I’ve been lurking yes, but it’s because I’m so freaking busy right now. Just finished taxes, now I have to get my quarterly taxes done (unemployment and fuel) and I had two friends pass away on Friday. I’ll be back more regular next week!

Let me just add to everyone, if you do not feel good for several days in a row, GET TO THE DOCTOR! My friend that passed away, the 48 year old, had not been feeling good for almost a year and finally said something. They got him to the doctor and by then it was to late to do anything for him. His kidneys stopped working and he passed away in the hospital before he could get his young daughters out of school and up there to see him.

Special teams is in good hands? Outside of Seibert, we have no special teams. Ross had one decent return all year.
Who returned ( I mean fair caught) punts in the spring game? I can live with Ross; the punt return (fair catch) game drives me nuts!
I think Westbrook was our PR in the Spring game.
Westbrook, Baxter, Mixon and Humphrey all “returned” punts in the spring game.
Truth. It was good seeing several people tried out.
I want to see Humphrey or Baxter out there returning them. I’m really fine with whoever, I just think those two have a better chance of being allowed to return them than others.
I don’t want what happened last year to happen again. What good is putting someone very valuable to your offense (Shep), who is excellent with the ball in his hands, out to return punts if he just sits there? Either suck up the chance that he gets hurt and let him return them (not my preference, but still better than 95% fair catches) or be too scared to play him and let someone else actually return them (my preference).
Bottom line – there are punts in football games. Return them. Please.
Might be a combo of reliable hands being on a player too valuable to allow to run in the event of injury.
Lack of depth at skill positions showed greatly. It was worrisome that only two guys on a roster of 80-something players could return a punt or kick.
Ross drives me crazy, he falls to ground with the slightest contact.
Could he be one of Gundy’s biggest misses in RB recruiting?
Tough to beat Jermie Calhoun, Justin Johnson and Brandon Williams.
The ONLY phase of ST where OU did well was ‘punt return defense’ where OU was #1. Seibert was 49th in punting and 44th in FG %. OU not even top 50 in any other ST category. Not near good enough for a team with national championship aspirations.
I agree that our Punt Return strategy was terrible. I hope that will improve this year.
As for Seibert yes he was 49th in punting because he doesn’t punt for distance he punts for height and that is why we were #1 in punt coverage. I think we also have to remember he was a true freshman which should mean he takes a pretty big step forward this year especially in FGs I thought his punt was very solid last year. So I would say special teams is doing fine.
Stoops has commented on Seibert’s high punts and how that keeps them from being returnable. Just to put numbers to it. We had eleven punts returned for a total of TWELVE yards.
That is impressive, to say the least. Heck having only eleven punts RETURNABLE is impressive as heck as well!
We had 57 punts but they only returned eleven. This is compared to our opponents that punted 91 times and we returned 22 for 165 yards.
Less then 20% returnable and we are there on top of them in every case it appears. So distance is important but hang time is perhaps even more essential to stopping returns! You don’t get much better then what we did last year. It would be great if we were dangerous on returns on our own side as well, of course!
Yeah, when we talk ST we need to realize that our kicking side is very good. It’s mainly the punt returning that is bad. KO returns were average.
Hang time is definitely important in return coverage. There is a term “out kicked his coverage.” Kick it too far and there is more room for the guy to make his cuts and get loose.
Good point! And the distance was negligible.. 6 yds. He will get stronger as he matures. So…yes..punting and punt return D is very good. The rest of OUr ST … not so much.
That’s why I’m baffled at that article. How can anyone feel good about ST play? Needs overhauled badly.
every year around this boring time in sports, I start over the football season and rewatch all the games.. I’m only 3 games in and being scared of injury might be a reason for the lack of returns. But early in the year about 70 percent of our returns had either a penalty or a fumble on a return, those things happening you are losing field position.. And then if you go back to the Tennessee game their punter was incredible when we had any sort of chance to flip field position, but still we were pinned inside our 20 the whole game.. Bob made a Bob decision to not shoot ourselves in the foot anymore and played it safe the rest of the year in my opinio, hell we just stopped even blocking for a return

Congrats to OU softball. Patty Gasso is legit. I was thinking this was going to be a rough year by OU softball standards because they are such a young squad. But they just keep playing better and better and improving with each game.
