Sooners have just picked up a commitment from JUCO linebacker, Emmanuel Beal out of Lackawanna CC. This is the second linebacker commit in this class out of Lackawanna CC, the other being Kapri Doucet.

Happy for this young man but after Velus Jones I’m not getting comfortable with commitments until NSD. I know sometimes it’s an OU thing but yeah. Still good pickup!
Sent this to you guys on Twitter but just curious if we would consider going after Andrew Ford the QB from Lackawanna. With the Cody Thomas news, we could certainly use a backup with some college experience. Any thoughts? I took a look and coincidentally he’s the highest rated JUCO QB still unsigned. With all of our other guys from there, it could be a perfect match.
I think they’re just going to count on Thomas coming back in the fall.
I’m confused. I thought he left the team. So that’s not true? He’s still with the team. Still on a football scholarship but just taking the spring to play baseball?
He left the team but the news was that he might come back after the spring. He took a chance on football full time, it hasn’t paid off now it looks like he wants to give baseball a chance full time to see if he can progress. From what I saw of his stats in baseball, they weren’t very good.

I think so. But we will see how this all plays out. They gotta be careful trying to load up on linebackers.

Well we trusted folks on several two and three stars- many of whom won us games and played in the NFL. So yes, we will have to trust the staff on this one- like EVERY one.

OK, so we have 3 OLBs committed and are holding a spot for Kelly. Does that mean Blue is out? I gotta believe that we were only going to take one of Beal/Blue.
I said earlier that I don’t think blue was going to flip. I guess they weren’t concerned about taking beal as I thought they would make him wait to try to commit.

I agree 100% in taking Jackson, but we don’t have many scholarship offers left. We need to be careful loading up LBs when there are other needs. I mean 5-6 LBs in one class is a lot
Our base defence is the 3-4.. We should bring in a 4-5 lbs every year, especially when your replacing 3 of em.

No I get that, its just were getting really low on our available spots. Wish we were replacing them with 4 year players instead of JUCO, but at least they have some experience and can make an early impact.

Hopefully Stoops had some in-depth evaluation on Beal cause his CC stats are mediocre at the very best. Too late now I guess … Boom

you can find them on the school website …. a remember seeing limited tackles and around 5ish TFL (and thats in two years if I remember correctly).
9.5 TFL for beal. 17.5 for doucet this last year.
Stats actually were pretty solid. 31 tackles this yr with 4 sacks:

I hope that you are aware that just because someone has more “stars” doesn’t mean that they are better player.
Stars are not the end all be all, but a 2 star JUCO with a basically a blank offer sheet dosent have the makings of a diamond in the rough IMO.
Plus JUCO’s already have some college development to them, making their rankings typically more accurate than kids out of high school. Not in every case, but usually.
just as long as you put “IMO.” I think the coaches don’t care one bit about stars, only fans do. Once practices start, nobody will think about stars, just producing
Im certainly no talent expert, but this has been a common theme the last few cycles.
We offer a kid we probably otherwise wouldnt, because of a transfer, dismissal, early departure to the NFL, miss out on a higher target towards NSD, etc.
I highly doubt the coaches offered this kid expecting him to be an impact player, more along the lines of depth. Depth is always important though.
If he ends up playing meaningful snaps, it will probably be a pleasant surprise.
Boom! Love the size and athleticism of this kid, combine that with a potential for immediate impact.

Howdie, Metzker. I was glad to see the walls didn’t collapse whe Jones went back to SC. But there is a fundamental breakdown somewhere when your commitment can’t last 24 hours. It appears these kids have somehow been able to one-up gaming the system. It’s a total embarrassment to themselves and their families.
I so agree Sam I as a parent would be ashamed., but thats the old school in me I guess.
No it isn’t. It’s their life. Where is your concern when the ADULT coach who recruited them leaves after one year with a gazillion dollars? (the same one who probably lied his ass off to get the kid there)
Kids are stuck after they commit. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity and there are LOTS of things going on in their mind. Breaking your heart isn’t one of them- it aint personal.

Jackson would play our jackbacker spot, and provide quality depth behind obo and Deberry. It’s a different position, more a tweener or rush end position. It’s definitely a need for sure with the loss of Bond and Striker.

Any film on Beal out there that can be posted here? Seems like OU has more offers that will likely turn into commits and still making more offers than scholarship space actually available.
I found Beal’s film on hudl. When I watch film on outside linebackers there are three things I look for: back side pursuit, holding the point of attack and coverag skills. Granted all we see are highlight plays but with that said Beal looks pretty good. He has a few moves when rushing from the edge other than just speed rush around the edge; he dips, has a swim move and a little head fake that gets the OT leaning the wrong way and then Beal jests past him. Keeps blockers off him with good arm extension. Tackled well, hits the ball carrier with some violence and has meat hooks for hands.
