefully Castiglione will make it almost impossible for him to leave. Any thoughts on how far the AD and Stoops will go to keep him here?

  • Daddy R says:

Not sure if this has been posted anywhere yet, and no, before you ask, I was not searching the tejas tfb site, someone on LT posted the link, but it is interesting….

    • MileHighOkie says:

I thought that was a good read and as much as it pains me to say I thought the responses for the most part were equally interesting.

    • Bob Edwards says:

The problem I see with what he says is that he just assumes that the other conferences want to get to 16. There are some grumblings in the SEC about making 14 work.

      • Daddy R says:

True Bob. He assumes a lot, really. But I just like it that there are more people out there floating the 10+4-2=12 theory. I’m ready for OU to leave, and the more reporters I hear thinking that, the more optimistic I become. Fingers crossed. lol

    • RocketCitySooner says:

Until this week, ACC network and GOR, there was some hope that the BigXII could survive by poaching some ACC teams. That ship has sailed.

Now the emphasis in the BigXII is keeping OU and UT. No one has been able to articulate a credible scenario for that.

      • Bob Edwards says:

And taking UT with us does a very interesting thing with the GOR. Since the GOR only applies to home games whoever picks us up would get the OU-UT game every year. That makes both teams more valuable.

        • cush creekmont says:

THAT brings up an interesting thought. While we fans would scream, what IF for a period of time OU played extra road or better neutral site games? Would the GOR not apply to such games?

          • RocketCitySooner says:

The GOR grants rights to games “the right to produce and distribute all events of such member institutions that are subject to the Telecast Rights Agreements;…”. To the best of my knowledge (and, believe me, I’ve looked) the TRA has not been publicly disclosed. I’m fairly confident that lawyers for the conference and the television networks were smart enough to close any loopholes like that.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

          • cush creekmont says:

OOC games at another team’s stadium would most assuredly be within THAT teams GOR. If a conference change is made, the new conference, AWAY games would be in the home team’s TV package.

While not having many or any home games is impractical from the ticket revenue loss, it seems in theory that OU could make a schedule that forced the old conference (12-2) into much less revenue than it thought – thus speeding a negotiated settlement.

          • Bob Edwards says:

In theory, in practice we would probably end up paying a ton of lawyers fess on top of the lost revenue.

          • cush creekmont says:

Yes, could be too much to lawyers. I would suspect that some might work for less if they are big fans 🙂 I know that if texsa wanted out, they would find lawyers and a judge that would do whatever they wanted.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

Perhaps, but the point is, the GOR references the TRA and we don’t know what is actually in the TRA. I do not believe that attorneys for the networks and for the conference would leave open such a loophole. Those attorneys are paid to ensure that such loopholes don’t exist.

Besides, if those loopholes did exist, we would already be in another conference.

          • cush creekmont says:

Yes, likely for the money involved, all situations were considered and covered (as you mention – we don’t get to see the TRA).

As to the last, that depends on how badly the “powers” want to leave the 12-2. If there is/was a BI6 offer (which Boren would jump on), then that GOR/TRA is mighty powerful. If only SEC is interested, Boren wouldn’t push.

          • Bob Edwards says:

No it wouldn’t. The media rights for the game belong to the home team. In theory we could got to another conference and agree to play all away games until the GOR expires. However, a court would probably take a dim view of that. It’s also likely that there is some clause requiring a minimum number of games. GOR are used a lot in the recording industry. The artist is typically required to release a set number of albums to meet the GOR. I wouldn’t be surprised if the B-12’s didn’t have a similar clause. After all this was intended by all parties to lock them in for the length of the TV contract. I’m sure the networks had their lawyers look into it before they signed the TV contract.

          • cush creekmont says:

Lawyers argue contract language all the time. While we fans do not know the actual language, the only strong point would be IF they do have a minimum number of home games stated. Since it would be hard to imagine any team not wanting at least half home games, perhaps it was not included.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I’ll just say the GOR’s are a different beast when it comes to contract law. A lot of the wrong ideas people have on this are related to the idea that this is a typical contract situation. These are often used in the recording industry because you have a company that spends a lot of money up front to get an artist known and then expects to make that up on the back end when he sells a bunch of records. They have a very different set of rules when it comes to the courts.

          • cush creekmont says:

So, OU will become the team “formerly known as the Oklahoma Sooners”? 🙂

          • Bob Edwards says:

            Exactly!

        • RocketCitySooner says:

That doesn’t work. If you’ll remember, the home team designation rotates between UT and OU every other year. For the purposes of the GOR, the RRR is a home game for either OU or UT.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

That’s the most reasonable and thoughtful collection of comments I’ve ever seen come from the ut fanbase. Impressed that they can seem to be relatively objective.

Unfortunately, it’s all so much mental masturbation. Personally, I’d like to see OU and ut split. ut has now proven poison to 2 conferences. Yes, additional power in conference would help keep them in check, but NU, OU, and a&m (and at one time CU) is a pretty good collection of power, and it wasn’t enough to protect the XII.

I continue to be sold on OU and either KU or WVU to the SEC as the best option. But how things shake out? I don’t think anyone has a clue yet.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Wow, early Sooner daily news from Jordan and early OP from Brandon and Super K. Some facts and figures from the BBQ coming up.
    Oklahoma-6 visitors
    Texas-17 visitors
    Georgia – 11 visitors
    Louisiana – 1 visitor
    California – 2 visitors
    Missouri – 1 visitor
    N. Carolina – 1 visitor
    Some beef figures: 6-5/295, 6-7/282, 6-3/288, 6-7/330, 6-6/317, 6-2/300. Some big lineman!
2020 Qb from Georgia 6-3/175. Offers to date- Florida, Miami, N. Carolina, Syracuse, Tex A&M, Ol Miss.

  • Jordan says:

If they can land Okudah, Wilson, and Hines, which would be tough but does not seem unreasonable, this would have to be one of the better defensive classes OU has ever signed.

  • Matt says:

Man it just isn’t fair that this stuff is all free! Thanks TFB staff you guys are incredible. I know you guys want to keep the site free but I also know there is probably some level of overhead at least with the domain name and whatnot. I know myself and I’m sure plenty of other followers would be willing to support if you set something up on a “give as you feel the need to” basis!

    • Jordan Esco says:

We’re working on monetizing the site and have some promising irons in the fire, but those do not and will not involve charging for information.

We’re here for the people, not their $$$ 🙂

  • CrimsonGhost says:

I’m encouraged with the inside linebacker targets. With a top-notch prospect like Draper already on board, and having serious interest from Hines and Phillips, things are trending up.

  • Birddawg says:

One name not on the bbq list yet is Anthony Hines… any word?

  • Boom says:

K, where do we stand on LB’s. Outside of Draper, our LB targets are the following unless I miss something. Be cool to get an update.
    Phillips / Hines / Murray / Tyler Taylor / Chaissom / Gumbs

Thanks for all of your work along with Brandon. You guys are killing it.

    • SoonerFan92 says:

I’m definitely not K, but if I were to chose the ones we will end up with it will be Phillips, Hines and Chaisson. Only reason for me not to mention Gumbs is because it has been so quiet with him lately.

      • Matt says:

I think Gumbs is one of the kids people say is very quiet about his recruitment and doesn’t really let anything out about it.

        • SoonerFan92 says:

Ok. Say we lead with Gumbs along with the three that I listed above. Do we take all of them and Draper for this class?

      • Drew says:

Do we take both Phillips and Hines though? We already have Draper at ILB, do really take 3 ILBs this class?

        • Scott says:

I would take all three 🙂

          • Drew says:

Sure, just looking at it numbers wise. 2 more WR, 2 more DB, 2 more OL is 6, which puts us at 21. 2 more ILB and an OLB puts us at 24. And we need at least 2 DL and probably one more DE. Idk if that works scholly wise.

        • SoonerFan92 says:

I count 10 total (inside and outside) linebackers on the team that will be here next year on scholarship. With four of them that are ILB. That’s not counting attrition. We’ve already lost 2 wr to transfers this offseason that will go towards total scholarships, correct? I could see that hapening.

        • Michael says:

Another question, do we take Kenneth Murray if we think we are going to get Phillips and Hines? With Draper that would make 4 projected ILBs. First come first serve with Murray and Phillips and then keep open the other spot for Hines?

  • Jeff says:

Uterus think Boyce is a UT lock

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

So they only haft to have the fan areas complete for the home opener? What will not be done. Still looks like a lot to do to me.

    • Jordan says:

I took a tour of the construction for one of my classes in April. Everything for the fans (seats, suite, bathrooms, concessions, etc.) will be done by the start of the season. They told us it is a $1 million fine per game it is not finished. The rest of it (coaches office, weight room, etc.) will be done before start of next season.

      • DR LEO MARVIN says:

Well that should be doable but still a bunch of work left. I hope they do get done by the opener.

        • Jordan says:

I work for a construction company, and we freak out about liquidated damages of $1,000 per day. I can’t even imagine $1,000,000 a week. They will get it done haha

    • SoonerfanTU says:

Outside bricking and stuff might not be done. Some of the “prettying up” of certain aspects of the SEZ. Maybe the urinals don’t have cakes in them for that first game. Stuff like that.

    • blaster1371 says:

I thought I read somewhere that the locker room, meeting rooms and coaches offices will be done mid season or November to be exact. I remember when I read it that I thought it was good timing for recruiting.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

So Bandy doesn’t like the competition? Cool. Moving on.

This is shaping up to be a ridiculously talented defensive class.

  • Dick Bump says:

    Interesting stuff. Thanks!

  • KJ1123 says:

Great stuff this morning. The Bandys are being honest but at the same time its like come on. If you consider yourself one of the best in the nation you dont have anything to worry about. Come in and ball out.

    • Dick Bump says:

Typically, there’s 5 defensive backs on the field at one time. The opportunity is there, but there’s always competition at OU. If it wasn’t Cobb or Okudah, it would be some other stud.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Bob has proven over the years, he is going to play his best players, regardless of age. If yOU can play, he will get yOU on the field.

      • KJ1123 says:

Thats all there is to it. If youre the baddest db on the field and the best amongst the wolves we got, you’ll be on the field and you’ll enjoy the ride.

    • Indy_sooner says:

TBH, I like how he’s handled this and respect him more for it and really do see this as a 17/ 18 yr old getting pressured from his inner-circle. It also doesn’t hurt the U that they now have Richt leading things rather than clueless Al Golden. Now personally, I would rather train and learn with the best, so the prospect of landing Okudah should entice recruits not turn them away, but I am also not in their shoes and certainly not 17.

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

He wants to play right away no doubt. Where does he have a better chance? Certainly not at OU.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Trying to think ahead. OU is at 15 commits now. Can they take at least 25 in the 2017 class.
    Is the 2017 class over/under 25?

    • Boom says:

      Some sites are saying 25-27

    • cush creekmont says:

Over. Several plan to be early, thus counting against 2016. Not being a recruiting-class numbers manipulator or an SEC coach, I can’t tell you the exact number. I have seen up to 28 mentioned, but with more early guys, it could be higher if the coaches want that.

      • Bob Edwards says:

There are still limits even with early guys. Early guys go against the previous year’s class, so that eventually fills up as well. There is also the 85 total limit, the only way to get around that is that have a current scholarship guy leave.

        • Soonerfandave84 says:

Bob who do we have to option down to Triple A College Station?

          • Bob Edwards says:

If it only worked that way. I would actually be in favor of a team having some sort of reserve list. That would let some more kids benefit from the huge amount of money the schools make and allows schools to let guys finish their schooling who just aren’t going to make it on the field without feeling the push to run them off.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

That makes a lot of sense

        • cush creekmont says:

Sure. 85 is the true “hard” total. But how many for 2017 could be very high. It all depends on any “early” departures, but the number is under 85 now right?

          • Drew says:

            I think we’re at 79 or 80 right now.

          • cush creekmont says:

Then count seniors and “guess” at who leaves (that’s the tough one), add in the 5 or 6 short, and you have the “limit.”

    • Dustin says:

Five spots remaining not counting transfers/early NFL entries.
78 on scholarship now, 13 seniors, 15 commits.
Valentin’s situation could change the numbers.

  • Scott says:

I really want CD and Joesph Lewis for OUr last 2 WR’s spots.

    • BleedCrimson says:

Those guys wOUld be great gets! They wOUld look good in Crimson and Cream!!!

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

Just curious, how do you know we are taking 2 more and not just one? I would love to have both of those guys as well!

      • Boom says:

I believe OU is taking 2 more if they are the right ones. Also attrition.

      • Boom says:

I believe OU is taking 2 more if they are the right ones. Also attrition.

      • Scott says:

Well with the unexpected news from Adrian Hardy and Dallas Todd , OU is alot more thin at the WR position now with those guys transferring. Also you cant just pass up on a guy like Joesph Lewis , this dude is a star and also a instant impact type of player. OU loses 3 starting WR’s after this year so we need a guy like him.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Right on, just checking to see if you had some super secret inside info.

          • Scott says:

Lol no , Joesph Lewis is one of those kids with a strong poker face. You wont see him retweeting or liking edits from any school. He stays quiet for the most part.

Prayers up for Oklahoma State and the family/friends of Tyreke Coger, OSU has been through a lot lately.

  • Bob Edwards says:

It’s a little concerning that there are no DT’s on the attendee list.

    • Defend Colfax says:

Keeping food costs low is all I can think of.

      • Bob Edwards says:

I worked at the athletic dorm kitchens when I was in school during the Switzer era. They had a club of guys who had donated 100 head of cattle or more to the program. At one point we had over 2000 lbs of hamburger meat alone. I would think Bob could find a couple of supporters willing to donate a head of cattle or two to the cause.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Only 1 plate of pasta per meal Bob!

          • Bob Edwards says:

No in the dorms they could eat as much as the wanted during meals. There was a basketball player under Tubbs, “DJ” Johnson who went through the breakfast line eight times that we counted. Every time he got scrambled eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy a couple of bananas and a couple of glasses of milk. He may have gone through more times but we counted eight..

          • DrewChubbs says:

The experts do say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day…

          • Bob Edwards says:

He was a big guy and they ran a lot during the preseason to get in shape for the up tempo offense. It was also right before Thanksgiving and he was probably loading up for the trip home.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

LOL thats funny. I was just making fun of the NCAA when they limited one of our Centers (Darlington I think) to one plate of pasta at dinner, not sure if there were any real consequences but it was dumb.

          • Bob Edwards says:

I realize that. That was at some function outside the dorms. It just reminded me of that story. It was amazing to watch some of those guys eat. I swear some of the OL were in there the entire time we were open during two a days and they would still lose weight.

          • Daddy R says:

Thats cuz he was probably delivering all the meals to his friends at school who had no money for food! That, or impressing the ladies…

          • RocketCitySooner says:

When I was in the regular dorms at OU in the mid-sixties, we were on a point system for meals. For example, we got four points for breakfast. Two eggs, one piece of bacon, two slices of toast, four points. Butter/jam was another half point. Coffee was a half point.

        • MileHighOkie says:

That’s funny. I worked in athletic housing in the early 2000’s and I don’t remember ground beef that often at the cafeteria but every Wednesday was steak and crab legs. I can’t even imagine what it’s like in the new dorms they built.

        • Defend Colfax says:

Nice. I enjoy beef about as much as Sam Elliott. Been grinding my own beef for burgers or whatever for years now. I recommend everyone do it. You won’t go back.

        • RocketCitySooner says:

I had a fraternity brother who wrestled for OU at 121 pounds. He used to talk about how rough it was to pull weight. About how little he got to eat and how bad it was to follow some big lineman with food falling off his tray.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

It’s more than concerning, it’s certainly got me worried.

    • DCinAZ says:

Because it’s a helluva drive for the big time DTs we’re going to get.

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

I’m sure we can give them a large to go bag for the drive home, totally worth it!

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Well, no DTs last year as well. Very dangerous not getting one preferably two this year. I looked up the other top 10 in Rivals rankings…Ohio St has two commits one is a 4 star, Bama has one 3 star, Mich one 4 star, Georgia 0, Irish have two one is a 4 star, Tenn Vols have three 2 of them 4 stars, LSU one a 5 star, Gaggies 0, Arizona two one is a 3 star, FSu two one 4 star, Clemson 0.

Wilson or Rogers have to come here or some other talented DT.

  • UGA Sooner says:

This may have already been discussed, but what happened with LSU and Lamb? Did I miss something?

  • metzker says:

Is the BBQ Going to be at Bobs house?

  • "1056" says:

The other day I commented about the Big 12 expansion. I didn’t get a good reply, would someone please humor me and tell me what you think. As far as who to pick to expand and who not to pick. UCF, USF, Cincy, and Memphis. All of these are not ideal, but in time they could affect the SEC, and the B10 with there recruiting. Also I would not pick Huston, for the same reason.

    • Scott says:

If OU was to stay in the Big12 i would prefer Cincinnati , BYU , Colorado and Nebraska (Lots of wishful thinking on my part).

    • Sam Sherwood says:

It pains me to think of adding schools that are not named after their state, or have a compass heading in their name. Of the non-Power 5’s, I am only big on BYU. After that I hold out hope for a Power 5 steal… like Arizona State or Arizona and maybe getting Colorado back.

    • metzker says:

      Why yes————-

    • NuclearMonkey says:

Here’s a more realistic run down of expansion candidates:

      http://www.barkingcarnival.com/2016/7/20/12240036/evaluating-the-big-12-s-expansion-candidates

Sadly, I think it might be spot on.

      • Farmer Glickstein says:

I like Yeshiva, Alcorn State, Wellesley, and Colorado School of Mines.

      • "1056" says:

I agree, but what I’m asking is would you agree that if they pick the schools I mentioned would it affect the recruiting of the SEC, or B10?

        • NuclearMonkey says:

Some, but I don’t think much. How much do they affect them now? Will being in the BigXII change recruiting that much? UCF and USF are third in Florida at best (fourth if Miami starts recruiting well under Richt). Cincy won’t take many recruits from tOSU. Maybe Memphis can steal some from UT, but I doubt it. I don’t think any of these teams are going to win many significant recruits outside of their home states. I think the only way they start affecting SEC and B10 is if their programs turn around like Baylor has the last decade. So, as I see it, this expansion is really a bet that putting the BigXII flag at a school will improve the program enough to compete with other P5 teams (see Baylor circa 2008).

    • Farmer Glickstein says:

I see it as a “dash for cash” to exploit the existing contracts with Fox and ESPN regardless of who they pick. By adding four teams it could add as much as $140m to the conference annually. Giving new members half this money and dividing the rest amongst the current BIGXII would give current members an extra $7million a year. With this money, BIGXII Title Game money, and third tier media rights, this could push the annual revenue over $45m. I just hope that once the conference is burnt down and the insurance checks collected, OU will walk away from the ashes.

    • kt-raida says:

I think BYU is the only reputable choice filling the big 12 with former big East schools makes us the big East with Texas and OU. I think the Big 12 needs to be aggressive for one and see how real the Arizona schools discontent worth the pac 12 is.

    • Dick Bump says:

Last season was one of my favorites other than 1 1/2 games or so. Looking for improvement on both sides of the ball which is exciting to think about. Boomer!

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Yeah UTs suckage affects everyone in a 800 mile radius. It’s a horrible atmospheric condition

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Yeah, but our players keeping y’all in business should make up for it.

          • D Hunter Sanchez says:

I’ve always separated Texas athletes from the UT. Two different entities. Yeah without Texas players OU is not OU. But that has no relation to UT. Texas doesn’t suck, but UT does. See how that works? Glad to have you here though.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Well the whole conversation started with a comment about the state of Texas.

          • Soonerfandave84 says:

Oh BTW it’s nice to banter with a ‘horn. Glad you are around!

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

            As always!

          • Boom says:

How do you feel UT has gone about their business in the SWC & Big 12. Would you agree the Big 12 was a top conf until the network??

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Well I’ve seen people on here blame UT for the fall of the old SWC, but in reality, that was SMU’s fault. Also, I don’t think LHN has had anything to do with us not being a clear top 2 or 3 conference. I think it’s had everything to do with our lack of performance on the field. But that’s just me.

          • Boom says:

SMU, well I guess you have a sense of humor. That’s the first time I’ve heard that – SMU kills SWC. I have a ton of history with SWC so I know the inside from the inside. Trust me, it wasn’t SMU.
Beebe was up Dodd’s a– like a puppet? Bowlsby was scared to make a decision because of the possible backlash from UT. I like to visit with you but to shut your eyes on what UT has done to each conf is insane. Unfortunately, it’s to late now unless there is a miracle we can get out. Based on SMU & SWC, I guess all UT folks think that OU ran off ATM/Colorado/Nebraska/Mizzou.
Moving forward, UT offers more viewers but we offer more championships. And since your Texas boys like playing for championships, we Oklahoma will always have Sooner Nation viewers in Texas in any conf we go to.
BTW, there are 12 Texas boys on Bama’s roster who like playing for championships too.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Hell, it was a Texas boy (Anders) that sealed the NC win for them against us.

          • Boom says:

No comment on the conf stuff. hmm. Have a good weekend. What part of Texas as I’m in Spring.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

It was a really long post, and I’ve been responding to everyone’s jabs. You gotta cut me some slack man… I’m in the Katy Mills area, but I’m in Spring fairly often.

          • Katyboomer says:

Got give you credit that was a pretty good come back.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

You do realize the irony as your football stadium is named after an Oklahoman right?

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

My city is named after a Tennesseean. Your state is named after Native Americans… My point is, we’re all sharing, so you’re not special!

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Hey my kids think I’m special!

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

Who am I kidding, you probably are the bees knees.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yep, Texans always need an Oklahoman in charge since that’s the only way they can accomplish anything. That’s why you’ve only won NCs with coaches that were trained in Oklahoma.

Since the modern era of football it’s been a draw. Texas fans bring up that record knowing damn well OU was playing high school teams back in the days when Texas was beating them regularly. Back then OU had actually lost to HS teams.

          • Unofficial Longhorn says:

So what you’re saying is, y’all weren’t relevant until you started getting quality TX players. Got it.

If you haven’t watched Cameron Rising’s tape, you should go watch it. That is one of the most brutal QB prospect tapes I’ve ever seen. That kid………is a damn monster of a QB. He’s just brutal on his opponents. He can make all the throws from the pocket, or on the run to either side, with pinpoint accuracy and brutal efficiency. I know most people are pulling for Thomson but treat yourself to at least watching Rising’s tape. One of the best I’ve ever seen.

      He had inside help

    • Coach JK says:

He is correct. In other words he played primarily man when he should have been playing zone so to speak. Thats the closest I can come to explaining it. Cloud, sky and man coverages are all different and played different according to the offensive set.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I thought ‘cloud’ meant there were two safeties and one corner playing the deep thirds. Another corner would be on the other side of the field. If they’re referring to him being the ‘cloud’ corner, sounds like he left his third open to pursue inside allowing the back set on his side to get free since he would not be there to provide over the top coverage.

  • MikeyBoom says:

Good afternoon fellow Sooners. Props to TFB staff for getting us all happy before the weekend. Thank you guys for always giving us the extremely cheap inside info haha Just got back from the barbershop and I have my own news from the shop LOL. I guess it seems that Casey Thompson was down in Miami not too long ago and that he came away extremely impressed. My barber said he is getting the sense that the more exposure and wanted Casey is getting the more he senses Casey will be going out of state for school. He said that Thompson told him that he LOVES Coach Riley and Coach Stoops but he just wants to be different from his brother Kendall and dad Charles. Another school that Casey is really high on is Clemson. According to my barber the play of Watson at QB for Clemson intrigues Casey a whole lot. Theirs a long ways away from 2018 Signing day but just reporting the news I was told so don’t stone me. Also an interesting story from an incident earlier this week at the shop. Joe Mixon went up and someone brought up the whole Molitor article that came out recently and I am told Joe said straight up that he cant wait to get a chance to publicly speak. They apparently asked him when that was going to be and Joe said hopefully soon. I didn’t want to ask anymore about the situation because I don’t want them to figure out I am a member of TFB haha. Have a blessed weekend friends

What up Mikey? It is a long way from #ST18, and it sounds like he wants his own legacy. Can’t blame the kid I have one of those Dad’s that was a (Notorious shall we say) kinda guy. Speaking from personal experience there are a lot of factors involved with it. Can you fill those shoes, can you step out of the shadow will people always compare you to what your pop’s has done. Can I go somewhere else and start my own thing or will that come back to bite me because I did not compare to the old man. I feel for him because I know how it can be. Actually going through that as we speak in life, however it should be his decision and his alone. I mean you can get all the input you want from other’s but in the end you have to live with the decision.

I’ve read some that say the schools in tejas won’t stand for Houston coming in. Then the governor, school presidents, etc all say they don’t have an issue, including taco tech today.

Others say BYU can’t work due to Sundays and a small market. First, there is one heck of a lot of Mormons located everywhere. Then, it’s president says that Sundays can be worked out.

I think those are the two schools that I’m leaning towards, especially BYU. I hope everyone has a great weekend.

Motley was definitely mentioned when they asked the players at BIG 12 media days who was the newcomer to watch. However they all said they think the biggest impact would come from Mykel Jones.

I believe it especially since he was endorsed by the QB Baker Mayfield. Plus OU always has a nack for producing very productive slot receivers. I believe this guy is the next in line.

  • End You says:

Can someone educate me by ranking these 4 corners 1-4? And if so tell me how you came up with your thesis
    1.Kary Vincent
    2.Kobe Boyce
    3.Trajan Bandy
    4.Jaylon Johnson

    • Coach JK says:

Ok, here is my take. Not in order but here is what I see. Vincent and Bandy are almost alike, small and quick with very good ball skills ( think Dakota Austin ), Bandy may be a little faster. Boyce is a pretty good cover guy with decent ball skills and has the potential to add some weight and be a little more physical. Johnson is by far the most physical and a big hitter, has good ball skills and plays press coverage very well, could add weight and be a great safety.

      • End You says:

So would you say Jaylon’s the best of the 4?

        • Coach JK says:

Best hitter? yes!! Best press coverage player? yes Not the best speed, maybe not the best cover guy, but all around very good, In my opinion he would be a great safety, but pure corner skills I might have to stay with Bandy.

          • OohRah Mama says:

Well, if he stays true to himself, his Sooner heritage and his principles he can be a beacon of light in the sewage that is ESECPN.

      • SamSooner says:

        Gag.

      • Dick Bump says:

I think that’s probably true on average. Big 12 top defenses are competitive with anyone, especially from the speed standpoint.

      • SavageSoonerEsq says:

I sort of disagree. I think many of the SEC defenses are bigger by necessity, but I think OU’s defenses are probably as fast or faster than most if not all (LSU is usually crazy fast). The top 1/4 of the Big 12 can hang with the SEC’s top defenses at most positions, but it’s obvious to me that the D-lines are overwhelming better at the top SEC schools than the top Big 12 schools (I think OU is rectifying this slowly but surely). But IMHO when you start looking at positions outside the D-line, the OU’s have elite defensive backs that would dominate in the SEC just as easily as in the Big 12.

    • ZW_in_Austin says:

Yeah but if it’s 12 teams and with the same set up as before, one will have to suffer through it once every 4 years.

      • RocketCitySooner says:

That depends. If you’re travelling to BYU, then it’s once a year. If you’re travelling from BYU, it’s at least four, maybe five, times a year.

        • ZW_in_Austin says:

Right. I’m referring specifically to BYU/WVU. I suppose if they want in the B12 that badly they’re open to dealing with their own travel situation. Travel to BYU would only be once every other year at least.

There have been many great LB’s in OU’s history. Dante Jones and of course the Boz. The Boz would actually take over the game and dominate the opponents offense. It was incredible to see that.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Shoate and Cumby are a couple that come to mind from the Switzer era as well.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Shoate was the BEST. Cumby great & 3rd. Just think of all the great LBs that would be second team to Shoate, Boswell, and Cumby. This also assumes all those great outside DEs are DEs and not LBs.

          • Bob Edwards says:

Yeah are the DEs in the 5-2 Oklahoma defense basically the equivalent of the OLBs in the 3-4 of today?

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Nomenclature of the old “Okie” defense with 5 and 2 versus the new version of 3 & 4. It gets more complicated to assign the best LBs if they are included, but OU always listed them as DEs. No matter what, there were some spectacular tacklers in both groups.

Joe Bowden was fierce on the field, amazing athlete. You

        • Bob Edwards says:

Rufus was good, but nowhere near the best that ever played LB at OU. In 86 Miami had 65 plays. The Boz had 22 tackles. Figure in incomplete passes and plays that went out of bounds and he basically had half the tackles for OU in the game. Like SoonerOracle737 said he would take over games and simply dominate the other team’s offense.

Just because you are the leading tackler doesn’t mean you are the best. Teams Shipp played on were bad. That said, he was on the field a lot.

Well, Jackie got left out; perhaps he deserves some consideration as best linebacker based on his stats.

  • Jdizzle says:

    Disregard the Sunday visitor…

    • Bob Edwards says:

Not that disappointed. I know we need DL but he was the kind of player we were taking in Shipp’s later days. Talented but with some question that kept him from being picked up by the big boys. Kind of guy who spends a year or two in the weight room and then you find out his not eligible when it’s his turn to step up and play.

Not saying this particular kid would have ended up that way, but not being eligible until July sure has that vibe to it.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

      Who?

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Yeah. Tweets show he signed with Tenn. Odd deal that OU was looking at a 2016 this late. I guess overnight he made a decision.

  • bommer85 says:

I know most of the kids wont factor in to next years game but Ohio state putting together a hell of a 2017 class…lets get another boom and keep pace

    • T. Rob says:

We can’t keep pace with them until we win a Natl tittle. That’s the perks that come with it, multiple 5 star recruits. But we will get there after we win it all this year.

      • Dick Bump says:

We’re not that far off. A little bit of luck at the right time and place and we could have been there last year.

      • bommer85 says:

I like your optimism…it doesnt hurt ohio state that half the team got drafted in the NFL eithee

        • T. Rob says:

True. Which is why you are seeing a return on high level recruits this year. The have a good recruiting pitch for ELITE guys. “We put guys in the league” if your a 5 star recruit in the high school, you know you have a legitimate chance of going to the league if you continue to develop your craft. So naturally you want to go where they can and will make that happen.

  • Maranatha846 says:

Ehhh, at least we didn’t feed him a free meal before he committed to the Vols.

  • 47 Straight OU Know says:

Good afternoon Brainiac’s, “It is another great day to be a SOONER”, a couple of ?’s. Is this BBQ legal by NCAA rules? Also was thinking does Coach Thib’s have any commitments right now? Since he came from Kansas I just can not see him being familiar with landing top recruits now don’t get me wrong I am sure he knows how to recruit but does he know how to land the big fish? Could this BBQ be a way to show him how to be a better recruiter?

    • Jdizzle says:

Yes, it’s legal. A ton of schools have them. And yes he does. Thomas is his. What a very negative post

      • 47 Straight OU Know says:

What is so negative about it. When you don’t know the answer about something the best way to find out is to ask right?

    • Boom says:

He was at Kansas for a year and almost got Bledsoe who signed with OU. You have to pay your dues but if you have people skills, you can recruit. From everything we have heard, he definitely has people skills and he is young. That doesn’t hurt either and he played on the DL. Lot of positives and he will do well. I guess Bob didn’t know how to coach since he’d never been a head coach. I’m a fan of yours but and you are always positive so your post was somewhat strange. Take care.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Keep in mind that Thibbs is the fourth dline coach in a little over three years. Hard to build relationships with these kids when the face changes every year.

      • Wood says:

Lampkin said he is a very different coach but he likes him and he is definitely a players coach.

    • Dick Bump says:

Legal? Depends on what is in the sauce.

    • Bob Edwards says:

As for legality it is just an unofficial visit.

    • Sooner Ray says:

Only illegal if they serve extra pasta.

  • Randy says:

Makes sense on McDaniel being from SEC country definitely has its advantages and to me as a JC even a SO he seemed on film with his body type more of a 4-3 DE but he is the size I would love to see OU get to with our OLBs.

  • Neworleanssooner says:

What are the circumstances regarding McDaniel being such a late signee for the 2016 class?

  • T. Rob says:

So who out of the 2017 class currently committed do you guys think will have a good chance of being a true freshman?

    • T. Rob says:

Call me crazy, but I think trey sermon will surprise some ppl. He’s already college size ready.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

I think they will all be true freshman ?

    • Scott says:

Robert Barnes or Jalen Reagor. Also your lil bro Tyrese, imo that RG spot could be wide open after this season.

      • T. Rob says:

What about the lineman from the 16 class? Barnes and Reagor are solid picks.

        • Scott says:

Im not entirely sold on Bennett Powers just yet. That RG spot is the only concern i have with the offensive line , but i do have faith in Coach B to get the Oline situated.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

Playing as a true freshman? What I think you mean. Several. LBs and Safeties are standard for Bob to use on special teams and 3rd team – never know about injuries. I doubt any become starters as frosh, but I think your bro Ty could get into the rotation. Calcaterra looks like he is good enough to play. Depending on the final guys, a D tackle could make the rotation. I would guess a couple of receivers, a DB or two, and perhaps RB. It’s too early to tell not just because we don’t know how the SS17 guys will adjust, but also because we don’t know who may leave from the current guys.

    • Daryl says:

I would have picked Bandy but based on Twitter feed he is seeming to be all about gamecocks.

Based on graduation or possible leaving early I would say Reagor, Sermon, and Draper have the best chances to play as true freshman. Sermon and Abdullah could be an awesome 1-2 punch.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Historically, you probably see RB, DL, and WR play more as freshman. Those are spots where there are less assignments to learn and more just use your talent. DB’s, LB’s and OL have to work as a unit so it often takes them more time to get on the same page as far as assignments. OL also usually need at least a year in the weight room. Starting as a true freshman OL means either someone screwed up in recruiting or the kid is just a freak athlete. QB pretty much depends on whether the guy the year before graduated and who else is on campus.

    • Jpsooner23 says:

I would say Draper just because of the depth we have there. LB is a hard transition but if he comes in and picks things up quick I could see him jumping to the top.

Same with your bro. OL is tough to crack as true frosh, but he has the talent to jump right past what we have a OG.

And sermon is an obvious choice especially if we have 2 declare.

    • j l says:

reagor, draper, barnes, and brown/broiles. Maybe not all start but i think they see a lot of snaps.

    • Alwaysasooner says:

Maybe Charleston Rambo especially if Mead, Green, Miller or Farrar doesn’t step up and produce this year. Sure be nice to c a big receiver like Malcolm Kelly again.

    • soonerborn says:

Calcaterra, with Anderws as the opposite inside WR I believe Calcaterra can draw the mismatch. Dude showed that he can ball.

  • Wood says:

just a question is there a way to see new post rather than going through all the post over and over lol?

    • Bob Edwards says:

If you leave the page up, there will be things you can click when new posts arrive. If you close the page, then no. I just keep a tab in my browser set to TFB. That way when I come back I can see what has changed. It will lose track if you leave it for hours though.

    • Bob Edwards says:

Oh, if you click sort by and set it to newest the new ones will appear at the top, though you won’t see new replies to other comments.

    • Sooner Ray says:

The default list is by best which I hate. Sorting with newest on top seems to be best, then what Bob said.

  • Jpsooner23 says:

May have been posted below, but got our first Ealy to OU prediction and it was from an LSU guy. Like it.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

I really like EALY, but “predictions” are worth less than the electrons used to produce them.

      • Jpsooner23 says:

I do agree with that 100%. Just a little more revealing coming from someone around LSU. They know him well there.

If Hale did it I would never have mentioned 🙂

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

I’m curious if the Huge visitor could be Adrian Ealy or Filiaga

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Not worried about DE’s…we have them in the fold. I want a DT to commit at the Q next week. We need to stop the hype train that the SEC is the place to go play college ball. While it’s not hurting OU this year, it has in the past. We need to finish with a Big 12 title and a top 10 class or better, like a top 5 to really keep it rolling.

  • Scott says:

I feel like Okudah is leaning more towards OU at this point. Idk if this good news for us but Ohio st picked up a commitment from a 4 star DB.

  • SamSooner says:

Hey, all. We made it down safely yesterday. I’ve played a round of golf today at Willbrook CC. We took a boat ride on the Wacamaw River, docked the boat and had dinner. I saw this boat today and thought this is a good sign of things to come.

Where else are you playing Sam?

      • SamSooner says:

True Blue and Caledonia, for sure, Lincoln.

        • Lincoln Hawk says:

Caledonia is nice! My buddy played True Blue on the big tourney one year and loved it. If you haven’t already played them you will more than likely love both courses.

          • SamSooner says:

I’ve played them both. We’ve been coming here the past 10 years. They are both great. Any recommendations?

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

I remember I enjoyed Arrowhead. It was a shorter course where you can hit irons from some tees. I may have just liked it because it was one of those days where I played good for a whole round. Funny how you play sometimes dictates how you like the course LOL. You may look into the Barefoot courses too. I remember liking Tigers Eye as well, just a short trip to North Carolina. Heard Panthers Run was good too. Hope this helps and they didn’t let these courses go or just areate!

          • SamSooner says:

Thanks, Lincoln. I drove the ball well today. I missed one fairway.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

That makes for a much better day for sure. Have a good trip, stay safe and have fun!

          • SamSooner says:

Thank you, sir. I’ll check in tomorrow.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

Nice job! – a little jealousy creeping in 🙂

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Also, TPC Myrtle Beach was nice.

          • SamSooner says:

            I’ve played TPC, too.

          • Boom says:

I’ve played all those courses and caledonia is my favorite. Don’t forget to eat pankcakes from the stores located on every corner at Myrtle.

FWIW the LSU 247 guy crystal balled Adrian Ealy to OU today. Interesting as the rest of them have him to LSU, probably since he is from Louisiana.

Can’t get the tweet to show so here’s the link to the actual article. It lays out exactly why I want OU to go to the SED. $$$ and recruiting. Credit to Jordan for finding it on twitter. http://www.nola.com/lsu/index.ssf/2016/07/when_the_big_12_expands_so_sho.html

    • SamSooner says:

UGA, I can see your first tweet. I can’t see this one. I will go to Twitter and check it out. Based on the article that was posted on texas TFB, there could be a push to get OU and texsa to join the SEC, unless the B1G makes a push.

      • UGA Sooner says:

I couldn’t even see the tweet I posted. That’s odd. I’m fine with either conference. I just want out of the Big 12.
        Enjoying vacation?

        • SamSooner says:

I just want OU out of this defunct league, with its poor leadership (Bowlsby). There is a time to be quiet and there is a time to be the voice. He doesn’t get it.

Vacation is great; I’m having coffee out by the pool. My uncle’s house is laid out.

          • UGA Sooner says:

Man, I’m jealous. I’m locked up in my room writing a 4 1/2 page report over nuclear power. Long story short, I’m stuck on page 2. Have fun and get home safely, Sam!

          • SamSooner says:

I will. Food for thought: why don’t you watch a documentary on 3 Mile Island or Chernobyl; that might jumpstart the creative juices.

            I will and thanks!

      • Maranatha846 says:

Sam, I haven’t kept up with all of this changing conferences since the Pac deal fell through. What timeline are we talking about? Soon, when GOR expires, when?

    • SamSooner says:

It is interesting that they are calling for the $EC to add OU and OSU.

      • UGA Sooner says:

I doubt they truly want OSU. I think we all know it’s just to potentially get us. Little sister has been an attractive program recently, though. I’ll give them that.

        • SamSooner says:

But that probably comes with the knowledge that texsa is off the market because of the LHN. Another thing about texsa leaderhip is that those arrogant Huggies wipes are pompous enough to believe they can ride into the $EC and subplant the blue blood programs in that league, start making demands.

        • Boom says:

It brings 81 nattys to a strong conf for bragging rights. They would take both schools and don’t want the Texas due to their baggage.

          • UGA Sooner says:

Should’ve rephrased what I said. I was talking purely football. The pokes are an attractive athletic program overall, definitely.

      • Cush Creekmont says:

Sam – only happens IF texsa goes to PAC w/ TT and the other tex schools. BI6 MIGHT (but unlikely) jump on OU-KU. If no chance a BI6 (as in they tell Boren to go away), then Boren would be forced to go SEC…and the SEC might consider taking little sister to seal the deal.

I still believe nothing important happens (and I include adding 2 or 4 teams to the 12-2 as unimportant) until about 2021-2023. The huge realignment might come about then when network contracts begin expiring and the NETWORKS want realignment into FOUR super conferences with four winners and four at-large teams playing for the NC. This would bring the most money – and it’s ALL about the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$

    • SoonerinLondon says:

OU leadership does not want the SEC. Unfortunately, the B1G and Pac do not want OU without Texsa. Hopefully, the B1G or Pac will change.

Right now, the GOR makes a move difficult anyway. There would need to be something sorted there, by the conference members.

      • SamSooner says:

I really believe Boren wants out of the Big XII. And, if the $EC would be interested in OU and OSU, maybe they will figure out a way to solve the GOR problem for us.

      • UGA Sooner says:

OU leadership needs to get off the high horse and look at what the SEC has done. I hate the SEC, but they rake in the money. That’s what Boren should be looking at. We don’t need to fall behind like we already are. Oklahoma will always be a big name brand, but that doubles with that SEC logo on the jersey. I think the SEC is the safest move for OU.
I can see why the Big 10 wants OU and Texsa. If the Big 10 gets OU and Texsa, they’ll arguably have the top 2 rivalries in the nation. OU/Texsa and OSU/Michigan. Of course there is Auburn/Bama, but I think those 3 are the dealer’s choice of biggest rivalries.
Pac 12 would be third on my list. The West coast doesn’t seem to care about football as much as the Midwest and the South. I don’t see the Pac12 being much of an upgrade.

        • SamSooner says:

I concur with that line of thinking, UGA. I had never given any thought to being able to say that you are the conference that has two of the best rivalry games in college football.

        • UGA Sooner says:

IMAGINE OUR OFFENSE IN THE SEC (thanks Sam). I know the GOR is in the way, but c’mon. Our offense would cream their defenses like we have the past 3 years (2015 was scary, though). I think SEC is the way to go.

        • SoonerinLondon says:

He is looking at money…grant money for the university. The athletic program has no money problems. It contributes $5m to the general fund.

The cut in State funding is dramatic. OU needs academic funding and the SEC cannot accomplish that. This is bigger than football.

          • UGA Sooner says:

How can OU get academic funding from the other conferences? I have never paid attention to state funding of any university, but that $5m would definitely increase with the funds the athletic department is getting from the move to SEC. How will joining the big 10, for instance, help the academic funding of OU if the state isn’t even helping? Maybe I know nothing about OU’s problems (I live in Athens, Georgia), but again, I don’t see how moving conferences will get you academic $$$. Maybe I can learn something, so I’m all ears.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

Research grant money, on a per school basis, is much higher in the Pac and especially B1G. Academic standards across the board are higher in both conferences. Frankly, the reason OU was rejected by the Pac was as much the perceived low academic standards of OU (by Cal, Stanford, and a few others) as it was not having Texsa along for the ride. The B1G AAU requirement, of course, is well documented. Higher academic standing…even through association…results in more research money opportunities.

          • Cush Creekmont says:

You are correct about the funding – BI6 is by far the best. Yet, Boren’s desire to go there is about the academic “prestige” they have compared to the SEC or even the PAC (PAC has several great ones, but the AZ schools, Oregon schools, and WASU are not that spectacular).

It seems like Boren (and OU) dodged a bullet by not getting in the PAC since there 3rd tier money and their network deals are worse than the 12-2.

If the BI6 won’t take OU w/ KU and texsa holds fast (or goes to the PAC), Boren may have to consider the SEC w/ OSU. While I believe this is unlikely given his preferences, the status quo appears to be a loser after roughly 2020.

          • SoonerinLondon says:

One thing is certain, only the SEC is willing to take us right now…and they would do that tomorrow.

          • UGA Sooner says:

I should probably rephrase my desire then. From purely an athletic department standpoint, I want OU in the SEC. If academics are brought into it, the big 10 sounds like the best overall choice.

        • Boom says:

B1G wants UT for viewers and recruiting. LHN dissolves and they make money off ESPN from this contract. Then they rake in the additional money from ESPN/FOX B1G Contract.
There are pros & cons for joining all these other conferences but for travel and recruiting, SEC makes the most sense but not fan base. I’m going to grab the popcorn and see how this shakes out.

        • DrewChubbs says:

I’m late to the party, but along the lines of rivalries, i just want to add one thing. Joining the Big10 would also renew the OU-Nebraska game, potentially annually, depending on the divisional arrangement. It’s no where as big as the others mentioned, nationally speaking, but its very significant to the two fanbases.

Personally, i still prefer the SEC. Im not excited about cold weather games up north. And i think (minus the SEC SEC SEC hullabaloo) our fanbases shares more in common with the southeasterners culturally. Plus the recruiting benefits. I can see a few real good rivalries developing with most conference teams, and especially the heavy weights.

          • UGA Sooner says:

YES. But as many others on this site continue to point out to me, it is more than just a football move (which I think I can honestly say we all care more about the football team than other things). No matter what, I think Oklahoma thrives in the SEC even more so than now. $$$ and recruiting is all you need. But i will take whooping Nebraska every year again as a consolation prize if we miss out on the SEC train.

    • SamSooner says:

      Wow!

That was the stealthiest approach to breaking a record I’ve ever witnessed. It was quiet, I tell you. Folks who’ve complained about this team have to realize for that to happen, you can’t be a horrible team.

That’s what gives me hope about the future of OU’s success. And if they join the $EC, there is not current $EC team that is successfully running the HUNH offense.

      • UGA Sooner says:

I didn’t even think of that! Our offense in the SEC would be unstoppable. They’re used to those heavy run schemes and whatnot.

        • SamSooner says:

Yeah. Isn’t that something. I believe Stoops has put together a team that can win his conference and be physical enough to beat the teams he’ll face in the championship game. Folks may not realize but Stoops has only been at this for three years or so. His recruits, the type of team he believes he needs, the beef on the OL and DL, have not played a down. They will see it this year.

          • UGA Sooner says:

I believe everyone on the O-line is now all bedenbaugh’s men. He likes em big and mean. As do I.

You like your linemen that way or your women??? Haha how’s Georgia feeling this weekend?

          • UGA Sooner says:

I like my women bigger and meaner than I like my linemen.
Georgia is alright. It’s tolerable. Yesterday was by far the best day due to rain. It was only about 85 degrees. It’ll be around 93 in an hour or two so it’s manageable. Although, it’s always humid here so it’s a sticky, mosquito infested 93. Hits around 100 in about two weeks usually. That’s when I hibernate.

          • ALar03 says:

Yea ive never been out that way.. Wouldnt mind Ou being in the SEC just so I can take a trip to other parts of the country!

          • bigrackhunter says:

Agree, he finally has a center that can be an anchor and the tip of the spear. Plus we have guys more suited for the 3-4. It takes unique blend of size and speed in your personnel to run it effectively. Thanks to Monty, Coach B, and Cooks we have not only depth but more talent at more positions, than we had in years.

      • BleedCrimson says:

Right? I didn’t realize he had that many yards.

    • Cush Creekmont says:

If Baker gets protection, the passing game will give us leads and then the running game will plow the opponent under. Samaje will get 1100+ barring injury and Mixon should approach 1k AND there will be another 1.5k split between the others.

    • Mark_in_VA says:

Short of injury, he’s got it.

Big 12 expansion- Get 4 teams to expand to 14

BYU, Cincinnati, Memphis and Colorado state

Division 1 – Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Memphis, Kansas St, Kansas

Division 2 – TCU, Baylor, Texas, Texas Tech, Colorado State, BYU, Iowa State

    • Cush Creekmont says:

No, get three teams – don’t care which and expand to 12. Big 12-2+3-1 (THE one, there is only ONE OU!)

    • kt-raida says:

Noooo I’d rather them blow it up. BYU is the only one I’d have no problem with because like all those being considered, they need to bring something to the table. The Big 12 cant always be the ones doing the upgrading. Lets remember the Big 12 was the second best conference in the land when we had the 12, some yrs ( like 2008) we were the best. WVU was a good add but doesnt fit culturally or demographically. We need to be aggressors and see what it would take to get Nebraska and Colorado back, add BYU and drop WVU if we wanted regional. to keep WVU add Nebraska, Colorado and send Missouri a “hey stranger” text. I know this is unlikely, I CAN DREAM RIGHT?!

    • Daryl says:

I agree do t add to just add. I would rather try to take some teams from Pac 12 who is a financial disaster or find a way to combine ACC and Big 12 which I believe would be a conference that would rival SEC and would give us a conference that would stretch from Midwest to east coast and south east. That would be a huge win but it won’t happen.

    • RocketCitySooner says:

Expansion is not worth the effort. The teams that are available add nothing to the conference except warm bodies. The teams that would add something are not available. Why bother. Let the BigXii die. Let’s go to a real conference.

    • soonerborn says:

Id rather see OU leave, but if they did stay then this would be ok. My only recommendation for the division would be have ISU in division 1 and the furtherest east team in division 1 to move down to division 2.

  • Will Narramore says:

CeeDee Lamb, former OU commit, is set to re announce a decision tomorrow thought to be down to Oklahoma, A&M, and Ole Miss. I know there was a big push by the coaches on social media to get him back in the fold

    • Cush Creekmont says:

We’ll welcome him – SS17 is far better for him too than the 4th place Aggies or the probation-bound rebels.

Maybe he wants to announce OU again so he can get some serious BBQ 🙂

      • UGA Sooner says:

He claims it’ll be his final decision, so I honestly feel extremely confident in our chances due to him attending the BBQ after his commitment.

        • Cush Creekmont says:

Well, that makes perfect sense – one should never underestimate the power of really good BBQ 🙂

If he is talking about Lamb and a +1… I’ll be doubly excited. If he is just talking about Lamb… I’ll still be excited.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

He’s talking about lamb plus 1. He wouldn’t have said anything if it was just Lamb. Why steal his spotlight? Lamb and K’Lavon.

        • Sooner Ray says:

He does say “a boom” and not “some booms” so a little hard for me to determine.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

He also says surprise and Lamb wouldn’t be a surprise. I’m crossing my fingers it’s Lamb and let’s just say Okudah;)

          • Sooner Ray says:

            Acceptable.

          • Tucker says:

That’s what I thought. Why would Lamb be a surprise if he was once a sooner commit? Maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

          • Lincoln Hawk says:

Also I don’t think Barnes would do that to Lamb knowing he has had that date selected for a while now. So maybe it’s a guy that doesn’t have a date picked yet or that maybe off our radar a bit, like the above mentioned Kary Vincent.

          • Jesse says:

Isn’t Vincent committing tonight at 7? I thought I saw that this morning.

          • Tucker says:

Could be. Based off of previous notes I didn’t think we had a chance on Vincent anymore. It will be interesting to see what happens. Definitely fingers crossed for Okudah. That’s a kid I’d say I think we’ve all been following for quite some time.

          • Tucker says:

            Truth.

        • Sooner Ray says:

He does say “a boom” and not “some booms” so a little hard for me to determine.

        • Tucker says:

Right? That’s what I thought. Plus, Lamb doesn’t feel like he would be surprise.

          • DCinAZ says:

Lamb re-committing is a surprise because it doesn’t usually ever happen, but that’s exactly whats going to happen tomorrow.

    • Scott says:

I would think it’s Lamb but some people think Barnes is talking about another guy commiting as well. For what it’s worth Kary Vincent liked Robert Barnes tweet.

      • ohiosoonerdevildog says:

I figured as much. Would be awesome if it was Vincent though. That’d be a huge get.

    • DCinAZ says:

Not sure. Lamb is re-joining #SoonerSquad17 tomorrow though. Book it.

  • So, I hinted to a visitor that was HUGE coming up to the BBQ. I told you all I several sources tell me said recruit was coming up with his family. Well, that visit isn’t set in stone, but was told that the decision will be made by Wednesday. That recruit, you ask? It is none other than Anthony Hines.

So, to recap. HInes is likely to be visiting OU on Friday, but it is not set in stone at this point. We will know by Wednesday and update accordingly.

If we go to 14 teams then I’ll be waiting on the ledge with a few of you. If the big12 has been granted the right to play a CCG regardless of the number of teams we have why even bother expanding?

        • JB says:

BYU is one of the teams that will be added. That is a foregone conclusion at this point. It’s between Cincy and Houston for the 2nd spot.
