The 2016 class, for the most part, is done and dusted. And the OU staff have now shifted their recruiting focus to 2017. But before we do the same, I want to take a quick look back at a few of the ups and downs from the 2016 and what can be learned from each going forward.
– Abdul Adams and Joshua Jacobs: There probably isn’t a position I dislike scouting more than running back. But even I can see Abdul Adams (OU signee) and Joshua Jacobs (Alabama signee) are fun to watch. At the level those guys play, you’re splitting hairs trying to pick between them.
The Sooners did a nice job of continuing their excellent RB recruiting and because of it, the blow of missing out on Jacobs is certainly mitigated.
The Lesson for 2017: While they certainly weren’t alone, OU was clearly very late in discovering Jacobs. The lesson to learn for 2017 is to make sure the state of Oklahoma is thoroughly mined, and the in-state players are fully evaluated. That means finding them now, staying in touch, and ensuring they feel wanted or desired enough to at least come camp at OU where the coaches can get an up close look at them.
– Chris Daniels: Diron Reynolds, Bob Stoops and the OU staff did a great job of recruiting Chris Daniels. Just because they ultimately lost out to Texas does not change that fact. In fact, for the longest time Daniels’ father was squarely in OU’s corner because of the relationship he had built with the OU staff and the tremendous respect he has for coach Reynolds. In fact Daniels’ father said about Reynolds, “hands down, my favorite defensive line coach.” But somehow Texas still managed to steal Daniels late.
For TX kids that’s not always surprising, but Daniels’ family is originally from Arkansas and grew up rooting for the Razorbacks. However as we discussed on TFB many times, Daniels’ family had a lot of personal ties to Charlie Strong and that certainly played a considerable role in Daniels’ recruitment. Not to mention Strong is known as a good recruiter regardless.
That said, I can’t help but feel like a lot of what swayed Daniels in the end was the official visit to Austin where he was around a former teammate and current Texas starter, Patrick Vahe, and all the other local kids Texas had in that same weekend.
The Lesson for 2017: Build a foundation. Typically recruiting kids in a certain area (Texas or Oklahoma for example) ensures they know each other, and a lot of the time they can be your best ally in recruiting one another. The see each other at camps, games, etc. and end up building a strong foundation with each other that is sometimes harder for them to walk away from, perhaps even proving to be more important than the relationship they have with a school and/or coach. Additionally, they can band together and collectively recruit other guys.
That doesn’t mean OU should back off recruiting nationally — as far as I’m concerned they got a STEAL out of D.C. in Parnell Motley — but they need to continue to work to make sure there is a foundation of committed recruits who help the coaches recruit other kids. In this 2017 class, OU already has a couple guys like that in Levi Draper and Robert Barnes.
The Lesson for 2017: Get out of your own way. Whatever the reason for Cobb’s decommittment, the Sooners can’t shoot themselves in the foot. Honestly, that wasn’t even the only story we’ve heard about of an OU staff member choosing a less desirable course of action. The reason maintaining good relationships throughout the process is critical for OU is because not only can it affect the current recruit, it can affect relationships in the region for future recruits. Going off and a player that’s tied to a certain group of coaches, trainers, players, etc. can come back to haunt you down the road.
– New Coaches: For whatever reason, new coaches tend to struggle a bit in their first year of recruiting. Jerry Montgomery was one of the best recruiters Stoops has ever hired, and even he struggled that first year.
The Lesson for 2017: There’s really no lesson for OU here, but there is a lesson for the fans…be patient. OU had several new coaches recruiting in this past cycle, and I fully expect them to recruit at a higher level in 2017.

Bob Stoops said he never offered Jacobs a scholarship at RB. He only offered Jacobs a scholarship at Slot, when V Jones decommitted and OU parted ways. Bob said Jacobs is a nice talent, but OU was limited to one Slot scholarship and felt they had their best prospect in play until he wasn’t in play. That’s when OU approached Jacobs with that opening.
Bob prefers bigger RBs with ball skills like Mixon.
Adams and Jacobs are about the same size. Jacobs is already a lean 200 lbs. IF anyone recruits bigger backs it’s Alabama.
I’m only passing on Bob Stoops’ words not mine.
So, you disagree with Bob Stoops.
You wouldn’t be the first fan to do that. Ha!
Abdul Adams is far more polished as a receiver, excellent hands, size and speed. Great get for LR’s system.
When things started to heat up with Jacobs and Stoops went to visit him I checked out his hudl and was more than impressed. I really wanted OU to get him. Right after I watched it I decided to re-watch Adams hudl and I thought. If anything he looks even better than Jacobs. Bama did well getting JJ. I believe we did better getting AA.
who in the heck would seriously go off on a recruit like that? I’m also curious what these other “less than desirable” stories are about our staff handling kids.
Boulware
smh….terrible.
Was that who it really was? Do you know details Stephen?
Thats been the rumor for a little while and I’ve heard back before the season started the RB’s haven’t loved having him as the new RB coach. I don’t think he relates to college guys as much as other coaches are able to.
Id like to see Gundy go back to being the RB coach and have Stoops replace Boulaware with a really good young WR coach who can also recruit. Ive never been impressed with what Boulaware has brought to the table.
Good write up. Thanks SuperK
All good point, Super K. I’m hoping our coaches don’t wait too long to show interest in Tre Brown from Tulsa Union.
#fireboulware congrats kish you are finally off the $h*t list.
TFB is focused on the wrong angle of OU’s recruiting 2017.
Losing Joshua Jacobs isn’t a big deal.
Why?
He didn’t want to play Slot, OU didn’t want him at RB.
Losing Daniels isn’t a big deal.
Why?
His family was too close to Strong to even make this joke up. Ask Mike Stoops.
Losing Cobbs isn’t a big deal.
Why?
He bolted when OU brought in Mayden, so OU took a chance that didn’t pan out.
Le’ts focus on:
Kyler Murray
Geno Lewis
Caleb Kelly
Amani Bledsoe
Abdul Adams
Mykel Jones
Zach Farrar
Jordan Parker
Chanse Sylvie
Johncarlo Valentin
Mark Jackson
Austin Kendall
Parnell Motley
Erik Swenson
JM Terry
Kapri Doucet
Emmanuel Beal
Ben Powers
Ashton Julious
Adrian Hardy
Logan Roberson
Bryce Youngquist (fingers crossed)
Any other suggestions as to how we could do a better job?
Free lunch.
Free college
I swear I had some Chipotle gift cards laying around here somewhere….
The gift that keeps on giving…the next day.
I wouldn’t be opposed to this at all.
Keep doing what you’re doing. I LOVE TFB because I know you guys give it to us straight (and for free, no less!). Here’s to an even better 2017 recruiting class!
Pump that sunshine Jordan.
I hear you can pay other people to do that 🙂
You have to PAY them to do that? Save yourself some money and the rest of us some misery! LOL
@disqus_cItxT0Z8XC:disqus vaguely obscene, gentlemen. I’ll allow it.
LOL! You would read it that way. (of course I did too)
This site is free you could charge ha joking
I suspect you’ve never spoken to the families of any of the recruits you referenced. I’ve spoke at length to all of them. And Mike Stoops didn’t recruit Daniels (Bob Stoops, Reynolds and Ah You did).
Well, apparently you should just “do better”. LOL
Mike is his DC. Mike basically said a recruit played OU for stature purposes, and it happens. He didn’t name names. Read into what you like. I’ll do the same.
I love how this class came together with limited scholarships. The staff had to be very careful with grade risks in the end.
Why are you on this site posting contrarily to those who do the actual leg-work? These guys put their LIVES into this site, you have the pleasure of being here to debate issues. I don’t think you should be questioning how they do their work, especially contradicting their findings as they spend time on the phone with recruits, coaches and the families of recruits. What info do you have? A 247 membership? ESPN Insider?
Hey man! I have an ESPN Insider account and you wouldn’t be able to comprehend the things I have learned about OU football from it
/s
Because Bob Stoops would say the same.
“Would”? Bob, is that you? Get outta here with that
Now that’s not fair. TFB is a place where the common posters can disagree with the TFB’s. What is the issue? TFB have an opinion perhaps based on what they believe is the truth. What Playlike is saying rings true. His takes sound like what the coaches are thinking. Sure they would’ve taken Daniels and Cobb, but it worked out perhaps better that we didn’t get them. This is not a failed recruiting cycle. Opinions are allowed here no?
How can you complain over something thats free and very knowledgeable?
Mike Stoops said he had 1 scholarship for DE – Amani Bledsoe and 1 scholarship for a NT. OU didn’t sign that NT. Mike said he didn’t want to sign a NT just to sign one with such limited ship.
OU quit recruiting Marcel Southall, when Mark Jackson decided to visit. Mike said Mark Jackson gives him the best flexibility of any recruit to play with his hand in the dirt or stand. Jackson will be a Jack LB with Spinner/OLB ability. He was giddy about flipping Mark Jackson, but so would Alabama, LSU and UT.
So, let’s not paint the sky is falling or coaches couldn’t build relationships when only 1 NT was missed on.
Sign one extra NT in 2017, then OU is back on track. No drama required here Sooner fans.
Is this a reply to Jordan’s question? If so, you need to click “Reply” below his comment for everyone to better keep track.
He can say what he wants, OU wasn’t recruiting an NT in this class. They wanted a B gap player and Daniels was supposed to be that guy.
K, I find the defensive schemes still a bit hard to understand. Last year was a 3-4 with Striker playing a position tailored to his skills. Now I hear we are going to a 3-4 with more classic OLBs. But sometimes playing a 4-3. Could you do an explanation sometime of how the DL lines up in the different schemes and how the desired body types changes with the different formations?
Pardon my ignorance ….
Not K,
But I’ll pass on Mike Stoops’ take on it. Mike Stoops said he will finally be able to implement a traditional 3-4 with the flexibility of a 4-3. He did point out that the defense was built around Striker.
Mike said putting a 218lbs DE/Spinner/OLB whatever you want to call Striker over a TE was perhaps not the best idea. He spent too much time scheming Striker because of voids at talent on the roster. His words not mine. Mike went on to point out Striker is now a Will LB at the Senior Bowl, which was his best fit.
Moving forward with this class and talents like Bledsoe and Jackson, OU can implement the traditional 3-4. He didn’t mention Caleb Kelly by name, but he alluded the OLB will see more size and speed.
You’ll have to tell that to Mike Stoops as he said one DE and one NT.
He went onto say this class gives him the best add to finally implement a traditional 3-4 with the flexibility of a 4-3.
Um, K just said Daniels wasn’t an NT, but a B gap player so you kind of made his point.
Mike may have said NT because the average fan doesn’t get the difference.
Completely understood his B gap comment. NTs are 1 technique with A gap assignment between the Center and the Guard. That’s not Daniels imho in a 3-4, so that leaves you with one scholarship for a DE in the 3-4. Amani Bledsoe is that guy, not Daniels. If OU schemed a traditional 4-3, Daniels would be a fine DT.
That’s why I didn’t lose sleep over Daniel’s departure. I was extremely pleased with Amani Bledsoe’s commitment shortly thereafter. That was HUGE. Then a stout Spinner/OLB like Mark Jackson was icing on the cake. Big and fast is a luxury in the 3-4.
I think you are expressing the coaches sentiment exactly. Good job. OU did not fail this recruiting cycle. Daniels will get knocked on his ass in the RRR in 2017.
Thanks for the breakdown, PLC! Having read you assessment I feel even better about a class I was already stoked on.
Thanks.
Mike, you should stop speaking of yourself in the third person, its weird. Also You should be busy working on a game plan for Houston and Ohio State instead of harassing TFB
The demeanor of certain coaches interviews on NSD leads me to believe they are concerned about the success they did not have.,
Eye of the beholder perhaps?
Bob Stoops made it very clear, nobody is giving him credit for 5 Star Kyler Murray or 4 Star Geno Lewis.
OU has a 3 Star walkon Kicker, nobody cares about either that won’t add to the ranking either. Other teams signed 3 Star Kicker recruits that counted, but OU doesn’t have the scholarship.
No. It’s in the eye of the bee holder.
Well, if THAT gets in your eye…you’ve had a bad day.
Probably felt like they were lied to by a couple guys; my guess would be Cobbs and Jones.
Cobb bolted because of Mayden. I have no hard feelings because OU wanted Mayden more and gave it their best shot. It didn’t happen.
I understand why Cobb bolted too. He surely wasn’t pleased about Mayden.
Not sure what your feelings about the Cobbs/Mayden thing have to do with the aforementioned OU coaches.
I get it, kids do weird sh*t. I would guess that said OU coaches felt like they HAD one or two guys and felt like there was some monkey business involved in their decommitting.
I get it, but there’s always going to be monkey business in recruiting.
I truly don’t fault Cobb for bolting, when Mayden stepped on campus. He had to be thinking why is that necessary with three in the fold now. Mayden is a legacy, so someone could have got into his ear and said legacies are treated better. Who knows?
I’m not worried about the second one, because one doesn’t make a class.
Selfishly, I wanted Mayden.
Just out of curiosity do you know for a fact that Mayden is the reason that Cobb bolted or is that speculation on your part? Ive heard others mention this as well and unless those saying this personally know Cobb or have heard him say it then Im not buying into that.
Just speculation. I actually think the Cobb rumors started a bit before the Maden rumors, so I don’t put much stock in that. Reminds me of the OL that used the frat issue a few years ago to decommit. Was just good timing for leaving.
Thats exactly what I think as well. I remember thinking that Cobb was a goner even before the Mayden interest picked up any steam.
Me too.
I thought Cobb is not going to like this at all.
It appears he didn’t like something in the end. Ha!
I’m over it.
Jean Delance to Texas over the frat issue.
Cobb left because of a certain coach.
I won’t say who the coach was, but on a different subject, I wish our special teams were better.
Got it. Yelling at players for taking visits shows desperation. The new coaches have to remember this OU. I don’t like the concept of taking visits while “committed” either, but why show emotion? This is OU. We don’t need a recruit who doesn’t want to be here. NEXT!
I don’t think it shows desperation, I think it shows frustration, and rightfully so. That coach put in a considerable amount of time and money into Cobb. Is it the reaction he should have? Certainly not. But he’s human. He was upset. He will learn and be a better recruiter for it.
I think they were pissed about getting played and led on and rightfully so.
Open Post is up
Losing Jacobs won’t hurt us. There has been some talk in the Tulsa area that a handful of schools, including Tulsa University, watched him play in person and didn’t offer. OU and Bama never watched him live that I’m aware of, maybe highlight video’s don’t tell the whole story.
Agreed. No way Tulsa or OSU didn’t know about this kid, and neither offered. I think some schools offered late, some others piggy-backed, and the kid probably got offers he didn’t deserve, in terms of his talent. I’m guessing we won’t hear much out of him at Bama.
I hope he does well, but I also think it’s odd that OSU nor Tulsa offered. I think he benefited from some last minute scholarship openings at some of the schools.
I maintain that while his film looked great, his competition was terrible. Without a showing at camps against other top tier talent, I really don’t think we can definitively say we lost out, or “missed” Jacobs.
I believe this class is much more than two attrition cases (Daniels and Cobb) and one in your backyard case (Jacobs).
That discredits Bob Stoops and his staff ability to sign BIGTIME talent across the nation.
If Jacob accepts a scholarship, Top 100 prospect Mykel Jones isn’t signed.
Bob Stoops would laugh about fans wringing their hands over two decommits, knowing the 21 sign top flight talents with such limited ships.
I wonder if:
a&m is wringing their hands over 4 Star Mark Jackson flip
Miss State wringing their hands over 4 Star Zach Farrar flip
UCLA wringing their hands over 4 Star Jordan Parker flip.
What about a&m’s 5 star QB transferring to OU?
Not good enough for the Sooner fans?
It’s good enough for me.
I think last week Sam Mayes was talking to Bob Pryzablo and they mentioned on the radio how helpful the star rating system is and overall, yes it’s important that you get guy’s that are physically talented and the odds of having good season rises with better talent according to statistics/stars.
Sam also brought up a good point about Jacobs. He might be a great player, but how can he go from being unrated prospect, hasn’t played a game in a couple of months, not gone to any camps recently and then bumped ahead of a bunch of players to be a 4 star. Meanwhile these other players have been followed all season and were ranked in a certain order during and a month after the season.
It would seem that there’s some truth in the ‘who’s recruiting you’ as a factor. Once some P5 schools started coming around, BAM, 3*. Get tOsu and Bama involved, BAM, you’ve got your 4th ****.

Yep. Clarity on this.

Well said.
I’m fine with the class overall. I think most of the concern is the fact that we’re finishing in the 20s in overall recruiting. I get it, stars don’t matter, yada yada yada. I agree, to an extent, of course. Sometimes, though, talent is pretty obvious, too. And considering that OU consistently signed top 10 classes and competed for classes that would come out as the top recruiting class in the past – to finish around 20th in a year that was widely considered to be a very good year is a little disappointing, particularly with the struggles Texas has had. Of course, Super K has a GREAT point about 1st year coaches, too.
I’m not saying all that’s the case with me. I just imagine it’s a sore point for a lot of OU fans. I tend to fall on the side of getting guys that you can develop into whatever you’re doing and then laughing about how Texas missed out on X guy because they were too busy looking at “stars”. And I think we did that pretty well this year. I’m always going to want more superstars on the DL and OL, but that’s just me. I’d probably complain a little even if we got 4 Tommie Harrises and 5 Jammal Browns. 🙂
But I’m not unhappy about this class. I AM a little concerned about some coach “going off” on recruits, though. Kids are fragile these days. You can’t be running them off by being a hard ass.
Stoops mentioned Jacobs recruitment (or lack there of) in one of the videos on Soonersports. He basically said that we didn’t have a real need at the running back position (after landing Adams) and that when they offered him late they did so considering him in more of a slot/wr position. He also said they were aware that once they offered that there would be a snowball affect with other major programs to snag him last minute. Also, that those other programs may have had more of a need at the actually running back position than we did.
I obviously paraphrased most of this… but this is my interpretation of the interview.
You are 100% accurate, but that story won’t be told. Bob also stated their previous commit now decommit at Slot was a better prospect at the Slot position. Some don’t seem to care about the truth, just the drama.
Having followed recruiting very, very closely since way before the internet, the best advice for anyone that’s new to recruiting or more of a casual follower; (and to echo what was said above) BE PATIENT.
I’ve seen far too many comments (no so much here, but on other sites) throwing around words like “disappointing” or “terrible” when it comes to the 2016 class. One big thing I’ve learned, after decades of being a ‘recruitnik’ is to never judge a class until you actually see them perform. Otherwise, you’re passing judgment on something that hasn’t even happened. And that rarely works out, and never makes sense.
Regardless of the stars or rankings, I always look to see if a) we filled our needs, and b) did we improve the talent anywhere. In both instances, we did.
Agree 100%
well said, super keith
I guess I’ll be one to “disagree”. The math will tell us that whether you believe in the star system or not, having top rated classes gives you a much better opportunity at the title (as it did for us in the early 2000); as it does for tOSU, Bama, Clemson, etc.
Did we fill or needs: NO … there should never EVER be a year where we don’t recruit DL. Yes we had a great DL class last year but to build consistent depth, every class needs DL.
Overall we have a good class, but without another Baker Mayfield miracle find, we’ll just be a good team down the road but far from great.
