With spring football starting on Saturday, we figured now was as good a time as any to preview where things stand with this Oklahoma football program. Coming off a disappointing loss in last year’s CFB playoff and returning 14 total starters, there will be no shortage of expectations for this 2016 squad. The plan is to preview things by position group, both as to where things stand in the spring and project how things might play out later this fall. So let’s get started.
The Sooners offensive line will be a young unit in 2016, this much we know. Orlando Brown and Dru Samia both return at tackle after starting thirteen and nine games respectively last year. However the interior of OU’s offensive line, which struggled times in 2015 keeping guys out of gaps, is pretty much up for grabs with the expected move of Jonathan Alvarez from guard to center. The hope being that between Alvarez and two new starters at guard, OU is able to upgrade in terms of lateral quickness and overall athleticism.
It goes without saying there will be opportunities for guys to fight for spots throughout the spring and likely into the fall as well. But going into the spring, we are told the lineup is as follows:
LT: Orlando Brown, with Bobby Evans working behind him.
LG: Cody Ford. We haven’t heard who is in the rotation behind him but it could likely be Ashton Julious.
C: Jonathan Alvarez, with walk-on Erick Wren behind him followed by freshman Logan Roberson.
RG: Jamal Danley, followed by January enrollee JUCO OL, Ben Powers.
RT: Dru Samia, followed by Christian Daimler and Dwayne Orso.
– I should note that Samia has been taking some reps at left guard, however we’ve been told this has only been within the 3-deep and may simply be a situation where they are ensuring ample depth at the position. Similar to the way they gave Nila Kasitati some reps at tackle last year, but he never actually played there in a game.

Brown and Samia on the same side would be like the Berlin wall.
Hell yes. And Art Briles will be on the sidelines going all Reagan on us, yelling, “Tear down this wall!” But it won’t be coming down.
I think are guard at is going to be much better than last year. Offence has a chance to be absolutely awesome!!
Good stuff. Thanks Super K! Can this OLine be better?? I guess we shall see!
Gut feeling but I think this line will be a big improvement, I’m optimistic like that. 🙂
gonna need to gel quick, nasty sched right out the door
The OL’s size athletic ability tells me they will push Houston around. tOSU is a different story so hopefully they will be more in sync by then.
then tcu, ut
I hope. But FSU couldn’t push Houston around.
They didn’t push anyone around and had no threat throwing the ball. Run blitzed them all game and can’t do that to OU.
I’m optimistic about Evans and hope he takes the next step. Curious, if Evans really impresses enough to earn a starting position, where do you think he could start?
I was wondering the same thing or one of Ford or the two JUCO’s from this years class taking the LT and moving Brown to RT, and then shift Shumia to OG (seems like a more natural fit for him IMO)
Left side more athletic then OB, move OB 2 right side and DRU starts at left guard
I’m high on this upcoming OL. I believe it will be much more physical with a nice touch of bridled nastiness. I do agree they will need to gel early but Coach B is the man and I believe this team will be on a mission this season. No better way to start the season than punching Houston right in the face. Physical, fast and aggressive is what I’m expecting in 16. Start that countdown already suckas!
I’m liking your attitude.
I think we are at least ahead of where we were at last year. Last year 2 starters…this year 3 starters and 1 on the shelf with an injury.
Agree, always easier to replace G’s than T’s IMO.
Yep.
Wow, I am so impressed. However, I do believe this is a crock. Michelle, I wouldn’t have responded to your post if you weren’t such a hottie. Would you take me for a ride in your new McLaren F1?
How come you didn’t buy one of the suites in the new OU South Endzone instead of a stupid F1?

Agree.
When Ty Darlington tweets how much better the line will be this year w/o him and Nila, you tend to believe it. The line will be manned by stronger, more physical types. Like Ikard and Habern, Ty relied on his intelligence and experience and was a good, if not physically overpowering lineman and a great leader. Leadership on the line will be a key, too. As young as he is, IMO Orlando is going to have to set the tone. And that would be a good thing considering his rumored work ethic and his nasty streak.
I’m hoping big OB will take charge, I just don’t know that much about his personality.
Definitely saw his nasty steak at times last year. Glad to see him keep it under control better at the end of the season. He is not going to back down from a challenge.

I don’t think Ty was physically overpowering at all. He got pushed around a lot.
You might have missed the ‘.’ (period) between ‘physical types’ and ‘Like Ikard’. Agree. Point was, Ty was not physical and the line will potentially be more ‘overpowering’ w/o Ty and Nila.
Center scares me
Okay, we won’t play you at the nose guard position then.
Good one. He’s a goof, that one.
King’s sister or what?
Yeah. I little incest: queen.
Cant get any worse than giving up 39 sacks last year
Part of that was on Baker for not getting rid of the ball.
Maybe, but For every not that is on Baker, there’s a play that he saved a sack by scrambling around.
If he threw them away there wouldn’t be as many sacks, but there wouldn’t be as many big plays either. Either way he is certainly the cause of a few of those. The pocket never broke down at times and he would still be scrambling.
At QB, there are times to be a play maker and times to be smart. If the play is not there, Baker should & could have dumped it off but he held it. If he learns to be smart, he will put the team in a better position to win especially the big games.
I think it would be more accurate to say that the line last year gave up 59 sacks but Mayfield was athletic enough to get out of 20 of them. An upgrade to the interior of the line would help a lot. Hope the guys and Coach B can solidify that area!
Really hoping Cody Ford is good enough to start. Watching his HS film he just looked like a nasty devisdating blocker.
no mention of erik swenson – our 4-star recruit courtesy of jim harbaugh?
Not on campus yet and most likely will redshirt.
Seriously hope ET is OK it’s weird not seeing him on here… Thanks for the write up K!
As taboo as it is to say. Things Happen, and I’m just praying for him. but …
What are the prevailing thoughts about Orso at OTackle?
Some time ago there were some positive anticipations about him at DT.
Little worried about next season, but ultra excited about 2017/18. Tons of young, talented kids that will be monsters with some experience.
I was excited about Danley when he signed. Hope he lives up to the hype
I’ve been pulling for Christian Daimler and he looks to get on the field this year and show out!
Thanks K for putting these together. Appreciate all the insight.
Good to know your take on O line issues and depth, Super K. Appreciate you and Jordan writing up these spring preview breakdowns for the positions. They help me a whole lot.
We should be a better unit overall, Most notably stronger at the point of attack against quality dl. JY has pointed out time and time again how important it is to be stout up the middle thus being the tip of the spear. Really like the JC guys at the guard spots, and at the very least provide quality dept.
Joseph Paul So. how is he looking and how about Jamal Danley as Sam Grant may play some tackle still as well as TE, as Dwayne Orso plays a chance to be in the role of a tackle
