OU Football Spring Scrimmage Notes 4.2.16

Image via OU Football Facebook

Starting to gather a few notes from OU’s second scrimmage of the spring that took place earlier this morning and wanted to pass along what we’ve got so far. Decent chance we get some more and when/if that happens, we’ll update this post below.

* Was told the offense won today, but overall was pretty fairly matched for the most part. The defense had their share of success, but the general sense was that the offense probably had the better overall day as a whole.

* AD Miller really stood out during the scrimmage, and also shined in the team’s most recent practice as well. Miller had a big catch and run during the scrimmage and at least two long catches in the aforementioned practice. Was told he also had a touchdown grab today on which PI was called on the DB in coverage, but Miller still managed to bring it in for the TD.

* Jarvin Baxter and John Humphrey were fielding punt returns today. Not sure how permanent that is or if it’s just something they’re working on at the moment.

* Also heard Baxter continues to improve and had a good day today. Nothing huge necessarily, but just good consistency.

* Was told Jordan Smallwood had a good scrimmage, including a diving catch in the end zone for a TD.

* Was told Will Sunderland and Steven Parker both had INTs in a recent practice. As for today’s scrimmage, both Antoine Stephens and PJ Mbanasor hauled in INTs.

* Starting cornerbacks today were Dakota Austin and PJ Mbanasor. Was told Jordan Thomas is still not practicing.

* We continue to hear that the light is coming on for Mbanasor. Really starting to put things together according to those we’ve spoken with.

* Joe Mixon had a huge 70-yard run. Was told, “he just outran everyone.” Daniel Brooks had some pretty solid runs as well based on what we were told. And not surprisingly, Samaje Perine was held out of the scrimmage simply to get the other RBs some work.

* Starting defensive line today was Austin Roberts, Jordan Wade, and Matt Dimon. Roberts was in for Charles Walker, who tweeted out earlier Saturday that he was recovering from surgery (check the weekend OP for the latest on that).

Was told Roberts looked good, had at least one sack. Also heard Neville Gallimore continues to impress as he works his way back into things.

* Curtis Bolton is running with the second team, but did have a sack towards the end of today’s scrimmage.

* Dwayne Orso-Bacchus was taking some 2nd team reps at RT today.

Again, will try to bring you more later…

    Thanks for the info.

    Good stuff right here, thanks.

Have a feeling we’ll be playing without Jordan Thomas this year.

    Bless you Jordan

  • Rick says:

Kinda suprized Mixon was playing in the scrimmage, not suprized he hauled off a long one!

    Timely. Good read. Thanks.

  • kt-raida says:

the thing in noticing is the past few years, one side would totally dominate the other which was cause for concerns that would show up as weaknesses during the season. Last year and this year so far we’vebeen getting balanced reports!

  • ⚡️Electric Sooner⚡️ says:

So I think it’s safe to say the weight that Mixon has put on is good weight!

    • Vegas_Sooner21 says:

Without a doubt. I had and have no problem with him adding muscle to what is already a big body. The kid is special and I want him to have an even greater impact this season than last.

    • oumike23 says:

The kid is legit! On the 70 or so yard run during scrimmage…they were blowing the whistle any time he was grabbed. Nobody laid a hand on him which is also credit to oline. Dakota was coming from across field and had angle on him to be tackled around the 10 yard line….but Mixon outran the angle

  • Sacramento Sooner says:

thought I was gonna have to wait till Monday! TFB…you make me happy! Thanks for all the hard work guys!

Would really appreciate it if these BS crap posts could be kept off these boards as it is not the place for them. We really don’t give a damn what you do for a living and don’t want to hear about your scams. Try getting a real JOB and let the rest of us read about the sports we log on here to read about without having to scroll around your bullshit…….

        • Drew says:

Well said, but whoever posts these things is likely a bot, or a person who flat out doesn’t care. Regardless, your reply won’t get read. And if you ban them (Jordan’s tried it several times now), they just make a new account and keep posting. Better to just ignore them and move on.

          • RDC212 says:

There has to be a way of keeping this crap off here. I know we do t have this problem in other boards.

          • Drew says:

Well, Jordan’s banned them multiple times w/ Disqus, but I don’t think they have the ability to ban by IP address. Other boards use different systems that have different mod tools, so that’s probably why you don’t see it elsewhere.

  • rphokc says:

on south ez……..are they adding an overhang over some seating…..seems strange if that’s the only purpose

    • Dick Bump says:

I think that was in the plan on both sides of the scoreboard. It would be nice to be in the shade in September.

      • Dick Bump says:

I looked at it again. There’s a covered area all across the South Endzone. It’ll be a popular place when it’s 100 degrees or raining.

        • rphokc says:

if so, just find it odd for an overhang for a few ……..afterall, that does cost money………just curious, no biggie

      • hOUligan says:

Think it is looking good. Love the ‘bowled in’ look and once the big video board is in place …. it gone be crazy loud in there.

  • Dave Wilkins says:

Was Bolton at MLB on the 2nd team?

  • Big Higg says:

God I love this site I’d be lost without it!!

  • Defend Colfax says:

    Jarvis Baxter’s mom was offended.

  • Will Narramore says:

Is it time to start worrying about Jordan Thomas being held out of everything? Is this academic related? Him being ineligible would be disasterous for next season

    • hOUligan says:

Not ‘worried’ per se. W/ Thomas’ continued ‘troubles’ now is the time to have someone ready to go at CB other than him. Not sure Thomas can be counted upon, unfortunately.

    • oumike23 says:

He was there yesterday. He wasn’t in jersey/pads but went thru most position drills yesterday before the scrimmage.

  • Boomer4life says:

The final 4 game can’t get here fast enough!

  • Lane Gilstrap says:

This is the best basketball season I have ever seen. It’s been the most exciting by far. Wether it ends tonight or Monday night with a win or a loss it’s gonna be bittersweet. So proud of our boys.

    • Bob Edwards says:

This is my third Oklahoma Final Four. I loved Billy Ball and worked in the athletic dorms until Dec ’86 so I was much more familiar with the ’88 team. That one and this one are close in my mind. Of course, if we win it all this one will shoot to the top.

      • rphokc says:

for those who missed billy ball is kinda like missing the switzer times……..they just don’t know

        • Bob Edwards says:

It was fun to watch. I still remember the time Billy told Waymon he could play point guard if we got up by fifty. Sure enough we did, and there came Waymon bringing the ball down court and shooting jumpers.

        • Lane Gilstrap says:

          Well I was 5 in ’88

      • RBear says:

KREF had a good back and forth going on via Twitter pitting this team vs the ’88 team- I guess it got pretty funny once Stacey King chimed in. You can prob find it here if you dig far enough:

        https://twitter.com/Stacey21King?ref_src=twsrc^google|twcamp^serp|twgr^author

      • Sooner Ray says:

I think Billy will always be my favorite. Lon is proving to be a legend, but Billy was as entertaining as Switzer. Gotta love those guys.

        • Stephen Dale says:

In this era of ‘political correctness’ , Billy would have stayed in trouble all the time……..

      • cush creekmont says:

I still HATE Danny Manning and that KU team. They were not great all year long and got the best breaks in their bracket. The real top teams were AU and OU. When they played in the semi-finals it took a lot out of OU. If KU had played AU in the semi’s, they would have been killed. It was a perfect storm against OU. That final game was a one-off for KU. If it was a series, OU wins every single time.

        • 22dupree says:

Cush … I upvoted your post. If I could, I’d like it 1,000 times. So true and takes the thoughts right out of my soul and puts them in print. They were clearly the inferior team and had absolutely zero business winning that game. To this day, Manning is my all-time least favorite athlete.

      • Rick says:

The big similarity for me Bob, was the awesome fun to watch both teams when they were playing well, for me the matchups on the Billy ball teams were UNLV/Tark the Shark, and Loyola/Marymount, obviously the 2 wins against KU/Manning before getting beat in the final.

      • Stephen Dale says:

this team does not have a Stacey King …..that’s the biggest difference to me…

  • hOUligan says:

Yes!! Real football news!! Thank you TFB!! Love hearing Miller is beginning to stand out at WR. Someone needs to make a move there. Next? And apparently the added weight has not slowed Mixon.

  • Jofield says:

Awesome notes!! Great job! But can you fix the type on Jarvis Baxter’s name since players occasionally read these? Great job though!

  • cush creekmont says:

Thanks! We appreciate all the info we can get with all the practices closed. If any of you TFB staff wish to add more tomorrow, we readers will gladly take it! 🙂 🙂 🙂

  • Rick says:

I don’t know if all of you know about Baxter’s roots, probably most of you do, but from homeless to D1 WR is an amazing story. http://www.tulsaworld.com/sportsextra/ousportsextra/the-journey-of-jarvis-baxter-people-will-want-to-help/article_79c433c9-7f6a-5a40-a8b6-7fc2ae30fc22.html

  • D Hunter Sanchez says:

Don’t like the fact that light-weighted Dimon is unable get beat out. Was hoping to get more stout at that position.

    • LandThieve3 says:

Worries me too. I already feel like he’s a technically sound player, but just doesn’t have the size. We need War Daddies

      • bigrackhunter says:

Lampkin and Galimore are waiting in the wings. Both are photo typical size DEs in the 3-4.

    • bigrackhunter says:

He’s just filling in for the injured Charles Walker.

      • MikeyBoom says:

        * Starting defensive line today was Austin Roberts, Jordan Wade, and Matt Dimon. Roberts was in for Charles Walker, who tweeted out earlier Saturday that he was recovering from surgery …..No Dimon is starting.

        • bigrackhunter says:

Are you suggestion Dimon would be the starter even is Walker was healthy?

          • Kelsta says:

The write-up (above) says that Roberts (not Dimon) is filling in for Walker. So with a healthy Walker, it would be Walker, Wade and Dimon.

          • MikeyBoom says:

lol thank you for clearing it up. Its pretty self explanatory if you ask me

          • MikeyBoom says:

Read what was written. It CLEARLY answers your question

        • bigrackhunter says:

Are you suggestion Dimon would be the starter even is Walker was healthy?
