OU Football | Summer Roster Updates

Image via Sooner Sports

As we try to do here at TFB, whenever the OU training staff updates the football roster we like to pass that information along to those who are interested. There have been some updates with respect to the current roster, however those do not yet include a number of the incoming freshmen. Regardless, here is the information currently available.

BOOMER GREAT THANKS!!!! JORDAN ROCKING THE HOUSE

  • Dylan Cornell says:

Awesome work Jordan, as always!! It looks like you accidentally put Obo as was 283 instead of 238 in a rush to give us all this great info

  • Matt says:

I had heard that Thomas was down to around 200 but this has him back up around 215 so don’t know what to believe. Other than that, I love pretty much everything I’m seeing on here. I’m wondering how Lampkin looks at 330 though, that sounds a little concerning but maybe its good weight.

    • Jordan Esco says:

well, the thing to understand (as I’m sure you do) w/ stuff like this is it’s like if you went up to one of these guys today and put them on a scale everything would match up 100%.

this was on whatever day the training staff decided to record things and who knows when that was and/or what has changed since.

it’s a decent enough gauge for those of us on the outside of the program looking in, but certainly not something to be taken as the gospel.

if any of that makes sense.

  • CrimsonNative says:

Looks to be a miscalculation on Ogbo…just sayin’.

  • Scott says:

These boys putting in that work this off season. I LOVE IT!!!!!!

  • Dallas_Sooner7 says:

    You’ve been busy Jordan! Thanks!

  • Boom says:

Love that the OL is not 335+. If you look in the pros, they are closer to 300 – 315 to endure the season. When I see a bunch of college OL that are that big across the line, I see slow and out of shape guys. My .02 cents.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

I’ve seen some pics of Mann on Twitter within the last week, and he is jacked for 270. No fat at all on the guy. He could definitely add a lot more weight to that frame of his.

  • SoonerFan92 says:

Gallimore is going to tear it up this year no matter what role he plays in. Guy is a monster.

  • CrimsonNative says:

If you were looking at measurements alone, this team looks really good.

  • BigJoeBrown says:

This is awesome, thanks for doing this Jordan. I know I was curious about the progress of the team with some Schmitty.

There really are a plethora of players that just put on some weight and stick out.

  • CrimsonNative says:

Looks like Rodriguez has the size to really hurt someone the way he’s going. If he keeps it up, he could turn into a DE.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Not sure A. Thomas needed to gain that weight?

Some good gainers and losers throughout that list though.

    • Super Keith says:

That’s kinda what I was thinking, however, if he has been able to gain without losing a step then it looks good for the next level.

      • Farmer Glickstein says:

Thanks for helping OU win the recruiting war. You and Boomer17 are doing an amazing job with those edits!

    • Birddawg says:

Isnt Parker the 1-free..asked to cover deep end and Ahmad is more of the run support safety?

    • DCinAZ says:

Thomas doesn’t do much in terms of coverage anymore. He’s been freed to roam the field in run support.

  • AgedBill says:

Thanks, Jordan! You guys have increased the excitement and blood pressure significantly today. Thanks again.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

+31 for Samia, makes my wild preseason pick of him being first team All B12 look more reasonable. I think he’s gonna dominate in the running game this year

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

Lot of great things with their weights.

  • j l says:

Very few head scratchers like there was last year, with all our o-lineman dropping weight. Skill guys got bigger, lineman got bigger(except the few that needed to drop weight). This is excellent!

    • CrimsonNative says:

Maybe, and this is just hypothetical, it was all part of the conditioning plan. Spend one off-season dropping bad weight and then, the next building it back up with good weight.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Or they dropped the weight to play “faster” disregarding the fact that when we play beefier teams, we’re screwed lol.

      • Birddawg says:

        This is before fall camp.
Fall camp is probably some will lose weight being that its hot as hel*

      • j l says:

Thats certainly a possibility. Schmitty is a damn good strength coach, wouldnt put it past him to have a multiyear plan.

  • Soonerfandave84 says:

Thanks guys for all the articles today. It’s much appreciated

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

They can have a few hours off now. But better have an OP tomorrow!

  • BigJoeBrown says:

Like Dalton gaining size, along with Samia and Evans breaking the 300 mark, across the board OU’s O-line are going to be some roadgraders.

Really like how it looks like OU secondary as a whole have gained some weight.

Jeff Mead, perhaps those extra pounds will allow him maneuver more on the field.

Seems like across the board for the team there has been some weight improvement and in some circumstances big improvement as compared to years past. With all the weight gain, it’s nice to know it has been done the right way with Schmitty and Bryd.

    • Birddawg says:

Jump ball redzone target Jeff Mead.

      • Defend Colfax says:

        Do it.

        • Birddawg says:

I don’t know of any secondary’s in the big 12 that have corners big enough to cover a 6’5 200lb wr and a 6’5 250 TE.. that’s a lot of jump muscle on the ball.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Throw in AD into that mix as well man. I’d almost throw all my eggs into his basket since he’s younger rather than continue hoping Mead makes the leap.

      • ouwooferman says:

        Him and Andrews….

      • KJ1123 says:

Exactly…which 6’5″ receiver are you gonna cover, oh wait there goes Dede streaking across underneath.

  • Defend Colfax says:

DJ Ward (+15) must be healthy, Samia (+31) please and thanks, Overton (+8) is a good sign as well as Jordan Evans (+2). Evans was someone who I didn’t think would reach consistent backer size but he seems to be holding on to that 230 just fine. Courtney Garnett (+22) is good to hear, also Rodriguez (+23) is awesome. Rodriguez is someone who really wants to be a Sooner and plays too hard to not see the field.
It’s nice to see our depth issues are turning around.

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

DJ gaining that size was a MUST since clearly the coaches like him. I personally don’t like him and think he’s hit his ceiling, but the extra weight doesn’t hurt.

      • blaster1371 says:

He has good instincts but too often couldn’t get off blocks. If what he added in weight translates into more strange then we could see a lot more impact from him on the field.

      • j l says:

All that missed time really hurt him.

  • Joe says:

When do the freshmen get added to the roster?

  • BigJoeBrown says:

With all the weight gain with the o-line and strengthening and conditioning with Schmitty and Bryd. This is a pretty good analogy of how I see OU’s line next year.

  • Birddawg says:

    I don’t see any negatives.
Everyone is focused on the season.

    • ouwooferman says:

      Queue SD…..Buehler, buehler? SD?

      • SamSooner says:

You don’t have to queue that tape: it runs in a endless loop.

I have to tell you, my days on here are better now that I have him blocked. I don’t see any of his idiotic comments.

If everyone blocked him, that a** would be talking to himself.

      • Stephen Dale says:

        I;m here…..

  • NBatt says:

Noticed Nick Basquine (sp?), the receiver that Baker said we really need to watch out for in the interview with Dean, isn’t on the list. Is he a walk-on?

  • Brandon Hargraves says:

Like Deberry down a few lbs.. hopefully that comes with some speed

  • Sooner Ray says:

Players and trainers getting it done.

  • Defend Colfax says:

I like the teams focus as a whole. The guys who needed to lose did and the guys who were too small have picked it up. That’s championship mentality. I really like the position coaches we have.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Love that gallimore and Orlando are losing the last bit of baby fat they have and replacing it with lean, solid muscle. Those boys have a bright future. Also like y’all said, super happy Samia gaining weight lol. Dakota Austin putting in work. That’s hard to gain that much muscle that late into the growing process. AD Miller putting on that size as well. He’s going to be a force next season. Baxter gaining 10 plus is big for us as well. Khalil will be a MAN for us next season and so will Chanse.

  • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Mayfield had to have replaced body fat with muscle too. I swear he looks way more lean in photos today than he did at the start of last season ( kinda had a gut ). We need him more lean and agile, IMO.

  • blaster1371 says:

Thanks Jordan for doing this comparison.

  • Gary Robbins says:

Thanks Jordan. Excellent everything today. I especially like your extra comments on some of the players. Lots of info is one of the reasons I sent my renewal subscription in early. This site is head and shoulders is above them all.

  • SWoods says:

I love it! Thanks for all the extra work today!

  • Mark_in_VA says:

I wonder if this is the first time Kyler Murray has really been challenged to build physically. He was so successful in HS, they probably didn’t rock the boat too much. And I s’pect A&M just ain’t Smittyville, especially for 5-star guys. That +10 looks to me like he’s committed to the process. Love it!

  • KJ1123 says:

    Meade at 200 = NICE!

  • KJ1123 says:

Julious dropping 30 lbs since Jan is crazy

  • Mark_in_VA says:

I *love* the way all the O-linemen–all of them–seem to be converging on that 300-325 sweet spot. Sure, Big O is still well above that, but he’s a total stud and ridiculously tall. But everyone undersized reached or is right there around 300, and all the really big eaters dropped that 4th and 5th trip to the buffet and put in some serious work!

    • KJ1123 says:

Seriously…and food during camp is first class too. Hopefully get a couple extra lbs by the season.

  • KJ1123 says:

One of the main ones that sticks out is Mixon not gaining or losing despite looking bigger. Hell be running some guys over.

    • turn2 says:

KJ, question after a comment. I have been OU message boarding since the great year of 2000. If before and after numbers are accurate, this is as positive an off season as I can remember:

Q- are these before and after numbers accurate? Not doubting Jordan’s report, question what is communicated by team.

Q- if before and after is accurate, is this considered , collectively, one of the best off seasons during Stoops Tenure? Or at least very positive?

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

      • KJ1123 says:

In my very honest opinion, yes the numbers are accurate, most of the players (if not all) weigh in everyday first thing in the morning. How long they’ve been at that weight and when the team decides to update those stats are unknown. For instance, I believe that if an update was done right after spring ball, you would see maybe half of these players at the weight listed above. But my theory is the team holds that info until now to show the overall dramatic change in the teams body comp, which makes for a more impressive showing. Is it best off-season? Definitely since TFB has been tracking this info afaik, im not sure how many other sites have been doing it as well though.

  • AltoidSooner says:

Mayfield down two pounds. Ive heard reports he has shakin’ off some baby weight and added some muscle.

  • Doobie74OU says:

Basically what I notice from this list is “Hard Work and Dedication!” Seems like every guy is heading the right direction and putting in the work to make themselves and their bodies better. Seems in the past there were way more numbers that seemed out of whack but this list overall looks great. I think we have a great group of Young Men assembled and we are adding more next year with #SoonerSquad17. Great time to be a Sooner Fan! Boomer!

  • DR LEO MARVIN says:

What sticks out to me is Joe Mixon same awesome.

  • soonerSD says:

The Oline guys trimming down where needed and bulking up where needed (Samia) tells me these guys are taking it serious that they are blocking for the best RB combo in the country and a heisman candidate at QB. Well done big fellas…. and actually, pretty well done all across the board from what I can see.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yes, and the best RB combo is about to become the best trio when the Rodney ‘the Beast’ Anderson gets some totes. This RB corps is amazing. Reminds me of the days of Barry’s ‘Bone, when anyone in the backfield could run around or over you.

    • Nate Broadus says:

Dru Samia’s gain was the brightest spot for me. Zeus Jr. gets a lot of press, but Samia was quietly right there with him. Incredible talent. Just needed some time in the weight room. Mission accomplished.

  • Farmer Glickstein says:

all lost weight is fat, all gains muscle, right? 😉

  • Stephen Dale says:

five names that were on scholarship were absent from the list above : Hatari Byrd, Jamal Danley, Wes Horky, Carson Meier, & Dwayne Orso-baccus……Are these guys still on the team ? I think Byrd may have left but hadn’t heard anything about the others…Please advise, Jordan…………thanks.

  • SavageSoonerEsq says:

What sticks out to me is that we now have no one in the 150’s or even the 160’s & several who were really lanky put on some serious weight. I’m stoked!

  • Clint Lenard says:

Lots of water loss and gains. Sounds like a few carb-loaded, a few may be dehydrated.

  • Will Narramore says:

    starting DL: Walker(304) Romar(300) Dimon(275)
    Backup DL: Gallimore (305) Overton(300) Ward(265)
Obo playing at about 20 pounds heavier than Striker and 4 inches taller
All in all I think this is a lot of really good athletic weight on the front line that should still get pressure but do a great job of controlling the line. Jordan and Tay Evans should reap the benefits of all the double teams these guys will command

    • Randy says:

I see Gallimore or Overton, Wade, and Austin Roberts as 2nd team as well. Lots of combinations they can go with.

  • Daryl says:

Ahmad Thomas up 15lbs scares me. He already looked slow and 15 extra pounds is it a small amount. Makes me nervous.

    The rest looked really solid.

    • OohRah Mama says:

      Could be muscle mass.

If it’s bad weight Schmitty still has the hottest weeks of the Oklahoma summer left to torture it off…

    • Clint Lenard says:

It’s most likely water weight and a few pounds of muscle. Going by weight increase/decrease is a bit silly since males can be (up to) +/-20 lbs on any given day, depending on their size and nutrition to begin with.

  • Chris White says:

Since you started with TFB and did these roster updates (which is still impressive because that’s time consuming) this is probably the best and most impressive one. Usually there’s changes in the wrong direction or no change. Guys I thought would never add weight (Jeff Mead) are adding a lot and our DB’s are getting bigger which is something I have always wanted. Big 12 offenses like to air it out so lighter DB’s can help but looking into the bowl season and playoffs we need more size for run support and just harder hitting. It’s hard for a receiver to run a crisp route when he’s getting his head knocked off

  • OohRah Mama says:

Personally, I still think they should take advantage of the Marines in the ROTC building next to the stadium and work out with them. Sometimes the CO’s are former Drill Instructors. That’d put some hair on their chests, don’tcha think? 😉

    • brainpimp says:

I love the marine DI’s but they got nothing on Schmitty.

    • DCinAZ says:

I don’t think Marine PT would necessarily help them with the training they need to be college football players but I see what you’re saying. I bet Schmitty would put most Marines “in the can” to be honest.

  • Shane Rivas says:

    Looking nice

  • nate g says:

Don’t put so much stock into these. It might just indicate where they are in their periodization training, with so many of the guys heavy. They may weigh them again next month and everyone is down. Look at gains over longer time, not month to month.

    • Walter Sobcek says:

Yeah, this is generally the heaviest these guys will be, after a spring and summer of weight training. They will drop some pounds once practice begins in August, combination of water, fat and a bit of muscle. But it sounds like most of them have gained good weight, epsecially the younger guys.

  • DCinAZ says:

That’s a LOOOOT of weight they put on Samia. Hopefully they’ve been pounding his upper body strength. With that good weight and improved upper body strength Samia will be a dominant OT.

  • Sooner Man says:

    Gabriel Campbell apparently isn’t transferring

  • DCinAZ says:

Late to the party here but great work Jordan.

  • cush creekmont says:

Thanks for the post! I have been seeing these on various sites for years. This set of gains (and a few good losses) is the most I can recall. LBs, DEs and OLs really hitting some fine weight numbers (making the reasonable assumption that the plus changes are muscle and the minus changes are fat).

OUr teams have generally been well-conditioned, but this group could be hitting new heights.

  • Nate Broadus says:

Looks like Dakota Austin is determined to prove he’s not too small for the job.
