Trey Sermon: As most of you know, 2017 RB Trey Sermon (Marietta, GA) visited Oklahoma this past spring and earlier this month released a Top 6, which included: Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, Oregon (where Sermon is visiting this week) & Oklahoma.

You may also recall Sermon has long maintained plans to announce his commitment in September. However, we have started to hear word a decision could be announced much sooner (no pun intended) than that.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this plays out because, as we previously noted, the Sooners stopped by to see Ohio State RB commit JK Dobbins last week and it sounds like the visit went well. So well in fact we get the sense there is some renewed interest Dobbins’ part.

We’re hoping to have more on this later, but as of right now you know what we know. – (Brandon & Super K)

Addison Gumbs: One of the first prospects the Sooners visited when spring evaluation period began last week was 2017 OLB Addison Gumbs (Hayward, CA). And Gumbs let TFB know the Sooners (Tim Kish) are already expected to return to California later today for a second visit. You may also recall Gumbs recently made a trip out to Norman for an unofficial visit.

Hence, we continue to like where OU stands with Gumbs. – (Super K)

Stephan Zabie: The Sooners will also visit 2017 OT/OG Stephan Zabie (Austin, TX), who visited OU during the spring practice period. – (Super K)

Barton Clement: Earlier this week the Sooners stop by to visit 2018 OT Barton Clement (Missouri City, TX). Oklahoma has been one of the first schools to recruit and offer Clement, who tells TFB he would like to get up to Norman at some point. – (Super K)

Lost a BIG oak in the front yard. At least 6 ft across at the base and 50ft tall. Kinda the Avatar tree for hummingbirds etc. so we’re really bummed. Like losing part of the family. Problem is I have know idea how to remove it

Anyway. Hope all is well. And BOOMER

What area do you live in?

      • RocketCitySooner says:

I’ve some experience with fallen trees. I owned 15 acres that was covered with oak and hickory. I had to clear a path for the power line and a place for the residence. This was way out of town. I owned a couple of chain saws and a tractor. I had burn piles that were as big as a tennis court.

That said, the best thing is probably to hire a tree service unless you have access to something that can lift large logs or if you can burn.

I did have one hickory blow down on an S-10.

        • Okie403 says:

It it will take a pro. I wonder if anyone would like the trunk If they had a mill to handle it they could make a few of those one piece table tops either long wise or round. They could have it for one of those tables!

Here’s pic. Dad just measured. Rootball is almost 15′ across.

          • RocketCitySooner says:

That’s a big tree. You will be surprised at just how big a pile it will make once you start taking it apart.

You need to call a pro unless you have some large equipment, several chain saws, and a lot of time. That pro might know someone who would want to mill the trunk. Any mills round your area? Transporting the trunk might be prohibitive.

I was lucky. I had in-laws with trucks, knucklebooms, etc. They sometimes worked as loggers so I could call on experts when I ran into more than I could handle.

That crimson & cream hype train is leaving the station……better get on quick Mr. Sermon!

  • Matt says:

these brainiacs sure have an eye for talent…Kary Vincent, who they’ve been really high on for a while, is now #25 in ESPN’s 2017 rankings.

  • SoonerGray says:

I think we take both Sermon and Dobbins if it comes down to it.

Hines and Gumbs would really round out the LB class for 2017.

It feels like we’re going to get to the season and almost be able to exclusively focus on linemen, which feels like a great spot to be in. I’m sure with the entire staff focused they’ll be able to bring in some elite talent in the trenches.

    • Super K says:

I don’t know how many RBs OU plans on taking but the problem is part of the selling point to Dobbins or Trey may be that they’re only taking one. If they play this thing right, I do think the Sooners could very well end up with Hines and Gumbs.

      • metzker says:

        Sweet!!!!

      • Lincoln Hawk says:

There goes my theory of AJ Davis being the perpetrator of the Baker tweet…if I keep shooting I think I will eventually score.

      • Matt says:

Trey and Dobbins are two different style backs though right? I understand you’re talking from the kids’ perspectives but to me it seems like they would compliment each other more than steal carries from each other. Also, it seems better to head to the NFL with less mileage…

        • Ura Hogg says:

Times have changed for sure in regard to RBs. The ‘less mileage’ card is a legitimate concern now for NFL teams as some have even used the number of carries against players like Derrick Henry who had so many carries last year.
In the past teams were looking at it more as an evidence of durability if a kid had a lot of carries. Now low mileage is an important consideration.
I believe if you put Perine in a run-oriented, feature RB offense like Bama had with Henry, he would get plenty of yards and be an even bigger star. But it wouldn’t be good for his longevity in the game.
Hate to mention a former Poke, but I have great respect for him, after reading about Thurman Thomas’ present health condition, I’m sure he would like to be able to go back and reduce some of his carries.

          • Defend Colfax says:

I don’t see Derrick Henry being successful in the NFL. I hate to say this, but to me he is a risk. I think with his body type and running style he’s a serious injury waiting to happen. I never want to see anyone hurt but I would not pick him before round 4.

          • Ura Hogg says:

I think a team might get 2-3 good years out of Henry unless he somehow lands on a team with a consistently good O-Line. He’s tough but not shifty enough.

          • Defend Colfax says:

Tough is one thing, but he’s just a big tall target with his stiff upright running, I don’t think he can absorb all those blows. Most other backs’ careers would have ended after a knee injury like Adrian Peterson’s. Henry has the girth I just don’t think he has the grit.

          • OUWade says:

I know what you’re saying, but I remember a LOT of people saying the same thing about Peterson’s running style. It’s just kind of hard to judge.

          • Defend Colfax says:

Henry’s legs scare me. He’s too top heavy, he won’t be able to hurdle the league.

          • Stephen Dale says:

Henry has the physical diminsions to morph into an HB / TE —IF– he can catch the ball well enough..

      • Scott says:

Ohio St has two RB commits and their recruiting Cam Akers as well , so I think Dobbins will be fine if OU takes another RB.

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

By using two running backs simultaneously both last year and this year will be a big selling point. Both backs can be told they will start if they are able to run, block, and pass catch….

Don’t want a back who wants to be the only featured back no matter what the situation is. Want people who want to win. They can go to MSU…or Wiskey…

    • Dick Bump says:

What Lincoln Riley is doing merging the running game into an high-octane passing offense has to be attractive to running backs. I don’t know how many we need?

    • Jeff says:

Both will not come to OU, especially with a juco RB already in the fold

      • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Juco back aside, there is always going to be competition on a high-caliber team like OU. However, by showing the world that you can win big with two running backs playing at the same time, you give yourself a selling point that all other teams don’t have.

  • Charlie Kersten says:

I think I nailed that one on the head with dissecting the meaning behind Jay’s tweet.

  • Soonerbred says:

So…reading between the lines there is one spot for Sermon/Dobbins. No mention of AJ Davis, so that must be the silent commit?

    • Lincoln Hawk says:

I tend to agree with that

    • Mark_in_VA says:

I think you have to take both if both come. That’s some serious talent to turn away.

      • Soonerbred says:

So you would take 3? I’m not sure the numbers would work. I don’t think the third would come knowing there were two others.

        • Mark_in_VA says:

They might have to play the shell game, but yeah, I think they would.

If you’re right, and the 3rd wouldn’t come, then I guess that resolves the dilemma.

        • Will Narramore says:

I think if it does come to fruition that all 3 want to choose OU you may see the JUCO RB Sutton nudged towards looking elsewhere if it comes down to a numbers game

        • j l says:

The JUCO kid is being taken as an athlete, not a RB. Davis and sermon would both be takes at RB.

      • Oscar says:

We need to sign a back that is a “showcase” type back for the future. A runner that can carry a team if needed. Which one of these young men has that potential?

        • Collin says:

Not sure but it will be fun to find out. Semaje was a guy coming out of high school that I wouldn’t have necessarily pegged as a RB to carry the program. Everyone was talking about Mixon. But sure enough, he took his opportunity and will be know as a Sooner legend for it.

  • Matt says:

man ESPN’s top 300 for 2017? Doesn’t include Robert Barnes OR CeeDee Lamb….that sounds crazy to me especially for Barnes considering all the talk out of the camps has been that he looks really good in camps. Lamb is surprising too because Super K is so high on him. OU is currently #3 according to ESPN.

Will Narramore you cheat don’t change the rule one name per category!!!!! Hell yea it’s hard and unfair ROFL. Remember one name

  • Jonathan Taylor says:

I’d love to see the Sooners add one particular formation to the offense for this year to help with short-yardage and to really utilize our stable of backs…the Diamond formation. How does anyone else feel about this?

    • Matt says:

I think they used it some last season with Perine, Mixon and Flowers

      • Jonathan Taylor says:

I don’t remember it being used as much as it maybe should’ve been. Just a add on I’d use Perine at the FB behind Baker, and Mixon/Brooks on either side.

    • ALar03 says:

      I would prefer the wishbone

      • Jonathan Taylor says:

Technically the Diamond is an updated formation for the wishbone in a shotgun style system.

        • ALar03 says:

I just cant stand the pistol. if you need a yard get the qb under center and run it up their a$$

    • Randy says:

Shotgun, Perine and Mixon play action to Mark Andrews will be there all year.. Basically a lot of options.. But yes a diamond formation would look cool with RB prospects on a visit.

    • Rick says:

We have had the diamond in and out of the offence over recent history. The player we seem to be missing for the diamond is a big, strong crushing FB.

  • ALar03 says:

So what’s the latest with kary Vincent?

I just want Trey Sermon & AJ Davis.

  • Fear The Magic says:

    Morning Brainiacs.
Anyone else hearing that CeeDee Lamb is now a soft verbal?

    • kokevo says:

I have considered him that for awhile now. I really hope he stays I love his film.

    • SooperDave says:

Where did you see this? He was just posting OU stuff on twitter 2 days ago.

      • Fear The Magic says:

I was reading it on another board. Nothing official that I can see.

        • ccmosaic says:

Many call him a soft verbal because he has said all along he would take his visits. It seems in todays age we call those soft verbals. I honestly think he sticks and will end up being a gamer. LSU is currently after a couple bigger names and though he has an offer from then my understanding is it is not a committable offer.
If they get the kids they have on their board above him he, will be out for LSU. In the end I think the kid will see OU wants him and no matter what he will choose to be a Sooner.

    • hOUligan says:

Hoping he stays but OU has options, too. Hoping to keep Reagor and Rambo more. Still holding out for a James Robinson – A J Davis package.

  • Lincoln Hawk says:

    D. Warren “crystal balled” K’Jakre Daley, LB out of West Palm Beach, FL today, just thought I would pass that along. Looks like we offered back in Feb.

  • Matt says:

I’m curious, do most TFBers see the Sooners as legit national contenders next year? Lehman just said on air that he doesn’t, says he has too many question marks. For me, I don’t see that many. I think the offense will be better, D-line will be better and the secondary will be better. The only glaring question I have, which is a big one, is linebacker.

    • Rick says:

For me the only hole I saw from the spring was the secondary. DB’s were pretty iffy in my book. I think the LB’s will be solid, maybe the best they have been back to the Calmus or Lehman years. Most of this type of offense revolves around the QB. I don’t see a problem with the starter, or the backup for that matter, he really impressed me ( I realize, he knew he wasn’t going to get hit), but the DB’s didn’t shut down his receivers.

      • Matt says:

I wasn’t able to see the Spring Game but it sounded like the secondary issues came when the backups were in. I’m just curious, what gives you so much confidence in the backers?

        • Rick says:

Quality and some experience stacked really deep. We have the guys we already know about. The guys who played in the spring looked REALLY good, and we have a couple of JUCO’s and a particular 5* coming from Cali that are pretty good as well. There was some issue with tackling during the spring game, but I attributed most of that to, “Oh we can’t tackle this guy or OK we can tackle that guy”. To me, the fact that the LB’s spent a lot of time in the backfield, and in position was telling.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

I agree. I don’t believe linebacker is our biggest concern. I think Tay will step up along with Jordan on the inside and I think between Obo, Jackson, kelly and Deberry we will be fine on the outside. My biggest concern is the offensive line. We have the big uglies to get it done it’s just a matter of them hitting the season on all cylinders. I think our defensive line next season needs to be Walker and Gallimore and the ends with big Q at DT. Sure we would be young, but those guys are nasty and to me, they just need game time experience. Having that kind of beef on the line will only make it easier on our inexperienced backers to come down and make plays. I think PJ needs to step up and take that CB spot opposite JT. We have arguably the best safety combo in the nation between SP and AT. If I had to give a prediction to our season I would say 10-2 with 1 OOC loss along with a conference loss along the way.

          • Rick says:

I was happy with the way the line grew up over the year. the OT’s were both young and seemed to improve a little from game to game. Samia will probably move inside and one of the other guys work at RT, but I think they will be really really solid. Like I said in the earlier post the DB’s were my concern, they were beat early and often. The safeties looked good.

          • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

They certainly grew up as the year went on which is why we are all so excited for next season. They need to be ready to go right out of the gates next year tho and that’s what worries me. Not so much against Houston but more so against Ohio state. I may be the minority on this one, but I think by seasons end, receiver will be one of our best units on the field. This offense has the chance to be deadlier than that well oiled machine Bradford was operating.

          • Rick says:

The obvious question, (IMHO) is the complexity of a front loaded schedule and the difficulties that really tough games present early in the season, when freshmen are still 18 year old freshmen. How much talent does it take to produce a championship type effort with so young talent. I really like OUr chances. September will set the tone for the rest of the season. People will look at OU in October and either say, “not so tough” or “do we really have to try to beat that team, they’re awesome”.

      • metzker says:

Maybe our receivers are just good.

    • Boom says:

Normally don’t jump in these conversations cause I will get pounced on but here goes. No, our team is not ready. First, we have talent but do we truly have leadership at all position groups? Do we have the team chemistry & confidence and only time will tell. Are the right pieces of the puzzle in place? DL, yes there are some talented guys but experienced? Do we have anyone on DL who is dominate? No. Our big hope (Walker) hasn’t hardly played due to injuries or can’t break the lineup. All others are good but great? Same with LB or the whole defense for that matter.
Offense we have the backs but a young line with a new C who is calling the blocking shots. Will he consistently get it right? Can Baker get the ball off on time or step up in the pocket? Will he try to make a huge play on every passing down? Gutsy is one characteristic but so is stubborn. Can Bake even throw in the middle of the field or will they all be out routes. Will our WRs make the right reads based on the defense and play called? Can we run a fast offense or will that take time due to the youth. These are a lot of questions I have.

      • Rick says:

Some really good points. I am encouraged with the DL talent depth. Q looked great, and Gallimore OMG!!!! He flashed some awesomeness from time to time, obviously not consistant, but he’s got “IT”. I agree with your leadership points. I was watching the Neal hype vid early this morning, and one thing I noticed about the vid was the number of highlight catches he made over the middle. I hadn’t remembered that. Bake’s size would obviously make him move for visibility (or so I would assume) making outside passes more the norm, but the thought did occur to me these passes to Neal came over the middle from somewhere. I also agree about the youth concerns, especially at WR. The word from the spring was that Lewis was already making his presence felt as not only the “SR” reciever in a leadership role, but also in a physical sense, dude is strong. I really don’t see an OL problem. Alvarez is in his natural position at center, they all performed quite well. I was always a fan of Nila and Ty, but I think their replacements are probably already better than either of them were.

    • CS says:

Have to go with Teddy on this one. We do play in the Big12, so we will be there at the end, since we have a good shot at winning the league, but then again we do play in the Big12, and we could be left out of the big dance. But, realistically, we have more than a 80% shot of winning the Big12, since TCU, BU are losing quite a lot of talent as well.

The game against Buckeyes will be an eye-opener, we could make a statement that could build our chemistry for the league stage.

      • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Agree. Baylor is replacing a lot on defense and they weren’t good at all on that side of the ball last year anyways. TCU will have a solid defense but their QB is still a question mark. With these soft ass defenses in the Big12 we really need to pound that rock against everyone. Control the clock and let our defense have a chance to rest and stay off the field. Our defense as a whole can still get torched so if we can just have that game control against the better teams in the Big12 I think we should be fine. Ohio states talent is quite obvious and while they are young there’s no denying they have the size and speed to give any team fits.

      • SooperDave says:

How the secondary plays against Houston will be interesting.

        • CS says:

How the entire defense plays against Houston will be interesting, that is a dual-threat QB, and I know not just Mike but that is any Dcoord’s nightmare. We might need our O to pull that game through.

          • SooperDave says:

Seems like I remember hearing something about Houston, OSU, and Clemson’s coaches getting together this spring too.

        • Rick says:

I read an article about Houston recently that stated they should bring some O fire power, but their biggest concern is the same concern I have for us which is the DB’s. Apparently, they don’t have any experience and not much depth. We might really light them up!.

    • Dick Bump says:

I think we’re further along than last year. I’m excited, but I also realize it’s a tough schedule right off the bat.

    • Birddawg says:

      Trenches…
Nattys are won with the best Dline/Oline.
Our Dline is really good. But Walker needs to step up into the Elite.
Oline needs to be more consistent in pass pro.. We gave up a lot of sacks. Daimler step up to RT and kick in Samia at G.. That’s a promising oline.
08 Dline/Oline. McCoy was a monster in the middle.. spilting doubles.
Oline.. 5 returning starters that ranked 4th in the country all came back from 2007.
That’s to me the only two things that separates ’08 from ’16

    • Dana Rogers says:

      Leaders.

Last year we had teammates that would sell themselves out for their brothers on the field. We had players unafraid to challenge the team to get the best from each other on every play. But Striker, Darlington, and Sanchez are gone.

As I see it talent isn’t in question and regardless talent in and of itself isn’t going to win the Natty. Of course we might be a bit thin here or would like more experience there but to me that doesn’t really answer your question. I’ve yet to read an article identifying anyone who has stepped forward filling the leadership void on this years’ team.

Leaders – Show me a few of them and I’ll show yOU a legit national contender.

    • Zack says:

I think they’re contenders but I also think they’re going in with a huge target on their back so I wouldn’t pick them to make the playoff or win the big 12 if I were betting money.
Last year I was very confident they would go over the wins which I think was 8.5 or 9.5 and I was confident they would win the big 12. I don’t feel the same this year. They have to develop chemistry between baker and the wide outs. On defense they just have to prove they can get better with another year under cooks for the dbs and with guys at linebacker that have been in the program for some time now and are better athletes overall than the guys we lost.
Also I think Walker needs to play like no one’s talking about him.

      • Sooner Ray says:

I can see things from your viewpoint, no problem, but I think this group is looking hard for a way to come together as a unit and the coaching is going to be strong. As a side note, I always look at the upcoming season with unfounded optimism. 🙂

    • Zack says:

They have to develop chemistry between baker and the wide outs. On defense they just have to prove they can get better with another year under cooks for the dbs and with guys at linebacker that have been in the program for some time now and are better athletes overall than the guys we lost.
Also I think Walker needs to play like no one’s talking about him.

    • Stephen says:

Questionable WR’s and replacing almost all the LB’s. I’m not going to write them off but it will be much harder to make it to the Playoffs this season as opposed to last season. Historically a highly ranked OU team doesn’t come out with the urgency they need to consistently win games. Mayfield, however, may change that mentality.

  • SoonerfanTU says:

Who does OU like more, Sermon or Dobbins?

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

Personally I like Sermon more. I am more for a powerful running back vs a scat back type anyday.

I would have checked in more today but one of my barns lost a fight with the wind last night, been getting things ready to dry it in tomorrow.

      • Rick says:

All your family and animal’s ok? (we hope)

        • Sooner Ray says:

Oh yeah, I just noticed a lot more daylight in the barn when I turned out horses this morning. lol.

          • Rick says:

Im in North Carolina tonight just west of Raleigh/Durham, it appears what hit in at home last night is going to make it’s way here tonight.

          • Sooner Ray says:

Hopefully the front line winds won’t be as strong and of course, pray for no tornado’s.

          • Rick says:

They’re predicting rain and hail, for here. My neighbors back home say we have a few limbs down (Lake Texoma), but no real damage. Glad to hear you’re safe.

          • Sooner Ray says:

I’m much better than some, saw a lot of damage on the evening news in Tulsa and some areas up near Kansas.

          • Rick says:

I grew up in the Oklahoma panhandle, saw lots of tornados and damage as a kid. Back then, it was cool to go down into the storm cellar for the evening. I’ll never forget the smell of the cellar.

          • Sooner Ray says:

            Can you say “musty”? 🙂

          • Rick says:

Perceptions as a kid, are quite different as an adult. I mean…as a kid I used to like to eat at Poncho’s…..YUCK!!!!

          • Sooner Ray says:

I had that mexican buffet in Tulsa once. It was delicious until I got home. lol.

  • CrimsonNative says:

Brock looks strong but he’s going to need quite a few more lb’s to play DE.

  • Phurter says:

Does anyone know what happened to Bryce Youngquist? Are we still keeping a ship for him?

    • Zack says:

I don’t know that the details are going to be released any time soon. Bob will keep a scholarship open if there’s a chance he makes it to campus. Even if he never plays football again the school would honor that offer.

  • Sooner Ray says:

Happy that Brock is taking a visit. I grew up playing football with his dad and know most of the family. Good wrestler and comes from a family of athletes.

    • Lane Gilstrap says:

So do are they OU fans or OSU fans or do you know?

      • Sooner Ray says:

His uncle is BIG okie lite, my crimson clashes with his orange every time we are together, I can’t remember whether or not his dad really cares one way or the other. I will be checking into it if the visit goes well.

Who is the better grab, Sermon or Dobbins?

    • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Both: Another pair playing at the same time like Perine/Mixon.

    • Rick says:

Sounds like a ministerial tag team duo!

    • Sooner Ray says:

Hard for me to say. I would love either or both but sometimes the transition from high school to D-1 doesn’t pan out for everyone. Bottom line, I want the one(s) that have their heart set on Sooner land.

  • rphokc says:

nhl…….big win for isles in game 1 with bolts who didn’t show up for the first 2 periods…..bad loss

    • Sooner Ray says:

Had the game on the tube but wasn’t watching every minute, managed to see a couple goals.

      • rphokc says:

3rd period aside, the okc weather radar last evening was more interesting……but, it’ll get cookin’ I hope

        • Finney56 says:

Without a doubt, that’s going to be a good series. Tavares is a superstar who is simply willing that team to wins. While the Bolts are a very solid young team. Great series to watch!

          P.S. Go Stars and Penguins!!

          • rphokc says:

blues are bad matchup for the stars……..stars have trouble with teams with size and skating……still no seguin which is a loss……..stars can do it if d and gt holds up but that’s been a problem…..will know something after the first 2 games………echo you, go stars, pens

          • Finney56 says:

Without a doubt. I was hoping that the Blackhawks would win the series with the Blues because they’re a much better matchup for the Stars. No Seguin definitely hurts, but the rookies have played well, especially Faksa. Need some good games from Niemi and Lehtonen and I think the stars surprise a few people

          • rphokc says:

yeah, I hope we enjoy this series………..have fun

I’m glad my Pens got out of their early season funk in time for the playoffs. Capitals are going to be a tough series, though.

      • rphokc says:
